beautiful.
My two-and-a-half-year-old daughter has recently started saying the word ‘beautiful.’ Except she pronounces it, ‘boo-full,’ as you can probably imagine how a toddler talks. It is the cutest thing and brings a smile to my face every time she says it, but what really gets me is the objects that she calls beautiful. She has brought me dried out dandelions that have gone to seed, random rocks in the yard, and tree sticks that have fallen to the ground. Things that seem so ordinary and plain, and yet she says, “This ‘boo-full’ Mama!” It is such a great reminder to slow down and enjoy the simple things right in front of us. There is beauty all around, we just need to take the time and look!

EARLY YEARS
Sullivan Supply evolved from John and Dede Sullivan’s drive and determination to make a living in an aspect of the cattle industry. The truth is - the Sullivans wanted to es tablish a purebred or seedstock cat tle operation, but they didn’t have enough money to buy cattle or land. Therefore, they started to explore other avenues of the industry. John spent four years manag ing show and sale cattle for large ranches; Rosanky Cattle Compa ny in Texas and Little Mondeaux Ranch in Nevada. A “show barn junkie” since his teenage years, John possessed a wealth of knowl edge about show products. “I was a herdsman for show cattle operations for a number of years, so I naturally loved that part of it. And that really led me into the show supply busi ness,” John explained. The Sullivans saw untapped opportunities in the show supply industry. “We thought that the in dustry had not changed a lot in 10 years to be honest. It really hadn’t progressed with innovation or im provement,” John said. They want ed to develop fresh, innovative products for livestock show enthu siasts; products specific to the show animal.In1989, equipped with a dream and determination, John and Dede, both 23 years old, moved home to Dunlap, Iowa to start Sullivan Sup ply. The Sullivans began building their business out of John’s parents’ garage. To say their beginnings above This is a model of the very first Sullivan Supply trailer. The very first trailer was purchased for $6,900 and was pulled to shows with a borrowed truck. In 2021 & 2022 Sullivan Supply refurbished 4 steel trailers back to their original look and they head to shows across the country.

were meager would be an under statement. Using cardboard box es for desks and a borrowed, old farm truck to transport product, the young couple worked to create their business.
FIRST PRODUCTS Due to his years of experience in the livestock industry, John already had a good idea of new products he wanted to offer customers. “I had been involved in showing cattle since I was knee high and always loved it so much,” John shared. “So, it was kind of natural to know where I wanted to start and what I wanted to do as far as products.”
The initial products evolved through much trial and error. John and Scott worked closely with a chemist to perfect the composition of each product. By 1990, Sullivan Supply had its first products ready to roll - Tail Adhesive, Prime Time Adhesive, and Kleen Sheen. More than 30 years later, the original three products remain favorites at cattle shows across the country. The chemistry in some of Sulli van Supply’s first products hasn’t changed, while ingredients in oth ers have been fine-tuned. “Some of the products have stayed the same because you don’t want to touch that formula. But products like Kleen Sheen, we refined it over the years, ® below The new warehouse in Dunlap, Iowa, opened in March 2018.
One of John’s best friends from high school, Scott Kinzer, worked with John on the development of Sullivan Supply’s first products. At the time, many of the show products available were catch-all. The young entrepreneurs envisioned product lines tailored for specific species to address an animal’s unique hide, skin, composition, and needs. The ideas came easily, but the execution proved a bit trickier.

TOUGH TIMES Though at the top now, the com pany’s climb to success has been riddled with tough times, shoestring budgets, and financial strain. The rapid growth and popularity of Sul livan Supply’s products let the Sul livans know they were on the right track.Yet, every year the company grew, the Sullivans needed to expand in ventory. “Maybe the worst part of it was we just never had enough capital. We just didn’t,” John said. “We were growing year two, three, four, and five and we were traveling around to all the shows. We knew it was going pretty good and we made a little bit of money. But then our inventory went up and that ate up every ounce of profit.”
as cattle have gotten more hair, we have lightened it up and more hair growing aids have been infused,”
John explained. Today, John collaborates with Sullivan Supply Product Manag er, Scott Kinzer; Sullivan Supply Director of New Product Develop ment, James Sullivan; and Sullivan Supply General Manager, Matt Burkhart during monthly meetings to assess strategy and new product ideas. “The meet ings are energiz ing and fun and a wealth of knowl edge spills out,” John stated.

It took Sullivan Supply close to a decade before it could comfortably balance its exponential growth and inventory costs. The company’s other biggest obstacle to overcome was the development of a product line. The creation of a full product line required lots of time and mon ey, both of which the company was in short supply. The Sullivan team worked for 20 years to create and distribute a full product line.
The manufacturing side of the business just received an upgrade. The company recently completed the construction of a 90,000 square foot manufacturing plant, located below The showroom located in Dunlap, Iowa is open 6 days per week.
AMERICAN MADE From the beginning, the Sullivans made it a priority to manufacture a majority of their own products themselves and to ensure they were made in America. Controlling the manufacturing gives the company more flexibility to make improve ments, catch imperfections, and deliver quality products. “If a Sul livan comb is coming off the press and something is not right with it, we are responsible for that. So, we don’t take a shortcut - we don’t try to put an inferior product out there. We are the manufacturer and the retailer, so it needs to wind up per fect,” John explained. Stockpiled fescue can be fed when endophyte levels are lower in January and February. Graze stock piled Bermuda grass early in win ter, Picking says.
Low supplies of hay make feeding cattle a challenge.
lizabeth Picking, a University of Missouri Extension livestock specialist in southwestern Missouri, sees the effects of severe drought in her area – dwindling hay supplies, poor-quality hay, high prices and ponds going dry. Under these conditions, cattle producers need to be more efficient with feed, Picking says. This in volves testing forages and calculat ing the cost of energy and protein to get the best value and results. Most county extension centers have hay sampling probes that pro ducers can borrow for taking hay samples to test quality or nitrate content. Send samples to a labora tory certified by the National Hay Testing Association. Some offic es have moisture and temperature probes for avoiding fires caused by hay that is too wet. Consider weaning older calves when short on feed, supplement ing feed during critical periods and culling nonproducers, Picking says. Reviewing forage quality and dry matter intake during growth and reproductive stage helps producers determine needs. Also, an under standing of protein and energy for spring and fall calving helps. Cows need energy-producing supplement when hay supplies are low. Picking suggests a review of crude protein and total digestible nutrientProducerspercentages.canstretch hay sup plies by substituting 1 pound of grain to replace 2-3 pounds of hay, she says. Cattle need at least 0.5% of their body weight in dry matter of forage per day. Cattle will initial ly appear gaunt and hungry but will adapt within two to three weeks. One alternative is tubs of supple mental protein and minerals. They vary widely in price, contents and daily consumption. These come in a cooked and block forms. The moisture-dense blocks are usually cheaper than cooked tubs, but they may be more expensive per unit of nutrient. Blocks are easier to handle than cooked tubs, weighing 30-35 pounds rather than 100-500 pounds. They are best suited to small herds, Picking says. Use salt to limit feed intake. Cat tle can eat about 0.1 pound of salt per 100 pounds of body weight per day. Mix with commodity feed to limit intake if using a free choice feeder. Cattle can overeat, so take care to limit supplies. Salt increases water needs, and this can be a prob lem when ponds run dry.
Another option is adding liquid feed on low-quality hay. This im proves palatability, reduces dust iness and gives cows extra protein and energy. Limit urea to no more than half of the daily protein source.

By Hilary Rossow photos courtesy Blondies Butcher Shop indsey Loken grew up in Good hue, Minn., the daughter of a veter inary technician and an entrepre neurial welder. Her mother had a reputation for healing lost causes, and many calves were left at their home when their owners were tired of trying to save them. Lindsey quickly became skilled at bringing these calves back with a concoction of her mother’s creation including raw eggs and whiskey fed via EG tube. One such calf earned her a class-winning purple ribbon at the county fair and a lifelong love of raising cattle. Days after graduating high school, Lindsey set out to work with world-class horse trainers including Pat Parelli’s program in southern Colorado to learn his natural horse manship techniques. One morning, Lindsey’s horse was saddled in the arena when the call of nature crept better next time. When she round ed a corner, she slipped on some loose pea rock, and fell comically between the boots of Bill Galt. Bill was visiting from his ranch in Mon tana, and after scooping Lindsey off the ground, he decided to watch her ride (after she returned to the arena, of course!). Bill offered Lindsey a job at the Galt Ranch that day. COWGIRL SKILLS Lindsey found herself on horse back covering nearly 100,000 acres and caring for over 4,000 head of Angus cattle as well as cow-bred Quarter Horses. The Galt Ranch was recently featured on a Discov ery Plus series, “Last American Cowboy,” and it shows that, while dramatized, the hit series, “Yellow Mountains of central Montana. As a skilled horsewoman, she re turned to Minnesota to help a suc cessful Halter Quarter Horse outfit campaign their horses at regional and national shows. The horses she worked with earned two national championships as well as many top 10Thehonors.show world’s darker side weighed heavily on her, so she de cided to enroll in a paramedic class in Wyoming and spent nearly eight years as a first responder in the Big Horn Mountains. After encoun tering even more darkness in the form of her patients’ widespread drug abuse and suicide attempts, her father told her the butcher shop in town was for sale during a phone call.

making course at the University of Wisconsin at River Falls, she met Harvey Pfannenstein from St. Joseph Meats who invited her to his shop in St. Cloud, Minn., to apprentice for a week. She was put on the saw and taught to cut steaks for high-end steak houses like Hell’s Kitchen and Manny’s. She was nervous, but her teachers were forgiving, and she never made the same mistake twice. During her courses, Lindsey took meticulous notes with drawings and specific in structions. “I still refer to it and add to it,” Lindsey said. Blondies Butcher Shop was known as “Wanamingo Meats” since 1934, but the new ownership had many locals rechristening the shop, “Blondies.” “My nickname, whether I liked it or not, has always been ‘Blondie.’ The local retired farmers would drop a beef and go to coffee and say they dropped a beef at ‘Blondies.’ From there it spiraled. Customers started writing checks out to ‘Blondies’… it wasn’t going to stop so we renamed the shop,” Lindsey laughed. When she bought the locker on the north end of Main Street, she was welcomed as a business owner. The local customers were forgiving of her early mistakes, and Lindsey ensured mistakes were only made once and created each as an oppor tunity to learn and adjust. The air circulation system was replaced early in her ownership and purple lights were added, both dramatical ly helping the aging process. Lindsey’s practiced hands trimming a subprimal cut.

AG HELPING AG Like most industries, the recent pandemic had profound impact on Blondies Butcher Shop. As a com passionate person, Lindsey did not hesitate when asked for help. Many producers were forced to hold hogs that were ready to go to slaugh ter. One of her longtime friends called shortly after his load of fin ished hogs was turned around en route to the packing plant. A rash of COVID-19 positive tests had put processing on hold at the plant, and there was no capacity for his load.
Early alignments with Dr. Ryan Cox from the University of Min nesota, Minnesota Beef, and long time friends from the community ensured her business hit the ground running the right way. “Royalee Rhoads (of Minnesota Beef) has been instrumental in connecting me to resources and helping me pro mote the beef and pork industries,” Lindsey explained. Lindsey has also enrolled in the beefSD program, which consists of six intense educa tional seminars over two years de signed to help beef producers take their enterprises to the next level.
One of the most striking compo nents of Blondies Butcher Shop is the copious use of hot pink in sig nage, packaging, and marketing.

Blondies Butcher Shop has hosted several tours for FFA chapters, 4-H clubs, and Ag classes. The students observe skinning, eviscerating, pri mal cutting, sausage making, and retail cutting as well as the retail process. The attendees generally find the tours interesting and infor mative, and Lindsey believes the inside glimpse of the work involved in producing food is important for young people. In addition to her support of many nonprofits and youth programs, Lindsey has joined the speaking circuit. She speaks to industry groups about promoting protein, direct marketing, and many meat science related topics. “The world is loud, and agriculture is always under attack. Telling the story is almost as important as the produc tion of our food, especially with the growing disconnect in younger age groups,” Lindsey explained.

THE PODCAST Lindsey has also collaborated with two other agvocates, Natasha Mortenson and Rebekkah Paske witz, to create a podcast, “Keeping It Rural Girls.” The trio presented their podcast to the Minnesota Ag ricultural Education Leadership Council (MAELC) Common Fund Grant to secure grant funding and were ecstatic to learn their efforts would be rewarded. “We are real ly excited to promote the diversity of ag and help teachers have more accessible information with ap plied lesson plans at their disposal,” Lindsey stated.
“Keeping It Rural Girls” has re corded several episodes that will be released around October 1. Sub jects include wild rice farming, in terviews with Dr. Temple Grandin and Dr. Duane Wulf, motivation al speakers, ag policy advocates and experts, turkey farming, and cranberry production with more to come. Each episode features casual conversations with producers with question-and-answers plus stories, current issues, and anecdotes. The podcast may be found on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and other ma jor media platforms. Classrooms across Minnesota may access the podcasts along with lesson plans for free because of the grant, and those in other states may purchase the plans for a small fee. In addition to the fundraising program and the podcast, Blond ies Butcher Shop will soon launch above Always cool, Lindsey poses in her cooler with beef carcass halves.
AGVOCATING Lindsey strives to be innovative in her business and her promotion of production agriculture. She created a fundraiser program for clubs and organizations including beef sticks, summer sausage, Christmas prime rib roasts, Easter hams, and snack bundles. Many 4-H clubs, FFA chapters, and sports teams have had great success with the concept. “People can only buy so many rolls of wrapping paper. I wanted to do something that would allow kids to promote protein while helping their organizations,” Lindsey said.

BLONDIES FUTURE The future is bright for Blondies as many more protein promotion ventures are planned and the de mand for locally raised and har vested meat increases. Most people in rural communities are disposed to patronizing small businesses in their communities, and traceabil ity in sourcing food is increasing ly important to Americans. These factors ensure lockers across the United States have a place on main streets and every opportunity to succeed. “This work is an art and it’s hard. Knowing we are making a difference in our communities, educating the younger generations, and spreading the truth about agri culture at the end of the day is what it’s all about,” Lindsey said. Lindsey certainly took the long way just to find herself back in her hometown. Her life experiences, both good and bad, have helped her become uniquely qualified to deal with the adversity all producers and agriculture businesses encounter. Her ability to defend agriculture to critics while operating a successful business and helping youth under stand the origins of their food make her an exceptional agvocate. learn more facebook.com/blondiesbutchershop “ This work is an art and it’s hard. RYE COCKTAILS FOR FEED
n the world of forages and cov er crops, cereal rye has quickly be come one of the most sought-after plant species for a wide range of reasons. This winter annual grain has shown great versatility for both livestock producers and crop farm ers.Cereal rye has the best winter hardiness of all winter annuals, which has made it very useful in short growing windows in the up per Midwest. As a winter annual, it has the opportunity to provide spring growth in a time period where nothing else is growing. That early spring growth has shown to reduce erosion and improve wa ter infiltration. The other unique attribute is its ability to suppress weeds. Rye has an allelopathic ef fect on other plant species, espe cially small-seeded broadleaves and grasses. This has proved to be very useful in crop rotations where soybeans follow the rye, reducing an herbicide pass. As a feed source, rye has the versatility to be a grazing, hay ing, or silage crop. Grazing rye in late April through May has filled a grazing void when newborn calves are needing dry ground. As a hay or silage crop, it’ll be ready to harvest in late May, leaving a nicely timed window to plant another crop. Cover crops in general have evolved from single species to multiple species mixes and we are seeing that trend take off with rye. Multispecies mixes have shown us that diversity promotes soil biology and hedges weather and soil vari abilities. The benefits we’ve seen from rye as a single species have been grand but can be expanded in a multispecies blend.

The low-cost feed producer needs to get creative to find sources of feed. Since we are back in a highcost feed market, if we have a planting window to grow feed, the reward will outweigh all risks.

your fall grazing yields. These plants are very nutritious and palatable and will prolong graz ing over a straight stand of rye. Oth er species like hairy vetch or red clover are solid choices for boosting for age quality on yourharvestedspring fields. These legumeshavehighercrudeproteinlevelsthancerealgrains, making for a higher-valued hay or silage that next spring. As fall draws near, take a look at your seeding window options. Winter annuals can be planted from August through mid-October. Corn silage harvest provides a perfect window to plant back into and if soybean harvest is early, we should also have time in early October for a planting. Aerial application over corn fields is becoming a sound practice when rye is used. These fly-on blends should happen in late summer as our corn starts to defo liate.Forage supplies won’t be abun dant for cashing winter supplies.

Other procedures that can be per formed that are optional include implants, BVD testing, other ad ditional vaccinations not required for a Green Tag, or vaccine given before 4 months of age. There is a place to list these optional proce dures on the preconditioning certif icate if performed. In addition, the calves will need to be weaned and bunk broke to a ration for at least 30 days prior to the sale. Also, calves must be owned at least 60 days prior to the sale as well. All of this needs to oc cur before a preconditioning certifi cate can be issued and signed by the veterinarian and the owner/agent of the calves.
n the last article, I talked about preconditioning prior to weaning in order to optimize the health of the calves. I did mention some de tails that would be necessary for the calves to be gold tagged. Even though the Green Tag and Gold Tag programs are an Iowa based pro gram, they serve as a blueprint for a sound preconditioning program for cattle producers from any state. The program was started in 1965 by the Iowa Veterinary Medical Asso ciation with input from the Iowa Cattlemen’s Association. Chang es have occurred over the years, evolving to the two current Green Tag and Gold Tag programs.
On occasion, we will have a pro ducer that has had the processing done and a green tag has been ap plied, yet they want to sell without weaning. In this case, we will write up a certificate from the clinic de scribing the work we have done to the calves and state for instance that they have not been weaned. This is not an official certificate, and the calves are not considered fully pre conditioned. In this case, the calves will sell as green tagged, but not preconditioned. Most of the sales in Iowa are preconditioning sales in the fall and usually these calves will sell after calves that have been issued the official Iowa Precondi tioning Certificate. GOLD TAG PROGRAM For a calf to receive a Gold Tag, they will need to be at least 4 months old and receive the same vaccinations, parasite treatments, and castration/dehorn procedures as the Green Tag. In addition, they will need to be booster vaccinat ed for IBR, BVD, PI3 and BRSV, Mannheimia hemolytica, Histophi lus somnus, and the 7-way Clostrid ial complex. There

For a Green Tag program, the calves need to be at least 4 months old at the time they are adminis tered the vaccines and treatments for internal and external parasites. Required vaccines are a 5-way vi ral vaccine for IBR, BVD, PI3, and BRSV. Also required are vaccines for Mannheimia hemolytica, His tophilus somnus, and the 7-way Clostridial complex. Parasite treat ments for both internal and external parasites are also required. These have to be provided and adminis tered by the veterinarian as they will have to sign and verify that these procedures have been done and vaccine has been handled properly. Castrations and dehorning are also required and can be performed at any time from birth onward. These can be performed by the owner or veterinarian, but the vet erinarian will be required to exam ine all calves to verify they are cas trated and dehorned at the time the green tag is inserted in the calf’s left ear. All of these procedures need to be performed at least 21 days prior to the sale of the calves.
Health & Reproduction questions answered and explained.
The Iowa Green/Gold Tag Pre conditioning program has been highly successful and widely adopt ed in Iowa. This program continues to add value for both the sellers and buyers of these calves. Any veteri narian who is a member of the Iowa Veterinary Medical Association can be involved with this program. Work with your herd veterinarian to implement this program in your herd and reap the benefits. learn more collisonembryoservices.com Dr. Vince Collison is co-owner of Collison Embryo | Collison Veterinary Services PAC in Rockwell City, Iowa. needs to be at least a 14-day wait ing period before these booster vac cinations can be given. The actual gold tag will be applied at the time booster vaccinations are given. One vaccine requirement that is different for the Gold Tag is that both rounds of the 5-way viral vaccine need to be modified live. So, while the 5-way vaccine given for the Green Tag can be killed or modified live, a producer may want to use a modified live if they think they may want to Gold Tag their set of calves later. The modified live requirement was recently imple mented due to input from the actual buyers of preconditioned calves. On the Gold Tag program calves can be sold 14 days after the booster vac cinations.Castration/dehorning needs to be at least 21 days prior to the sale. Also, the time for being weaned and bunk broke to a ration prior to selling is extended to 60 days for gold tagged calves, as well as ownership for 60 days. If all of this is done, an official Iowa Gold Tag Preconditioning Certificate can be issued. While it is preferable to perform these vaccinations 14 to 21 days prior to weaning, it is not a requirement as long as all of the procedures fall into the guidelines listed above.
We also get some producers who buy green tagged calves and then want to have them gold tagged. This is possible if the calves also have the original preconditioning certificate, and the tags are verified. The sec ond round of booster vaccinations can be given, and the new owner will also have to own these calves for 60 days prior to sale as well. If a producer buys calves that have a green tag and no official precondi tioning certificate, they will have to go through the entire program of vaccinations, parasite treatments, and verify castration/dehorning to be re-green tagged and qualify for a preconditioning certificate. These will have to be owned for 60 days prior to sale as well. New preconditioning certifi cates will be issued in these cases listing the new owner and signa tures.
RESELLING GREEN TAGGED CALVES
Also, we will get producers who want to resell green tagged calves they have bought as preconditioned green tagged calves. This is possi ble only if the new owner has the preconditioning certificate and
the veterinarian verifies the green tag numbers listed on the certifi cate. In addition, the new owner has to own the calves for 60 days prior to selling. UPGRADING FROM GREEN TO GOLD

The Davis family has been in volved in the cattle business “all their lives.” In 2009, while manag ing Eastfield Farm in Shelbyville, Tenn., the Davis family purchased an Angus cow in hopes of develop ing a herd for Allison. Two years later, they bought a set of Angus cows, and the operation has grown from that point forward. Mark Davis Family Angus con centrates on breeding sound, func tional cattle that will go into the real world and have a calf every year. “We want cattle that are attractive and can show, but also be produc tive cows after they show,” Mark said. When selecting herd genetics, the Davis family looks for animals with depth of body and added muscle. They analyze an animal’s EPDs, but it is not their sole focus. “We select animals that are easy-flesh ing, sound in structure, and have a maternal look with some spring of rib,” Mark explained.
SHOW RING SUCCESS
Relying on the quality and lon gevity of their cow families has proven to be a successful strategy for the Davis family. All the An gus females Allison has shown through the years have been bred and owned, except for her first two heifers. “We are amazed by the suc cess we have had,” Mark shared. Through the years the Davis family has exhibited nine division champi below Allison Davis with her 2022 NJAS Grand Champion Bred and Owned Female.

COW FAMILIES Family is everything to Mark, Loretta, and Allison and that ex tends to their cattle operation. Mark Davis Family Angus focuses on de veloping cow families. “We believe in cow families,” Mark explained. “We have about three cow families we mainly breed around and have multiple generations of all those families.”

When it comes down to it, the Da vises simply breed cows they like to look at. “When it is cold and there is ice, it easier to go out to feed if you have good cows to look at,” Mark said.
above The Davises utilize their proven cow families to produce champions. ons or reserve division champions, as well as three grand or reserve champions at the National Junior Angus Show (NJAS). At this year’s NJAS in Kan sas City, Mo., Allison won grand champion bred and owned heifer with AED Rita 037H (aka Harley). Harley is the product of three gen erations of breeding at Mark Davis Family Angus. In addition, Alli son’s cow/calf pair, AED Rita 821F, who is a maternal sister to Harley, won reserve grand champion bred and owned cow/calf pair. To make the 2022 junior national show even better for the Davis family, Allison was named premier junior breeder.

The Davis family has found sticking to the basics benefits their cattle operation. They consistently retain and breed for sound moving and complete females that are easy keeping. They refuse to waver from traits and phenotypes that work for their operation. “We have never single trait bred our females or fol lowed any fads. We keep an eye on EPDs, but do not go to extremes,” Mark explained.

The Davises enjoy seeing the ge netics from their herd go on to bring success to other producers and fam ilies. The Davises love watching the heifers they have sold to other families win in the show ring and produce in the pasture. All the Davises’ heifer calves are sold by private treaty. A few years ago, they started selling heifers in February with a bid-off via social media and their website. Currently, they are planning a private treaty bid-off sale for February 5, 2023. Bull calves born at Mark Davis Family Angus are usually sold in a group to be raised and sold to pro ducers out West.
FEEDING PROGRAM
MARKETING CATTLE
The Davises pay close attention to the nutritional requirements of their herd. Making sure their herd has good nutrition pays off in areas such as calf vigor and calving in tervals. Mark Davis Family Angus utilizes a forage-based program. The cattle get hay in the winter and graze on grass during the summer. Due to the operation calving most of its cattle in the fall, the Davis es supplement pairs with a couple pounds of grain a day during the winter months. When calves reach 2 to 3 months old, the Davises start them on creep feed. Additionally, cattle are offered a complete miner al year around.
When the Davis trio looks to the future, they plan to continue to raise quality Angus females for ju niors to exhibit and turn into cows. “One thing that we feel is important is that we feel as cattle breeders we strive to make the next generation of cattle better than the last,” Mark stated. The future holds a significant change for Mark Davis Family Angus. A third of the trio is off to college. Allison started attending Kansas State University in August. “She will be greatly missed around the farm!” Mark said. Allison will be back in the sum mers ready to work show calves. She has two more years of eligibil ity to show at Angus junior com petitions. And better yet, she has a lifetime to utilize the lessons she’s learned on the farm to make her fu ture endeavors a success.

Cowboy approved recipes used by our favorite country cooks. My mom was always a big cook while I was growing up. She loved to make desserts of all kinds. I would join her in the kitchen, so I could eat the results as soon as they were done. “ Where did you learn to cook? ” “ What is your most requested dish? Ham balls are the most requested meal in my house. They are sweet and juicy.”
What is your least favorite job in the kitchen? My least favorite job in the kitchen would be cleaning up the dishes; they just keep com ing.” “ Tell us about yourself. “My husband and I, along with our five daughters, reside on the family farm in Rockwell City, Iowa. We are all very in volved in the day-to-day operations of run ning our family’s large animal veterinary clinic, as well as row crop and a purebred Angus herd. My husband along with my two oldest daughters are veterinarians, my middle daughter is going to cosme tology school, and our two youngest daughters are in high school. So, this season of our life is very busy and entertaining. As a family we enjoy time spent together working on show heifers and going to shows. Aside from working outside, we enjoy cheering on the Cyclones in our spare time!”

We sort heifers and only develop the animals that fit our criteria, typically placing the top 60% into development. Temperament, growth and overall health is important and always on our mind as we work with these heifers. If we feel an animal would not make a superb replacement, she is culled from the group. Now to look at some of the market reports that we have been seeing in the barns. The fat cattle market has been on a hot streak for several weeks, until this past week, when we experienced a slight dip in the market. We have seen some highs in the mid to high forties, but these have been some extremes. Most cash cattle in the country have been trading at forty level or slightly higher the past couple of weeks. I expect there to be a few bumps in the road, but I expect this fat cattle deal to continue an upward trend going into the new year and into spring. How high we can go, that is the million-dollar question! The higher fat cattle market is driving a higher price for the feeder cattle market as well, even with the higher feedstuff inputs. We have seen some front end big strings of 800 pounds bringing well into the sixties and some 600-pound cattle bringing into the seventies and eighties. Once again these are some extreme tops. We have been trying to fill up our own lots as fast as possible, as I am not sure the feeder cattle are going to get any cheaper. We have been able to find cattle at cheaper prices than that and so when we do projects they are in the black. The cull cow and bull market has lagged the fat market, as from all reports there have been around six percent more cows slaughtered than last year, making for a fairly good supply of cows. Once this slows down, which will more than likely be into next year, look for the feed cow and bull market to take off with the same fire as the fat cattle market.Thebreeding stock market has been up and down as well. Re cently, I heard of some 3-year-old commercial pairs bringing the high $2,000 and then I look around and can buy all the running age cows I want for $1,200 to $1,500. If you are looking to expand, I think now is the time to buy some of the reasonably priced cows, as I think with increased cow slaughter we are going to be in a short cattle sup ply over the next couple of years.
Wishing everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

COLD WEATHER BUT HOT CATTLE MARKET
s I wrote this article, we have received our first snowstorm of the winter and my four little ones could not wait to throw on their snow pants and go play in the white stuff! Me on the other hand, not so excit ed about leaving the warmth and comfort of my office. It is because they are looking forward to joy and fun and I am dreading frozen wa ters and/or sick cattle. Either way, it is safe to say that winter is upon us!

What about the beef cattle industry excites you the most? Helping our commercial cus tomers with forwarded-mind ed genetics to help produce the op timal bovine for the times. We want genetic progress while maintaining structural integrity. It’s our job as an auction market to lead our customers to a successful sale day. We couldn’t do what we love without them.” I am a third-generation sale barn operator. I started rais ing breeding stock cattle when I was 19 years old. My family has owned and operated, Bloomfield Livestock Market, for 53 years. My uncle, Phil Schooley, was inducted into the ICA Hall of Fame. My brother, Tyler, helps me operate the sale barn along side by father, Ron. Tyler assists with the daily chores on the ranch with seedstock as well. I am grateful for Tyler, his wife, Kallie, and their three kids. We run 375 cows and im plant between 150 to 190 embryos each spring. We plan to sell 85 bulls and 50 bred females in our February 2023 production sale. I have three children and they are a huge help during calving season. My wife, Liz, helps with the bookkeeping.”
About the Stockman. Your go-to sorting apparatus? Hands and feet. We don’t use any sorting sticks, whips or paddles. We just go nice and slow with the cattle.” Your favorite non-ranch activity to do in your free time? I love coaching baseball and playing golf. We are a big time sports family. Any sport we’re all in for a game – play ball!” below The Schooley Family (l-r): Josias Mongollon, Haven, Roman, Elizabeth, Houstin, Douglas Rojas, and Hannah. Josias and Douglas stay with The Schooleys when they’re not playing college baseball.
