Samar leads Eastern Visayas with highest Inflation Rate

Samar has claimed the top spot for the highest inflation rate in the entire Eastern Visayas region, standing at 5.6%, as per the latest data shared by the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) on their official Facebook page on February 16th.

According to the data released by the PSA, the decline in the regional Inflation Rate (IR) for January 2024 can be primarily attributed to the reduced IR in the heavily weighted category of food and non-alcoholic beverages, which decreased from 8.3 percent in December 2023

to 7.3 percent in January 2024. Following this was the transport sector, experiencing a quicker annual decline of 2.2 percent compared to the 1.3 per-cent decline recorded in December 2023. Additionally, lower IR in restaurants and accommodation services, dropping to 4.1 percent from 5.3 percent in December 2023, also contributed to this downtrend.

The Inflation Rate (IR) in Eastern Visayas decreased to 3.8 percent in January 2024, down from the 4.3 percent recorded in December 2023. The regional IR exceeded

the national IR, which stood at 2.8 percent in January 2024. Comparatively, in January 2023, the regional IR was also higher at 6.9 percent.

Furthermore, compared to their inflation rates (IRs) in December 2023, three provinces in Eastern Visayas—Eastern Samar, Leyte, and Samar, along with the Highly Urbanized City (HUC), Tacloban City—experienced a decrease in IRs in January 2024. Samar had the highest IR at 5.6 percent, followed by Biliran at 4.9 percent, Northern Samar at 4.0 percent, Tacloban City at 3.1 percent,

Eastern Samar at 3.5 percent, and Leyte at 3.3 percent. Southern Leyte rec-orded the lowest IR at 2.6 percent.

During the month, all regions experienced a deceleration in inflation rates compared to their respective rates in December 2023. Among these regions, Eastern Visayas ranked fourth in terms of inflation rate, standing at 3.8 percent. The Davao Region recorded the highest inflation rate at 4.4 percent, while both Cagayan Valley and Ilocos Region registered the lowest rates, both at 1.5 percent.

Is it really in the dying of the old that comes something new?

“CNN Philippines will discontinue operations on all media platforms effective Wednesday, January 31, 2024. A trusted source of news and information, CNN Philippines is accessible on free-to-air TV, cable and digital platforms,” CNN Philippines said in its announcement.

The recent shutdown of CNN Philippines has sent shockwaves through the media landscape, leaving many to ponder the implications for press freedom and the broader implications for the public. The closure of this news outlet raises critical questions about the state of media independence and the challenges faced by journalism.

CNN Philippines has been a go-to source for many Filipinos

looking for trustworthy information as it is known to be the only English-language channel available on free TV in the country and its dedication to providing accurate and unbiased news. Rappler reports that since operations started in 2015, losses have exceeded P5 billion leading to their shutdown affecting approximately 300 employees. The cessation of this major news outlet concerns journalists about the health of the media industry.

The incident brings attention to the press freedom problem in the Philippines as a whole. Any democracy must have a free press in order for its people to be able to make informed decisions and hold those in power responsible. The closure of CNN Philippines prompts a reflection on the challenges faced by journalists in an environment where press freedom may be under threat.

With the CNN Philippines’ shutdown, it is important for the public to remain vigilant and demand transparency. The discontinuation of a news outlet should serve as an eye-opener to protect and strengthen the foundations of press freedom because only through an independent media can citizens be empowered.

The hope is that the spirit of journalism will prevail, leading to the emergence of new platforms committed to delivering reliable and unbiased news. The closure of CNN Philippines is undoubtedly a setback, but it should also guarantee a renewed commitment to press freedom, ensuring that the public continues to have access to diverse and independent sources of information.

Grooving with Political Cha-Cha

In Philippine politics, the metaphorical dance of change often mirrors the complex movements of the cha-cha dance. As the nation contemplates the prospect of Charter Change (Cha-Cha), it resembles to orchestrating a dance where the steps must be carefully executed to avoid missteps and create harmony.

Just like in the cha-cha, where partners must be in sync to execute seamless transitions between quick and slow steps, Charter Change requires a delicate balance between progress and preservation. Stakeholders argue that amending the constitution is a necessary evolution, like introducing new dance moves to keep the performance timely. On the contrary, skeptics compare it to a risky dance, fearing that missteps may disrupt the delicate bal-

ance that holds the nation together.

Former presidents of the Philippines, such as Ramos, Estrada, Aquino, and Duterte, have attempted to dance into the beat of Cha-Cha. However, they were dancing out of sync with the rhythm. Hastily executing the amendments without properly grasping the right steps, one after another, leads to bad impression to people.

Navigating the steps of Charter Change requires a deli-

cate balance between ambition and wisdom, same as the graceful movements of the cha-cha. It’s a dance that demands collaboration and a deep understanding of the diverse rhythms that define Philippine society. As stakeholders engage in this political choreography, it’s crucial to foster dialogue, transparency, and inclusivity, ensuring that the dance of Charter Change reflects the collective aspirations and values of the Filipino people.

The Cha-Cha dance involves intricate coordination, much like the collaboration needed among lawmakers, stakeholders, and citizens in the Charter Change process. As we waltz through the discourse of Charter Change, let’s aim for a political dance that echoes unity, inclusivity, and a synchronized vision for the future. Just as in the cha-cha, where each step is purposeful, the journey of Charter Change requires thoughtful consideration to ensure that the dance propels the nation forward without losing its fundamental essence.

Let us learn each step in ChaCha and meet halfway to achieve synchronization, because a dance will never be successfully executed when one refuses to sway in chorus.

The results of Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) last 2022 provide insights into the strengths and weaknesses of the education systems worldwide. As for the Philippines, the results serve as a reflection of a poor education system and the ineffectiveness of its educational policies and practices, raising concerns to many.

PISA results once again emphasize the Philippines’ struggle to compete on a global scale, particularly in key areas such as reading, mathematics, and science. This continuous challenge highlights the urgent need for targeted interventions to improve educational outcomes across the board.

Personally, I think there are various ways to address this adversity, such as investing in more infrastructure or more school buildings—especially in rural areas, teacher training, and curriculum development—is crucial. Aside from that, socio-economic disparities are one of the barriers that continue to affect the learning of many Filipino students. Sadly, we are aware and should face the painful reality that poverty is what often leads students to issues such as malnutrition, inadequate housing, and limited access to educational resources, hindering academic success for those striving students.

In an era where technology reigns supreme, the arrival of Artificial Intelligence (AI) has revolutionized various aspects in life. Among these AI tools, ChatGPT stands as a formidable example. It is a chatbot AI technology which has a wide range of functions that extends from engaging in human-like conversations to providing solutions to inquiries and writing creative works. This AI tool emerges just like a Trojan horse, luring us with convenience and efficiency while concealing its harmful effects.

In the 2024 study of Similarweb, the Philippines ranked 5th among different countries with the most number of ChatGPT users all over the globe. This implies

that many Filipinos have been greatly influenced and unknowingly affected by its downsides; plagiarism, hindering creativity and the inability to expand one’s capabilities because of reliance.

Even though how fascinating the ChatGPT functions and how accessible to the mass because it’s free, most of what this AI generates came directly from the vast sources on the internet, making it an act of plagiarism.

The ongoing conflict between Israel and Palestine captured the attention of the world.

The conflict has its own history. In the late 19th and early 20th century, Jewish settlers and immigrants arrived in Palestine—the era when the Zionist movement was birthed.

In 1984, the establishment of the State of Israel heightened the dispute, which led to various wars and territorial conflicts that continued up to this day.

Death of journalism

Neithan Saman Astilla

As a young journalist, am saddened by the loss of a cable news network like CNN Philippines because it also signifies a major loss of financial investments, serving as a source of information. Like other countries, the Philippines is a dangerous place for journalists. Journalists are tortured, killed, and harassed on the job they have taken oath in the service of many Filipinos. In the history of Philippine Journalism between 1992 and 2024, Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) reported 159 journalists and media workers being killed. These 159 journalists being killed are not just numbers reported on news sites or tabloids, but the same people who are dedicated and selfless in the pursuit of truth and accountability. Furthermore, the closure of CNN Philippines is also a reflection of how journalism is still regarded as an underrated profession.

In the aspect of democracy and press freedom, one can note that journalists are purveyors of history, culture and heritage. Their passion for storytelling is beyond pen and paper. They risk their lives just to bring unique stories from different walks of life to a global scale. With drive and purpose, they put their soul in the narratives of others that they articulate without fear.

The closure of media networks and the assassination of journalists disempower the public right to know. The country like the Philippines is a battle game for the journalists and the public to continue preserving history.

As I am writing this, still have fears in the practice of campus journalism, yet emboldened to make a difference in my own little way. In every by-line I produce is a risk I delve into. However, even if the state challenges and questions the credibility of some journalists, I will put my heart out to serve for others to avoid the unprecedented death of journalism.

As the pages of time turn, one cannot help but wonder when the symphony of solutions will play, conducting a rhythmic pattern that addresses the never-ending issue of flooding. COMMENTARY LETTER TO THE EDITOR

The Israel-Palestine conflict remains a deeply rooted issue with a complex history. The ongoing tensions have led to periods of violence and suffering for people on both sides. Understanding the conflict involves acknowledging historical grievances, territorial disputes, and the impact on civilian populations.

The article “A powerful indictment of Israel’s war vs Palestine” published by Philstar on November 4, 2023, highlights the unjust killings and brutal deaths of people in Gaza. The director of the UN High Commissioner for Human

Rights (OHCHR) in New York is calling for a more assertive position in a compelling condemnation. “We are seeing a genocide unfolding before our eyes, and the organization that we serve appears powerless to stop it,” he emphasized.

In Gaza, a heart-wrenching narrative unfolds as its people navigate the relentless challenges of conflict, bearing the weight of inhumane killings scarred by hardship, a stark reminder that human lives should never serve as the testing ground for political experiments.

In my opinion, I strongly feel that the statistical records of PISA about Philippines being at the bottom among different countries in terms of reading really sets me off.

Realizing that the 15-year-old students who participated at the said study have gone through difficulties in reading and comprehending and then imagining that they will later on contribute and carry the Philippines just gives me the feeling of dismay. I suppose that what I’ve heard on the news is that educational stakeholders have made its move to address this issue leading to the rise

of catch-up Fridays. Its implementation will serve as a bandage to us, fixing student’s wounded comprehension. By this collective contributions in improving one’s reading and comprehension skills, I’ll be finally at ease knowing that Philippines’ literacy will improve and Philippines’ cloudy route finally discovers a clear destination. I am hoping that at the very least our country soon enough won’t be at the same place, implying that we improved. It is said that Philippines is in high rate of literacy right?

So let’s stand up to it and show the world what we’re really capable of.

HE IS S UPER M

For someone who is in service for 15 years, a day with him is worth a million stories.

I’ve been studying in Oquendo National High School for 5 years.

Since grade 7, witnessed the hard work that each staff exerts in his or her work. I’m the living witness of their untiring efforts in making the school a best place to ever be.

Going to school is the everyday scene I love the most. The warm smiles of staff became my breakfast. Their “Maupay na Aga” became my inspiration to start the day.

As I would be studying for eight hours in a day, I decided to spend the day with one of the men behind Oquendo National High School’s neatness. Being with him feels like an adventure. It’s like entering a book and diving into pages full of amazing and inspiring stories.

A 58-year-old diligent man, a husband, a father, and a worker, Mario O. Peru is a steady true man—true to his words and consistent to his work.

He came from a small barangay situated in the city of waterfalls, Oquendo Poblacion. Growing up, he has always dreamt of finishing his study and building his own family. He took his elementary education at Oquendo Elementary School. He attained his secondary education at Oquendo National High School, formerly known as Oquendo High School which was located at the barangay’s market way back his time.

Mario O. Peru is commonly referred to as “Manong Mario” by students and teachers, while some also call him “kuya Mario.” From the way he shows his strong aura to the way he talks, Manong Mario is such kind and close to the hearts of every student.

Embedded with smile and the heart to serve the school, he stands in the front gate, welcoming

every student and teachers with his father-like voice. After class, I could see him roam around the campus, individually checking each class room and cleaning trash bins. Tired but filled with inspiration, he’s always one of the last to leave the school.

He is flexible. Manong Mario can do lots of things. He can clean the entire school, fix electrical dam ages and he can even help you one at a time. He is always the one called by teachers to fix damages inside their classroom and students would approach him to ask for something.

Whenever I would sit under the shade of a tree, I see him work hard, giving his best to serve the students and teachers. For 5 years, this is the longest conversation I had with him. I never had the chance to ask how he was. If I do, it’s either he’s busy or there are hindrances.

“Pira man imo anak, Kuya?” I gently asked. “Duha akon anak. An usa may asawa na,an usa naman grad uate na napasar na liwat sa board for teachers,” he added.

His answers made my world stopped. I was silent. I didn’t imagine he had a son who’s now a fresh graduate and ready to work.

“Makakaon la tulo ka beses sa usa ka adlaw, okay na.” This is what he said when I asked him what his goal in life is.

As a student who has many dreams in life, I was totally humbled out by his words. I didn’t know such man whose only goal is to have a complete meal for a day existed.

In the archipelago of the Philippines, amid its breathtaking landscapes and vibrant culture, lies a persistent and painful reality: the state of public health. Despite strides made in certain areas, the Philippines continues to grapple with significant challenges in ensuring the well-being of its citizens, reflecting a system in dire need of attention and reform. The COVID-19 pandemic has ruthlessly exposed the vulnerabilities within the Philippine healthcare system, laying bare the consequences of underinvestment, infrastructure deficiencies, and systemic shortcomings. Overwhelmed hospitals, insufficient medical supplies, and healthcare workers pushed to their limits underscore the urgency of addressing longstanding issues. One of the critical issues plaguing public health in the Philippines is the gaping disparity in access to healthcare services between urban centers and rural areas. While major cities boast state-of-the-art facilities and medical expertise, remote provinces often lack even the most basic healthcare infrastructure, leaving millions underserved and vulnerable.

RURAL REALITIES

In the narrative of Philippine healthcare, the haunting truths tightly grip the heart of the rural landscape. Communities grapple with challenges that constantly go unnoticed. Rural areas echo with silent battles that are often overlooked by the people in power. The struggle for basic healthcare continues as a poignant saga. Limited access to quality healthcare, scarce resources, and geographical isolation that makes it more challenging to reach help seems to be the main foundation of their struggles. The country’s remote areas, where the first step to wellness is a journey full of obstacles, silently pleas for a better approach towards availability of excellent care.

PRICE OF SURVIVAL

Death is much more affordable, as survival comes with a steep cost.

Most Filipinos endure the pain on their deathbeds, killing time until the grim reaper fetches them. To wait patiently and cry the pain away is easier than to give their families financial burden.

With the high cost of medical treatments, medications, and procedures, families find themselves entangled in a web of financial strain. In the data released by the 2nd Philippine Wellness Index in July 2019, 40 percent of 1,350 Filipino respondents from various parts of the country expressed uncertainty on their capability of paying medical bills. To be able to afford qual-

ity treatments, families spend thousands, which leads to sacrificing life savings or sinking into numerous debts that they still compensate even when one already journeys to the afterlife.

STORMS BEHIND SMILES

Filipinos are known for their warm smiles and resilient spirit, there exists a hidden tempest—storm clouds that shroud mental health. The facade of cheerful exteriors seeks to be peeled off and delve into the profound mental health challenges faced by individuals in a society that often associates strength with silent suffering.

Behind the smiles lie stories of masked turmoil against the stigma surrounding mental health. The belief

of some Filipinos that mental struggles are “Arte lang” contributes to the hesitance to openly discuss or seek support for psychological well-being.

These internal storms of individuals are frequently weathered in silence, battling societal expectations and pervasive notion that mental health concerns should be kept hidden.

Furthermore, the acknowledgment of the mental health tempest that rages beneath the surface of the nation’s smiles should be met by compassion and understanding.

The strain of societal expectations, economic pressures, and the challenge of modern life converges into a perfect storm, leaving one shattered.

SIRENS IN SILENCE

In the symphony of healthcare, there exists a haunting melody that often goes unheard — the silent cries and struggles of those within the system. The muted pleas, and the overlooked challenges that echo through the corridors of hospitals and healthcare facilities reveal a narrative that demands attention.

Within this realm, the unheard woes manifest as a consequence of understaffing and overworked healthcare professionals. As these silent sirens wail in the background, the mental and physical toll on doctors, nurses, and support staff heightens. With heavy caseloads, extended hours, and the relentless pressure to provide qual-

ity care, healthcare workers find themselves navigating a battlefield where burnout, stress, and compassion fatigue become silent adversaries. Overwhelmed healthcare systems leads to delayed treatments, compromised attention, and the struggle for timely medication. These invisible battles waged by individuals who are left to navigate the complexities of healthcare, whose voices are muted by the greedy people.

Moreover, there must be a concerted effort to enhance healthcare governance and transparency, rooting out corruption and ensuring that resources are allocated efficiently and equitably. Empowering local communities, leveraging technology, and fostering partnerships between the public

and private sectors are also crucial steps towards building a more resilient and responsive healthcare system.

As we confront the painful reality of public health in the Philippines, we must recognize that the status quo is untenable. It is a collective responsibility to demand accountability from policymakers, mobilize resources effectively, and advocate for policies that prioritize the health and well-being of all Filipinos.

Only through sustained commitment and action can we truly achieve the vision of a healthier, more prosperous Philippines for generations to come.
