The Consumer Electronic Show (CES) is back this year, being held in Las Vegas it allows inventors and companies to show off their latest and greatest gadgets on the planet. With technology ranging from the Playstation Phone to even 3D TV’s without the glasses. This is the one place to be if you like technology of any kind. Last year we saw the beginning of the tablet PC wars, starting with Apple’s new invention the iPad. Apple claim to of sold over 300,000 units on the first day of launch, now companies like Samsung and Lenovo are planning on creating their own version of the iPad. Samsung have already released their own “Samsung Galaxy Tab” and Lenovo have announced at CES that they will be creating one later this year. Priced at around $520 it will cost about the same as its rivals. Wireless electricity, was one of the most talked about technology of last years CES, the stand used shown a 32 inch flat screen plugged into a DVD Player using a wireless HDMI cable. These were then both being powered by wireless electricity. The company WiTricity claim that you can charge your phone, laptop and even power your TV as long as they are in the range of the adaptor. It can stretch up to around 2 metres before you become out of range. They plan top have this in every home by around 2018 but we think it may be sooner.
The New Motorola Xoom—Competition for the iPad? Here is an example of a new pc tablet launching later this year, it is the Motorola Xoom and is the first of many tablets to be shown at CES later this week. It uses an Android operating system which allows apps to be bought from the Android Market. The size of the tablet is one of the biggest on sale, measuring at a 10” and is all fully touch screen which is another tablet pc first. So What’s The Difference? The main differences between the Ipad and other tablets like the Motorola Xoom is mostly the style of the software used, the Android software is very different compared to the more popular Iphone software IOS 4, aswell as the apps and the fact that all new tablets have SD card slots and the Xoom has a small webcam

3D Camcorders—The Way Forward: Although it looks strange, this odd camcorder is the start of the future. It’s a specialised 3D camcorder capable of recording anything you want in 3D ready to play back on a 3D ready TV which is why there are two mini lenses. The camcorder has been made by Sony and everything is recorded right to the SD card memory. Some of the camcorders unveiled at the Consumer Electronic Show even allow you to watch your 3D footage on the camcorder screen and have it jump out at you, without glasses! What really shocked us is that some of the top of the range camcorders coming out later this year even have a built in 3D projector so you can show what you’ve filmed earlier without finding a close by 3D ready TV. It’s a totally brilliant idea once again by Sony, the future is here! Now That’s A TV—The Samsung D8000 This amazing Samsung TV has just been announced at the Consumer Electronic Show in Las Vegas, mostly because it has the thinnest frame in the world. 0.2 inches deep to be in fact. Samsung are trying to make the best 3D televisions on the market, and in my opinion they are doing a very good job of it so far, the TV’s announced at CES show prove that Samsung have what it takes to be the best TV retailers in the world.

Last year saw the huge and still eventful launch of the Xbox Kinect which was shortly followed by the Playstation Move. Both of these consoles are huge in the gaming industry and both sides have unique benefits to buying their add on. For example at CES this month Microsoft have announced avatars will soon be able to be used with the Kinect. What's your view Playstation or Xbox? Have your say at our website. www.thestudentmagazine.co.uk What Microsoft Say: Kinect brings games and entertainment to life in extraordinary new ways without using a controller. Imagine controlling movies and music with the wave of a hand or the sound of your voice. With Kinect, technology evaporates, letting the natural magic in all of us shine. Advantages: As Xbox have explained enough, with the Kinect “You are the controller” there is no, little handheld device or wrist straps to wear, if you turn an invisible wheel in front of your Kinect you will turn the wheel on a formula 1 car, it is really that simple. The software is powered by a midlands based company called “Rare” who helped create the Kinect and some of the games too. Disadvantages: Xbox have been receiving some complaints about using the Kinect with the new Xbox Elite console as it claims to cause the dreaded three rings of death, which every Xbox lover hates. But apart from that there really isn't much wrong with the Kinect. What We Think: Amazing, if you love playing games that you can interact with, especially if you don’t like using controllers. However if your more into “Call Of Duty” then its best you stick to the controller for now.
The Student Magazine
What Sony Say: “PlayStation®Move redefines motion gaming with the most immersive and realistic gaming experience only possible on the PlayStation®3 system. The simple, easy-touse controller captures a full range of motion giving you ultimate control over how you play the game. With a diverse selection of games and new ones launching all the time, you can enjoy hours of fun with friends and family.”
Advantages The advantages of the Playstation Move is that it uses the Playstation eye, which most consoles already use, due to the launch of the Playstation eye around a year ago. From when I used it, it was very responsive and worked well as well as picking up all of my reactions for example: when I turn the PSMove controller the bat I would use turns also, this is what I found great about the Move. Disadvantages The disadvantages are that you still need the controller, unlike the XBOX Kinect where “you are the controller” the Playstation Move still requires separate controllers for now. What we think The games are amazing for the console and games such as “the shoot” make you be in the popular movies being released. Its great for if your not fussed about controllers but if you want to live more in the future the XBOX Kinect is the way to go

Formula 1 Cars Set for Major Changes Formula 1 cars are set for more radical changes in time for the 2013 season as bosses try to make the sport more efficient and possibly more exciting. The cars will have much smaller wings and specially shaped underfloors designed to generate downforce in a different way. The cars will also use 35% less fuel and be slightly slower while be more challenging to drive – making overtaking more likely. The plans have been drawn up by engineers Patrick Head and Rory Byrne and if the teams and the Technical Working Group (TWG) agree, the changes will be the biggest since 1983.
The major changes will beMuch smaller front and rear wings • A much greater proportion of the downforce will be • •
• •
created by the underfloor, ratherthan the wings A major reduction in the amount of total downforce created by the car To make this achievable, the underfloor of the car will be shaped along its length to generate downforce (for the first time since 1982) – currently cars have underfloors which are flat between the wheels The average proportion of a lap that the driver is able to spend at full throttle will be cut from 70% (2010) to 50% in 2013 To ensure high cornering speeds, tyres will remain large and chunky
