James Arthur Surpasses 1 Million Record Sales As his debut single ‘Impossible’ surpasses the 1 million sales mark in the UK, X Factor 2012 champion James Arthur signs a recording deal with Simon Cowell’s label Syco Music.
"I am thrilled to be part of the Syco family, working with Simon and his team is exactly where I want to be. I can't wait to get into the studio to start work on my record!" , says James. Released in December 2012, ‘Impossible’ went straight to number one, becoming the fastest selling single of the year. In just five weeks, it has gone on to sell more than 1 million copies in the UK and was yesterday nominated for the Best British Single award at next month’s BRIT Awards.
"Hitting the million mark in around a month is a fantastic achievement for James Arthur. X Factor winners often score strong first week sales, but to push through to the million mark so quickly is truly impressive." comments Martin Talbot, the Official Charts Company’s Managing Director. Mentored by Nicole Scherzinger on the show, James wowed the country immediately from his first appearance - a spellbinding version of Tulisa’s ‘Young’. Having honed his craft from a young age, instantly memorable renditions of ‘The Power of Love’, ‘Let’s Get It On’ and Adele’s ‘Hometown Glory’ have cemented his status as a hugely promising and supremely talented musician.

APPRECIATED IN AN INSTANT
2012 ON TWITTER 2012 has been a pretty spectacular year. We had the Queen’s (rainy) Diamond Jubilee, the London 2012 Olympics, the re-elect of President Obama and the Duke & Duchess of Cambridge announcing the expectation of their first child. Those are just a few of last year’s
highlights, all of which were made even more special through Twitter. People around the world live-tweeted pictures and opinions, bringing their experiences into all of our lives. Here are a few of our favourite Twitter moments of 2012.
Picture: President Obama tweeted this picture simply captioned “4 more years”.
The most popular tweet of 2012 came from President Barack Obama. Before the Election results were even confirmed, Obama tweeted “4 more years” along with a picture of he and his wife, Michelle, which you can see above, kicking off the celebratory tweets from Obama supports around the world. This tweet was retweeted more than 810,000 times, making it Twitter Golden Tweet of 2012.
This spectacular picture was tweeted by @LaraEakins, chronicling space shuttle Endeavour’s final ride on the back of a modified Boeing 747; a trip taking it through San Francisco Bay, past the UT Tower.

This has to be the most beautiful shot from Twitter last year. It was taken by Japanese mountaineer Nobukazu Kuriki, who live-tweeted his way up Mount Everest. Although @kurikiyama_EN didn’t complete his journey due to extreme winds and frostbite, he did share some beautiful moments through Twitter! Truly breath-taking.
@L2012PoolCam tweeted live images from underneath the water during london 2012 swimming events, making for some stunning shots to share with the world.
@Astro-Suni shared this image of storm Sandy live from the International Space Station as they followed it from their unique vantage point.

IS UNIVERSITY WORTH THE DEBT? As the number of young people applying for places at university fall for the second year running, TSM is asking, is university worth it? Fees have trebled under the coalition Government, yet what students actually receive remains the same – are young people being ripped off? Or worse still, punished for the mistakes of past generations? University is the place where you can open your mind, increase your knowledge, expand your cultural horizons and set yourself up for a successful future. Well, that’s what we’re told, anyway. That may well have been the case in the years following Blair’s famous “Education, Education, Education” speech, but these days with the economy struggling to bounce back from the recent recession, jobs are scarce, even for graduates.
But if it does all come down to cost, there’s support available. You won’t pay your fees It’s for that reason many young people are up front; you won’t pay back a penny until you’re earning at least £21,000; the debt opting to go down the route of won’t affect your credit rating; and there apprenticeships, or just getting a job as soon as they leave school. Getting a job or are grants and bursaries available to make training, earning money and not getting in sure university is open to everybody, no to masses of debt in the process does seem matter what your background. like a great option. You won’t gain the life experiences which only university can equip education, go to university; if you think there’s a more appealing route for you, you with; you probably won’t continue to follow that path. learn and expand your mind; and you will reduce your chances of unlocking your Your future is in your hands. potential of getting a high-earning job.
UNIVERSITY ISN’T THE ONLY OPTION
Back in 1997, Tony Blair and New Labour wanted to see more young people (at least 50%) go to university. You’ll remember his “education, education, education” speech; it put education at the front of people’s minds, and indeed, more people went to university. Schools all over the UK adopted the same ideology, encouraging young people to go to university. I remember when I was at school, university seemed to be the only focus. Other career routes were barely discussed; in fact, I think I only had 2 5minute careers meetings throughout high school! To me, that seems wrong. I believe university isn’t a right, but a privilege. Not everybody is cut out for university and not everybody needs to go; it doesn’t even guarantee a job! There are so many other routes for young people to explore, enabling them to gain experience, earn money and get started with their careers. You could go straight into the world of work by getting a job; apprenticeships are available so you can learn while you work; you could volunteer to gain experience and make a difference; you could even start your own business!
GUEST BLOG BY ADAM JONES
In 2012, 54,000 fewer people started university courses than in 2011 – that’s a 6.6% drop in England alone! So, are we seeing the start of a new trend which will see fewer people pursuing further education? I certainly hope we are. With tuition fees soaring, a degree can end up costing in excess of £30,000 and I, like most other young people, have been questioning if university is really worth it.
Now don’t get me wrong, university isn’t bad, it can be a great experience; I just think there are better options out there. For some people wishing to pursue certain careers, they have to go to university, but for others, there’s really no need. So let’s move away from the belief that every young person should go to university and instead open their minds to alternative routes. Let’s change the focusses of schools so they equip young people with real life skills, enabling them to stand out and succeed, rather than just churning out individuals whose only honed qualities are academic. 33
FRESH FOR 2013
It’s 2013, so aside form wishing you a Happy New Year, we thought we’d give you a heads up on who to look out for on the music scene this year! First up is Chichester’s Tom Odell. Now when you think of artists who have taken the classical piano and elegantly brought it into popular mainstream music, you’ll think of the likes of Elton John, but Odell is quickly proving himself to be the latest to do so. Song From Another Love, Tom’s new EP, beautifully showcases his strikingly powerful vocals and lyrics. 2013 is sure to be a big year for Tom, who amazingly signed a record deal after just four gigs! Next is The 1975 – a fab new band hailing from Manchester. They’ve been making their mark in recent months, so you’re probably already familiar with The 1975’s single ‘Sex’. It’s one of those tracks you just have to sing along to, and one which will be on their latest album, on which they’ve worked with producer Mike Crossey, who’s worked with the likes of Jake Bugg (another rapidly rising star) and Arctic Monkeys.

ADELE WINS WITH SKYFALL
In her first red carpet appearance since giving birth to her son, Tottenhamborn Adele has won the Golden Globes award for Best Original Song, with the theme tune for James Bond Skyfall. “Oh my God. We’ve literally come for a night out, I was not expecting this,” said Adele in her acceptance speech. “It’s very strange to be here and thank you so much for letting me be part of your world for a night.” The singer – whose musical inspirations usually stem from heartbreak – also said Daniel Craig “really turned the vibe around” and will “be my Bond forever.”

SHOP LOCAL. EAT LOCAL. SPEND LOCAL. ENJOY LOCAL. It takes you to start a trend
LET’S SHOP LOCAL In recent years, many of our high street stores have been forced to close due to the rise of online shopping and supermarkets, the latter of which now seem to occupy huge spaces at the hearts of our town centres. These are trends we want to see reversed. High streets were once at the centre of communities around the nation. They weren’t just a shopping destination – they were places to socialise, where events could be held. Each town had one, and each one was different.
from anywhere in the world, but there’s something missing – the experience of shopping. You don’t discover anything new, you don’t speak to people, and you don’t even handle your own money! The good news is that it doesn’t have to be that way. By making the simple choice to shop locally, all of that can change.
Pop to the local farm shop or farmers’ market and you’ll see fresh food which changes with the seasons, grown just a stone’s throw away. Talk to the staff and the growers, whose passion Today, with supermarkets for what they do will be dominating once-bustling town centres, towns haven’t infectious. And the changes you’ll see won’t just be in just lost their identities, they’ve lost their hearts. You quality and atmosphere, it’ll can visit the supermarket in be in price. your home town or one a Pay a visit to local artisan hundred miles away, and they would be the same; the producers and you’ll discover little gems you same food in January as in didn’t even know existed; August, little or no locally produced food, interaction with other shoppers and staff who lack handmade goodies, traditional craft beers and so passion in their work. But it much more. Artisan goods isn’t their fault – may well be a little more supermarkets provide expensive than what you nothing to get excited normally pick up at the about. supermarket, but they’re much better quality and Online shopping has even they celebrate what is local. less character than that of supermarkets, but is growing You also won’t be dropping tasteless, unhealthy ready at an astonishing rate meals and ‘treats’ into your nevertheless. Admittedly, basket that you don’t need, shopping online can be so you could still make a incredibly convenient, you can get almost any product saving by shopping local!
That leads nicely on to another benefit: shopping locally might actually help you to eat more healthily. The main reasons people say stops them making healthy meals are cost and time. But through shopping locally, you can pick up healthy ingredients very cheaply and make a delicious meal in half-an-hour! You might also discover exciting, unfamiliar foods, expanding the choice of meals you could create. And the good news doesn’t stop there! With less goods being transported from the other side of the world and less packaging being used, there’s far less damage to the environment. Also, more of the money spent with local businesses tends to be reinvested locally, while much of that spent with supermarkets ends up elsewhere. So, shopping locally doesn’t just make for a better experience, but is also better for you and your family, your local economy and the environment. True, the shopping might take a bit longer, but it’s time you’ll enjoy spending and an experience you won’t forget. So this weekend, don’t go to the supermarket or order your shopping online, make the decision to shop local.

GROWING UP POOR
ARTICLE BY ADAM JONES
opportunity of education as youngsters, and you’d be right, and most of us make the most of it, setting us up well for opportunities down the road, but some aren’t able to do that, whether it be because of family breakdowns or just a complete lack of parental guidance.
GROWING UP POOR FOLLOWS THE LIVES OF THREE YOUNG PEOPLE TRYING TO ESCAPE POVERTY IN BROKEN BRITAIN.
Last summer, while most people in the country were celebrating the London Olympics, 1 in 5 teenagers up and down the country were facing the struggles of life without work, and BBC Three’s new series, Growing up Poor, opens viewers’ eyes to what else was happening in Britain during the Games. This is the side of life that many of us hear about, yet aren’t all that familiar with. While I was watching the fascinating show, I was checking people’s views on Twitter, and while most people were very sympathetic, some weren’t interested in finding out about the problems faced by unemployed young people, instantly branding them “doll dossers,” “scroungers” and “chavs”; they simply assumed these people were in their situations by choice.
It’s views like that which need to be eradicated. The young people featured on the show are among 300,000 teens around the country in similar situations, and it isn’t their fault. They’ve found themselves in terrible circumstances after not having the fortune of being brought up in the same ways most of us have enjoyed.
That’s not to say these young people aren’t ambitious though, because they are, they have dreams just as the rest of us do. They don’t want to rely on government support, but they have to. Shelby, one of the young women on the show, had taken up a six month work placement stacking shelves at a local shop. She was working 30 hours a week for just £55 – that’s the same amount she’d have received on benefits, but she chose to work in the hope it would lead to a fulltime job. She told how she believed having a baby would entitle her to more money (and it does, as we saw with another of the girls), but, with her head screwed on, she recognised she wasn’t in a position to raise a child; “Can you imagine having a house and baby? There’s no way I could do that right now.”
So it’s the fault of their parents? Absolutely not! The parents of these young individuals found themselves in very similar situations to their children when they were young, and that has to be down to failures of our Governments, not forwarding work opportunities to young people and not even giving them enough money to get by on. You might say that we are Sadly, after working 30 hours all guaranteed the per week for six months,
Shelby wasn’t offered a full-time job. That’s disgraceful, and if the only opportunity the Government can allow young people is a scheme that takes advantage of desperate youngsters, they need to rethink. Fast! Actually, after not getting a job, Shelby now finds herself expecting a baby. She’s fallen into a life which she admitted she wasn’t ready for, presumably because that’s the only way she can get enough money to get by on. It really is appalling that in a civilised society we can let people live like this,
failures, as though they’re not working through choice, as though they don’t want a better life for themselves – they do, they just need a helping hand, but that isn’t As I said, the situations these what the Government is young people have fallen in offering them. to aren’t completely down Our welfare system is to them, they’re down to supposed to support people decades of governments which have allowed such a who are unable to support culture to develop; a culture themselves and to help them in securing a better with few meaningful opportunities and even few- future, but all our current er ways of escaping a life of system secures is poverty for struggles. Messi does it again! It’s been a year of highs and lows in football, but for Messi mainly highs especially aDer winning his fourth consecu7ve Ballon d’Or for being the best footballer in the world. He beat the likes of Cris7ano Ronaldo and Andres Iniesta while scoring an incredible 91 goals in a calendar year while only playing 69 games for both club and country. He managed to break a number of records such as scoring the most number of goals in a single Champions league game. He truly is the best player in the world and it begs the ques7on will anyone ever be able to surpass Messis achievements. Also, does this make Messi the best player of all 7me surpassing the likes of Pele, Zidane and Maradona? Only 7me will tell but at the moment it is
Messi who is the best player in the world! La Liga dominates the world’s best! The Fifa world team of the year consisted of players from La LigaIker Casillas (Real Madrid) Dani Alves (Barcelona) Gerard Pique (Barcelona) Sergio Ramos (Real Madrid) Marcelo (Real Madrid) Andres Iniesta (Barcelona) Xabi Alonso (Real Madrid) Xavi (Barcelona) Cris7ano Ronaldo (Real Madrid) Radamel Falcao (Atle7co Madrid) Lionel Messi (Barcelona)
The prem-
ier league is supposedly the best league in the world but not a single player was able to make the squad. There are a number of debateable decisions for example is Casillas really the best keeper in the world? with the likes of Buffon and Neuer having fantas7c seasons surely they are beLer than Casillas. The most controversial decision was probably the defence with Marcelo at leD back overshadowing Ashley Cole who has had a terrific year with Chelsea to help guide them to liD the Champions league trophy. Then there is Alves at right back, he’s surely not the best player in the world not when there is Lahm who is a top class player and recently played for Germany in the Euros. In midfield it would be hard to replace Iniesta and Xavi but Alonso is debateable. Finally, up front Messi and Ronaldo there is no one beLer, but Falcao could be replaced with Van Persie aDer having a fantas7c season with Arsenal then moving to Manchester United. So, it is hard to understand how no one from the premier league has made the squad or players from the Bundesliga and Serie A. Nevertheless, it is a fantas7c team but does this mean that the premier league needs to up its game, is this just a one off or is it a sign of what is to come?
SNOOKER CAN LEARN FROM DARTS SAYS
JUDD TRUMP
After seeing the PDC World Championship, destroying the traditional format of the Judd Trump believes snooker would adopt gentleman’s sport? That’s something for some of the razzmatazz seen in the world of Barry Hearn to debate. darts. “The atmosphere and the crowds were really good. It was a bit rowdy for me but I think they need to certainly liven it up, especially between frames,” said Trump, famous for his so-called ‘naughty snooker’. “The crowds should be allowed to chant perhaps, or get some music playing.” But not everyone in snooker is as enthusiastic as Trump – John Higgins for one. “At the darts there is maybe only a small percentage that are there to really watch the darts, and the rest of them are there to enjoy themselves,” said Higgins. When Barry Hearn came into snooker, he realised changes needed to be made in order for the game to be as successful as his previous efforts, which included darts. Hearn introduced walk-on music for the players as well as bringing new forms of the game, such as Power Snooker, to fans, getting the crowd more involved.
