So, you passed the A-Levels, aced the entrance interview, dashed round the shops to pick up all the stuďŹ&#x20AC; you could ever need, hugged Mum and Dad, said goodbye to your hamster and now... Youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re here. In halls. With these guys...

Just like that weird smell in your new mattress, The SPG is always here for you! And just like that weird smell in your “new” mattress, The SPG is going to guide you through the nightmare world of rst year atmates!

Everyone’s broke. Everyone has to eat. However, The Food-Pincher has their heart set on YOUR food in particular. It will start with something little. Some milk for their morning cuppa. A bit of spread for some toast. And before you know it they are treating your cupboard like their own personal buﬀet. HOW TO HANDLE: First of all, don’t label your food like you are proud of it. It makes you look like a muppet and The Food-Pincher will just get an added thrill from stealing your precious calories. Also, don’t stoop to their level, or the whole university will break down into a state of anarchy, and before you know it you will all be wearing black leather like Mad Max. Instead, keep anything non-perishable like crisps, biscuits and sweets in your room, safely tucked under your bed.

SIR-MESS-A-LOT Everyone at uni lets themselves get a little bit sloppy, it’s practically a requirement of student life! But this guy just abuses the privilege. Early signs include plates from several days ago. Then plates from several weeks ago. Then plates which have developed and are plotting to overthrow their human masters. HOW TO HANDLE: Subtle hints are not going to work here. If they can’t spot a huge pile of lthy plates in the sink, they are not going to spot a post-it-note saying “Ummm, can we all make sure we are doing our washing up please? THANK YOU.” No, drastic times call for drastic measures. To handle Sir-Mess-A-Lot, you need to THINK like Sir-Mess-A-Lot! Don’t throw away that little bit of tea! Leave it in the cup to go mouldy, grow a friend and then gang up on him together! You can each battle your mouldy creations like Pokemon! Trust me; it will be a laugh and a half!

POST-IT-NOTE-PAT Post-it-Note-Pat. Post-it-Note-Pat. Post-it-Note-Pat and his black and white REFUSAL TO SEE WHY THE WASHING UP HASN’T BEEN DONE I AM NOT YOUR MOTHER CAN YOU PLEASE DO THE WASHING UP THANK YOU. The polar opposite of Sir-Mess-A-Lot, Post-it-Note-Pat communicates exclusively through passive aggressive notes stating things that have not been performed up to their own impeccable standards. Post-itNote-Pat is the type of person who in later life will send a mass email to the rest of the oﬃce asking that people return their mug straight away “And there will be no negative repercussions”, only to nd out that the MD has drawn a moustache on it. HOW TO HANDLE: Post-it-Note-Pat thrives on anonymity and moral superiority. Get down to the shops and buy a bottle of their cheapest and nastiest wine. Knock on their door with the post-it note in hand looking genuinely puzzled. Ask them to explain what they mean by this while swigging directly from the bottle. While they are explaining for the fth time what they mean by “washing up” break down into huge sobs that you have failed them. That you wish you could be more like them and have your act together! Ask if you can come into their room to try on their clothes “just to see what it would be like...” They will slam the door on you and never speak to you again. Or call the campus security. Either way, problem solved.

THE PARTY ANIMAL The Party Animal is great! For Fresher’s week. But when everyone else has taken off the fancy dress and started to crack on with getting some work done, like the Duracell Bunny, The Party Animal just aint slowin’ down. The rst time you don’t want to go out because you have lectures rst thing in the morning, they’ll call you boring and ounce off in a huff never to speak to you again. Just accept it when you hear them screaming the lyrics to Bad Romance by Lady Gaga at 3am while twelve of their extremely drunk friend’s burn smiley faces into your bread with a cigarette.

HOW TO HANDLE: You really do have your work cut out with this one. However, there is always a way. Chances are, The Party Animal will be doing something artsy like Drama, English Literature or Interpretive Dance. They will almost deenitely be in a band or have some kind of creative output. Ask them to play/perform their latest masterpiece for you. When they have nished, applaud loudly with tears in your eyes. Tell them they are wasted here and that Paris needs them! Or just leave them to self destruct and get chucked oﬀ their course by Xmas. Your call.

Case Study Illustration Graduate’s Business Gets A Boost, After Winning 2014 Brain Child Competition. Albert Clegg Norwich University of the Arts BA Illustration 2011-2014 2014 Brain Child Winner Bean Clothing Founder

Firstly, congratulations on winning the 2014 Brain Child Competition. You must be very happy about this fantastic achievement! Thank you sir. Yeah it’s a great thing to have happened and has given Bean the best possible beginning as a start up indie company. How did you hear about the competition? I heard about the competition through my university. I also knew a few winners from the previous year, so I was well aware of it. What did you win? I won a load of stuff! From website building to legal advice. The competition is very much focused on mentoring and a load of local businesses get involved to aid the development of the winner’s brand. Unfortunately the £1000 prize money had been withdrawn for 2014, which was a bit sucky, haha, but I’m extremely happy with what I got. You’ve just finished a BA Illustration Degree. How would you summarise

your experience from university? University has been great. Norwich is a brilliant place to be a creative, it’s got a real arty buzz to the place. But yeah my development over the past three years has been unprecedented. The tutors, city and friends have all been great and have made me into a far more accomplished artist slash businessman. What kind of support were you given whilst at university? Oooh loads of stuff. NUA has a great tutor/student relationship, and generally if you need help with anything there will be someone to lend a hand. I think the main thing to realise with getting help at uni is that you have to ask for it - if you’re motivated and passionate, people will want to help! Was going to uni something you always aimed towards? Yes. I come from a pretty academic background and wanted to study medicine until I was about 15 or 16. Then I decided that medicine wasn’t for me and I didn’t want to go down the family route. Instead, I decided to follow my other passion for art. This led me to studying illustration and the rest is history. >>

So, you’ve now graduated and have set-up your own company Bean Clothing. Can you tell us a little bit more about your business please… Bean Clothing has been running for about 9 months now and is a Fair Trade limited edition screen-printing company that produces fresh tasty garments with original art. The company is going through a transition period at the moment. Myself, along with a few new additions to the team, are re-branding the company to the ‘Bean Creative’ using the competition winnings. This is going to take the company to that next level of finesse and quality. The Bean Creative is really the epitome of what I wanted to achieve. We will be acting as a platform for some new tangents to the brand as well as expanding our product list. We’re getting involved and showcasing the best of street art, street sports, music, current affairs and artwork.

Will you always sell your clothes independently or are you trying to get your clothing into retail outlets? The plan is to get them into retailers. We’re just waiting for the re-brand to be finished and for the quality to be there before we approach any. But yeah hopefully by around Christmas time we’ll be in stores so watch out! Are you actively looking for other artists to get involved with Bean Clothing? We’ve always got our eyes open! We want the Bean Creative to be a platform to showcase up and coming artists, so if you’re an artist get in contact and if we like what you do you’ll get featured! Let’s talk about your style as an artist, where does it come from? Who/what are your influences? Um lots of things influence me. I would say generally my main influences are politics, religion, semiotics and current affairs. My style is something I have been developing heavily since the conception of Bean. I was quite erratic during my university career and made very different work from term to term. I’m now focusing my efforts into developing my own unique visual language, which is getting there. But generally I like drawing geometric shapes and characters in a unique way, as I’m sure you can tell from my work. How long have you been drawing for? All my life I guess, I ‘ve always enjoyed it. I would say that I really got passionate when I was in secondary school. My teachers would let me and friends draw in the lessons we found boring because it meant that we wouldn’t disrupt the class. But yeah that’s where the catalyst came from; drawing with friends whilst we were supposed to be learning Español. As an aspiring new business person/professional artist what are your main goals? To succeed…? Generally I would just like to be successful in whatever >>

I’m aspiring to do. A bit of a wishy-washy borderline arrogant answer that I’m sure everybody would give, but it’s honest. Please finish this sentence: This time next year… I’ll be driving through India in a Hindustan, sourcing ethical clothes from people I’m friends with. One of the founding ideas of Bean is to source our own clothing to create an honest, sincere closed system of production based on proportional representation, where we have a relationship with our manufacturers, kinda like a co-operative. This pretty much means we aim to get every individual within the production of our products paid a wage that represents what they have put into the company. Really it’s capitalism in its truest and most honest form; but this is getting a bit in depth and I’m sure people don’t wanna read a rant by me, slating modern business structures and the way the west treats the developing world! First things first, every superhero needs at least one super power. Take for instance Wheel Clamp Man, a real life superhero from Perth, Australia. Although not strictly a law abiding hero, there are many Perth citizens who find his particular skill quite invaluable. The clue is all in the name. Wheel Clamp Man dresses in a tight green leotard and helps motorists avoid a $135 fine by removing wheel clamps with an angle grinder. Although we are not condoning this daredevil’s vigilante antics, we definitely commend his originality. Why not think of some unique power you could have? How about extreme sandwich making? The ability to find a squirrel’s lost nuts? Or, best of all, the power to read your own mind? Now that is super!

DESIGN YOUR COSTUME

Unlike Bruce Wayne, not everyone has the money to spend on a high-tech, slick looking costume. Professional MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) fighter (Benjamin Jones) turned real life superhero (Phoenix Jones) actually managed to make a costume out of a bullet proof vest and armour plating. However, this kind of superhero apparel will still be out of many people’s price range. Not to worry, it’s very easy to improvise with clothes and items found around the house. We have already touched on the very popular spandex; this is a great place to start if you’re struggling with ideas. Keep in mind, the police might think you’re just any old vigilante if you start running around clobbering criminals in your normal biking gear. So, choose a striking colour, you want people to know you’re a superhero. Underwear on the outside of your costume is of course optional.

ACCESSORISE Now you have the base of your costume, it’s time to accessorise. Find an old Halloween mask, and then update it so it can be used as part of your costume. Can’t find a mask? Grab yourself an old t-shirt and cut yourself off a strip of fabric, make two eyeholes and then tie it around your head, the Zorro look never goes out of fashion. A gadget belt is a must. Think of a logo or letter for your character, cut it out of cardboard, cover it in foil (for that genuine metal look) and then attach it to the front of a belt. A spatula is perfect for quickly serving up bad guys, plungers are ideal for a quick vertical getaway and old CDs make a great substitute for ninja throwing stars!

Pick a Superhero Name

This is all about being inventive, the quirkier the better. Your superhero name needs to reflect your power, costume or the story behind your character. For example, if you choose to don a particularly fetching Lycra full-body suit, why not call yourself the Supreme Spandex Bandit? If you have the ability to turn yourself into an armchair at any given time, how about The Unexpected Upholstery Man?

Keep your Identity Secret If you’re regularly fighting criminals, it is of the highest importance you keep your identity a secret. You hardly want your arch nemesis turning up at your university or place of work and demanding a duel with plasma cannons. Plain clothes are a must in your day to day life (a pair of glasses are non-compulsory). Of course if your superhero power is more focussed on helping old ladies cross the road or saving cats from trees, you can be a little more relaxed about your secret identity. Now you’ve had the superhero 101, it’s time to get out there and start doing good deeds in your neighbourhood. If you do start getting noticed by the press and end up in your local newspaper, don’t lap up the glory. Being a real superhero is about helping others, not enjoying the celebrity status…

Stephen Manderson, better known as Professor Green, has left a hectic 18 months behind him and is back with a new album which follows on from 2011’s “AtYour Inconvenience”. It is the next step in a career that has seen him amass over two million record sales in the UK alone. We caught up with Professor Green to talk about what it’s like growing up in public, anti-social media and Nandos!

Hi Stephen! What are you up to? Ahh, loads of interviews, back on the promo trail now I’ve got some music to talk about so lots of talking. Well let’s get talking then! Your new single Lullaby was officially launched in September. What has the reaction been like? It has been incredible you know, it really has and it seems to connect with people. People really appreciate the meaning of it. Lullaby is a song about depression but it’s not a depressing song, it’s about the result of depression and the most important lines of the song are “things always change as long as you give them a chance”. The sad thing is when people don’t give things a chance to change, look at Robin Williams, or my Dad, they make a choice to end things before they have a chance to change, which is sad. The track features Tori Kelly and you’re no stranger to collaborations, who would be your dream artist to collaborate with or have you worked with them? I really don’t know, I’ve enjoyed

working with so many people, Emeli (Sandé) is incredible. We’ve done five songs together so far, that’s definitely a working relationship that works very well. I’ve enjoyed working with so many people; it’s more about meeting cool people and the collaborations and music happening organically. The last time we spoke to you was back in 2011, which is quite a while ago now! You said then that you would like to work with Adele. Is that something in the pipeline? Erm, nah not at the moment. I mean we talk, she knows my first name. She’s really good friends with Kid Harpoon who I did a lot on this album with but nothing is set in stone as of yet. The title of your new album is “Growing Up In Public”. You’ve certainly done a lot of that, one part of it was that you took a step back from Twitter - is this a sign of Pro Green getting old? No definitely not! It’s just part of Pro Green getting a bit wiser, which I guess does happen with age, it’s not something you are born with. Some people do seem to be born wiser than others however. It’s just a case

of I’m still going to be the same Pro Green on Twitter. I’m just going to be more choosy with what I post. So when I do post something that I want people to read, it won’t be amongst a whole heap of mundane Tweets about when I last used the toilet or fed my dog. Social media is so big now, it is a great way to interact with everyone but does it feel like you have two million people following you around in your pocket all day? It’s not even that, it’s just that I don’t think it’s good for anyone to have access to that many people, it’s a lot of responsibility to be honest. The thing is, in normal day-to-day life for the most part you have some control over who you bump into depending on your environment. On Twitter, you don’t have that control, people who you would never usually concern yourself with can spend all day talking about how much they hate you and saying horrible stuff that you don’t really need to bother with. Also, what I found with social media, was that a lot of people were doing what I did, just posting a lot of pointless stuff because they were bored. It’s just information that you don’t need

in your head. There are really valid reasons for social media and I think when used properly it’s brilliant. It can almost become anti-social media at a point; people spend so long on their phones they forget to live in the real world. I hope we don’t end up with a generation of socially inept children, the art of conversation is important. So, can you tell us a bit more about your new album? Well, yeah, but I think one of the best things about music is just sitting down and listening to an album and working out what it means to you. I hate when people tell you what every song is about, it is important to let people decide for themselves. That is one of the best things about music. It is definitely an upbeat album; Lullaby is the only ballad on there. When I was doing “Growing Up In Public” I really wanted to make an album that I could really sink my teeth into live, that I could perform from the first to the last track on tour and everyone loving it. The second album was almost like the introspective and serious one; “Growing Up In Public” is more fun and a lot more upbeat.

You have come a long way since your days growing up in Hackney, has anything changed when it comes to what has inspired your music now? Nah, it really is the same stuff. It’s just life that inspires me and that is what’s good about all the good and bad stuff that has happened over the last 18 months. It has given me a whole heap of stuff to put on the album. You are touring from November onwards; do you have any rituals before you go on stage? Yes, I always have a shot with the band and then I take a bottle of Jack Daniels on stage and usually finish it before the end of the show, which is quite a worry! Haha, does that mean you get nervous or excited? Erm, you know what, I used to get nervous and I’m pretty sure it’s still the same feeling, you just interpret it differently. Now the nerves feel more like excitement. What about when you play new m ate r i a l on tour,

do you get nervous or excited for that? Kind of indifferent, I’m just intrigued. You want to see what the reaction is. Also it takes a while to learn how to perform songs to the crowds.

to have a good time. When you are supporting a band like The Stone Roses with fans that already have an opinion of you, which is definitely something to overcome and to be proud of when you do.

Who do you consider to be your most important musical influences? I listen to so much music you know, from Nirvana to Biggie to Bonobo to Fink. So many different artists and they all play a part in the music I make. There is a lot of musical influence in what I do; the variation of my influences definitely separates me from other artists.

We’ve got a little light-hearted question for you now. You are very lucky to have a Black Nando’s card, what is your favourite thing to order? It depends on if I’m being sensible with what I eat or not, if I am, I will get a quarter chicken and ratatouille always extra hot. If I’m not being sensible then I’ll get half chicken, peri peri chips, coleslaw and corn.

What has been the highlight of your career so far? There have been loads! Getting a number one with Emelie Sandé for “Read All About It” was incredible. The albums and singles being a success are always a highlight. Also performing on Jools Holland and The X Factor. Supporting The Stone Roses, which was the hardest gig I’ve ever had but I won the crowd over. There were 75,000 people basically jeering more than they were cheering when I came out on stage and managing to win them over was a proud moment. It’s easy to perform to your own crowd, people have paid money to see you which generally means they are going

We’re doing a competition for the tour actually, I don’t do VIP tickets, I think it’s a bit of a liberty charging people to meet you so I’m doing a competition instead. The winners will get to watch the sound check for the tour in the afternoon and then come to Nando’s for lunch with me. Do you have any future plans we should know about? I’m just going to be getting into the next album as quickly as possible after this one. the presenters, and spoke to the producers, asking practically every question under the sun! Luckily none of them got bored of me, and some of them gave me some wicked advice. WHEN I LEFT HEART I REALLY WANTED TO TRY MY HAND AT PRESENTING MY OWN RADIO SHOW. I started volunteering five afternoons a week for a community radio station. I did a variety of different shows whilst I was there, the highlight being the Breakfast Show, which I loved, despite waking up at 4am to get the tube and a night bus there.

I LATER HEARD THAT CAPITAL XTRA WAS LOOKING FOR A FEMALE PRESENTER. I was so excited when the station manager asked me to record a demo. I remember I had to stay up for two days until 4am to get it done. I kept re-recording it again and again, trying to make it as perfect as possible. One link took me more than 15 takes to get right. I sent the demo off, and all that hard work was worth it when the station manager called me to tell me I’d got the job and would be covering for DJ Abrantee over Christmas! I’ll never forget doing my first link there, I was petrified. The red ‘on air’ light illuminated the studio as I lifted the microphone up, my heart was pumping so fast. After the first show I couldn’t wait to do it all over again the following night – I’d had so much fun.

EIGHT MONTHS LATER I WAS OFFERED THE AFTERNOON SHOW (12PM-4PM) WHICH WAS A MASSIVE STEP. I had always wanted to do daytime radio, and it meant no more early starts - woohoo! After roughly a year, another big change came, I was asked if I’d like to join Capital! I had listened to Capital all my life and couldn’t believe it. I immediately said “yes” and asked “when do I start?” For around nine months I was on air 3am until 6am, and also covered anytime daytime slots when I was needed. ALMOST A YEAR AGO I STARTED PRESENTING THE CAPITAL MIDMORNING SHOW FROM 10AM-1PM. It’s incredible and has opened so many doors. I get to work a lot with the Breakfast Show which is amazing, and I’ve

had so many exciting and crazy experiences. I’ve run the London Marathon. I’ve presented on stage at Wembley Stadium for Capital’s Summertime Ball, where there were over 80,000 people watching me from the crowd, (scary!). I’m also lucky enough to be a regular on Capital TV, and have interviewed massive stars like Miley Cyrus, Usher, Enrique and many more. I still find it hard to believe that this is my job. I can genuinely say that I still get excited when I wake up for

London soul songstress and BRIT award winner, Ella Eyre’s rapid rise continues. Since proving herself to be one of the UK’s most enthralling and captivating debut female singers, Ella has been wowing the crowds throughout the UK having sold out one headline tour and about to embark on her second. We caught up with Ella to talk about her rise to fame, future collaborations and America! Interview by Ben Farrin

Hi Ella, your Twitter states that you’re currently in a field!? Yes, I’m currently in the middle of a field, on the Bestival site. I’m doing a party tonight called Pilton Party, which is run by Michael Eavis who runs Glastonbury. It’s a thank you to all the locals for putting up with Glastonbury this year. Who else is playing? Just me, Foals and Fast Decline. It’s been a crazy summer for you, what’s been your highlight? It’s been an incredible summer, we’ve done so many festivals, it’s been awesome! I think our favourite festival out of them all, was probably Pukkelpop in Belgium. Mainly because I’ve never played a proper big show out in Belgium and the crowd turnout was absolutely amazing. The atmosphere was so cool, and also being in a country like Belgium was so fun.

How does playing to a crowd at a festival compare to playing to people in a small intimate venue? They’re very different; everyone is there for different reasons. Because there are so many acts on one bill, everybody’s got their favourites and so a lot of the time you’re playing to people that don’t know your stuff or who you are. If anything, it makes it slightly more interesting because you’ve got to convert them, convince them that you’re worth listening to. Even if people don’t like my music I like them to have fun and enjoy it. Which of your own tracks do you prefer playing live? Hmm, one of my favourite tracks is actually my new single ‘Comeback’, mainly because people like to get involved. It’s a fun song for angry people, about an angry situation and I think a lot of people can relate to it. It goes down really well. Can you tell us the story behind it…? Ha yeah, the story to ‘Comeback’ is about being taken advantage of by somebody that you care about, and then eventually you’re angry about the whole situation but it’s almost like saying “F*ck it, it doesn’t matter because they’ll come back anyway”. I wrote the song when I was 16, it happened quite a while ago and it’s about an ex boyfriend. I think >> >>

the statement is so true regardless of who it’s about. I knew plenty of people when I was that age who had been cheated on and mistreated. I wrote that song as a motivational song to motivate people to realise that they’re better than the situation they are in. It’s very admirable because you’ve turned a negative situation into an energetic, up-tempo sound. Let’s talk about the video… For me, it’s like watching a short movie that makes you want to dance, I love it! Jon Jon Augustivo directed it - How much input did you have in the video? I had quite a lot of input really because Jon Jon originally sent a different script, and I really liked him as a Director, but I wasn’t convinced about the script. We had a conversation over the phone and we spoke about various references and ideas. I knew that with this one, I wanted to have an actual story line. I wanted people to actually relate to what I was saying. My first video ‘If I Go’ was slightly more artistically driven rather than commentated, if you know what I mean? With ‘Comeback’, I knew that I wanted it to be an angry situation, and that I wanted there to be a revenge plot, but also in a sort of innocent way. Everybody has these angry moments, and the whole idea of ‘Comeback’ is that it’s imagining what I would

do if I had the chance. So I don’t actually end up smashing up his house and blowing up his car, it’s all going on in my head and I think a lot of people have those moments where they wish there was something they could do to make them feel the pain that they are feeling. I’m just representing what every girl would feel. I’m guessing that the video cost quite a lot to produce, because there are quite a lot of props that get smashed, torn and burnt! Hahaha, it was a lot of fun! The funny thing for me was when we got to the house and they said “you can smash everything but the chandelier”. I was like “Everything…?” And they said “yeah” I was like “Can I cut up the sofa?” They were like “yeah”, I said “can I smash the TV?” they were like “yeah”, I was like “OH MY GOD”! It was amazing! I don’t want to change the subject too much, but can you ever see yourself getting into acting? Because for me, that really did seem like a short movie! Hahaha, well when I went to the Brit School, I studied Musical Theatre so I trained in acting, but I never thought I was actually that good at it. I’m passionate about the film and about the situation, so therefore it’s actually quite an easy situation to act out because I’ve been through it.

Whilst we’re on the subject of films, what’s your favourite? ‘Catch Me If You Can’ and ‘Wolf of Wall Street’ with Leo Dicaprio. So, you’ve got your second UK headlining tour kicking off next month, how does that feel, you must be really pumped up? Oh I’m so pumped up, it’s quite surreal to think that I’m on my second tour and I haven’t really released my album yet! I did the first tour when I released my first single, and for that to sell out was quite surreal, incredibly flattering and so much fun. Does the fame side of things add any pressure and if so, how are you dealing with it? I don’t know whether it’s adding any pressure or not, I think because it’s happening quite gradually

for me, I’m able to get used to it. I think it’s important to surround yourself with grounded and encouraging people. If you surround yourself with the right people, it’s quite difficult to lose yourself really. My mum’s particularly on my case about most things, she still tells me off for swearing every now and again bless her. It’s quite weird because I don’t consider myself famous at all and I find it quite strange, but also incredibly flattering when someone recognises me. I definitely think you’re famous! You’ve got a fair few views on your videos… Millions and millions! Hahaha. How quickly has this all happened for you? Not that quickly. By the time my album is released it will’ve been in the making for three years. It’s

taken its time and I’ve learnt a lot about myself as an artist. I started when I was 15 or 16, and I’m 20 now, so it’s taken a while. I think I’ve had moments of impatience in wanting to release and wanting to get the ball rolling, but I think I’ve had to learn as I go along, that it’s not about how long it takes, it’s about the quality of what you’re doing. I think back to all the times that I’ve been impatient, and wanted to chop things, then and there and I just think how unprepared I was at the time. And I certainly feel that I am getting closer to that point now. What tips would you give to anybody that wants to get into the music industry? It’s all about networking! And not even with people that can get you ahead, just people that can help. Like,

when I was at the Brit School I was really good friends with a guy called James and he’s now my lighting designer on tour. And my drummer went to the school as well. It’s all about who you know and not necessarily people that can get ahead and give you a record deal, but even people that can just help you in a development sense as well. Is America on the cards for you? Absolutely! I’m actually going on tour with Bastille in November – I’m supporting them on their North American tour which should be absolutely amazing. I love those guys, they’ve supported me from a really early stage and it’s such a pleasure to be able to join them on their American tour. >> >>

I was trying to work out what the scenario was with America, because the video to ‘Comeback’ was shot there… Yeah, I’ve been out there and I’ve met my American label and we’re all really excited. I can’t wait to get the ball rolling over there to be honest, hopefully it will go down well, I LOVE AMERICA and I love travelling. I went to Australia with Rudimental for the Future Music Festival and I can’t wait to go over there as myself with my band. What about collaborations… Are there any in the pipeline? I’ve been doing a bit of work with DJ Fresh in the studio. I also did a bit of writing for Sigma, I wrote the latest Paloma Faith track that they have out at the moment called ‘Changing’. It’s been awesome to collaborate on projects that aren’t necessarily my own. I’ve done a bit of work with Rudimental for their next album as well so… you’ll see.

Who inspires you musically? One of my main inspirations was Basement Jaxx from when I was a kid. It was the first album I ever bought and like nothing I had ever heard before. I was a big fan of S Club 7 and all that, but when I finally listened to Basement Jaxx, I was like “sick”, they’re just so creative and innovative. People like that inspired me because they’re not afraid to push the boundaries. Can you tell us a secret about yourself? I have a phobia of balloons. It’s the rubber ones, they’re f*cking scary! What is your ultimate goal in life and as an artist? Never let it end I guess. In any respect, even when I stop being an artist, I wanna keep writing, I love it, it helps me and I enjoy it. I wanna be in a position to be able to do what I do for a very, very, very long time.

Ok, you’ve done it. You survived the first year of university education. You have battled fresher’s flu, fire alarms at 3am and that creepy guy in a black trench coat who collects animal skulls. But it’s done. You’re finally ready to move out of student halls and into your very own, brand-new student house! There will be BBQ’s! House parties! You might even get to see your hot new housemate naked! But life in student digs isn’t all BBQ’s and naked housemates. There may be trouble ahead, but fortunately like a kleptomaniac chiropractor, The SPG has your back!

1) TAKE PHOTOS. NO, SERIOUSLY, TAKE LIKE, A MILLION PHOTOS. Make sure you take photos of your new house BEFORE you move all your stuff in. Chances are you are going to be moving into a fairly well-loved house which has been “enjoyed” by a range of students before you. Trying to persuade your landlord that the ceiling has always been that colour won’t be a fun or easy task. Taking photos of any existing damage, marks or wear and tear on the place will mean that getting your deposit back is a LOT easier. Make a game out of it by running round the place like paparazzi “Wonky lamp! Wonky lamp! Are you still having a sexy affair with the suspicious stain on the carpet!” click click click...

2) GET AN INVENTORY. An inventory is not just a list of all the useless stuff you have acquired playing RPGs. It is a list of all the stuff in your house when you move in. Insist on being given a full, comprehensive inventory by your landlord on moving in. Most student houses come complete with a mixture of hodge-podge tat from various generations of students that have left their junk there. So your landlord might not mind if you accidently drop a Saved By The Bell mug from the mid 90’s. However, if he/she finds that the television has gone walkabouts or you lost the lawnmower in the shed on a drunken bet, they won’t be so pleased. A full inventory also makes it quite a bit harder for a landlord to claim you lost a priceless ming vase.

3) STUDENTS DON’T PAY COUNCIL TAX. From your university, you should be able to obtain an exemption certificate that basically says “Everyone in this house is a student. We don’t pay council tax. Deal.” Once you have this magical piece of paper, MAKE SURE YOU LET THE COUNCIL KNOW! City Councils tend to be fairly bureaucratic places, so make life easier on both of you by letting them know who is living in the property.

4) BILLS ARE BORING. BUT HAVING YOUR ELECTRICITY CUT OFF IS EVEN WORSE. Before you move in, ask your landlord who the current providers are for your electricity, water, gas etc. Call them up or write to them to let them know when you moved into the property ASAP. That way, you won’t get the massive bill a previous occupant ran up from leaving the heating on for “Jungle Week” last summer. Also, please throw away the stained Tarzan outfit he left.

5) TV LICENCES. IF YOU WATCH LIVE TV, YOU HAVE TO PAY IT. First off all, let’s clear up a few myths: 1) Your parent’s TV licence doesn’t cover your student house. 2) It doesn’t matter if your are watching it online, you still have to pay. 3) TV licences only count for LIVE TV. So iPlayer, 4OD, Youtube etc are all fine without a licence. 4) If you just use your TV with a games console, then you don’t need to pay. 5) TV Licence enforcement people are like vampires. They can’t come into your house unless you invite them. They are not the police, and unless they have a warrant you are fully within your rights to close the door. Student houses are often a little bit lax in paying their TV licence. Consequently, they tend to be the frequent target of mail-outs, leaflets and people knocking on the door. If you are sent a snotty letter along the lines of “WE KNOW YOU HAVE A TELLY! GIVE US YOUR MONEY OR ELSE!” call them up and politely explain that you do not watch live TV and that you do not take kindly to threatening letters.

6) DO THE WASHING UP ONCE IN A WHILE. IT WON’T KILL YOU! Seriously, do the flipping washing up! Things go a lot easier if you do a little bit every day, instead of trying to wash up 9 million green and furry bowls which have sprouted legs and formed their own techno-punk fusion band. You will try to have a chore rota. It will fail miserably. You’ll agree that everyone will just tidy up as they go along. They won’t. By the end of the year you will be eating off of paper plates and serving baked beans from a fedora. I’m afraid that like those dodgy kebab menus it just kind of comes with the territory of being a student. >>

It is my job to provide reassurance and advice to students and staff about all things, and as a result together with the team at Brighton University, we have compiled some tips and advice on how to “Beat the Burglar”...... The aim of this article is to provide you the student with practical and useful ways to protect your home and your property, whilst giving useful tips about a range of other things, which hopefully you will keep and use as your “Student Survival Guide”.....

Crime levels are falling but statistics show that one in three students will be a victim of a crime whilst studying at college or university, not a great statistic but we can change that and it all starts now!

4. No visible intruder alarm Why? No fear of the public being alerted.

6. Valuables on display - Why? Easy to see what’s on offer and easy to grab for a quick getaway.

• Most burglaries are opportunistic, rather than planned. • Burglars usually choose houses that have little or no visible security. • If your home does not look secure, seems unlived in, or provides unobserved access, it could be at risk.

5. No security lighting - Why? Kept hidden in the shadows.

7. Open or unsecured windows Why? Access is quick and easy with no noise. You wouldn’t leave your car door open would you? 9. Unlocked sheds - Why? Ease of access normally to bikes etc and if that’s open, what else is?

Understanding what burglars look for when choosing their target will 10. Paved path or driveway help you identify weak spots in Why? Can move freely without your home’s security. making a sound.

What makes your home attractive to burglars? 1. High fences, trees or bushes at the front of the property - Why? It gives a potential thief a hiding place to break in hidden from view. 2. Low fences, trees or bushes at the rear of the property - Why? Easy access to your property. 3. Wheelie bins accessible - Why? Used to climb on and access those hard to reach ledges and windows.

Help yourself • Get contents insurance. • Lock your doors and windows. • Mark your possessions with UV pen (name and student number). • Keep a map of the area, know your way around and keep safe. • Get a personal alarm. • Use a bank, not your mattress! • Photograph your valuables. • Make a note of family/friends to call in an emergency - it might be your phone that’s stolen. • Leave a light on when you go out.

• Know where you’re going, arrange to go with mates, know you can get back and avoid short cuts. • Take your personal alarm and have it to hand when walking back, do not use a short cut, be aware of your surroundings. • Take a cheap phone and wallet/ purse with only what you need with you, it’s less attractive to a potential thief. • Lock up windows, doors and hide all valuables from sight. • Make sure someone always knows where you’re going.

• Keep your bags zipped up, if it’s grabbed don’t fight back. • Avoid using a cash machine whilst you’re drunk or in dark corners. • Only use a mobile if you really need to, out of sight, out of mind. • Walk confidently and don’t act drunk, even if you are. • Always stay with friends. • If something happens... REPORT IT • Drinks get spiked with alcohol and drugs. Be drink aware when out - it only takes fifteen minutes for a spiked drink to kick in and blokes it can happen to you too!

BODYWEIGHT EXERCISES Scott Laidler is one of the world’s leading personal trainers and nutritional experts. Here are his top 5 body exercises to help you keep in shape - There’s no equipment necessary so no excuses.

REVERSE LUNGES HOW: • Stand up straight, hands on hips. • Lunge one leg backwards, resting on your toes for support. • Slowly bend the leg down towards the oor. Lowering your body until your leg is at a 90 degree angle. • Hold the position for 2-3 seconds, then slowly return to the starting position. • Repeat 12-15 times each leg. This is one set. • Do 3 sets of 12-15 reps on each leg.

WHAT MUSCLES DOES IT WORK?

This mainly works your quadriceps but it will also work your glutes, hamstrings, adductors and your gastrocnemius in your calves.

PLANK HOW: • Kneel on a mat. • Bring your arms forward so you are resting on your forearms. Then bring both of your legs back so you are suspended in the air by your forearms and resting on your toes. • Remember to keep your body completely straight and to contract your abdominals. • Do 3 sets, holding each plank for 40 seconds.

WHAT MUSCLES DOES IT WORK?

This exercise will work your core muscles, especially the rectus abdominis and your transverse abdominis.

PRESS-UPS HOW: • Kneel on a mat and bring your arms forward and out to the side (slightly more than shoulder width apart) so your hands are supporting your upper body. • Bring both of your legs back so you are now suspended in the air by your hands and resting on your toes. • Slowly lower your body down towards to the oor. Make sure that your back is straight and the strength is coming from your arms and chest. • When you are as low as you can go without touching the oor, pause for 2-3 seconds. Return to the start position and repeat. • Do 3 sets of 15 press-ups.

WHAT MUSCLES DOES IT WORK?

Chest (pectoralis major), deltoids, triceps brachii, serratus anterior, abdominals and your coracrobrachiallis in your arms.

BURPE HOW: • Stand up straight. Lower your body down into a squat position and place your hands on the oor in front of you (slightly wider than shoulder width). • Kick back both of your feet into the push up position (suspended on your toes) and drop your chest immediately down towards the oor (not touching). Pause for 1-2 seconds. • Return to the start position by repeating the sequence in reverse. (I.e. (I. Push your body back up by bowing your chest and returning back to the squat position; and then to standing position with a little jump at the end). • Perform the movement as quickly as possible. Repeat. • Do 3 sets of 12-15 reps.

WHAT MUSCLES DOES IT WORK?

This exercise works lots of muscles; especially your quadriceps, glutes, hamstrings, back, abdominals, chest, shoulders, biceps and triceps. It’s great for full-body conditioning.

T-STABALISATION HOW: • Using a mat, get into the press-up position. • Raise one arm up and over the body. Rotate your torso until the other side of your body is facing the oor. (You should be facing sideways). • Fully extend your raised arm above your body. (You should form a sideways T shape). • Hold for 2-3 seconds. Return to the neutral position. • Repeat on the other side. This is 1 rep. • Do 3 sets of 10 reps.

WHAT MUSCLES DOES IT WORK? Abdominals, shoulders, glutes, obliques and your triceps.

Wearing a five-day-old tee-shirt or a Kermit the Frog Onesie because all of your other clothes are dirty is part of being a student. Never again will you not be judged for going to a supermarket at 2pm in your pyjamas. Well, maybe a little....

....But whether it’s for a first date, society Xmas party or the dreaded job interview, being able to smarten yourself up a bit will make you look a million times better. So your old friend The SPG has put together some top tips to make you go hobo-chic to super smooth smart casual sex machine in five minutes flat.

The easiest way to instantly look fancier than you actually are is to put on a collared shirt. It’s like an instant cheat code to go from casual to smart casual. With shirts, go for something dark or with stripes. This will hide the fact that you haven’t ironed it. Shirts look best when ironed obviously, but if you actually bother to iron your clothes at university, then please look at yourself in the mirror and check that you haven’t accidently changed into your mum. To avoid having to do the ironing, try any of the following: 1) Hang the shirt in the bathroom and go for a REALLY steamy shower. To avoid the crippling hot water bill, try to do this at a friend’s house. Preferably while they are away. 2) After washing, place on a radiator to let the creases fall out. 3) Stick it under your mattress for a few days and hope the student accommodation mattress smells don’t rub oﬀ on it. Spray the living daylights out of it with Febreze. 4) Sp 5) Cry until your mum/housemate does it. Or get a non-iron shirt. Those things are the shiz.

2) Learn how a tie works.

Ties are what grown-ups wear to stop their heads from falling oﬀ. They are also a great way to look classy, IF done properly. Otherwise you just look like a muppet. www.tie-a-tie.net has some great ww advice on... trying to tie a tie. What did you expect? For those of you who don’t know how, don’t worry, we’ll wait for you. The rest of you, feel free to read ahead.

1) Cheap and nasty ties look cheap and nasty. Save the polyester ties for minimum wage fast-food jobs. You can pick up a decent silk tie pol from any charity shop for less than the price of a half-pint (see below). 2) Novelty ties are for your dad. A tie with “LOVE MACHINE” on it isn’t fooling anyone. 3) In general, a tie should be a darker colour than your shirt. For black shirts, go with a bright, contrasting colour. 4) Never mix spots and stripes, unless you want to look like a 90’s game show host.

3) Charity shops are awesome. Go to them.

Especially if you live near a posh area, charity shops are full of little gems waiting to be found by the savvy student shopper. Cheap silk ties are plentiful, and you can pick up a suit jacket for a song. Not literally of course. ple You will have to give them some money. In general, you will look smarter in an older but better quality suit than in a shoddy brand new one. You might need to venture into a couple of them to nd one in your exact size, but trust

me it will be worth all the dirty looks the old ladies behind the counter give you when you get the right kind of dirty looks when you go out clubbing looking like a sex panther. One word of caution though. The fashions in charity shops are based on “what tat people have given us” rather than any sense of what’s “in”. So think about everything twice unless you want to go out clubbing looking like a space-age Victorian music hall performer. Actually, that sounds awesome. Do that.

4) Shave.

You will look and feel younger and sexier after a good shave. If you have a beard, keep it trimmed. Cool hipster style beards are ne; looking like George R.R Martin is not.

5) Go easy on the cologne.

You are trying to look good, not choke everyone to death. A few squirts are ne. You do not need to spray yourself all over like a 13 year old who has just discovered Lynx.

6) Shoes. Wear them.

Right, we are on the home stretch! You have your shirt, a nice tie and a swinging suit jacket that only smells a little. You’ve shaved and had ONE OR TWO squirts of Eau De Handsome-Pants and you’re ready to go out... only to put on the same grubby trainers that this morning you used to stamp to death the mould that grew out of that pizza behind the sofa. Shoes are worth spending money on. At the risk of sounding like your granny, if you buy cheap you buy twice.

Whatever you wear, make it your own choice and style. Screw what other people think, wear and do what makes you happy. Even if it is a Kermit the Frog Onesie.

I learnt a long time ago that I couldn’t do everything myself and needed to get great people in to delegate responsibility to. It is this delegation that allows me to dedicate 80% of my time to Virgin Unite.

Lastly you must have the courage to take risks. We learn more from our mistakes than we do from our successes. Success is a lousy teacher.

Are you a workaholic, or do you manage to clock off? I work hard play hard. Having a good work-life balance is incredibly important and at Virgin we are embracing flexible working. Recently we have abolished holiday caps at Virgin Management and if an employee would like to work from home one day for personal reasons they should be allowed to as long as they get their work done. I’ve never really worked from an office.

Any advice to students reading this interview thinking of starting a business? Get out there and do it. Starting your own business is a lot of hard work so make sure you are passionate whatever that business is trying to achieve or address. This way you will stick with it through the tough times and improve the odds of it becoming a success. I’ve read that you have over 400 companies under the Virgin Group brand. What kind of input do you have nowadays, considering the vast size of the organisations? Today we actually have more like 60 operational businesses and over 400 legal entities. It is still a lot and I try to stay on top of all of the companies but fortunately I have a fantastic team of leaders running the businesses’ day to day operations.

What has been the most valuable lesson you’ve learnt in business? Delegation and the importance of getting the right people for the job…you can’t do everything yourself. Can you tell us a funny story about yourself? Last year I paid the price for a Grand Prix bet I had lost with Tony Fernandez in 2011. At that time both Tony and I had an airline business as well as a Formula One team. We bet that whoever’s Formula One team did better than the others, the loser would have to dress up and work >>

as an air stewardess on the victor’s airline. In the end I lost the bet and had to dress up as an Air Asia stewardess and serve drinks on a six hour flight for charity. The best prank you’ve ever played? The best prank would have to be the ‘BA can’t get it up’ PR stunt in 1999. I was woken at 5.30 am and told that British Airways were having technical issues erecting the London Eye so

we flew a blimp over the eye which read “BA CAN’T GET IT UP”. What’s next for Sir Richard Branson? For the time being I’m focusing on Galactic. It’s a milestone driven business and we won’t launch until it is safe to do so…we want to offer return tickets! The business is looking positive and we have had some fantastic results taking us closer and closer to launch.

Student Cycling Tips

As a student, bikes are a great way to get around. They’re cheap, they don’t need petrol and you can always nd a parking space. And you’ll get so buﬀ you won’t even need to join a gym! (Maybe). But this magical world of two wheeled freedom can also be dangerous and is fraught with peril for the unwary. Which is why your mates at The SPG are here with some top student cycling tips to keep you peddling away...

1) MAKE SURE YOUR BIKE FITS YOU You wouldn’t just grab a random shirt from a shop and expect it to t. It needs to be the right size, and the same goes for bikes. You will need to be comfortable when cycling. It will make your bike more eﬃcient and save the aches and pains on your legs. Most bikes come with adjustable saddles and other bits and bobs. If you are buying a bike from a shop, the staﬀ should be more than happy to help you get one that ts your height and leg measurements. If not, then take your money elsewhere. obviously don’t want it. They o If buying a bike second hand, ask to ride it up and down the road to make sure it is the right t for you. E Bicylces do a handy guide online to help you gure out what size frame you need.

2) BE YOUR OWN MECHANIC You can save masses of time, money and hassle by learning to x the odd problem that all bikes encounter yourself. Although it can be intimidating at rst, being able to do things like replace your bike chain, innate the tires and adjust the seat yourself is both empowering and convenient. Especially if you break down in the middle of no-where late at night.

Speak to other mates who have bikes and if you smile at them nicely, they might even lend you their tools. If you don’t have any friends, or they are all muppets, YouTube has tons of practical video guides to help.

3) DON’T DRINK AND RIDE It’s an urban myth that you can get as drunk as you like and still cycle home. Firstly, you are still on the road. A road which has cars on. You know, the big metal things going at 30 MPH less than an arm’s length away from you? Wobbling about when you’re walking is OK, but wobbling into a car or onto the pavement really isn’t.

Also, from a legal point of view, it’s against the law to ride on a road while under the innuence of alcohol or drugs, to the extent that you can’t control the bike properly. It is also an oﬀence to be drunk in charge of a bike, so technically even pushing your bike along the pavement could have the police onto you.

4) HELMETS ARE LIKE CONDOMS They look funny, a lot of people think they don’t look cool but they can save your life. Also, you should only use them once! Make sure you get a brand-new one. Reason being is that they are designed to absorb and take the impact of any crash or bump. They destruct under the pressure, like the crash panels on cars, instead of spreading the impact to your head. The helmet might look ne, and the bloke selling it might say it is, but it’s just not worth the risk. The Bicycle Helmet Safety Institute (yes, apparently that is a thing...) recommends you should change your helmet under the following circumstances: Did you crash it? Replace. Did you drop it hard enough to crack the foam? Replace. Is it from the 1970's? Replace. h Is the outside just foam or clot instead of plastic? Replace. Does it lack a CPSC, ASTM or Snell sticker inside? Replace. Can you not adjust it to t correctly? Replace!

We all know money is tight, but a helmet really is worth spending the money on. Think of it as an investment in keeping your university educated super-brain well looked after!

5) LOCK IT OR LOSE IT You wouldn’t leave your car unlocked while you popped into the shops for 10 mins, so why do it with a bike? Do yourself a favour and get a decent bike lock. It’s not the sexiest thing to spend money on, but it will make the diﬀerence between riding around without a care in the world and walking down the street wearing a helmet with people looking at you like you have just come from the world’s worst fancy dress party. Pound shops are normally great for bargains, but you will be shocked at how easily a cheap lock can be broken with the minimum of eﬀort. A thin wire can be cut, plastic mechanisms can be smashed. This isn’t trying to scare you into making your bike into Fort Knox, but with a little research you can get a lock that will let you leave your bike safe and sound. A metal D-ring loop is best as it’s harder to cut through. Bike thieves make a split second decision about which one to nick, based on which one will be easiest to grab quickly and be away with. Make sure you get a heavy looking one that says “DON’T EVEN THINK ABOUT IT SUNSHINE!” To any wannabe thieves.

6) REGISTER YOUR BIKE www.bikeregister.com oﬀer a great, police approved service which helps to A) make your bike less likely to be stolen and B) much more likely to be re-united with you if it does. Like micro-chipping an adorable puppy! Bike Register explains how it works and for under £11 there is a unique tamper resistant QR code to give you peace of mind. If buying second hand, it’s also worth checking out their database to make sure any bike you have your eye on hasn’t been stolen. They oﬀer a FREE service too!

You’re a student. You’re broke. You’re hungry. And your mum is probably 900 miles away turning your old room into a penguin sanctuary. But never fear, because The SPG is here to help. Here are our top five tips to avoid every student’s nightmare - eating food out of the bins behind the local corner shop. The first thing to remember of course is that.... 1) YOU ARE NOT YOUR MUM Chances are your parents enjoy a significantly better standard of living at the moment than you do as a student. They probably have a car instead of a bus pass and might own their own home instead of sharing digs with a creepy guy who dresses in black and burns holes in your bread with a cigarette.

Consequently, when you first go shopping for yourself it might be tempting to get all the brands and products that you know and love. After all, that’s what mum buys. Chances are, mum was buying not just for herself, but for the rest of the family as well. You can’t afford to think like that. Remember, you are buying for yourself and on your

own budget. There will be plenty of time for family sized jars of organic pesto hand rolled on the thighs of Peruvian albino snow leopards when you have made your millions. Until then, stick to the supermarket cheapo stuff, which reminds me....

of chopped up fried onions can make any crappy sauce taste better. Put in a teaspoon of mixed herbs and it’s almost as good as the stuff Lloyd Grossman flogs to horny middle aged housewives.

But although you can get a few bargains if you know where to look, beware of brand name products. You can get a packet of Jammy Dodgers for only a quid! FANTASTIC! But you can get supermarket own brand ones for around 30p if you can get to a big supermarket. 4) GO TO A BIG SUPERMARKET There will be a shop on campus, it will be expensive. There will be a local small shop. It will be expensive. There will be a lovely local shop selling organic, fair

trade hummus staffed by a really good looking girl with pink hair and some strangely attractive piercings. It will be expensive. If you want to buy things for a reasonable price, you need to get into town and you need to go to the big supermarket. Get on the bus. The price of a bus ticket will probably be a lot less than how much you will save if you do a big shop. If the bus doesn’t go there, then herd some mates together and split the cost of a taxi. Go on a Sunday night or Tuesday afternoon when all of the good reduced stuff is on the shelves. But one last tip, and if you don’t listen to any of my other rubbish unsolicited advice, please, please, PLEASE listen to this: 5) FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, DON'T GO SHOPPING WHEN YOU'RE HUNGRY!

It’s probably a layover from our past as a hunter-gatherer society - when you’re hungry, go get some food. But when your stomach is empty, so is your brain. Going shopping when you’re hungry is the equivalent of getting blind drunk at the School Dayz Disco Nite in town after a messy break up. You’re not thinking clearly, you’re not as picky about what you put in your body and in the morning you will regret it bitterly and will cry into your pillow wondering what the hell that rash is. Make a shopping list and stick to it. Put on a cheap black suit and some sunglasses and pretend to be a doorman. If it’s not on the list, it’s not coming in! (The trolley in this case is a nightclub. The bargains on offer that you pick up in this case are hot girls who are wearing trainers so they get in anyway. And I don’t

know, the bog roll is a drunken investment banker? Not sure where I am going with this to be honest). When making your list, think meals. Make big batches that you can decant into individual portions, stick in the freezer and take out in the morning before lectures. Remember, with a bit of forward planning, you too can live the student dream of NOT having to eat out of a bin. Or at the bare minimum, less often. Brushetta is a great way of using up items from your fridge! You can use a variety of leftover cheese, cooked meats, tomatoes and beans, basically anything goes! Best serve as a light lunch or before a main meal.

Makes 16 slices Prep time: 10 min Cook time: 10 min

1. Preheat the oven to 180°C/350°F. Slice the rolls into 3mm slices. 2. Brush the slices with a little olive oil, and place them on a baking sheet in a single layer. Sprinkle over some dried herbs. 3. Cook for 10 minutes and whilst they are still hot rub them with the garlic slices. Now nish the brushetta with your chosen topping depending on your fridge contents; • Tomato and Olive – Chop 175g of tomatoes into small pieces or cut cherry tomatoes into quarters. Add a handful of pitted black olives, a few capers and add 2 tbsp virgin olive oil and ripped basil leaves. Divide the mixture between each brushetta toast and season with black pepper. • Broccoli and Mint – In a food processor add 150g cooked broccoli. Blitz for a few seconds then add 25g pinenuts, 55g grated Parmesan and 3 tbsp olive oil. Blitz for a further 10 seconds. Stir in 2 tbsp chopped mint and season with black pepper and a squeeze of lemon juice. Divide between each brushetta. • Sweet Cheese Melt – Grate or crumble any leftover cheese that you have from your fridge. Divide between each brushetta and add a teaspoon of cranberry sauce, place under a hot grill for 2-3 minutes or until it just starts to melt. • Turkey, Brie and Cranberry - Cut 150g brie into small slices, divide amongst the brushetta and top with 100g sliced cooked turkey and a little cranberry sauce. • Beef and Caramelised Onion - Heat a little oil in a thick based pan, add 300g sliced red onions and cover and cook over a low heat until soft and tender. Add 1/2 tbsp brown sugar and 1/2 tbsp vinegar, cook, stirring until caramelised. Slice cooked beef thinly, spread mustard on the brushetta, and top with some chopped parsley, beef and caramelised onions.

HOW TO COOK A SUNDAY ROAST

LIKE A BOSS for less than 2 quid a head!

The Sunday roast. The holy grail of grown-up cooking. Expensive, difficult to cook and only achievable by middle aged women named Doris and your Nan. Until now. The SPG has pulled out all the stops to put together the ultimate guide to the cheap and easy student roast dinner.

1) You are NOT your mum Unless your mum is a broke student, you will not be able to make a roast just like her on your first go. Things can go wrong, roll with it, laugh about it, and learn from it. If worst comes to worst, order pizza.

2) Plan in advance It’s hard to cook a roast on the spur of the moment. Organise this around a week in advance. It will give people time to clear their Sunday afternoons.

3) Get people to bring their own booze Seriously, it’s just easier this way.

4) Get someone else to do the washing up Do you think Gordon Ramsey does his own scrubbing? Screw that. Wait ‘til people are full of dinner and enter into a food-based coma and then ask them to do it. They will hopefully be stupid enough to say yes.

The night before Peel the potatoes and cut them up into roast potato sized chunks. Stick them in a big bowl and cover with cold water. Peel the carrots and chop them into slices and stick into a separate bowl of cold water. You can try sticks, which look fancier but they are a hassle, so just stick with slices for now. Call someone else and ask them to bring the pudding. Damn, I always forget about the pudding.

The big day! This plan assumes people start to eat at 1.30. If you stick to the plan, it should be OK. If not, then just improvise. It’ll be fine!

Stick the oven on 400°F/200°C. Get the chicken; make sure it doesn’t have any guts or anything inside it. Stick a lemon up its bottom if you have it, and pop some bacon rashers on top if you’ve got any. If you want to, cut an onion into quarters and pop it in the roasting tin with it. Yes, I suppose the bacon, onion and lemon butt-plug should have been mentioned in the shopping list, but whatever. What are you going to do? Sue me? I’d like to see you try! (NOTE: Please don’t sue me). Pop the chicken in the oven. Put a generous amount of oil in on one of the baking trays and stick it in the oven to heat up.

Carefully put the potatoes onto the baking tray with the oil on it. Make sure you do this on a steady surface. Brush/spoon the oil over them to make sure they get lovely and crispy all over and then pop them in the oven.

Turn over the potatoes. Again, this is boiling oil, please be careful.

Take the chicken out of the oven and put it on a CLEAN chopping board. Stick a pan of water on the boil. The juices in the chicken should run clear when pierced with a knife. If not, cook for longer.

Stick the frozen peas in a microwaveable bowl. Use about a large handful per person along with a tablespoon of water. Stick the timer on for ten minutes. Pop the carrots in the pan of boiling water.

(This is the hard part) - Boil some water in the kettle and make the gravy according to the packet. Add the water a little bit at a time to get rid of lumps. Stir with a whisk, or a fork will do. If you can be hassled, pour the meat juices into the gravy for a professional touch. Carve the chicken: Stick a fork in the breast part and then cut off slices. While this is happening, encourage people to help themselves to stuff (specifically to stick the Yorkshire puddings in the oven - might as well use the whole packet). Just shove them on a baking tray and keep an eye on them. (This is a REALLY busy five minutes). Drain the carrots with the colander.

Ask other people to put all the stuff on the table. Enlist the help of various guests and housemates to make this happen. Get things out the oven. Generally flap around.

watch us play and sometimes they don’t want to hear new songs. We played them for the first time at Reading and Leeds and it was the first time people had a chance to hear more than just the singles. It was just a great experience to play these songs, which we had spent so long working on, with people singing the words back at you. I suppose that took some of the nerves of releasing our album away, because we knew that people liked what we were doing. You have been busy doing the festivals this summer, how do you find time to write new material? This summer we just decided not to write anything new. We are trying to embrace the excitement of the album just coming

out and enjoy the moment. In the last few years when writing new material, it’s just finding the time to write, especially when we’re away touring. Sam McTrusty (vocals), spent a lot of time writing and working on lyrics on the tour bus after we had played a gig. I know Sam found it really hard to get rid of the adrenaline after we’d played a show, so he ended up spending a lot of time writing. Also when those initial ideas were there for new songs, we would play around during our sound checks. It’s not easy doing it on the road, it’s a lot easier to spend a week in the studio and write music. Do you feel pressure when you are in the studio that you have to have new material

by the end of it? Rather than casually playing around with ideas on the tour bus? Erm, you know it’s different. Luckily - and I’m going to touch wood here so I don’t bring on the meltdown of the band - we usually have too many ideas. I suppose that has been the issue with our band up until this album. We had so many ideas and we tried to cram all the ideas into the one song. This is the first time we have managed to simplify it. I definitely think when you are in the studio, it can be a little harder when the pressure is actually on, but we all work better like that. Last summer we spent some time in Wales recording and it was amazing, we had a great experience and recorded most of our album there.

You were working with the producer Gil Norton in Wales, what did you learn from him when you were recording? We recorded with him in L.A. a few years ago too and it went really well, so we recorded half this album with Gil again, that was a pretty mad experience. We’ve never worked with anyone of Gil’s calibre before (that’s no disrespect for any one we have worked with previously). Gil has produced records that we were all fans of anyway when we were growing up. I think what we learnt from him is - it seems very basic but when not to play. Not everyone needs to do something all the time and we learnt how important dynamics and space are. Apart from anything else, we learnt how >>

to be a proper band from him, he had all these stories from the past and we focused a lot more, because we knew that the person we were dealing with had worked with all these amazing bands. We also worked with the producer Jacknife Lee on the other half of the record, we would say Jacknife is more ‘new school’ whereas Gil is quite ‘old school’ so we got a good mix of styles on the album. We have got to ask about the album artwork, what is the meaning behind the flags? We basically got a bit obsessed with the idea of propaganda and having a military feel to things. We thought it might be quite interesting to create our own flag and logo as if we were an entity

ourselves. I know, it sounds very up our own arse but bear with me… Go on... So then we rolled with that idea and thought why not try to represent each of the four of us, not in a literal way, but the idea of four separate things, four people in the band, coming together on the cover almost like the end of a journey. There’s kind of a concept behind it, but more than anything else we wanted something clean and striking and what we felt was a cool, fun, representation of us on the artwork. Then we thought why not get the fans involved and they can design their own flags too! You also got your fans involved for your ‘Brothers and Sisters’ video, they had to send in photos with their siblings. Did

you get some funny pictures? There were loads of funny photos and there were a few where we were questioning whether we could actually put them in the video. We did it thinking that if we only get 100 pictures that will be alright and we could make something, but it totally relies on people taking the time to send photos in. Then we got thousands of photos and we managed to get so many in the actual video. We thought it was a cool, interactive and fun thing for people to do. You are with the independent record label Red Bull; do you feel like you have more freedom being with an independent? We’ve never been signed to a major label so I don’t know what

‘the other side’ is like. I’ve got friends that have had a great experience with a major label and I’ve got friends that have had a terrible experience. Then on the other hand I’ve had friends that have been signed to an indie label that have had a rubbish experience. It is always a bit of a battle because ultimately a label is designed to sell music and a lot of the time a band just wants to make music. We are lucky, we have an awful lot of freedom. Musically, we’ve been allowed to do pretty much whatever we want to do. Have you had your defining moment where you’re like ‘yeah, we’re pretty big’? We’ve tried not to think about it, I think because if we start thinking

like that, we’re all worried that it will feel like it’s over. There have been a few moments over the summer though. It’s really hard to explain but I’m going to try, it’s like a few years ago we were in America playing shows and we drove past the Gran Canyon. We stopped and got out and just looked at it and took pictures and things. You know the Gran Canyon is impressive and amazing, but you can’t really get your head round it. It’s not until much later on when you look back at pictures and it sets in how much of an amazing thing it is. In our own really tiny little way playing to 20,000 people in a tent is like that. In your head

you know it’s unbelievable and amazing but you don’t really know it at the time, it’s probably a few weeks or months later where you think “wow, that was amazing!” What is next for Twin Atlantic? We’re going on tour in the UK in October; we’ve got about 10 or 12 dates. Then we go to Europe and back to America. Wow that sounds brilliant! Thanks so much for chatting with us! How did you celebrate? Haven’t really yet but whenever I’m with my family members we always sit for hours and talk about how crazy everything is! You are releasing the single here in the UK in October. Why did you choose to release the single in the UK later? My label wanted to give it the best chance to succeed so I let them take the lead.

Can you tell us a secret about yourself? I am terrified of the dark. Soca (a style of Caribbean music) is your favourite genre of music. What is it about this

You have a debut album coming out, what can we expect from it? A lot of fun, very relatable songs that don’t sound like a lot of songs you hear on the radio. In the late 1800s a process was invented called Vulcanisation. This gave shoe developers the opportunity to blend fabric with rubber, making it possible to create the earliest forms of trainers. Rubber companies specialising in bike tires were the first to mass-produce trainers, which were originally called Keds. Due to the lightweight and comfortability of the shoes, trainers were eventually named Sneakers. The Converse Shoe Co. was the first to realise the sport benefits of the Sneaker when they created Converse All Stars, a trainer which radically changed the game of basketball. Fast forward to the 1970s when trainers became an essential piece of footwear and were being used by footballers, runners and other athletes. Then came the 1980s, a decade which turned the trainer into much

more than just a sports shoe. People started choosing them as their everyday footwear and celebrities started to be pictured wearing them regularly. The hip-hop scene embraced sneaker culture massively, with artists such as Run-DMC wearing the classic shell-toe Addidas trainers with no laces and artists such as The Ghetto Boys writing songs like ‘Read These Nikes’. Likewise, trainers were just as popular in basketball as they’d ever been. The first signature Michael Jordan shoe was released in 1985, one of the most popular trainers of all time. Apparently for every game in which Jordan wore the shoes he was fined $5000 due to the strict uniform rules of the NBA. Jordan continued to wear them however and this rebellious attitude made the trainer even more favored with fans. Over recent years celebrities have taken sneaker wearing to whole new extravagant levels. Psy, the South-Korean artist famed for hit single ‘Gangnam Style’, was recently seen wearing Christian Louboutin Roller-Boat trainers worth nearly £800. Outkast’s Antwan ‘Big Boi’ Patton also bought a pair of diamond encrusted custom Nikes worth over £30,000! Trainers have also been used to make strong statements in classic cult movies. Take for instance the yellow Onitsuka Tiger Tai Chi trainers worn by Uma Thurman’s character in ‘Kill Bill’, the same design which was worn by Bruce Lee in his film ‘Game of Death’. Whether it be high-tops, slip-ons or skate trainers you like, it’s worth remembering the culture that has surrounded them through the years. If you like a classic pair of Converse, remember, they were a revolutionary shoe for basketball. If you’re a girl and are into high-tops, just think, they were originally developed in the 80s for aerobics. It’s always important to look back before you look forward when it comes to your style and trainer culture is no exception to this rule...

Adrenaline pumping, heart thumping, white knuckle rides; some of us love them, some of us hate them. If these exhilarating attractions are far from your idea of fun then you should probably stick to the teacups. However, if roller coasters are the entire reason you spend your bank holidays waiting in queues then look no further, here is a guide to some of the UK's most extreme...

STEALTH Thorpe Park

Coined as the fastest roller coaster in the UK, Stealth is an adrenaline junky's dream. When the ride was first built in 2006 it could accelerate from 0-80 mph in 2.3 seconds. In 2007 the attraction was upgraded to decrease the time it took to accelerate to 1.9 seconds. And, as if that wasn't fast enough, the ride was further enhanced in 2009, taking it up to speeds of 90 mph in just 1.8 seconds. This ÂŁ12 million roller coaster is reported to create G-forces of up to 4.7G!

OBLIVION Alton Towers

When it was built in 1998, Oblivion was sold as the world's first vertical roller coaster. This adrenaline inducing attraction pulls riders up a steep incline before hanging them over an 88.8 degree drop. The carriage is then plunged into darkness at speeds of up to 68 mph, making it the third fastest roller coaster in the U.K. Definitely not a ride for those with a delicate stomach.

BIG ONE Blackpool Pleasure Beach

Its highest point reaching 213 foot, the Big One is the tallest roller coaster in the UK. The ride also held the record for the tallest and fastest rollercoaster for 8 years, until Silver Star opened at Europa Park in Germany (2002).

SAW

Thorpe Park Based on the movie of the same name, Saw is a horror themed roller coaster at Thorpe Park. Billy, the creepy tricycle riding figurine from the film gives a speech at the beginning of the ride telling passengers, â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;hereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s what happens when you lose'. Riders are then plummeted around a twisting, looping track at speeds of up to 55 mph. Although not one of the fastest roller coasters in the UK, it is definitely one of the creepiest!

THE SMILER Alton Towers

The Smiler located at Alton Towers holds the Guinness World Record for most loops in a roller coaster, 14 in total. The ride features various optical illusions, flashing lights and near misses designed to make passengers psychologically disorientated. Not one for the faint hearted!
