Greeks dance and swim for sight Ashleigh Johnson Printz Writer On Wednesday night, a group of about 900 Greeks gathered in Bennett Auditorium to show off their dance moves, all while raising money and awareness for Delta Gamma’s foundation, Service for Sight.

The event, dubbed King Neptune, is part of the sorority’s annual Anchor Splash week, which consists of profit share nights, a dance competition and a synchronized swimming and dance competition, scheduled for tonight in the Payne Center Natatorium.

“I always enjoy dancing on stage for such a good cause,” said Steven Panepinto, a member of Pi Kappa Phi, the fraternity who took home the crown and won the overall dance off. “It’s definitely something I look forward to every year.”

At the competition, Pi Kappa Alpha came in second and Sigma Phi Epsilon was third.

“So many organizations put so much enthusiasm and time into Anchor Splash every year, and it means a lot to us that so many people get excited for our philanthropy event,” said Anchor Splash director Alanna Buckley.

Panepinto said he and his group have been practicing for a few weeks on their dance.

“The guys worked for countless hours in order to perfect the routine,” he said.

Throughout the week, the members of Delta Gamma have been spending their time raising awareness for their foundation as well as money. Since Monday, a booth has been set up in the Thad Cochran Center, with pictures of eyes from all Greek organizations. Participants voted for their favorite eyes by dropping coins into jars. The members of Delta Gamma also visited local businesses to find sponsors and community members willing to donate for their cause. In addition to money, they

also collect Campbell soup labels, Box Tops for Education and eyeglasses that can be donated to those in need.

Buckley said the money from Anchor Splash the past two years has gone to Gallant Hearts Guide Dog Center in Madison, Miss., a non-profit organization that trains seeing-eye dogs.

Last year, Delta Gamma raised $15,000. This year, Buckley has hopes of exceeding that.

“Delta Gamma is very unique because our foundation was founded by one of our own,” said assistant director of Anchor Splash Morgan Lambert. “Many people don’t realize how common visual

impairments are and how many people are affected by them. As a chapter, we have a passion for our philanthropy and want to raise awareness for our cause.”

Anchor Splash is the final event in Delta Gamma’s philanthropy week. It will kick off tonight with the sororities participating in a synchronized swimming routine and will be followed by various relay races. Both male and female teams participate in the races. Everyone is encouraged to attend.

“It is such a fun event,” said senior Delta Gamma member Caitlin Siedell. “It makes me really proud to be a part of such an amazing chapter.”

‘Dancing at Lughnasa’ to open Friday Chase Ladner Printz Writer The Theatre Department at the University of Southern Mississippi is scheduled to open their first play of the semester this weekend with the Irish drama “Dancing at Lughnasa” by Brian Friel.

The play is directed by Alicia Hanley, a graduate student and the director of “Lysistrata” last semester. Despite having the same director, the plays could not be more different. While “Lysistrata” was a modern take on a Greek comedy, “Dancing with Lughnasa” is a more contemporary character drama originally shown in 1990.

The play is narrated by Michael, who takes the audience through a childhood memory of one summer in 1936 during the Celtic holiday of Lughnasa. While it does play into the story, the holiday is more of a backdrop for telling the story of Michael’s mother and her four sisters living together with their sick brother. The play centers around the family dealing with loss of jobs, getting older and baby daddies showing up out of the blue.

“I find the play very poignant,” said Moriah Whiteman, a firstyear graduate student who

plays the sister Agnes. “It’s very humors being a mundane story of five women working together, but it has a very heightened sense of life.”

While the holiday is not central to the story, the Irish setting is. Themes such as poverty, Catholicism, paganism and heritage add a lot of flavor to the characters. All of it helps

to endear the characters to the audience, and a big part of that characterization is their cadence and accent which the actors portray to the best of their ability with the help of vocal coaches and tapes. While the quality of the accents vary, for the most part they are not particularly distracting by the end of first scene.

“This is one of the first times I’ve really come across a contemporary play where the language is so important,” said Derrick Phillips, a second year graduate student who plays Michael. “It took me awhile to get into the script, but once I noticed how it was written and how different characters have different punctuations add to the characters.”

While this is all set in Michael’s memory, he is not main character, nor is he a very active part of the story. Despite this, the nature of the story has helped inform the design of the play.

“The script itself is a mix of realism and memory,” said Bailey McClure, a second year scenic design graduate student. “What we wanted to do is make the outside area more of that memory and the inside of the house more realistic and more detail to represent the finer memories, the happier things that he remembers.”

While the drama of the family dynamics is a big part of the play, there are many moments of comedy as the characters try to cope with life’s troubles.

“I like this playwright,” said Louis Rackoff, head of the Master of Fine Arts program. “This is a very beautiful and poetic story that is very accessible. It’s a story about a family in love and a story of what keep them together and what pulls them apart.”

The play opens this Friday in the Tatum Theatre of Theatre and Dance Building and will have seven more showings, with the last being on March 2.

Spring music fests to host top headliners Caitlin Seale Printz Writer It’s music festival time again.

With the recent release of the 2013 Bonnaroo lineup, you’re sure to have caught the festival bug and are itching to cram into a crowd singing along to the hits of your favorite artist. While Bonnaroo has a phenomenal lineup this year, boasting the talent of Paul McCartney, Mumford & Sons, Passion Pit, Wilco and Local Natives, the six-hour travel time might be a little too stout for some, but don’t freak out; there are lots of great music opportunities closer to home.

The Mississippi Gulf Coast will host the third annual Gulfport Music Festival May 10 and 11.

This year, the festival’s acts have a combined 75 million records sold, 60 top ten singles and multiple Grammy awards. Friday has a range of genres, from punk (The Offspring) to alternative rock

(Shinedown). Saturday the festival will play host to popular acts such as the Smashing Pumpkins, OneRepublic and Wiz Khalifa.

Local favorites Rosco Bandana will also take the stage at the festival in their hometown.

The increasingly popular Hangout Festival in Gulf Shores, Ala. boasts sand, surf and good music.

This year, the festival will be May 17-19 all right on the sandy shore.

One of the most anticipated artists for this festival is rock band Kings of Leon, as well as Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. The festival will also feature the music of Best Coast, Dirty Projectors, Ellie Goulding, The Shins and Bassnectar.

The two weekends of the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival in April 26 to May 5 have been jam packed with incredible headliners. The festival has a variety of genres represented that will appeal to every music fan of every age. The festival kicks off with John Mayer and Band

of Horses the Friday night of the first weekend. Billy Joel, Dave Mathews Band and B.B. King all appear on the roster for the first weekend. The fun doesn’t stop there, though. The next weekend, Maroon 5, Willie Nelson, Phoenix, Little Big Town, Mutemath, Frank Ocean and The Black Keys will take the stage. Along with the bigger acts, the festival will host many of the local brass bands and local artists that the city is so famous for.

If festivals just aren’t your scene or ticket prices are a little too steep for your pocketbook, make sure to check out local venues around Hattiesburg. The music scene here is definitely worth checking out and always provides a fun night out with friends. In fact, bands such as Local Natives, Moon Taxi and Rosco Bandana that will be taking the stage at these big festivals have actually made stops in some of the bars in Hattiesburg.

Losing faith in faith: Barker to speak Paul White Printz Writer

This Saturday, an evangelical minister of 19 years turned atheist is coming to the University of Southern Mississippi to tell his story.

Dan Barker will be speaking at 3 p.m. in Gonzales Auditorium, Room 108 of the Liberal Arts Building. He will also be available for a question and answer session and a book signing. The event will be hosted by the USM division of the Secular Student Alliance and is free and open to the public.

“Barker is going to be speaking on behalf of what caused him to go from being a devout Christian to a prolific atheist,” said SSA President Melanie Green.

Barker has authored such books as “Losing Faith in Faith” (1992), an autobiographical chronicling of his

personal story of de conversion, and a critical analysis of Christianity and the Bible; “Godless” (2008), an update on his previous book, including a foreword from Richard Dawkins; and “Just Pretend: A Freethought Book for Children” (1988) that compares God and Santa and myth with reality and celebrates atheism and freedom of thought, according to the Freedom From Religion Foundation’s website, of which Barker is the copresident. He has also authored several other books.

FFRF is the leading group fighting for church/state separation, according to Green.

Barker has a long history with the Christian faith. He was a teenage evangelist at age 15. He received a degree in religion from Azusa Pacific University and was ordained to the ministry by the Standard Community Church of California in 1975.

Barker is also a successful Christian musician. For more than two decades he was an accompanist, arranger and record producer for Manuel Bonilla, “the leading Christian singer in the Spanish-speaking world,” according to ffrf.org.

He has also worked with such Christian personalities as Pat Boone, Jimmy Roberts and gospel songwriter Audrey Meier.

Even after renouncing his faith in 1984, Barker is still receiving royalties from his popular children’s Christian musicals “Mary Had a Little Lamb” (1977) and follow-up “His Fleece was White as Snow” (1978), both published by Manna Music and performed all over the world, according to ffrf.org.

Barker is also cohost of the nationally syndicated weekly talk show on the Air-America network and Freethought Radio and a contributing editor for Freethought Today.

Following years of extensive reading, Barker began to outgrow his religious beliefs. “If I had limited myself to Christian authors, I’d still be a Christian today,” Barker said. “I just lost my faith.”

“It is the first time that someone of this caliber is speaking in Mississippi in regards to the subject matter,” Green said. “We want anyone to come out. I think it is important for all people to hear different perspectives.”

That is essentially the goal of the SSA: to promote acceptance and diversity among religious beliefs, according to Green.

“By having this group on campus, we are trying to change any negative stigmas associated with nonreligious people,” she said.

The USM division of the SSA was the first to be established in Mississippi and became official in the fall of 2011.

“It was pretty difficult [establishing the group] based on locality, as you can imagine,” Green said. “I pretty much had to barter with Student Activities for six months, as far as atheism is concerned, to expose people to it.”

After that, Mississippi State University, the University of Mississippi, Millsaps College and Pearl River Community College followed rank.

Brooks leads Eagles past UTEP Kyle Smith Sports Editor Jerrold Brooks scored 11 of his 13 points in the second half, eight of which came during a 13-1 run late in the second half, as Southern Miss outlasted UTEP Tuesday night at Reed Green Coliseum.

The game got off to a slow start, with the score only 10-9 after 10 minutes of play in the first half.

UTEP (14-11, 7-5 C-USA) continued to pound the ball inside throughout the rest of the half, scoring 14 of their 22 first half points in the paint. Southern Miss scored half of their 16 first half points in the paint but was only 7-23 from the field and 2-11 from three in the opening half.

The second half started with UTEP jumping out to a 27-18 lead off of baskets from Konner Tucker and McKenzie Moore. The team’s traded baskets until the 11:36 mark,

when Southern Miss went on a 13-1 run to jump out to a 41-33 lead.

The lead proved too much for UTEP to overcome, as Southern Miss held off to win 45-39.

Head basketball coach Donnie Tyndall said he knew the game was going to be a struggle, as UTEP is a very good defensive team.

“We knew we were going to play a team that was good defensively,” Tyndall said. “We beat a very good basketball team. They make the game ugly, and I mean that in the most complimentary way possible.

They make you earn every basket and don’t give up points in the open court, which is where we thrive.”

Brooks, who went 3-10 from three, never doubted his shot.

“Coach told me to keep shooting,” Brooks said. “I kept finding ways to get open, and I knew in my mind some would go in. The three that fell - we needed them.”

Tyndall credited his team with winning in a different way than they

are comfortable with.

“We’ve won a lot of different ways,” Tyndall said. “Our team just finds a way. We like to play up tempo, we like to run, but tonight was like an NCAA tourney game: a half court dominated, very physical game.

Brooks led Southern Miss with 13 points on 5-14 shooting. Neil Watson was the only other Golden Eagle in double figures, as he scored 11 on the night. Daveon Boardingham added eight points and eight rebounds on the night.

The Eagles help UTEP to just 21.4% shooting from the field in the second half, and held them to just 15.4% from three the entire game.

Moore led UTEP with 12 points and 11 rebounds.

Southern Miss (21-6, 10-2 CUSA) heads to Memphis for a rematch on Saturday at noon. The game is scheduled to be broadcast on FSN.

Golden Eagle rally falls short at Alabama Barrett Negus Printz Writer The Alabama Crimson Tide scored five unearned runs in the fifth inning on two Southern Miss errors and held off the No. 21 ranked Golden Eagles’ furious comeback to win 10-8 Tuesday night in Tuscaloosa.

The Eagles struck first, with Dillon Day leading off the game with a double off Crimson Tide starter Taylor Guilbeau (1-0), and later scoring on a wild pitch. Guilbeau finished with seven strikeouts in five innings of work and no earned runs.

The Tide knotted the game at one in the fourth off Southern Miss starter Jake Winston, a true freshman making his debut as a Golden Eagle. Winston suffered the loss, striking out six in four innings of

work, giving up only one earned run on two hits.

“I thought Jake (Winston) was very composed and pitched very well considering it being his first start against Alabama on the road,” head baseball coach Scott Berry said.

“He pitched very well and has a very bright future ahead of him.”

Alabama plated five runs in the fifth on only two hits, breaking open the then low-scoring affair. They added another in the sixth inning, making the score 7-1.

The Eagles cut the lead to 7-3 on a Bradley Roney sacrifice fly and Chase Fowler’s run scoring single in the seventh. After A.J. Glasshof ’s second scoreless inning of relief, the Eagles got two more runs on a Tim Lynch double, cutting the lead to two.

The Eagles’ “never say die” attitude carried into the ninth, scoring three runs, only one earned on one hit and a walk off reliever Justin Kamplain. Kamplain put out the fire by striking out the potential gametying run with a runner on third to end the game.

“I tip my hat to my players for fighting back, but we fell short because of the situation that we made for ourselves,” Berry said. “We ended up playing against more than Alabama tonight, but playing against ourselves.”

With three hits and an RBI, including an RBI double in the threerun ninth, Isaac Rodriguez led the Golden Eagles. Booth led the Tide with three base knocks, driving in a pair of runs.
