Around 1:30 a.m. Sunday morning, Smith and two other USM football players, 21-year-old junior linebacker Tim Green and 23-year-old junior defensive end

“Martez is paralyzed right now from the waist down,” Fedora said. “We’re hopeful that that may

change in the future, but one way or another he is going to have a productive life, and we will be there for him either way. We hope that changes but if not we’ll deal with it.”

Eaglepalooza rocks the Burg Mary Margaret Halford Printz Writer Since May, the Student Government Association of Southern Miss has been preparing for Eaglepalooza, a free music festival held in downtown Hattiesburg.

Tomorrow night, the event will draw students and residents of Hattiesburg to come together and enjoy each other’s company while listening to music.

The event will include musical performances beginning at 5:30 p.m. with Matthew Funches and ending with We the Kings who

will play at 10:00 p.m. Other entertainment for the event includes: Banner Fair, Lindsey Lee, Speaker Boxx, and a Southern Miss pep rally.

Eaglepalooza executive director, Katherine Miller, said that the show will include all types of music. Funk, indie, hip-hop, and pop

rock will be represented and there will be something for everyone.

Along with musical entertainment, booths will also be set up on site at Eaglepalooza. The vendors will have food, beverages, and give-a-ways. Homemade des-

Students raise funds for new heart Jonathan Andrews Printz Writer Jessica Harris wasn’t sure she’d be able to put this birthday behind her.

Instead, Harris, who turned 17 on Nov. 3, got to celebrate her birthday at a party Wednesday in the Union lobby with members of the USM Civitan Club. In addition to throwing this birthday party for her, members of the club, along with SGA, are collecting money to defray the costs of the heart transplant that Harris needs to save her life.

Harris was born with hypoplastic left heart syndrome, a rare birth defect in which the left side of the patient’s heart is severely underdeveloped.

Brandi Carter, a Civitan Club member and the leader of this project, explained that a pre-ex-

isting condition clause in Jessica’s parents insurance caused it to not cover the transplant that Harris desperately needs to survive.

“I went on the website they made for her, and the story really touched my heart,” Carter said.

After looking into Harris’ story more, Carter said she brought the idea for the project to Melissa Carpenter as something she would be interested in helping with.

“That’s what Civitan Club is about, giving back to the community, any way we can,” Carter said.

She and the other members of the Civitan Club wanted today “to be really special for Jessica.”

Carter said, “We want her to know that this is her day.”

Harris said she is “very grateful” to all the people who have donated to her cause.

my future, too,” Harris said.

According to the website for her cause, www.thejessicaharrisdream.com, “Jessica almost died at birth and had the first of several open-heart surgeries at five days old. Her condition

stabilized, and she had a fairly healthy childhood, albeit with regular visits to a cardiologist.”

Today, Harris is looking forward to a heart transplant that could help her live out her life normally.

One of Harris’ main hobbies

is fashion, which inspired Masterchef Whitney Miller to create a cake for her that reflected that.

Miller was “honored” to be approached by SGA President Kasey Mitchell to provide the cake for the party Wednesday.

She said she was glad that she could be a part of giving Harris a happy 17th birthday.

“I wanted to be able to give her a little bit of everything she loves.

She’s a princess, and she’s into fashion,” Miller said.

She decorated the arrangement, which included one large cupcake with a “J” on top of it and several smaller cupcakes, with crowns and high-heeled shoes to reflect the love that Harris has for fashion.

Harris said she didn’t have to make a wish when she blew out the candle on her cupcake.

“All my wishes are coming true already,” she said.

Start spreadin’ the news, The Pride leaves Sunday Stormy Speaks Printz Writer At 7:00 a.m. on Nov. 21, the Pride of Mississippi Marching Band will depart for New York City to march in the 86th annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.

Since August, the Pride has consistently practiced parade formations as well as music and drill for their show, which is titled “Let’s Get Happy.” Pride drum major Jack Branning describes it as a “very

lively and energetic mixture” of the songs “Get Happy” and “Somewhere over the Rainbow” by iconic songstress Judy Garland.

“The show will get the people watching us in the Christmas spirit,” said freshman color guardmember Lauren Thompson.

On Thanksgiving morning, Pride members will crawl out of their warm hotel beds at 3:00 a.m. for rehearsal. Battling frigid temperatures and drowsiness, they will take their place in the fourth of twelve places reserved for the

marching bands before embarking on the two and a half mile parade route, where 3.5 million spectators, in addition to the 50 million via television broadcast, will watch their performance.

“I am very excited about the parade,” said sophomore color guard member Ariel Davis. “I have never watched or seen it before, and I am a little scared about all the people that will be watching me in person and on television.”

On the days they are not in the public eye, the Pride will spend

Alyson Haulsee, another executive director for Eaglepalooza is excited about the event to close out football season in a big way.

“Eaglepalooza is our final big bang for the football season,” Haulsee said, “This weekend is our last home game, and we want to pump everybody up and get them excited.”

Haulsee also wants the event to be a positive experience for those who come to it. “We want it to be something people really enjoy and can have good memories from it.

We want to leave everyone ready for next year.”

Miller hopes to encourage all students to come check out the concert Friday night.

“I advise everyone to come out and bring their friends,” Miller said. “There is something for everyone, and it is a great atmosphere – college at its finest.”

“I want to see other bands and how they perform,” Davis said. “I think it will be slightly overwhelming at first seeing so many people because I am not use to that, but I know in the end it will be amazing.”

“I’m excited to pump up the crowd with our music,” Branning said. “We have prepared so much and worked so hard, and I know the end result will be great.”

Tune in to NBC at 9:00 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 25 to watch the parade and hopefully glimpse a view of the Pride’s performance.

“Eaglepalooza is always a great time for the community,” Barr said. “Each year I have gone it has not let me down. I always know to expect a good time because it is always fun listening to the bands and bonding with others in the crowd.”

Best-selling author visits USM Barnes and Noble for book signing Author of the book “Rising from Katrina: How My Mississippi Hometown Lost It All and Found What Mattered,” best selling author, Kathleen Koch, will be doing a book signing at the Barnes and Noble bookstore on USM campus Thursday, Nov. 18 from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. and Friday Nov. 19 from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m..

Koch, a native of Bay St. Louis and member of the Southern Miss School of Mass Communication and Journalism Hall of Fame. Koch’s book made Amazon.com and Southern Independent Bestsellers List in their non-fiction categories.

As a reporter for the Cable News Network (CNN), Koch was on the ground covering Katrina’s impact on the Gulf Coast. Her coverage was the subject of her acclaimed CNN documentary “Saving My Town: The Fight for Bay St. Louis”

followed by the sequel “The Town that Fought Back.”

“I’m really excited about coming back to campus for this event, and to share my experiences with stu-

dents about what happened during Hurricane Katrina,” said Koch, who will also speak to Southern Miss journalism students on Thursday about her work.

Faculty, students mourn Leslie Broome Earvin Hopkins Printz Writer The week before classes began in August 2009, USM instructor of Spanish, Leslie Broome, was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. After struggling with this illness for almost a year and a half, she unexpectedly lost her battle with cancer Monday at Wesley Medical Center.

Broome had a husband, two daughters, and three granddaughters. Broome was only 57 years old, and she served for 17 years as an instructor at USM. Students and faculty reflect on the life and legacy Broome leaves behind.

Chair and Associate Professor of Foreign Language and Literature, Leah Fonder-Solano, talks about her memories of Broome.

“Leslie was a longtime colleague and friend,” Fonder-Solano said.

“She was one of the first people to welcome me when I came to Southern Miss nearly 15 years ago and went out of her way to make me feel part of the foreign language program. One of the reasons I and many of her colleagues feel so close to her is that Leslie never did anything by halves.

She was passionate about student learning and held students, even the indifferent ones, to very high standards. She expected the best from students – and got it. She also gave her best to them, pre-

paring incessantly for lessons and working with students to enable their success.”

Fonder-Solano also said, “Many students tell me how she inspired them to go on and major or minor in Spanish. Under Leslie’s guidance, many students had life-changing abroad experiences in Mexico and Spain.

Leslie marked my own professional life as well through her example of patience, reliability, and dedication to our students.”

French instructor Keltoum Rowland reflects on her memory of Broome as well.

“I’ve known Leslie since 1993 when I was a teaching assistant at USM,” Rowland said. “She was a dedicated, hard-working pro-

fessional colleague who will be greatly missed. It’s a great loss for our department.”

Rowland also said, “Aside from sharing tips on teaching languages, Leslie loved sterling silver jewelry and we always admired each others’. She was really looking forward to retirement to spend time with her grand-children.”

Fonder-Solano talks about one of her most fond memories of Broome.

“One of my fondest memories of Leslie is sharing a phone line,” Fonder-Solano said. “Due to budget cuts, the department had asked faculty members to share, which often lead to comical confusion, scribbled messages, and missed calls. At the time we thought of this an inconvenience,

but looking back, it gave me a chance to get to socialize informally more often with Leslie and get to know her husband, Joey, who often called to check up on her throughout the day.”

Graduate student in criminal justice, Andrew Brennan, was a former student of Broome.

“She was a good teacher, considering she pushed me really hard,” Brennan said. “She was the kind of teacher I needed to work harder for.

She challenged me to do better, and I did. She’s the kind of teacher that America needs.”

Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. today at Vernal Presbyterian Church in Lucedale, Miss. The burial will follow at Sunset Cemetery in Richton, Miss.

Media reports state that Green is unable to speak due to his wound and Jones had surgery to remove a bullet from his lung.

Two arrests have been made and a suspect named in the case.

Wilkerson, both of Bassfield, Miss., were arrested Monday night and charged with three counts of accessory after the fact for aggravated assault. During a Tuesday court appearance, each had their bond set at $1.5 million.

According to the Hattiesburg Police Department, three warrants for aggravated assault are still out for the arrest of Travis Brown, who is the suspected

shooter in the case. Brown is a black male, 6-feet tall and weighs 185 pounds.

Hattiesburg Police are urging anyone with information regarding Brown’s whereabouts to call their detective division at (601) 545-4911or Crimestoppers at (601) 582-STOP. The Hattiesburg American reported that following the incident, the City of Hattiesburg shut

down the Hunt Club Tuesday.

Mayor Johnny DuPree said this is a temporary suspension of its operating license until a thorough investigation is made. “We’re going to look at their occupancy rate, security personnel, hours of operation, loitering and making sure that the people that attend the establishment are the right age,” DuPree said. The suspension will be in effect for 30 days.

Students collect food to can hunger Deonica Davis Printz Writer Lately students have been hustling to either make final grades or put in a few more days of class in anticipation for the upcoming Thanksgiving holidays. Many students await time with friends and the family and, of course, the food.

Turkey, dressing, ham, yams…

Some students forget, however, that some don’t have that fel-

lowship or delicious food to share with family. Students in Free Enterprise, also known as SIFE, are making it possible for students to give canned goods so that homeless people in Hattiesburg can have a warm meal for the holiday season.

“SIFE has been at USM for three and a half years,” said associate professor of management, Jennifer Sequeira said. “One of our guiding principles is that we make people’s lives better.”

Sequeira has been the advi-

sor for the organization since its beginning on the campus. One of their major projects yearly is a canned food drive through a sponsorship with Campbell’s soup. Sequeira explained that the Campbell’s food drive is usually a big project and campus involvement would be helpful to the organization, to the community, and to the students themselves.

“Students can truly benefit because people always feel good when they give, and students have the opportunity to give to this

and know that their one can, or five cans, or their ten cans has truly gone to individuals who can really benefit from it.”

This year, the organization’s goal is to raise 5000 canned goods to can hunger. The advisor said that the SIFE team managed to raise 2000 canned goods last year and hope to get students and orga-

nizations involved to reach their new goal.

The organization has asked help from Greek organizations by asking each organization to participate in a competition to raise as many canned goods as they can.

Executive member of NPHC and president of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Brettany Payne was one of the first to agree to the challenge. “The motto of my sorority, Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Inc., is a community-conscious, action-oriented organization, so this can drive really hits home because it’s for the community. This is why all my chapter members volunteered to bring at least ten cans a piece.” Payne is a broadcast journalism major and said her sorority believes in helping the community. “With Thanksgiving and Christmas being so near we all need to remember to give the gift of giving.”

Another organization who jumped in line to help is SADD, lead by Davontae Washington as president. SADD, or Students against Destructive Decisions, was also eager to help SIFE with the canned food challenge. Washington contacted local high schools so that they too could participate and raise canned goods this week.

The winner of the Greek canned goods competition will be decided this weekend but SIFE will continue to raise canned goods up till Christmas break and next semester. All canned food items will be donated to the Edwards Street Fellowship Center in Hattiesburg.

Retired Lt. Gen. Hammond excited about new role at alma mater

J

eff Hammond, former record-setting Golden Eagle quarterback, is applying lessons he learned from 31 years in the U.S. Army to his new role with The University of Southern Mississippi Athletic Department.

During his military career, Hammond, 54, climbed the ranks all the way to major general, which saw him serve as Chief of Staff for Forces Command and commanding general of the 4th Infantry Division and the Multi-National Division in Baghdad, Iraq. Last July Hammond returned to his alma mater as the senior associate athletic director for advancement.

“I learned how to lead from the front, by example with character and the moral courage to always do the right thing,” said Hammond, reflecting on his military service. “I learned how to be a good listener as such skills are paramount in fundraising and in connecting with the Southern Miss family to include our graduates, friends, local and state communities. Furthermore, I learned how to channel passion, skills and organizational leadership in managing high-profile operations involving people of all ages from all walks of life.”

Hammond’s love for Southern Miss runs just as deeply as the devotion he maintains toward the country he served so honorably.

Hammond said the first thing he did after accepting his new job at the university was visit Danforth Chapel on campus to say a prayer.

“That was something I also did following each game, win or lose,” he said. “As soon as possible I would get to the chapel and offer my thankfulness for the opportunity to play football for USM.”

I’ve loved serving the Army, serving soldiers and their families, but right now my greatest accomplishment is coming home to serve the people who I admire and love so much. Each day from here on out is going to be a whole new adventure with excitement and energy.

Hammond, who lettered at Southern Miss for three seasons (1976-78), notes that his stiffest challenge and top priority is to help increase contributions to the Eagle Club. “The Eagle Club exists for a single purpose which is to generate funds to support our more than 360 athletes participating in 16 NCAA-sanctioned intercollegiate sports,” he said. “Simply stated, Eagle Club donations pay scholarship costs. We continue to fall significantly short of meeting this financial obligation and over the last five years have annually raised less than 50 percent of the necessary funds to pay for our athletic scholarships.”

Hammond’s extensive military career included leadership roles in Operation Desert Shield and Operation Desert Storm in the early 1990s. Shortly thereafter he led a battalion during Operation Joint Endeavor in BosniaHerzegovina.

To say Hammond is enthused about representing Southern Miss as a fulltime member of the athletic department is akin to saying tanks are loud.

Retired Gen. Buford “Buff” Blount III’s stellar 33year career in the U.S. military culminated in his command of the 3rd Infantry Division (Mechanized) that spearheaded allied coalition efforts in Operation Iraqi Freedom.

And it all began at his alma mater, Southern Miss, where he completed its Army Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) training program in 1971.

“Southern Miss gave me a great, well rounded education. That education, combined with my time in its ROTC, provided the foundation upon which I was able to build a successful 33-year career in the Army,” Blount said. “During my career I often relied on the lessons I learned at the university, and continue to be impressed by its support of its ROTC program.”

Locally, 47 cadets from the Southern Miss Air Force ROTC Detachment 432 honored veterans during their annual 24-hour vigil at the Hattiesburg Veterans Memorial Park. A tradition begun in 1993 by the Arnold Air Society Squadron student organization, the cadets performed duties similar to those of the sentries guarding the Tomb of the Unknowns at Arlington National Cemetery in Washington D.C.

Among his many military honors are the Distinguished Service Medal; Silver Star; Legion of Merit (with two Oak Leaf Clusters); Meritorious Service Medal (with six Oak Leaf Clusters); and Army Commendation Medal (with two Oak Leaf Clusters). He now resides in the Hattiesburg area with his wife, the former Anita Barr, who is a 1969 graduate of Southern Miss.

Veteran’s Day isn’t one of those national holidays packed with hot dogs, apple pie and fireworks that light up the sky; but maybe it should be.

If there was ever a group of individuals deserving of a holiday and party, it is the men and women who have served this nation in both peace and in war. From the lowest private to the highest general, each has sacrificed – in some way – to be a member of the armed forces.

Take for instance retired Army Capt. Sandy Henderson. She graduated from The University of Southern Mississippi with a Criminal Justice degree and received her commission in 1984 after going through the ROTC program.

Following graduation she spent seven years in the military.

“It was a great time to be in ROTC, during the 80’s at Southern Miss,” said Henderson. “We had one of the largest ROTC programs in the country and had some wonderful instructors who are still there today.”

Henderson’s seven years in the military were both rewarding and challenging. She first spent time in

Bailey and four others founded the grassroots organization Raise Your Pints (RYP) in spring 2009. Primarily, the group exists to educate citizens and raise funds to lobby for a change in beer laws.

“Because this law has been on the books literally since the end of prohibition, most people, even beer drinkers, don’t know we have this law that limits their choices,” Bailey said.

“Most people think all beer is pale, yellow, and fizzy because that’s all you ever see. So our first job is to show them what beer can be so they know what great gourmet beer is and just what they’re being denied.”

from us,” said senior entertainment industry major Sam White. “Essentially, Mississippi is still running under a postprohibition era. We’re so restricted in our selection that we don’t even realize how high of a price we’re paying for the quality we receive.”

Another priority of the organization is to legalize homebrewing beer. Although homemade wine is legal to produce, making beer is still an activity denied Mississippians. “Homebrewing is a tradition in America and almost all of our Founding Fathers made beer,” Bailey said. “If it was good enough for George Washington and Thomas Jefferson, it’s good enough for me.”

RYP has hosted many events celebrating beer to raise aware-

ness for their cause, and so far have been successful in gathering interest and support. This summer, Governor Haley Barbour announced the week of July 24-31 the first ever “Mississippi Craft Beer Week,” which culminated in the first ever beer festival, “Top of the Hops,” in Jackson.

Craft beer is especially important to Bailey. “Craft beer is beer brewed in small batches by artisans with the same care and passion that goes into fine wine,” Bailey said, “and like wine, it’s a product that is paired with foods and enjoyed as the sophisticated beverage it is. Our laws ban these products in Mississippi while allowing cheap, mass-produced light beer.”

Caitlyne Shirley, a chemistry major from Clinton, Miss., gives her support to RYP. “Since many beer manufacturers can’t sell their beer here, there’s lower competition among the providers who can sell in the state, meaning less beer selection.”

Shirley said with the events RYP has organized, the group is well on their way to changing the game in Mississippi. “I think they are doing a great job with opening other breweries’ eyes to the fact that Mississippi is a viable place to sell beer as well as drawing attention to the unfair laws in the state.”

Bailey said the organization is gathering momentum in congress. “We’ve enjoyed support from senators and representatives across Mississippi,” he said. “Everyone knows how bad the state budget is right now.

By removing the ban on these high-end gourmet beers, we can raise state revenue without raising taxes. That’s a winner.”

Gathering the support of congressmen isn’t the only focus for RYP, however. “We need Mississippians from across our great state to step up and help make this happen,” Bailey said.

Bailey encourages student support for RYP. One way to become involved is simply by spreading the word. To become a one-year member of the organization, RYP offers memberships for $25, which comes with a RYP t-shirt.

“I think they really need the rallied support of all Mississippi citizens to help make a change, but it is definitely a realistic venture,” White said. “I support them through and through.”

If you’re in college and mid terms or finals are about to come about, your probably not getting much. The average amount of sleep for the everyday person is between 7 and 8.5 hours, though this may differ from person to person.

Sleep deprivation (SD) is an ongoing dilemma. Certain professions, school, family, even a growing portion of leisure activities are becoming more time consuming, all of which may lend a hand in compromising our slumber. This may all lead to cognitive performance problems and other health related issues.

In essence, our sleep is our bodies way of recharging through thermoregulation, tissue recovery, and energy conservation. In studies on the effects of sleep deprivation done by Dr. Badkoff, the idea of “sleep-based neuropsychological perspective” arose. Simply put, this means that a lack of sleep will hinder areas of the brain related to cognitive performance. This includes higher functions such as language, executive functions, divergent thinking, and creativity.

Prolonged wakefulness does take a toll on our attention, memory, accuracy and speed.

Ph. D student and teacher Leslie Rasmussen added, “SD is just part of going to college, although I do feel the effects pertaining to paying attention, and concentrating while well rested versus being tired.”

Surprisingly a 4.0 pre-med student, Jakayla Herrell from McComb, Miss. biology major, said, “When I am tired, I go to bed, normally around 10 (p.m.). I do as much as I can, I am not staying up all night, I need my rest.” Sounds like she’s onto something.

Now, this next bit of information will pertain to those up all night study sessions. Not only will you be less likely to evaluate information well, but you will think the majority of your answers are right! Guess what that is really not good for? ...

Test taking! The longer we lack sleep the more impaired our self-evaluation becomes.

Dr. Y. Harrison and Dr. J.A. Horne in their study of sleep loss and temporal memory have shown that confidence is stronger with our incorrect answers due to sleepy people thinking their performances were high. SD deteriorates accuracy

As we get older there is less of an effect of SD on our abilities.

People above 30 may take longer to do the same tasks but with more accuracy. This can be labeled a speed/accuracy trade-off.

The older population has a faster recovery time from sleep deprivation than do the younger.

In general, women report having more sleeping problems than men, though they show less effects of SD deterioration then men. Dr. Corsi-Cabrera

and other researchers in their study of sex-differences in the International Journal Psychophysiol hypothesizes that this may have to do with evolution, pertaining to nurturing and rearing children. Men, on the other hand, have a faster recovery rate from sleep deprivation than women.

Now, you know sleep is essential for brain function and for retaining all this information you’re working so hard for.

So get your comfy pillow, get in your PJ’s and get some sleep!

Call of Duty: Black Ops almost hits the mark Ben Sutton Printz Writer

Call of Duty: Black Ops has hit the shelves amid massive hype and record sales. Activision, the game company behind the hugely popular Call of Duty game series, published the game. Activison’s partner company Treyarch, makers of Call of Duty: World at War, developed the game itself.

Black Ops’ single player mode follows the story of Alex Mason, a fictional American special forces operative who does much of the American government’s secret dirty work during the 1960s.

The game opens with a bang, dropping the player straight into Communist Cuba during the Bay of Pigs invasion with a mission to assassinate Fidel Castro. From there, the game rarely loses its quick pace, which lives up to that of the previous Call of Duty games (the Modern War-

fare games immediately come to mind). The story of Black Ops kept me engaged with surprising plot twists, and it wouldn’t be a Call of Duty game without plenty of epic last stands, daring assaults, and narrow escapes.

The weapons are largely very similar to those in the Modern Warfare series (except in the case of a few flashback missions to earlier events in history), but

new ones include a guided missile launcher and a crossbow with explosive bolts. Joining the classic weapon attachments are new ones like a flamethrower and the Reflex site. New multiplayer killstreak rewards are probably the biggest change, including a remote-controlled bomb on wheels and the Blackbird jet that reveals the location of the enemy.

However, Black Ops didn’t

bring much new to the table in terms of gameplay. While the story was interesting, I often had the feeling that I was playing a better-looking but less fun version of Modern Warfare. Although the previous Call of Duty games have sometimes been a little confusing in terms of finding and completing objectives to advance the mission, there were many moments in Black Ops that left me disoriented and frustrated as instructions on how to advance the mission were drowned out by explosions and gunfire.

The controls also felt somehow clunky; although the control scheme is identical to that of the Modern Warfare games, the game’s response to controller actions often felt slow in comparison. The difficult controls for the vehicular portions of the game were perhaps the most annoying part of the single player experience.

The game’s multiplayer, though not really identical to its predecessors’, still felt like more of the same. The mechanics and feel of the game are very similar to the Modern Warfare games, which make Black Ops feel more like an expansion to the Modern Warfare series than a stand-alone game.

Given the choice to go out and buy Black Ops or to rent it and

play through it once before going back to Modern Warfare 2, I’d probably pick option two.

Even so, some additions to the multiplayer – like greatly increased weapon appearance customization – may be worth your time. Perhaps the best addition to the game’s multiplayer is the inclusion of online split-screen multiplayer, which has been unavailable in the series since Call of Duty 3. Black Ops is also the first Call of Duty game to give the option to save videos of online play – perhaps a quiet nod to the success of the saved film features in competitor Bungie Studios’ Halo franchise.

Despite the game’s flaws, it’s unfair to judge Black Ops only by comparison to its predecessors.

After all, it’s difficult to live up to such great games as Activision’s Modern Warfare series, and though I feel it falls short, I think Black Ops is a worthy effort and comes very close to hitting the mark. Though Black Ops could have used a bit more polish before release, it’s still a good game in its own right and brings a lot to the table with an engaging single player mode, a triedand-tested multiplayer setup, and a fair degree of replay value. Call of Duty: Black Ops deserves nothing less than an 8 out of 10.

Harry Potter to cast another spell Ashton Pittman Printz Writer Dozens of sleepy Harry Potter fans may be lumbering into class Friday morning, as “Potterheads” across the Pine Belt gear up for the midnight release of the series’ seventh installment. The first showing for “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1” is set to start at 11:59 Thursday night at Hattiesburg’s local theater complex, the Grand 18.

“I am absolutely attending the Harry Potter midnight premiere,” said USM senior Heather Murray, a devoted fan who takes part in a charity organization called the Harry Potter Alliance. “I do have class at 10 a.m. the next morning, but I couldn’t care less – I could have class at 5 a.m. and I’d still be at the theater at midnight.”

Murray is one of many local Potter fans making the decision to attend the midnight debut. As of Wednesday, several of the Grand 18’s planned 11 showings had already sold out.

Cast, crew and critics were given early screenings of the film at the recent London and New York City premieres. Response has been positive overall, with the film hovering around an above average 80% approval rating at rottentomatoes. com, a website that gauges critical reception to films.

was among the impressed. “This is my favorite film of the lot,” she said, speaking to Reuters from the red carpet at the London premiere.

Rowling rose from poverty to become the world’s first billionaire author because of the Potter series. She said she knew that the culmination of a decade of work would be a poignant moment for the cast, especially for the three young stars who grew up playing Harry, Ron, and Hermione.

“I feel like I’m further ahead in the grieving process,” she said. “I feel like I’m the one who will be counseling them when it’s all over.”

Rowling’s final entry into the Harry Potter series released in 2007.

The film is based on the first half of that book. Continuing the story from 2009’s “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince,” “Hallows” follows the magical trio’s search for the elusive Horcruxes, magical items in which Harry’s arch nemesis, Lord Voldemort, has encased parts of his soul. Only after finding and destroying the Horcruxes can the trio hope to destroy Voldemort once and for all.

The second and final part of the finale is set to be released on July 14, 2011. That means the story will reach its conclusion nearly ten years after Harry made his grand debut on the big screen in “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone,” back November 2001.

day. She said she found someone to relate to in Harry throughout her turbulent teenage years.

The final book was released just after she graduated high school.

That was fitting, she said. “It was a little like letting go of childhood and moving on,” she said.

Now, she expects to graduate

college just ahead of the release of the very last film next summer.

“It’s like tying a bow on these parts of my life,” she said. “But just like high school and college will always be with me, so will Harry.”

A promotional trailer for the two-part finale boldly promises to deliver “the motion picture event

of a generation.” For a generation of Potter fans like Murray, that promise may be more than just a slogan.

Muggles make Rowling's magic a reality Ashton Pittman Printz Writer For Harry Potter fans like Grace Williams and Heather Murray, the magic won’t end when the credits roll for the latest film in the series.

The two USM students are part of a registered 501c3 non-profit charity organization called the “Harry Potter Alliance,” or the HPA. “The HPA tries to take the values in Harry Potter – courage, social justice, equality, bravery, friendship, and kindness – and live them out in the real world,” said Murray, who serves as the Writing Manager for HPA. Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling has called the organization that was built by fans of her books “humbling” and “uplifting.”

“The great thing about the HPA is that they set very specific goals to make a change that can be seen,” said Williams, a supporter.

Most of the causes the HPA fights for are causes that allow fans to draw parallels between the books and the real world, Mur-

ray said. One such cause is LGBT rights. Murray said the group relates the struggle of the character Remus Lupin, who transforms into a werewolf every full moon, to the struggles of gay people.

“Because he’s a werewolf, it’s hard for him to find a job, parents don’t want their kids around him, and he’s thought to be dangerous to society,” she said. “So we look at his situation where he’s forced to live in secrecy, and we equate that to LGBT citizens in our society who are forced to hide their sexuality because society doesn’t accept it.”

Death Eaters, but also against the lies spread by the wizard newspaper, The Daily Prophet.

In 2008, the group began a project called “Rocking Out Against Voldemedia” in an effort to fight for “fair and honest media.”

HPA also fights for a cause that is dear to the hearts of many fans – literacy. Katie Twyman, who is also an HPA staff member, said the group managed to gather over 41,000 books in a drive aimed at putting books in the hands of potential readers.

those books were donated to the Delta Center for Culture and Learning in Mississippi at Delta State University.

The group is currently focused on the Deathly Hallows Campaign, which will take place during the period between the release of the two parts of the film finale, “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.”

“Through this, we’ll be targeting seven real-world Horcruxes,” Twyman said.

In “Hallows,” Horcruxes, are evil objects, seven of which Harry and friends must destroy in order to put an end to Lord Vo l d e m o r t ’s reign of ter ror.

HPA will focus on one real world issue, or “Horcrux,” for each o f the

seven months leading up to the grand finale.

Economic inequality, LGBT prejudice, and illiteracy are some of the “Horcruxes” HPA plans to target.

Last January, the HPA ran a campaign in response to the devastating Haitian earthquakes.

Rowling joined HPA by donating a signed set of all seven books. With the “Helping Haiti Heal” campaign, the HPA raised $123,000, which was enough to send five planes filled with relief supplies to Haiti.

“In a few short months, a bunch of lovers of Harry Potter from across the world can make an actual difference,” Williams said.

“It’s an incredible feeling.”

For Twyman, one main theme sums up the motivation behind the HPA. “We operate under the motto, ‘The Weapon we have is Love,’” she said. “In a time when there is so much fear and turmoil, I think that the HPA really shows that magic is real, even if it’s not in the ways we expect.”

Eagles soar past Jaguars 93-58 Jonathan Andrew Printz Writer The Golden Eagles showed what they could do with leading scorer Gary Flowers on the bench in a 9358 victory against the University of South Alabama Jaguars.

The Golden Eagles put up two 17-point runs in the decisive victory. They held at a 41-point lead over the Jaguars in the second half of the game.

Flowers was benched to recover from some sickness he had been experiencing leading up to the game, in addition to an incident at practice according to Coach Larry Eustachy.

Senior guard R.L. Horton said the key to his performance in the contest was “not thinking about it.”

Horton scored 17 points in the first half and finished the game with 25.

“I try to go out there and take it one possession at a time,” Horton said. “Last year I got to thinking about things too much.”

The Golden Eagles lead the Jaguars in field goals during every

period of the game. The Eagles finished with 54.4 percent from the floor while the Jags scored 28.3 percent.

The Jags also lagged behind the Eagles in rebounds, only retrieving 34 total rebounds in the game, compared to the Eagles 50.

Senior forward Josimar Ayarza said the key to the team’s performance tonight was that they went out on the court and had fun.

“Everyone just did what they were supposed to do,” Ayarza said.

Ayarza, who scored 17 points and 10 rebounds, said the absence of Flowers only encouraged the team to play at their best.

Coach Larry Eustachy said he was “shocked” at how easily his team won the game and can see them only getting better as their season progresses and said working with the team was “a great coaching environment.”

“We’ll have a lot of weapons before it’s over,” Eustachy said.

The Eagles next test is at home against McNeese State at 7:00 p.m. at Reed Green Coliseum.
