Voodoo Kings signs record contract Stormy Speaks Printz Writer Last Thursday, members of Dr. E and the Voodoo Kings, a Hattiesburg-based Chicago blues and 70s style funk band, signed a contract with Southern Miss’ student-run record label South City Records, allotting the band studio space, time to record a 40-minute studio album, and subsequent promotion for that album as well as the band. The band’s front man and guitarist is Southern Miss assistant professor of psychology David Echevarria, known by many as Dr. E. Along with bassist Tate Thriffiley, percussionist Andrew Wooten and other members, the number of which varies depending on the size of the venue, Dr. E and the Voodoo Kings has been performing covers as well as original compositions since the fall of 2007. Originally from New York City, Dr. E has been playing music professionally for over 20 years. He and other groups he has performed with have struggled with record labels previously, but it seems a match has been made between South City Records and Dr. E and the Voodoo Kings. “I first heard Dr. E and the Voodoo Kings at the Roots Festival last year and met with Dr. E shortly af-

Update: ten programs saved in appeals USM has had pending budget cuts for a long time now, and now that the public has been notified

about which programs were cut, students, faculty, and staff must deal with life after the budget cuts in the process of moving on towards the next step. On Jan. 19 USM President Martha Saunders sent an email to the

student body reading that she received a report from the Program Elimination Appeals Committee and had referred that report to the Executive Cabinet for review. The report Saunders received was a list of recommendations for

the elimination of 11 programs, the retention of 10 programs and the retention of faculty or graduate assistant for two programs, which responds to the 23 appeals. On Feb. 2 Saunders sent the student body yet another email reading
