The University of Southern Mississippi is experiencing record-breaking enrollment for the 2011-2012 academic year, with numbers totaling 17,968. USM’s freshman enrollment alone went up 8 percent, making it the fourth straight freshman class record. The incoming class also has 49 students who accepted Presidential Scholarships and have ACT scores of 30 or higher. The Hattiesburg campus hosts 14,795 students, while the Gulf Coast campus has 3,167. So, why are students choosing USM to advance in their education? “I believe that students are recognizing our competitive advantage,” said Joe Paul, Vice President for Student Affairs. “Southern Miss offers all of the trappings of a major college experience, yet with smaller class sizes and more personal attention.” Paul also credits USM’s success to its recruitment team and

desire to get students in for private visits. “Our recruitment team does a great job, and if we can get a prospective student to campus for a private visit, we have great success in convincing them this is the place for them.” Not only does USM have small classes and opportunities for a more personal experience, but it also gives students numerous choices of clubs and organizations and, more importantly, many academic major options. “There is growth in all five academic colleges this year,” said Paul. “One of our great advantages is the breadth of academic offerings with over one hundred academic majors.” Amber Butler, a junior geology major, agrees that USM has much to offer its students. “I think students are attracted to Southern because it’s located in a great community and the university is highly diverse and offers many different opportunities for a student to

behalf of Lt. Gov. Phil Bryant and other state citizens, attacks the individual mandate provision of the law. The provision, which goes into effect starting in 2014, requires all persons without health insurance to purchase an approved policy or face a penalty.

“From a Constitutional basis, the government exceeded its authority,” McDaniel said. More than a dozen other lawsuits across the country contest the PPACA on similar grounds, saying that it violates the Constitution. However, two key differences make this par-
