Student selected to promote Midtown project Justin Mitchell Printz Writer The leadership committee for the Midtown Project: Hattiesburg chose a University of Southern Mississippi student to serve as photographer and documentarian throughout the entire process from master planning to postconstruction. Sid Gonsoulin, member of the leadership committee as well as the Associate Vice President for Student Affairs at Southern Miss, said that Becca Morris was selected to document the story of the innovative project, which hopes to bring a mixed-used overlay district for development and redevelopment to center-part of Hattiesburg labeled “Midtown.” “We are fortunate to be able to attract a student with the professionalism, experience, and uniqueness to assist in delivering a pictorial history of the master plan from A-Z,” Gonsoulin said. Gonsoulin added that The Midtown Project has been in the works since 2006. The proposed area for plan development includes the

area of Hattiesburg bordered by Forrest General Hospital, USM, U.S. 49, and 33rd Street. The master plan for the development area was put into affect after the City of Hattiesburg received the HUD Tiger Grant, a 50/50 matching grant program. $150,00 was raised locally in order to request the grant, and HUD Tiger matched the donation. “The city of Hattiesburg was recently notified that it was going to be awarded the grant, the only one awarded in the state of Mississippi,” Gonosulin said. The master plan was created in hopes to bring to the district such as state-of-the-art infrastructure, educational programs, medical programs, entertainment, mix of housing opportunities, sporting events and cultural arts events. Gonsoulin said that stakeholders include the City of Hattiesburg, Forrest General Hospital, Southern Miss, Hub City Development and Bancorp South, just to name a few. “The master plan will be used as a marketing tool that will be

Rebecca Morris, a senior public relations major, was chosen to work for Midtown Project: Hattiesburg. The project was created to bring state-of-the-art infrastructure, educational programs, medical programs, entertainment and more to the Hattiesburg area between Forrest General Hospital, U.S. 49 and 33rd Street.

Students to run in red for American Heart Assoc. The Running in Red 5K will take place Friday at 6:30 p.m. at Pride Field. The Office of Student Activities, along with the Office of Community Service Learning and the Office of Recreational Sports, are sponsoring the event on campus in an effort to raise money for the American Heart Association.

“The red is symbolic for the American Heart Association,” said Audrey Charoglu, the Interim Associate Director of Union and Programs. “So we thought it would be fun to do an event themed around that to try to raise awareness.” Charoglu suggetsted participants wear all red, but it is not required to participate. People will be dressed in all sorts of attire, from red dresses to red shorts and t-shirts. So far 75 people have signed

up for the event, but that number could rise by Friday, as registration is available at the event. According to Josh Duplantis, Assistant Director for the Office of Community Service Learning, this event and others like it are aimed at getting more people on campus, students, faculty and staff alike, involved in volunteering. “Support for [the Heart Walk] has definitely grown over the last four or five years,” he said. “More

awareness and fun events surrounding it has helped it develop.” Duplantis said this event is one of the larger events put on by OCSL, but it is hard to draw comparisons among the variety of events that they help organize every year. As far as this particular event, Duplantis said the sponsors of the event were looking for creative ways to reach the goal that Southern Miss set for fundraising. “Maybe there are people who want to run instead of walk,

and this event is for them,” he said. “The name Running in Red also gives it a theme having to do with the American Heart Association.” The route for the event will zig-zag through and around campus to create a 5K route. Advance registration for those who are 12 years old and under, Southern Miss students, and Pine Belt Pacers is $10. General admission is $12. The day of the event, the price rises to $12 and $15, respectively.
