USM maintains golden traditions Arielle Edwards Printz Writer Southern Miss Homecoming is a community-wide celebration based on a love for and traditions of the university. Since its beginning in 1925, Homecoming has become one of the community’s biggest events. It’s a chance for Southern Miss alumni, friends and fans to gather each fall to reunite with their beloved school. Joe Paul, vice president of Student Affairs, said there are many homecoming traditions, both new and old. He added that the studentmade standing displays called floats are one of his favorite traditions. The name “floats” was given to the stationary displays, which came about when the university stopped having a parade in the early 1970s. “The organizations used to build moving floats, and when the parade

ended they began building these stationary displays but continued to call them floats,” Paul said. The parade was revived by SGA in the late 1990s and moved downtown last year, as it had been back in the day. Jennifer Payne, who works with the Alumni Association, said the parade returned to its historic route last year in honor of the Centennial. “Because of the great turn-out and participation by downtown businesses, the parade is being held downtown again this year,” Payne said. The parade will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Hattiesburg Public Library on Hardy Street. It will travel east on Hardy, down Front street, make a left onto Main Street and end at Forrest Street. Payne added that the parade will be led Eddie Holloway, Dean of Students and this year’s Grand Marshal. The parade will include moving floats, Southern Miss athletes,

A once popular Hub City venue, the Bottling Company, will make its return to Hattiesburg in the near future. The Bottling Company opened the year after Hurricane Katrina, in 2006, but was replaced by The Shed Barbecue and Blues Joint in June 2010. Now, according to one of the five managing partners in the business, Mitch Brown, the owners of the business decided it was time to make the switch back. “We were limited in what we could do with our building,” Brown said. “There was a demand from students to bring back our late night atmosphere at the Bottling Company.” Brown said they will still sell barbecue, but they are bringing the var-

Betsy Rowell, director of the Historic Hattiesburg Downtown Association, said there is a market for that variety of food choices, especially for the lunch crowd downtown. “The Bottling Company had really exceptional branding, and that is what the owners are going back to,” Rowell said. Rowell said the Bottling Company’s location inside the historic bottling company building downtown adds to its draw. She said that from the buzz she has heard, people are excited to have the bottling company back in Hattiesburg. “It’s like welcoming back an old friend,” Rowell said. Brown said the building is doing some remodeling for the change, but it is open for business for its normal hours from 11 a.m. until 9 p.m. as a

family restaurant. After 9:00, the late night menu will return, along with live music on some nights. Brown said the building is also open to private parties. Brown said the blues feel of The Shed’s music performances was a change from the Bottling Company’s music scene, but they hope to revisit that with the grand reopening of The BoCo. “We’ll really try to get a good variety of music in there, not just for the college kids, but for a lot of different people too,” he said. The Shed’s Facebook page posted about the change last week. “We would like to begin this with saying how much we truly appreciate all you Hattiesburg ShedHeds that have supported The Shed over the last year. Can’t ask for a better bunch of ShedHeds than you guys!”
