Former USM athlete to start in Super Bowl A former University of Southern Mississippi student athlete will be a starting player in Super Bowl XLVI on Sunday in Indianapolis, Ind. In 2009, Michael Boley committed to the New York Giants when he

signed a five-year, $25 million contract. Boley will serve as a starting outside linebacker on Sunday when the Giants face the New England Patriots for the Lombardi Trophy.

Boley is a Gadsden, Ala. native who had a successful college football career at Southern Miss. He won the Conerly Trophy in 2004, an award that is given to the best college

football player in Mississippi. Boley finished with 423 tackles, 28.5 sacks and nine forced fumbles in his college career. He was also voted as CUSA’s defensive most valuable during his last season as a Golden Eagle.

In 2005, Boley signed with the Atlanta Falcons in the fifth round of the NFL draft. In a recent interview with the Chicago Tribune,

former Falcons strength coach and Chicago Bears current general manager Phil Emery said that even though Boley wasn’t chosen until the fifth round and was criticized for not playing as hard as he could have at Southern Miss, he urged the Falcons to sign him.

USM ranked most popular Miss. university Justin Mitchell News Editor The University of Southern Mississippi ranked in the top 20th percentile of the nation’s most popular universities, according to a report published Tuesday by U.S. News & World Report.

Southern Miss placed No. 43 out of 250 national universities included in the report. Mississippi State University took the number No. 65 spot while the University of Mississippi placed

at the bottom half of the list, ranking No. 127.

The University of Alabama held strong at No. 32 while the University of South Alabama ranked below USM at No. 48.

Louisiana State University was ranked at No. 82.

Vice President for Student Affairs Joe Paul said that the statistics show that students are excited about becoming Golden Eagles.

“This recognition affirms our belief that if we can get a student to visit and really come to know Southern Miss, they will then feel

excited and compelled to enroll,” Paul said in an interview with Southern Miss Now. “Southern Miss is a dynamic place where great things are happening. Great students are discovering this and helping us recruit others.”

U.S. News & World Report calculated their findings by determining each school’s yield, which is the percentage of applicants accepted by a college and who actually enroll at that university. The figures used in U.S. News & World Report’s list are from the fall 2010 semester.

USM accepted 3,279 applicants during that semester, and 1,591 of those students enrolled, yielding 48.5 percent overall.

According to the Office of Admissions, admissions information is sent to the Office of Institutional Research for final data publication and is available online. According to the Office of Institutional Research’s website, 18,045 students are enrolled at Southern Miss, and 16,604 of those students are duplicated.

That means 1,441 students were newly enrolled in the fall of 2010.

Southern Miss’s recent popularity has gained national spotlight. Aside from being within the top 50 most popular universities, the Golden Eagle football team won the the C-USA championship this year as well as the Sheraton Hawai’i Bowl and earned a spot on the BSC rankings board, while MSU and Ole Miss did not. The Golden Eagle men’s basketball team is No. 1 in C-USA, and the track team is currently ranked as one of the top 10 track teams in the nation.

Boley said. “They both do a lot of different things as far as alignment. That’s where it all starts.

They split those guys out as No. 1 receivers and they put them in slots like they’re receivers. They try to cause mismatch problems.

But we have a linebacker core.

We also have three great safeties who can come down and get their hands on those guys to make it easier.”

Other former Southern Miss athletes have recently committed to various NFL teams. Former Seattle Seahawks player Chris White

joined the New York Giants in 2011 alongside Boley. Former USM athlete Chris Clark signed with the Denver Broncos in 2010 via waivers from the Minnesota Vikings. Clark was a part of the Broncos when they made it to Super Bowl playoffs this year.

The 27th annual Southern Miss Coca-Cola Classic Rodeo is scheduled to be held at Forrest County’s James Lynn Cartlidge Multipurpose Center Feb. 17-18. The rodeo will be presented by The University of Southern Mississippi’s Department of Recreational Sports.

The African American Military History Museum began its annual Black History Month Wednesday.

A different group of war veterans is honored and remembered each year. This year, the museum will honor veterans of the Vietnam War. Each Saturday in February, a veteran will speak at 11 a.m., with a Q&A session and small reception to follow.

Speakers this year include Sgt. Henry L. Bethley; Sgt. Maj. Ralph Lindsey; Darthy Johnson, Lt. Col; U.S.AF, Sgt. 1st Class T.J. Gordon, Jr. and Sgt. 1st Class Charles J. Brown. The museum will also host a book signing with Johnson, who recently released her second book titled “Consequences: Murder on

the Air Force Base.”

The special exhibit this year will highlight the career and personal possessions of Sgt. 1st Class Charles J. Brown. Brown is the recipient of two Bronze Star medals and a Purple Heart medal. In 1994, he was named Hattiesburg’s first Veteran of the Year. Brown was also featured on The History Channel’s “Vietnam in HD.” Latoya Norman, museum relations associate, encourages USM students to attend.

“This is a wonderful opportunity to meet veterans from the Pine Belt area that served our country and are very enthusiastic about sharing their stories,” Norman said.

The museum is open Tuesday through Saturday from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. Admission is free.

Student to perform at Carnegie Hall Michelle Holowach Printz Writer When he was nine years old, Ismael Brandao received a trumpet from his mother as a birthday gift.

Nineteen years later, he and his trumpet are traveling to Carnegie Hall in New York City to meet and learn from one of the finest orchestras in the world – the Berlin Philharmonic.

On Feb. 23 and 24 Carnegie Hall will be hosting a master class with the Berlin Philharmonic, and Brandao is one of three trumpeters selected from thousands of applicants across the United States to attend the workshop.

“Any time that we have students who are winning international competitions or participating in international festivals

it shines a bright light on our program,” said Michael Miles, director of the School of Music.

“It tells the world that we are producing high quality musicians.”

Born in São Paulo, Brazil, Brandao grew up in a family of musicians and discovered at an early age that he wanted to follow the same musical footsteps.

Brandao began his path towards mastering the trumpet when he was nine years old and joined a music conservatory.

“I started taking it more seriously when I was 14 years old,” Brandao said. “I was studying at the school of music and I liked to practice a lot. Then I got a job with an orchestra when I was 14 years old, and I decided, ‘Wow, I want to be a musician.’”

In 2008 Brandao toured the United States with his orches-

tra, and then in 2009 enrolled in the English Language Institute at USM. Now, he is a freshman music performance major in the School of Music and is soaring to excellence with his skills as a trumpet player. He plays with the top music ensembles at USM, including Wind Ensemble, Symphony Orchestra and Trumpet5.

Trumpet professor Jason Bergman encouraged Brandao to apply for the Berlin Philharmonic Master Class last semester. Brandao was notified of his selection mid-December and will leave for the workshop on February 21st.

“Ismael works extremely hard and is very focused on his goals in life,” Bergman said. “He works so hard to achieve those goals, and he doesn’t let little distractions take him away from them.”

Brandao said his dream is to one day be a member of an international orchestra, his favorite being the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra. Now that dream is getting closer to becoming a reality.

“I’m extremely proud of him,” Bergman said. “I’m proud of him because he’s going to represent our university so well, and I’m proud of him because it shows that as you work really hard you can start doing things to reach your dreams.”

Brandao’s success in following his dreams can serve as an inspiration to other aspiring musicians and to all students at Southern Miss.

Miles said that any time the School of Music’s students participate in an activity that is a high achievement it gives everyone else in the program the impetus to work harder.

ful, they’re just not always sure that they can be,” Miles said. “And having someone be that successful inspires them to know that they too can be that successful.”

“He can serve as an example because he has a very positive attitude, and he’s so focused on working hard,” Bergman said. “He views his time at school as an opportunity to improve and to gain as much knowledge as possible.”

Bergman also noted that the students Brandao will be playing alongside at the workshop are from places such as Julliard, Northwestern University and the Eastman School of Music.

“This just shows that Southern Miss can compete with them also and that this university is a destination for great musicians also,” Bergman said.

Brandao is greatly anticipating playing with the Berlin Philharmonic.

“I feel like I’ll pack my things and go now and wait ‘til the day comes,” he said.

Brandao said he hopes to improve in his playing as well as more musical and stylistic technique from the experience.

“I’m very honored,” he said.

“For me I never thought that this would be possible.”

Dixie Darlings continue to dazzle USM Leighanne Lockhart Printz Writer Also known as the as the “Rockettes of the Gridiron,” the University of Southern Mississippi’s Dixie Darlings have been struttin’ and kickin’ since 1954.

Band director Raymond Mannoni founded the team and patterned them after the Texas Community College Kilgore Rangerettes. The result was a legendary precision jazz and kick team that lives on today as one of USM’s oldest traditions.

The Dixie Darlings are currently recruiting new members for the 2012 season. Hundreds of young women come to clinics and tryouts every year in hopes of earning a spot on this prestigious team. So, what exactly does it take to be one of these high-kicking divas in the white boots?

“An ideal Dixie Darling would be very self-disciplined and motivated,” director Tracy Smith said.

“She would have advanced dance technique, strong performance skills and a healthy appearance.”

Smith has been the team’s director since 2003 and was a Dixie Darling from 1985-1988. She said she remembers growing up watching the team and “being in awe of this fabulous group.”

Although a background in dance and training in dance technique is highly recommended, it is not always necessary.

Girls in the past have been known to come to tryouts, show potential and score well enough in performance to land them a spot on the team, Smith said. With some work and enough practice, many of these girls fully develop their skills midway through the season.

combination. Girls will be divided into groups to perform for the judges before the first cut is made.

Some technical skills required at tryouts include right and left turns, splits, high kicks, leaps, axles and stags. The girls are also taught how to do the traditional fight song routine and the strut.

The audition includes two to three rounds of cuts depending on the circumstances.

Smith said that both technique and performance ability are very important, but if she had to pick one over the other, it would be performance.

“If a girl has acceptable technique but has a stellar performance, then that is in her favor,” Smith said. “It is a lot harder to teach someone performance skills for the type of arena where we perform.”

Junior transfer student Natalie Fowler just finished her first year on the team. She said the team allowed her to easily make friends and help get her involved as a transfer student.

Fowler said, “I enjoyed being able to pride myself in doing something so traditional and being a part of the USM tradition while also doing something I en-

joyed to do - dance and perform.”

In addition to long practices and workouts throughout the week during football season, the Dixie Darlings also complete over 250 hours of community service each fall. This year the team went above and beyond and completed over 400 hours.

The girls volunteer for various causes and organizations in Hattiesburg, including Day of Dance, Forrest General Hospital visits, reading to children at local schools and holding physical activity and education programs for children at the YMCA.

“It’s a huge commitment and takes a lot of dedication and energy being on the team, but mostly it’s an opportunity to have fun upholding a legacy and representing your university in a very special way,” said advertising major and second-year captain Ashley Taber.

Anyone interested in auditioning is invited to attend a clinic on Sunday from 2 until 5 p.m. in the Payne Center. Preparation for tryouts and demonstration of skills expected will take place. The cost is $20. Audition dates for the 2012 season are set for March 24 and April 28 at 9 a.m.

Organization recruits prospective students Michelle Holowach Printz Writer Enrollment at Southern Miss wouldn’t be the same without the troupe of enthusiastic students donning golden polos and sharing their school spirit with thousands of prospective Golden Eagles.

The primary recruiting branch of the Office of Admissions, Eagle Connection is a group of student recruiters at USM dedicated to filling high school students with zeal for the university and then leading them to a college journey they won’t regret.

“Members of Eagle Connection are excited and passionate about Southern Miss and want to get others excited and passionate,” Ashley Johnston, the faculty advisor for Eagle Connection, said.

“They are leaving their footprint at USM, and are proud to have a hand in enrollment.”

Composed of 65 to 70 students, Eagle Connection is involved in a wide variety of recruiting activities, including high school college fairs, group tours of the campus, scholarship receptions, Honors Day and Black and Gold Day, which is their most popular recruiting event.

Vice President of Eagle Connection and junior information technology major Ben Knaus said the primary goal of the group is to get high school students interested in Southern Miss and to encourage them to apply at the university.

“I love recruiting students. I love hanging out with high school students and getting to mentor people,” Knaus said. “I saw Eagle Connection as a really cool opportunity because I love Southern Miss and I love helping other people out, and I thought, ‘Well, if Southern Miss helped me out, then I can help out others too.”

Eagle Connection links current students to prospective students so they can see through the eyes of somebody living the college experience what their journeys are really going to be like.

“There’s something about that student to student interaction,” Johnston said. “It adds

truth to whatever we’re telling them about what their college experience might be.”

Eagle Connection is currently receiving applications for the upcoming 2012-2013 school year, and anybody enthusiastic about sharing their Golden Eagle spirit is encouraged to apply.

“It allows you to feel like you’re giving back to the university,” Johnston said. “It’s a great way to harness energy and put it towards the goal of sharing your passion and excitement with someone else. Eagle Connection helps students to get that passion and energy out for a good cause.”

and it’s a lot of fun,” Knaus said of the class. “It’s probably the most fun class you’ll ever have at Southern Miss.”

Knaus said his favorite thing about being a part of Eagle Connection is helping Southern Miss rise to the top by recruiting the best students.

“It’s cool to talk to people that were seniors or juniors in high school who then come to Southern Miss and to see them really find their place and find their home and start really succeeding and find themselves,” Knaus said.

Knaus encourages everybody to apply for Eagle Connection and said there is nothing to lose.

“It’s a really good opportunity,” Knaus said. “You get to know a whole lot of people because usually in Eagle Connection people are from all different walks of life.

Pretty much every single type of person you see on campus is covered in Eagle Connection, so you really get to network a lot and expand your horizons and meet all the people you probably didn’t even know came here.

Eagle Connection will accept 25 to 30 applicants for the new year. The deadline to apply is Feb. 9th.

Oh Urkel. Our lovable, high water suspenders, thick rimmed glasses hero. Nowadays we would probably call Urkel a “hipster” because of his look, but Urkel was a nerd.

We can all remember Saturdays in our childhood half naked in Fruit of the Looms with a bowl of Trix watching countless episodes of Urkel trying to lay down some “Marvin Gaye and Chardonnay” with Laura.

In one memorable episode, Urkel devises a plan to win over Laura’s heart by creating “Cool Juice,” a formula to rid himself of his nerdy ways. Steve Urkel then becomes “Stefan Urkel.”

Stefan dressed cooler, talked smooth and was…a jerk.

You might be thinking to yourself, “Woah mama!” Why was Laura attracted to Stefan Urkel and not Steve Urkel?

Toward the end of the show Stefan turned back into Steve after Laura was turned off by Stefan’s narcissistic ways. And in typical TV show “Aw” fashion, our nerdy hero ended up with the girl. But the point still stands that women are attracted to jerks...for the short term. It was only when Urkel learned to balance those “Cool Juice” characteristics that he could lure Laura. As rapper Kanye West once spit, “Too many Urkels on your team / That’s why you’re Winslow.” Clever as ever, Mr. West’s point is that you won’t win with the ladies if you’re always a Steve; sometimes you’ve gotta be Stefan.

USM signs new Golden Eagles Josh Seabrook Sports Editor The Southern Miss Golden Eagles are coming off one the best seasons in team history, and they are looking to carry that momentum into the off-season. There are a few noticeable changes this season for the Eagles as Ellis Johnson replaces Larry Fedora as head football coach. The Eagles are also looking to replace the production of the large senior class that will graduate later this spring.

A strength of this past season’s team was the linebacking core, but because of graduation the Eagles were forced to look to the recruiting board to fill the holes. Johnson made it very clear that one of the main areas he wants to improve is the depleted linebacker position. Johnson referred to a conversation he had with Fedora in which they discussed the team Johnson is inheriting.

“I remember one conversation I had with Larry (Fedora), and he said, ‘I think you’re in pretty good shape, but you need to get you some line-backers,’” Johnson said. “We got depleted at linebacker due to the graduation process.”

Korey Williams was statistically one of the top players for the Eagle defense, but he missed the entire season last year with an injury. The coaching staff appealed for a medi-

cal red-shirt, but the request was denied by the NCAA. Recruits the Eagles snagged for linebacker positions include Lelland Ducksworth; C.J. Perry, Jr. and Dylan Reda. The biggest name in that group is Lelland Ducksworth from North Forrest High School. Ducksworth is 6’3’’ and 215 pounds, has good cover skills and was the No. 17 overall player in Mississippi and the No. 65 outside linebacker in the nation, according to Rivals.com.

There are several players on the list who could prove to be jewels passed over by other schools. One of the players Johnson believes could be a diamond in the rough is offensive lineman Oliver Bates from Tylertown High School. Johnson expressed great interest in what Bates brings to the table and believes he can make an impact as soon as he steps on the gridiron.

“I don’t feel we were working Oliver Bates really hard before I got here,” Johnson said. “After watching him on tape, his upside is physically is amazing and his family is tremendous. He is a wonderful young man.”

The Eagles were able to secure commitments from some of the top players in the South, and, in the case of Anthony Alford, one of the best players in the nation. Alford is the crown jewel of the class and would have been for many other schools.

sity of South Carolina and was able to build up a relationship with the dual-threat quarterback. Upon getting the job as the new USM head coach, Johnson capitalized on his relationship with Alford and the level of comfort Alford had with his former high school coach Steve Buckley, who is now part of Johnson’s staff at USM. During the winter break, Johnson was able to lock down the commitment of Alford,

who is ranked as the No. 5 dualthreat quarterback in the nation and the No. 157 recruit overall. The signing of Alford was a huge acquisition for Johnson and his staff. Not only is Alford a great football player, but he is also a great baseball player.

It is hard to rate Johnson’s first recruiting class in his first year at the helm, but only time and games will tell. Johnson was very pleased with the success of his staff on such a

short notice, as the window he had to recruit was very short due to receiving the job almost a month ago.

One thing is for sure - Johnson has the skills necessary to continue to lead the Eagles forward. With Johnson at the helm, a very experienced staff at his side, a solid recruiting class and a team that stayed intact for the most part from last season, the Golden Eagles will continue to soar to new heights.

Eagles outlast Tigers to avenge 18 loss streak Jeff Haeger Printz Writer Fans stormed the court at Reed Green Coliseum on Wednesday night following a long-awaited and dramatic 75-72 Golden Eagle victory over the Memphis Tigers.

This win against the Tigers is the first for the Golden Eagles since 2004, and it snaps what was previously an 18-game losing streak to their conference rival.

This contest was a battle for conference supremacy as both teams entered the match up boasting 6-1 conference records, sharing a two-way tie for first atop Conference USA. With Memphis in its rearview mirror, Southern Miss is now on a five-game win streak and has a stranglehold of C-USA with a 7-1 conference record and an overall mark of 20-3. Memphis is now 6-2 in conference play and sits at 15-7 overall.

The Golden Eagles had anything but a solid start to this game, as Memphis opened up a 16-4 lead early in the first half. A stout manto-man Memphis defense posed problems early and often for the Golden Eagles as they were only 1-5 from the field to start the game, while Memphis started the game by knocking down six of its first nine shots. Memphis guard Chris Crawford was a dynamic part of the hot start for the Tigers as he found his range early, converting on his first six field goal attempts and torching USM for 18 first half points on seven of 10 shooting.

The Golden Eagles managed to stay poised despite their poor start, as they clawed their way back into the game with timely shots and big plays that fired up their home crowd. Southern Miss guard LaShay Page ignited the Southern Miss offense with a crucial three pointer that reduced the Tiger lead from 12 to nine, and from there on the game did not see another double-digit lead for either team.

ble, however, as he committed three fouls in the first five minutes of the second half. This turned out to be a blessing in disguise for the Golden Eagles, as Southern Miss forward Darnell Dodson retook the floor at this juncture in the game after already contributing nine points off the bench in the first half.

This unsung hero led the Golden Eagles in scoring with 23 points, and played all but seven minutes in the entire game. The Kentucky transfer tacked on six rebounds to his sevenof-sixteen shooting performance, and most importantly, he was a perfect 9-9 from the free throw line.

Free throw shooting was the story of the game for the Golden Eagles, as they converted 24 of their 27 attempts for the game, many of them coming down the stretch helping USM secure the victory.

The second half never saw a lead of more than five points for either squad, as Southern Miss found themselves unable to pull away with the Tigers seemingly matching their every point. Southern Miss guard Neil Watson carried the team when the game in the balance as he came up with big plays time and again.

He was an efficient four-of-six from the field and converted all eight of his free throw attempts. He finished with 17 points and a team-high six assists, and the Golden Eagles were stagnant on offense without his presence on the court.

as time expired. He had burned the Golden Eagles for five three pointers up to this point in the game, but his last attempt hit only the rim, as a wild celebration at mid-court promptly ensued.

Despite surrendering a 15.2 percent differential in field goal percentage for the game, the Golden Eagles found a way to win their phenomenal bench play and offensive rebounding. The Golden Eagles outscored the Tigers 45-20 in bench points, and they outrebounded them 16-3 on the offensive boards.

Southern Miss looks to build off of this monumental win next Wednesday when head basketball coach Larry Eustachy and the Golden Eagles travel to Birmingham to take on the UAB Blazers at 7 p.m.
