Former USM athlete to start in Super Bowl A former University of Southern Mississippi student athlete will be a starting player in Super Bowl XLVI on Sunday in Indianapolis, Ind. In 2009, Michael Boley committed to the New York Giants when he
signed a five-year, $25 million contract. Boley will serve as a starting outside linebacker on Sunday when the Giants face the New England Patriots for the Lombardi Trophy. Boley is a Gadsden, Ala. native who had a successful college football career at Southern Miss. He won the Conerly Trophy in 2004, an award that is given to the best college
football player in Mississippi. Boley finished with 423 tackles, 28.5 sacks and nine forced fumbles in his college career. He was also voted as CUSA’s defensive most valuable during his last season as a Golden Eagle. In 2005, Boley signed with the Atlanta Falcons in the fifth round of the NFL draft. In a recent interview with the Chicago Tribune,
former Falcons strength coach and Chicago Bears current general manager Phil Emery said that even though Boley wasn’t chosen until the fifth round and was criticized for not playing as hard as he could have at Southern Miss, he urged the Falcons to sign him. “He’s one of the most interesting individuals I’ve ever scouted,” Emery
