Wiesenburg accepts USM provost position Justin Mitchell News Editor
On Monday, University of Southern Mississippi president Martha Saunders released a statement naming Denis Wiesenburg, vice-president for research USM, the university’s next provost. Wiesenburg will be sanctioned in the position on July 1, 2012, pending approval by the Mississippi Board of Trustees of State Institutions of Higher Learning. Wiesenburg said his provost request will be submitted to the board during their May or June meeting. Wiesenburg has been serving as interim provost since November, when previous provost Bob Lyman stepped down from his position.
“It seemed like I was a good fit for what the president needed in the plants she had in putting two major aspects of academic activity under one office,” Wiesenburg said. “I was asked to do the job permanently but in a different way than ever before by managing both academic programs and research activities out of the provost office.” President Saunders said she is confident that Wiesenburg is a good choice for the provost position. “Dr. Wiesenburg was selected as provost because of his experience and expertise and the strong support from deans and faculty,” Saunders said. “I have tremendous confidence in Dr. Wiesenburg’s ability to provide academic and research leadership to foster excellence in
teaching, research and service. He is a quintessential scholar, and he has built a reputation on solid values and integrity.”

Earlier this week, multiple reports showed University of Oregon head coach Ernie Kent as the leading candidate, but Wednesday morning an administrator vetoed Kent as the next coach. Colorado State is looking to replace Tim Miles, who left for the University of Nebraska in March. Miles led CSU to an NCAA tournament birth last season. Eustachy just finished his eighth season at Southern Miss, and he posted his 400th career win in February. In March, he was named District 11 Coach of the Year by the National Association of Basketball Coaches. The Southern Miss Golden Eagles traveled to their first NCAA Tournament since 1991 under Eustachy this year.
