Relay for Life is an event that helps communities across the globe celebrate the lives of people who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost and fight back against the disease. On Friday, April 27 the University of Southern Mississippi will host Relay for Life for the first time. The relay will begin at 6 p.m. and will continue until 6 a.m. on Saturday, April 28. Pride Field will be the venue for the event. “The previous events on campus

were community-based, but this one is strictly for the college and will provide a better college-based atmosphere with more fun,” said Brittany Compton, freshman and chair for the event. Gavin Snyder, cochair of production for the Southern Miss Relay for Life team, added that a survivor reception will begin at 6 p.m. followed by the opening ceremony at 7 p.m. A luminary ceremony will be at 10 p.m. with the closing ceremony following hours later at 6 a.m. In between the various ceremonies there will be games, entertainment and food. Snyder said that just one per-

son can make a difference when it comes to Relay for Life. “Nowhere is that more evident than with the story of the American Cancer Society Relay for Life, which began in Tacoma, Washington,” Snyder said. According to Snyder, in the mid 1980s a surgeon named Gordy Klatt from Tacoma wanted to increase the income of the local cancer society office. “He decided to personally raise money for the fight by doing something he enjoyed, and Klatt enjoyed running marathons,” Snyder said.

Chuck Scianna, president of Sim-Tex, L.P. in Waller, Texas and namesake of the new College of Business building, was named as the University of Southern Mississippi’s spring 2012 commencement speaker on Monday. Scianna is a Golden Eagle alumnus who graduated from the College of Business in 1975. He is a native of Bay Saint Louis. Scianna will give both commencement addresses at Reed Green Coliseum on May 11 at 10 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. Scianna said he was humbled when USM president Martha Saunders approached him about speaking at graduation. “I told Martha I thought she was scraping the bottom of the barrel,” Scianna said jokingly. Sim-Tex imports pipe goods that are used for oil and gas production all over the world. The company is also responsible for providing domestic sources for a product known as Green Tube. Sim-Tex brings the product to Houston, where the wholesale finished product is then mass distributed. Scianna said that his education at USM helped aid in his current success. “Southern Miss gave me the education and training I needed to do a lot of things that I do today,” Scianna said. “Education is like going to the gym - the more you exercise your mind, the better results you get.” Scianna donated $5 million to USM’s “Building Better Business” campaign last year, which will

aid in funding the university’s new College of Business, which will be named Scianna Hall. He also vowed to match any further pledge made to the campaign by May 31 up to $1 million. “Southern Miss has an excellent business school,” Scianna said. “In the 1970s when I attended, it was one of the best in the country. When I moved to Texas, people did not think much of Southern Miss. They were proven wrong.” Scianna said he will keep his speech short and simple. “I’ve got a couple of quick pointers to get students through life,” Scianna said. “But I know when I graduated, all I cared about was getting out of that hot gown.” Scianna joked about having to wear a gown as well. “I wanted to wear a Tommy Bahama shirt, shorts and flip flops,” he said. Scianna will also be present at the university’s Scianna Hall ground-breaking on May 10 at 10:30 a.m. next to the Trent Lott Center, where the new College of Business will be built.
