The Big Event began a few years ago at Texas A&M University and has become an event that college campuses have picked up all over the United States and internationally.

“It is kind of neat because college students all around are starting this event where they are giving back to the communities where their universities exist,” Chilcutt said. “People see how much it leaves an impact.”

Campus restoration moves forward Kirstie Lowery Printz Reporter

Just two months after an EF-4 tornado hit Hattiesburg Feb. 10, 2013, plans to reconstruct the campus were already underway.

After much of The University of Southern Mississippi was damaged during last year’s tornado, Physical Plant,Tree Management Task Force, Department of Biology and NeelSchaffer, Inc. began creating The Front Campus Landscape Restoration and Enhancement Plan in order to not only fix what had been damaged, but also to make improvements.

Among the numerous locations that are involved in the plan is the historical Lake Byron. According to the USM Foundation’s website, this area was the most heavily damaged by the tornado. After the debris left from the tornado

had been removed, university officials discovered that the lake was deeper than they had originally thought.

As a result of the discovery, sand was added to the lake in order to create a soft, smooth surface on the bottom, as well as create a new depth of approximately six feet. Also, the perimeter of the lake was expanded in an attempt to make shelf-like areas such as habitats

for small fish. Another reason for the expansion is to allow the lake to sustain biodiversity.

Michelle Shinall, assistant director of marketing and campus relations at Physical Plant, said upcoming changes to Lake Byron will include improvements to the spillway and a fountain being added to the lake to curb the growth of algae. Also, Shinall said accent ground lighting will be

added along the sidewalks that surround the lake.

Shinall believes these improvements will make the campus more appealing while also creating more safety for local people.

“The renovated spillway will assist with storm water runoff for the entire campus, which will help keep the city of Hattiesburg from being overwhelmed during a heavy storm,” Shinall said.

The university website informs visitors that there are many different phases of the plan. The upcoming stages of this plan include the Hardy West and East Phases, the Marsh Phase, the Rose Garden Phase and the Highway 49 Phase. Past stages of the plan include the Gateway and District Phases.

Zoo receives two tigers from Los Angeles Zoo Destiny Reynolds Printz Reporter

The Hattiesburg Zoo has recently welcomed two new members into its family: the Sumatran tiger brothers Kuasa and Cinta.

Rick Taylor, executive director of the Hattiesburg Convention Commission, said the zoo has had a long history of showcasing tigers as one of its primary exhibits. The tiger is even the logo animal for the zoo. When the two Sumatran tigers could no longer remain

at the Los Angeles Zoo where they were born, the decision was made for them to reside in the Hattiesburg Zoo. “With the construction of the new tiger holding building, we are able to participate more in the conservation of endangered species such as the

“Our record of great animal care made us attractive to the (Los Angeles) Zoo who asked if we could care for the male tiger brothers, Cinta and Kuasa, who had grown too (old) to remain in the tiger family unit at the (Los Angeles) Zoo. We had the facility, the capable staff and the desire.”

The new additions to the tiger exhibit hold a lot of significance for the zoo as a safe habitat for endangered species. “It continues with our tradition of providing our community and our state an opportunity to view and learn about the many interesting animals found on planet Earth,” Taylor said. “It also helps, through conservation, to preserve this very unique species.”

Many zoogoers have been asking about the fate of the Siberian tiger named Tigger that once dominated the tiger exhibit at the zoo. Taylor assures patrons that Tigger will remain at the zoo and will still be a part of the exhibit, though she will be kept in another area, as Kuasa and Cinta are a bit too rambunctious to be penned with the elderly tiger.

Visitors seem to be taking to the new exhibit kindly. “It’s nice to see a little exposure for Hattiesburg,” said Joseph Wambold, a zoo visitor who checked out the new tiger exhibit.

This is not the only expansion in store for the zoo. Coming this April is the addition of the Asbury Discovery Center, the zoo’s new education center.

“While we cannot provide details on this very special building, we are excited to hint that future visitors should gear up for a wild journey through imagination and curiosity,” Taylor said.

Taylor and other zoo staff greatly encourage students, faculty and other Hattiesburg residents to visit.

“There is no better place to learn about our big, beautiful world and the exotic animals that make it so interesting than at the Hattiesburg Zoo,” Taylor said. “In addition to an exciting and fun-filled time, visitors will leave with a greater appreciation for the need to protect these wild species for the future.”

Kuasa and Cinta are assimilating into their new home quite nicely and are basking in their fame. Anyone wishing to see the tiger duo can stop by the Hattiesburg zoo anytime from Thursday to Sunday between the hours of 1 and 4 p.m.

Say ‘I do’ to good wedding manners Mary Beth Wolverton Printz Reporter

Ladies and gentlemen, prepare yourselves. Wedding season is officially upon us. With the beginning of spring comes an explosion of taffeta, baby’s breath and lace. Invitations to your friends’ weddings have been filling up the mailbox, and now the big day is just around the corner. So what does that mean for you, a guest at the wedding?

Here are just a few tips to help you survive the season.

Respond. Planning a wedding takes a lot of effort. Help out your friends and reply promptly to any RSVPs. Food has to be ordered, chairs have to be set at tables and favors have to be prepared, so an accurate guest count is necessary.

No matter if your friend invites you through a Facebook message, asks you to come over text or mails you a save-the-date and invitation with a plus one, be sure to tell the couple if you will or will not be in attendance. It can be easy to forget to send in that reply card, so check your availability

immediately and respond as quickly as possible.

Dress appropriately. Be mindful of any themes or location-specific attire, such as a beach wedding or a laid-back country wedding to which you can wear jeans.

Most of the time, any specific attire preferences will be noted on the invitation. For spring and early summer weddings, pay attention to the weather. If you are attending a wedding that will last into the evening, you may want to bring a sweater. White and ivory are colors generally reserved for the bride, and while black may be appropriate for a night wedding, choose colorful clothes for morning or afternoon weddings. Bright colors will also show up well in photos and will celebrate the season.

Consider whether or not you want to bring a present. Presents are a traditional part of weddings, but for college students, “tradition” does not always apply.

A college student might have four or five weddings to go to over a period of three months, so $30 or more per present adds up. If you are worried about costs, consider

going in with a couple friends to buy those medium-priced items that the couple registered for, or consider putting together a thoughtful, yet inexpensive gift, such as a photo album filled with nostalgic pictures.

Find out if the bride and groom have special desires for technology and social media use during the ceremony or reception.

A growing trend among young couples is to ask guests to use individualized hashtags when they post wedding photos to media such as Twitter, Facebook and Instagram so that the couple can easily locate these pictures later. #jillandmitchgethitched is much simpler to find than one picture out of 100 on your Instagram feed. Conversely, many couples are beginning to request that you either turn off or turn in your phones during the ceremony.

“The hottest topic in wedding circles this year seems to be whether to request, remind or even require that guests go cold turkey on technology during the event,” said Bruce Feiler of the New York Times. If technology

and social media usage are important to the bride and groom, try to humor them.

Finally, unless you are 99.9 percent sure you are in a reallife romance movie and need to be with the man/woman you love at all costs, do not object. Whomever you oh-sodesperately love did not plan an entire wedding just so you could wreck it. In the movies, objecting is sweet. In real life, you are going to get punched, and I am betting it will be the bride whose fist hits your face.

Kiesha Ellis, a senior communication studies major, had this to say about the subject: “You know they ask if anyone has any objections to the couple being wed? Please speak now or forever hold your peace? It is unAmerican to object,” she said. “It is simply tradition.”

Bottom line, you should keep in mind that this is the bride and groom’s special day. You should do everything within your power as a guest to help make it special. After all, they invited you for a reason.

Indie rock band Nothing invents niche Bradley Presson

stands out from, and yet harkens back to, genre pioneers like My Bloody Valentine and Slowdive. The band blends ubiquitous genre tropes such as fuzzy distorted guitar tones and obscured vocals with their hardcore punk roots and a slight postpunk tinge to create a sound and atmosphere all their own.

Musically, the band is incredibly dynamic and switch from dreamy and drones to Certain records practically melancholy demand to be played during pummeling climaxes of noise specific times. For example, very fluidly, often doing this The Beach Boys’ early several times within one albums are the epitome of song. Opener “Hymn to the summertime music whereas Pillory” is a fine example gritty New York hip-hop feels of this dynamic range, with wrong in any context other its quiet hazy beginning leading into crushingly huge than freezing winter nights.

that is present throughout the album, yet does not make you want to put on an older band instead.

Nothing also manages to stay musically diverse throughout “Guilty of Everything.” Songs such as “Bent Nail” and “Get Well” meld the band’s shoegaze sound with their punk roots and are the most energetic songs on the album.

In other places on the album, the band chooses to take a more ethereal route, and songs like “Beat Around the Bush” and “Somersault” are content to remain mostly shapeless waves of droning guitars and vocals held together by the band’s strong rhythm section.

The album is coherent and unified despite these differences in musical style and mood due to Nothing’s consistently dark and nostalgic atmosphere and the band’s ability to contort their influences to fit their distorted and dreamy style.

A potential issue that some listeners who are not familiar with the shoegaze genre might face with “Guilty of Everything” is that, like many albums in the genre, the vocals are not very prominent and the lyrics might be hard to catch as a result.

Vocalist Domenic Palermo’s vocals often amount to little more than a melodious whisper that is hidden within the droning waves of the music.

This vocal decision pays off for the band though, as the lush nature of Palermo’s voice adds to the hazy and dreamlike atmosphere of the album.

As for the lyrics, once understood they are rewarding.

Through cryptic yet beautiful

imagery, Palermo muses on love, nostalgia and isolation through a tender yet distrusting view of the world. This is evident as he expresses a heartbreaking desire for escape through his lyrics on “Get Well” where he laments, “there’s gotta be a way to escape from the rain, but I can’t find it.”

“Guilty of Everything” is an album that masterfully toes the line between old ideas and new ones while maintaining its own voice.

For rainy nights that demand escape, Nothing’s debut is a stellar getaway that manages to balance ethereal soundscapes of lush drones with powerful choruses and memorable melodies.

New film does not diverge from book Kristy Shelley Printz Reporter

I read “Divergent” in January.

It was so good that I finished it in 24 hours and as soon as I was done, I bought the second book of the trilogy, “Insurgent.” That one was so good that I proceeded to read it in less than 24 hours and immediately bought the third book, “Allegiant.”

I absolutely loved the trilogy. I give them five out of five possible stars. But the movie? I’m going to give it a four out of five.

Let me preface this by saying I enjoyed the movie. If I hadn’t read the books, I would’ve thought it was flawless. But, I did read the books, so of course I’m finding some things the movie didn’t quite do justice.

First of all, I would like to say that I think the movie did an excellent job of following the events in the book. There wasn’t anything thrown in there

that didn’t actually happen in the book, with the exception of some dialogue.

But overall, each scene in the movie was a scene from the book and I commend the directors on that. They didn’t stray far from the storyline just because it was a movie and that’s awesome.

However, they did a pretty bad job of leaving some crucial parts out of the movie. In the book, you get a pretty strong sense of the bond and relationship between the characters.

In the movie, you don’t really see that bond at all.

For instance, when Al committed suicide, in the movie it seems pretty random but in the books it made perfect sense.

The book explains how Al had been feeling homesick and depressed. He wasn’t doing well during his training in Dauntless and he seemed constantly disappointed in himself. He and Tris had become really good friends throughout the initiation

process until he helped attempt to kill her.

When she wouldn’t forgive him, he killed himself. But it is necessary to know all of his struggles to know why he took his own life.

The same thing goes for Christina and Will. You see them grow and really start to like each other in the book. They were a trio of friends; well, Al was part of it too while he was still around. So

when Tris killed Will, you knew in the book how hard it was for her, not only because of her friendship with Will but because of her friendship with Christina.

In the movie, it was still sad and you felt for her, but you didn’t get to see the bond that she shared with him to really understand how sad it actually was.

Also, she and Four in the book have a much more explainable relationship. In the movie, you see them have a relationship, but it doesn’t really develop in the same way it did in the book. And it doesn’t really make sense how one minute he’s stern with her and the next he’s making out with her.

In the books, though, you actually see their relationship unfold and understand why they trust each other and are so into each other.

Also, the movie portrays Tris as very brave. And don’t get me wrong, she definitely is. But, in the book she struggles a lot within herself. In the movie, she is just

brave and fearless and can do anything. In the books, her mind is a lot more timid and she second guesses a lot of her actions. You don’t see that uneasy person at all in the movie.

Same with Peter. In the movie, he’s annoying and no one likes him. He’s a lot more than just a nuisance and an aggravating 16-year-old in the book; he’s someone who makes your stomach churn. But the movie didn’t show that very well – they just made him a little unlikeable.

That’s enough examples to back up my case. Bottom line is, they did a great job of showing the storyline and events happening in the book, but they did a mediocre job of showing the relationship between characters.

Overall, though, I thought it was a great movie. And of course I’ll see it again. But I definitely recommend everyone read the books to really get the full experience of what is going on in “Divergent.”

I don’t know why everyone is freaking about the whole “selfie” craze. I mean, I could understand why you would freak out about the word “selfie” being added to the Associated Press stylebook – because yes, that did happen – but this has been a thing for a long time now.

Most college students take selfies literally every day. I

constantly get selfie Snapchats and see selfie Instagram photos. I mean, let’s be honest, I’m guilty of this trend.

I think the only thing people are hyped up about is the fact that we now have a name for it. Instead of saying, “I’m taking a picture,” we now say, “I’m taking a selfie.”

And that’s the thing: we take selfies for literally everything. #beachselfie, #roadtripselfie, #selfie-cause-I-can, #selfie-causeI’m-bored. We take selfies because

we look really awesome and then we turn around and take selfies to show how tragic we are.

I am all for selfies. But, I think there are a few rules we should all follow when taking and posting them.

Rule #1 – Don’t post too many selfies in a day. I mean, really one should be the limit unless you’re doing something really cool like meeting President Barack Obama or Ellen DeGeneres.

Rule #2 - #selfie-cause-I-can and #selfie-cause-I’m-bored-arejust-annoying. Don’t just take a selfie to take a selfie. Make it have some sort of meaning.

Rule #3 – If you take a selfie every day, during the same time, then bye. We don’t need to see your #workselfie, #lunchselfie or #classselfie every single freaking day.

Rule #4 – Have a little selfpride and dignity. Don’t post your #drunkselfie everywhere or send it to your friends list on Snapchat.

Just send it to the few friends who will laugh about it.

Rule #5 – Don’t put your life story, song lyrics or a deep quote on your selfie. Just no. Like, a picture of you in the car should not have, “broken up deep inside, but you won’t get to see the tears I’ve cried, behind these hazel eyes,” or, “letting go isn’t the end of the world, it’s the beginning

of a new life.” I just cringed thinking about it.

Rule #6 – It’s always okay to take a selfie when something with your appearance changes (i.e. haircut, nose ring, etc.) or if it’s an important event or holiday (Christmas day, first day of school, Miley Cyrus concert, snow day or when Connie Cones opens, etc.)

Oh, and now we have a song for it. And don’t even pretend like that song isn’t at least half of you when you’re at Brewsky’s or DeRe on a Thursday night.

I’ll spare everyone the lyrics, but there are some directly related to selfies that need to be addressed. So here they are, with my commentary.

“Let me take a selfie.”

(And by a selfie, you mean like 15 and then you’ll debate about which one looks the best and ask for help a million times.)

Burdeaux’s walk-off wins series over UTSA Coming off a season-high for runs and hits in its 18-2 win over the University of LouisianaMonroe, the Southern Miss Golden Eagles won three of their last four games and looked to continue its winning ways as they faced The University of Texas at San Antonio in a three-game home series this weekend.

On Friday, starting pitcher Christian Talley paved the way with a complete game for the Golden Eagles as they defeated the Roadrunners, 6-2, in the opening game of the series at Pete Taylor Park.

Leading off the bottom of the first, junior infielder Connor Barron blasted a double down the right-field line off the first pitch from starting Roadrunner pitcher Brock Hartson. A sacrifice bunt by Michael Sterling allowed Tim Lynch to bring in Barron on a groundout.

In the second inning, the Roadrunners (15-7, 2-2) knotted the game at 1-1 with an RBI double from Mike Warren.

However, in the third, a failed pickoff error by the Roadrunners led to Sterling’s RBI groundout.

The Golden Eagles added two more runs in the fourth with hits from Nick Dawson and Matt Durst, making the lead 4-1.

The Roadrunners fought hard in the fifth, cutting the deficit with an RBI groundout from C.J. Pickering, but Southern

Miss scored in the bottom of the inning on Mason Robbins’ tworun triple.

For the game, Talley struck-out a career-high 12 players, limited the UTSA to five hits and just six base runners. It was the third time this season a Southern Miss pitcher struck-out at least 10 batters in a game this year.

“He threw everything for strikes and covered nine innings on 101 pitches,” said Southern Miss coach Scott Berry. “He was really outstanding.”

On Saturday afternoon, the Roadrunners snapped the Golden Eagles three-game winning streak, winning 4-1 in the second game of the series.

Golden Eagle pitcher Conor Fisk held the Roadrunners to three hits and two walks with three strikeouts through sevenplus innings; however, he began the eighth inning with a leadoff walk. He was replaced by Jake Winston who allowed a John Welborn single for UTSA followed by an error that could have been an inning-ending double play for Southern Miss, but UTSA tacked on a run.

UTSA then collected RBI singles from RJ Perucki and Tony Ramirez, sandwiched by a Mike Warren bases-loaded walk to round up the scoring for the Roadrunners.

The Golden Eagles’ bench outscored Missouri’s 21-6 and outrebounded them 13-5.

For the game, USM shot 23-54 (43 percent) from the field and 9-23 (39 percent) from behind the arc. Missouri shot just 17-43 (39 percent) from the field and 7-14 (50 percent) from deep.

While Missouri was more efficient from behind the threepoint line, the Golden Eagles were able to hit them when they mattered most. With USM up 55-50 with 8:05 remaining in the game, Brown hit a three from the corner off a feed from Watson.

On the following possession, Watson hit another three-pointer from the other corner off a Jerrold Brooks pass.

“Anytime we can get a win and get to a place where our teammates can see their family, then that makes us fight that much harder in games and at practice,’’ Watson said.

UTSA reliever Wesley Cox threw two innings, grabbing the victory for UTSA and improving to 4-1 on the season.

Matt Durst was able to extend his team-best hitting streak to 10 games, earning two hits on the afternoon.

In the rubber match, the Golden Eagles scored six runs over the last three innings after trailing 8-4 at the end of the fourth, including a walk-off home run by Dylan Burdeaux to defeat the Roadrunners 10-9 Sunday afternoon.

The Roadrunners (16-8, 3-3) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first with second baseman Jesse Baker hitting a RBI single, allowing Horacio Correa to score.

Before the end of the first inning, Tim Lynch hit an RBI single, scoring Barron to give the Golden Eagles to cut the lead to one.

Southern Miss tied the game 2-2 in the second inning before

trailing again at the end of the third inning after UTSA third baseman RJ Perucki blasted an RBI single to left field.

In the fourth inning, UTSA outscored USM 5-2. Roadrunner centerfield John Welborn reached on a fielder’s choice, advancing Mitchell Matulia to third base and allowing a runner to score.

Then, Baker hit an RBI single and Perucki hit an RBI double, giving the Roadrunners two more runs and increasing the lead to 8-4.

In the seventh, the Roadrunners converted on a double steal that scored Perucki to make the lead 9-4.

by Lynch and Robbins cut the deficit to 9-6 by the end of the seventh.

Barron hit a two-run homer to the right field in the eighth inning, tying the game 8-8 before going into the final inning.

The Golden Eagles trailed 9-8 going into the bottom of the ninth but freshman Dylan Burdeaux hit a game-winning, two-run homer off of relief pitcher Matt Simms to give Southern Miss the victory. It was Burdeaux’s second home run of the season.

Connor Barron and Nick Dawson led the team in hits with three followed by Mason Robbins and Burdeaux with two apiece.

Luke Lowery, the seventh pitcher for Southern Miss in the game, improved to 1-0 after registering two outs on a double play in the top of the ninth while Simms dropped to 2-2 after allowing four runs (two earned) on four hits and a walk with five strikeouts over the final 2 2/3 innings.

Southern Miss ( 12-12, 4-2) will go on six-game road span starting Tuesday against Ole Miss at Trustmark Park in Pearl, Miss.

Game time is set for 6:30 p.m.

If USM can go on the road and beat Minnesota, they would advance to the semifinals and play at Madison Square Garden in New York City. Minnesota (22-13) topped Saint Mary’s 63-55 Sunday to make it to the third round and are the no. 1 seed in Region 3.

USM will have to contain 5’9” junior point guard Deandre Mathieu in order to win. Mathieu is shooting over 50 percent from the field, 46 percent from three and averages 4.3 assists per game.

It will certainly be a tough game for the Golden Eagles as the Mathieu-led Golden Gophers have beaten three ranked opponents this season, all at home. The game will be played Tuesday at 8 p.m. at Williams Arena.
