Southern Miss to compete in CBI tournament

BY ANDREW ABADIE | EXECUTIVE EDITOR Southern Miss head coach Doc Sadler said after the team’s loss to Western Kentucky in the semifinal round of the Conference USA tournament that he had hoped for his team to have another opportunity in the postseason.

“Hopefully, that’s not the last game that this team plays; if it’s not then we’ll be better the next time we play,” Sadler said after the loss to WKU. “We were a laughing stock for maybe a while but I think we’re back to where people respect us.”

The Golden Eagles received that opportunity and will head to the postseason for the first time since its vacated 2014 NIT trip

and play in the Roman College Basketball Invitational (CBI).

“This team deserves the opportunity to keep playing,” Sadler said on Monday. “You’ve got five seniors in this program that have given a lot, and they wanted to continue to play. Sometimes seniors are ready for it to end but this group isn’t. I’m excited that we get to go up there. Anytime you play in these games, you have to hope that your team is excited to play because that what comes down to it, and I think we will be.”

-Letter to the EditorDear Editor, Steve Irwin’s charisma cannot disguise the fact that he made his name by harassing wildlife. His death was genuinely sad, but while he was still alive, PETA did not shy away from criticizing his mistreatment of animals—such as invading their homes to provoke and disturb them and dragging frightened animals onto talk shows for publicity.

So when Google recently posted a “doodle” glorifying Irwin’s systematic harassment of animals, PETA was compelled to speak out against the harmful message it sent. As the release of Leaving Neverland makes clear, death doesn’t magically absolve celebrities of wrongdoing—even those who were lauded during their lifetimes.

Irwin’s notorious television program showed him invading animals’ natural habitats and agitating, harassing, upsetting and disturbing them in the process. He also subjected animals to the stress of public appearances, including taking them on television talk shows—a loud, confusing and unsettling experience for animals who naturally shun human contact.

Although Irwin often spoke of the importance of animal and habitat conservation, his actions contradicted his words.

By barging into animals’ homes, grabbing and wrestling them (always against their will), and using them as props, he encouraged impressionable viewers, including children, to invade animals’ space and to treat living beings as playthings.

Experts, including the world-renowned marine explorer Jean-Michel Cousteau, have agreed that his tactics were more disruptive than educational. After Irwin’s death, Cousteau noted that Irwin would “interfere with nature, jump on animals, grab them, hold them, and have this very, very spectacular, dramatic way of presenting things. Of course, it goes very well on television. It sells, it appeals to a lot people, but I think it’s very misleading. You don’t touch nature, you just look at it.”

Others shared this view. In an op-ed published in The Guardian following Irwin’s death, Australian writer and noted feminist Germaine Greer observed, “What Irwin never seemed to understand was that animals need space. The one lesson any conservationist must labour to drive home is that

habitat loss is the principal cause of species loss. There was no habitat, no matter how fragile or finely balanced, that Irwin hesitated to barge into, trumpeting his wonder and amazement to the skies. There was not an animal he was not prepared to manhandle. Every creature he brandished at the camera was in distress.”

While Irwin built his career on agitating wildlife who were minding their own business, PETA exists to end speciesism and cruelty, to ensure that all living beings’ interests are given the consideration they deserve and to propel the conversation about animal rights forward. A single, 280-character tweet can’t possibly encapsulate all the intricacies of any issue, but we use every means available to ensure that animals’ rights are respected. This is a vital effort when the choices that people make—such as what they eat or how they choose to entertain ourselves—are a matter of life and death for countless animals.

PETA also provides hands-on help to desperate animals in impoverished communities surrounding our Sam Simon Center headquarters in Norfolk, Virginia. Last year alone, we helped more than 25,000 animals from more than 250 cities, and spent more than $2,300,000 on companion-animal services locally. Our fleet of mobile clinics has spayed and neutered more than 161,000 animals at no or low cost to their guardians since 2001, preventing countless more from being born, only to end up on the streets, in shelters, or neglected and unloved.

Every year, the majority of animals helped by PETA’s local program are sterilized or provided with veterinary care before being returned to their guardians. PETA is proud to offer end-of-life services, free of charge, for sick and dying animals whose guardians can’t afford to pay for euthanasia at a veterinary clinic. We offer a peaceful end to suffering

for animals who are elderly, feral, sick, dying, aggressive, or otherwise unadoptable. When adoptable animals come our way, we find them excellent homes or transfer them to hightraffic shelters for a chance at adoption.

Just as true conservationists respect animals by giving them their space and privacy, true animal advocates roll up their sleeves and do what’s needed to prevent and end needless suffering. PETA is proud to use every means available and work on every front to bring us closer to a day when all animals are treated with the respect, compassion and dignity they deserve.

Hattiesburg library celebrates women’s history JESSICA FIELDS PRINTZ REPORTER

n celebration of Women’s History Month, The Library of Hattiesburg teamed up with The League of Women Pine Belt Voters to host Journey to the 19th Amendment on Wednesday, March 13.

The event highlighted the importance of the 19th Amendment and how it changed history for women.

The amendment was added to the United States Constitution in 1920 which granted men and women equal voting rights. The amendment states that the right of citizens to vote “shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex.”

Associate Director of the Library of Hattiesburg Christina Keiphe, explained how the program began.

“During one of our Friends of The Library meetings, our discussion was focused on programs planning, and Women’s History Month came up,” Keipher said.”We get excited when there are opportunities to have a series of programs around a central relevant topic.”

The Library of Hattiesburg wanted this event to not only educate the public about the amendment but also to celebrate the upcoming 100th anniversary of it.

“Soon after that meeting, I received an email from the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) offering to send us a pop-up exhibit titled, Rightfully Hers to help celebrate the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment. We said ‘Yes!’ I then began looking for programming that would highlight the 19th Amendment. This led me to the League of Women’s Voters and to our local chapter,” Keipher said.

“When the library requested we speak on this issue that is so relevant and important to our League we were honored to be part of the Library’s Women’s History Month,” Ciraldo said.

Ciraldo said she hopes programs such as these will help the public understand that women’s rights are human rights.

“We are hoping people will understand more fully the importance of ensuring that all citizens receive equal rights,” Ciraldo said.

The Centennial Chair for the League of Women Voters Mississippi Patricia Cuza was selected to speak at the program. She focused on the aspect that racism still played a vital role in the path to gender equality during this time.

Adrienne Graham, a guest at the event, said she was upset when she learned about this aspect.

“What was very sad to learn that I did not know was that the early members of the women’s movement shunned women of color [African Americans] for fear of political fall out,” said Graham.

Keipher said people are learning to not take

what they know about certain past events at face value.

“One factor Ms. Cuza stressed was that many people know the highlights of the 19th Amendment, but few know the history,”Keipher said. “Time only permitted a capsule full of history to be presented, but it was truly an eyeopener. It’s quite intriguing and begs for further study.”

The next discussion celebrating the library’s Women’s History Month programming is scheduled for Wednesday, March 20 at 6 p.m.

Annual Saint Patrick’s Day Pub Crawl raises money for cause CALEB MCCLUSKEY ASSISTANT NEWS EDITOR

he second annual Saint Patrick’s Day Pub Crawl took participants to a plethora of Hattiesburg drinking establishments to celebrate with beer and treasure hunting. Starting at local brewery Southern Prohibition and moving to the mainstay businesses of Front Street Bar, Fairley’s Wings and More, the Porter and the Shop Downtown, the crawl ended with a block party at Blu Jazz Café.

The pub crawl took place March 16 starting at 3 p.m. and chugged on into 7 p.m. The Hattiesburg Junior Chamber hosted the crawl to raise money for the city of Hattiesburg to purchase wire covers to go over the cords at live events such as Live at Five, according to the program manager for JCI Miranda Williams.

“We noticed that when they have events at Town Square Park, you have a difficult time if you are in a wheelchair rolling over the cords and it is also a hazard for anyone walking because you can trip over the cords,” Williams said. “We’ve taken a community event and turned it into a fundraiser to help the community.”

The event cost participants $25 to get signed up, and receive a t-shirt made by the Shop Downtown. They could also participate at $20 without a shirt. With 52 participants, JCI raised $733 compared to $450 raised with between 20 and 30 participants last year. “[The turn out] is pretty good,” The Shop Downtown owner Heath Kleinke

said. “We actually burned the screens setting them up this morning, and we are printing on demand.”

Heath Kleinke said he wants to make a spot of pub crawling with tokens that amount to real-world cash that can be turned in to the shop like a gift card. They currently have $5 tokens, but Klienke said they would make different amounts if the tokens are well-received.

“Hopefully we can do more pub crawls in the future—not just one every now and then but one a month,” Kleinke said.

“We could have the bigger ones two or three times a year kind of like the Super Bowl.”

Kleinke said he has been working on pub crawl maps for Hattiesburg. He said the reason why these crawls have and will gain more popularity is due to the Hattiesburg open container law Major Toby Barker worked on called the “togo cup bill” which allows patrons to carry alcoholic beverages outside of bars around Hattiesburg downtown district.

One participant utilizing this bill for the pub crawl was director of sales and marketing at the Indigo Hotel Kelsey Barrett. This was her first time attending this specific pub crawl.

“Two is nothing. We are going to be truckin’ along. I’m going to make it [to the end of the crawl],” Barrett said. At the time of the interview, Barrett had only two beers but vowed at least one more at each of the five businesses participating.

“We were just looking something to do on Saint Patrick’s Day slash Saturday,” Barrett said gesturing toward her two friends. “I’m having a blast.”

Irish Italian Festival unites community ALYSSA BASS

NEWS/FEATURE EDITOR t. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church hosted the 18th annual Irish Italian Festival on the church grounds from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturday, March 16 after mass.

People of all ages gathered for food, games, an art show, a silent auction and live music to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day. Chairman of the Irish Italian Festival Kim Busche has attended every festival since its origin, beginning her service to the church as a lead cook and then becoming the chairman during the second festival.

“The priest asked me, and usually when a priest asks you to do something, you do it. It’s just like when a minister or priest from any church asks, you step up. I enjoy this kind of stuff,” Busche said. “When they asked me, they knew I had knowledge about large groups of people moving around, and that’s why I’m doing it.”

Busche said about 200 volunteers help run the festival and her favorite part of the festival was its power to unite people in the Hattiesburg community.

“We have groups that come together for different reasons. I like the fact that those who volunteer get to know new people, new members of the church who have never volunteered before all of a sudden here they are. You get to see talents.

That’s the biggest thing in the church. God gives everybody talents, and we want you to use them.

And we get to see some new talents in people who didn’t know they could do those things.”

“The process was looking at a lot of pictures at previous altars,” Diaz said. “They’ve been doing this for 18 years, so it was kind of nerve-wracking.

I’m a Puerto Rican girl trying to impress a whole bunch of Italians and Irish people and parishioners here. People have stopped by and taken pictures and told me how pretty it was, so I guess they liked it.”

Diaz described the parishioners as her family.

“Being a Catholic all my life, I had never been to a church that welcomed me and my family with open arms. I was impressed. Once that happened

[five years ago], I said, ‘I think we’re going to like it here,’” Diaz said.

“You get the community to come out and come together. We’ve got people from all faiths, all walks of life here to enjoy themselves, so we try to provide a good time for everybody to come together, and I think that’s the best part,” Busche said.

Data imaging specialist in the Registrar Office at Southern Miss Maria Englert volunteered at the art show held in the education building.

Englert has been coming to the festival since the beginning.

People from the community submitted familyappropriate art before spring break for sale and just for show. Englert said they would like to have more participation from college students in the future.

“We have a hard time getting the student art because it’s spring break,” Englert said. “We would love to have student art in the future, and we’re always willing to work with students if they want to drop it off before the break. But by the time we start putting the word out for the festival, it’s usually getting close to midterms, so we don’t have much student participation, unfortunately.”

The art pieces were all made by Hattiesburg artists. Painted ceramic cups, acrylic and oil paintings and pencil drawings were all on display.

Some were on sale for as low as $5 and as high as $1000.

The art show was named after Don Hegwood, a past member of the church and previous head of the art show, who died in September 2016.

When guests walked into the art show, they immediately saw a sign honoring Hegwood that described him as “instrumental in the formation of the Welcoming Newcomers Ministry” and “an enthusiastic supporter and writer.”

A senior political science major LaurenHunter Gaudet attended the festival with her family, a tradition she has upheld for several years. Although Gaudet is not a member of St. Thomas, she enjoys coming every year.

“I think for this festival, it’s not just St. Thomas.

It’s definitely a Hattiesburg festival,” Gaudet said.

“I really love the culture of St. Patrick’s Day, and this festival is always very fun,” Gaudet said.

“Most of these people aren’t Irish or Italian, but they all come together for this holiday.”

Thirsty Hippo prepares for Hub City Madness KARIGAN TEER PRINTZ REPORTER

rom Friday, March 29 until Sunday, March 31, the Thirsty Hippo will host the fifth annual Hub City Madness. Presented by various local businesses, the three-day music event will consist of 33 bands and musicians from Hattiesburg and beyond.

According to the Hub City Madness Facebook page, “A group of musicians from Hattiesburg had a vision to create an epic underground music party where they could rock out to a variety of local music for one weekend a year. Madness began as a mostly rock show with two power-fists full of bands.

It has transformed into one massive, multigenre, live local music blowout!”

The executive director of Downtown Music Media, one of the official sponsors of the event, Amanda Kyrié said she has been attending the event since 2016.

“This will be my fourth Madness out of the five. Every year, there are new and old bands showcased. Everyone shows up, and it’s just a huge party,” Kyrié said. “There has never been as many bands as there will be this year—33 bands over three days is incredible for an underground show.”

Kyrié said Downtown Music Media will have a significant presence at the event with photographers, videographers, writers and Street Team members who write reviews or help sell merchandise.

Kyrié regularly attends live shows in Hattiesburg and praised Hattiesburg’s diversity in music.

“The music industry in Hattiesburg is always evolving. We have so many talented musicians that live here. There is always a live show to attend, and you can find just about any genre or music culture here,” Kyrié said.

Hattiesburg shoegaze band Goth Dad will be one of the 33 acts, and bassist Colin Cameron mentioned the band’s excitement for their performance.

“This is our first year participating. We’ve all collectively attended Hub City Madness the past couple of years, so we’re pretty stoked to play,” Cameron said.

Cameron said he is looking forward to the diversity of genres that are going to perform.

“There are so many good bands across the whole spectrum of genres. We are looking forward to playing with so many of our pals at one time,” Cameron said.

Psychedelic surf rock band Wild Frames performed at last year’s Hub City Madness, and vocalist Leeann Rogers said that the event is unique because it brings everyone’s fans together to experience new music.

“It is a great cross-pollination on Hattiesburg music. The fact that so many different types of people and musicians so easily get along, respect and appreciate one another is a very ‘Hattiesburg’ thing,” Rogers said.

Marie said her band is looking forward to this Hub City Madness because it will be their first performance of 2019.

Every act for this year’s Hub City Madness will take place at the Thirsty Hippo.

Admission for the event will be charged at the door on the day of the show. Wristbands will be sold at $20 for the entire weekend, $15 for two days or $10 for one day.

Mass Communication dept. brings students to SXSW MARISSA HASS PRINTZ REPORTER

uring Spring Break, Southern Miss and Butler University students attended SXSW, a 10-day interactive, media and film festival located in Austin, Texas. While there, they attended movie premieres, networked with professionals, attended panel discussions and learned about innovation in the entertainment and tech industries.

Assistant professor of media and entertainment arts, Jonathan Pluskota, Ph.D., along with Paul Linden, Ph.D., associate professor of communications at Butler University, brought students from both of their programs to attend SXSW. The two used to work together at Southern Miss and have previously attended SXSW. This is Pluskota’s sixth year attending SXSW. When he first started bringing students to the festival, his primary goal was to get them volunteer experience in their field.

“It’s almost like what we would call an externship, which is like a concentrated short amount of time in your field to see if it’s something that you’d really like to do, but it was also about the sessions,” Pluskota said. “The people who are here are in the industry. When you’re talking about having anywhere from two to four people on a panel talk about their experiences, we can’t even afford to get one of them to come over.”

Students at SXSW attend more than 20 sessions and get to learn from anywhere from 40 to 80 people in the industry.

“To be able to pick up on that information from people outside of the classroom that have made it, that have been successful, that are entrepreneurs, that are movers and shakers – I think that’s so important,” Pluskota said.

because it allows for students to see a reallife application of the things they learn in classrooms.

“It would be egotistical for me to think that I cover everything in my classes – I don’t. There are people who know more about it, so why not bring people to come listen to their expertise in their fields?,” Pluskota said.

Three of his former students have gotten a job in Austin after attending SXSW. “It’s definitely possible,” Pluskota said.

“It’s all about the initiative and the tenacity.

The Hub Hattiesburg hosts Soulful Groove BLAIR BALLOU PRINTZ REPORTER

n the third Saturday of every month, the Hub of Hattiesburg is holding an open mic for aspiring poets, comedians, singers and musicians. The event was coordinated by restaurant owner Malcolm Clark and is part of a series of events that are held on each weekend of the month.

“We hold an event every weekend, but by far our most popular is our Soulful Groove,” Clark said.

Clark said each weekend has its own theme. The first Saturday of the month is a Paint, Party, and Groove event, where guests are invited to listen to live music, paint, eat, drink and have a good time as advertised in their flyers.

The second Saturday of the month is dedicated to the Comedy Crack Up, where the Hub provides a variety of comedians for a comedy show. The third weekend of the month is the Soulful Groove, where guest are invited to vibe and listen to Soul, Blues, R&B from their live soul band Phase Two. The Hub ends the month with a Kickback, Cocktails, and Karaoke night.

“We have been doing these events for a little over two years, but the Soulful Groove is our most popular event. People like that it’s safe and has an easy vibe,” Clark said.

Saturday night’s event was started off with a performance by singer Darius Gamble of Collins. Gamble opened the event with a cover of Daniel Caesar’s “Get You,” which was met by a standing ovation from the crowd.

This was Gamble’s second time performing at the event.

Gamble said he believes singing at the Soulful Groove has

helped him become a better artist and performer.

“This is my second time performing at Soulful Groove.

Both times were great experiences and being able to sing in front of a crowd has helped get rid of nervousness,” Gamble said.

Gamble said he would advise artists interested in seriously pursuing music to “just do it.” “Don’t have second thoughts.

Just do it. Even if you do have second thoughts, do it anyway,” he said.

On Saturday poets and singers got on stage to perform alongside the Hub house soul band the Phase Two, which is a combination of various musicians, each with different backgrounds in music.

Phase Two drummer Michael Bolton is self-taught musician and has been playing for 20 years and has been playing with the group for almost a year.

“I primarily play R&B and neo soul, but we’ll play everything from Al Green, Bobby Womack, Marvin Gaye, Mint Condition, the Drifters, to H.E.R, Daniel Cesar, and James Roe, ” Bolton said. “We’re a group of musicians that love to sing, play and have fun.”

Phase Two Head Keyboardist Zachary White started off as a Soulful Groove attendee but was offered a position in the band and has been playing with them ever since.

“At first I just came to all of the shows, then I asked them if I could join in with the band and that was that.”

White said he believes the city comes out to support the soulful groove because of the great vibes put off by Phase Two. “We play all elements to ensure you get a great vibe from it,” White said. “It’s a nice chill grown folks’ function. It’s safe.

You don’t have to worry about looking over your shoulder because we’re giving off positive vibes when we’re here.”

Students came to SXSW for many reasons, from looking for connections within their industries to being able to capitalize on the opportunity.

Senior recording industry major Demetrius Morrissette said he came to “meet new people and make some connections in the music industry.”

“It’s been great, honestly. I’ve been loving everything I’ve seen and everything I’ve learned. I met Wyclef Jean and everyone that he’s had on his latest album, and they gave me some great tips. I met people from New York and Asia; they’ve got my contact

information and my Instagram, and they’ve really been hitting me up. Come and don’t miss this experience. It’s definitely worth the money,” Morrissette said.

Junior broadcast journalism student Ikiesha Green said her professor, Mary Lou Sheffer, Ph.D., suggested she go.

“I came mainly because Dr. Sheffer wanted me to, but I’m really glad I did because I’ve learned a lot. I’ve learned to network with people, even if they’re not in the direction that I want to go in,” Green, said.

Green said her favorite parts of SXSW was being able to attend the premiere of the film “Us.” “It’s cool because we’re from Mississippi and obviously don’t go to movie premieres,” Green said. She also said she thought networking with movie directors was fun.

Patrick Wright, sophomore marketing major, said he decided to attend SXSW because it seemed like a cool opportunity.

“I got to see “Us” a couple of weeks before its premiere, and I saw some reviewers from Rotten Tomatoes. They argued a bit and it was a lot of fun. They were very jovial. I got to see Olivia Wilde speak. She’s a really great speaker. I also got to see some other great speakers as well. I went to the Q&A of “Us” and I met a film reviewer from Pop Axiom. I met a producer from Rooster Teeth, and an animator at Pixar while in line,” Wright said.

Pluskota advised those who want to attend SXSW to come with an open mind.

“Be prepared to go to sessions that are outside of your area,” Pluskota said. “That’s really where you learn a lot. You’re going to be exhausted. It’s going to be tiring. You’re going to have to pace yourself. It’s ten days of just immersion and it’s just constant - everything that wants your attention is asking for it at the same time, so you have to focus on that and prepare ahead of time, too. Set your schedule and be prepared to change it at the last minute.”

NEWS/FEATURE EDITOR pioids are highly addictive painkillers that can be prescribed for chronic pain or bought illegally from the streets of any town.

James Moore has been the owner of Moore’s Bicycle Shop for 35 years. After hearing that five overdoses occurred in the Hattiesburg area from a friend who works for the Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics, Moore began advertising on social media that his shop will offer Narcan at no cost.

The opioid crisis is a personal one for Moore, who found his son Jeffrey Moore dead in his apartment after overdosing on heroin at age 24 in April 2015.

Jeffrey had been evicted from a tobacco-free facility for being caught smoking a tobacco cigarette three times. Moore picked up Jeffrey from the facility with no knowledge of how to prevent his son from overdosing.

“When I picked him up, no one sat down with me and said, ‘Your son is at a very high risk of overdose if he uses because has no tolerance after being clean for 60 days. There’s a medication you can get it at CVS, and have it on hand should he overdose,’” Moore said.

“If someone had had that conversation with me as a parent, I would have been much more vigilant on April 6, 2015, when he didn’t answer my phone call.”

Naloxone, sold as a brand as Narcan, is a nasal spray that can be used to save someone from overdosing on opioids if rescue breaths fail.

Although Narcan can be bought from CVS, the cost of narcan can be close to $100 without insurance, according to CVS Health.

Moore is able to offer Narcan for free because of a federal grant. Anyone who has an addiction works in an environment where they might encounter someone with an addiction or lives with an addict and wants to be prepared can receive a dose of Narcan after watching a 7-minute training video.

Right before patrons walk into the training room, they see a purple wall filled with pictures of Jeffrey from childhood up until adulthood on their right.

Moore said Jeffrey loved working at the family business. “[He was] intelligent with a good sense of humor. He had one of those rare abilities to really instantly connect with anyone who walked in the door of the bicycle shop. We might have a customer who comes in who’s making a couple of hundred thousand dollars a year driving a $60,000 car that wants to buy a $5,000 bike, and Jeff right away could strike up a conversation and be understanding with that individual,” Moore said.

“The next day, we might have someone waiting on a sidewalk waiting for us to open that’s got a broken bike that has a flat, and they just need for us to get it fixed, so they can get to their job at Burger King. He could easily connect with that individual as well.”

Moore said those personality traits can be found in most people who suffer from addiction.

“The disease does not define who they are. It’s just something they have acquired,” he said.

After Moore found Jeffrey unconscious in his room, and Jeffrey died shortly after, Moore began reading books on addiction to better understand the disease and doing advocacy work in his free time.

It all began with a simple idea for a billboard.

“I wanted to bring this conversation to the community, and I was driving around in my truck,” Moore said. “I noticed there’s a picture I keep of Jeff and myself that he took. It was a selfie he took just before he died in the Georgia mountains.”

“And I said to myself, ‘I wish I could just put this up on a billboard to start a discussion, so that people could better understand that [addiction] is not a moral failing or a weakness or a character flaw,” Moore said.

That same day, Moore went to Lamar Outdoor Advertising to inquire about the cost of the billboard and found out he would only have to pay for printing. The company agreed to display the billboard for every time there was an unsold space.

The billboard featured the selfie of Moore and Jeffrey with the message, “ADDICTION is a DISEASE. Not a moral failing…SEEK HELP.” Moore said many good things began happening after the billboards came up. Recovery centers in Hattiesburg began getting referrals because of the billboards.

Moore also enjoys speaking in Hattiesburg recovery centers, Clearview Recovery Centers and Pine Grove Behavioral Health & Addiction Services.

“It’s helpful to speak directly to those seeking recovery as well because they understand now that someone finally understands a little bit about what they’re going through—not because of

any wisdom I have, but because I’ve read so many books written by people who were heroin addicts or who were addicted to something else and found recovery,” Moore said.

He also allowed for Oxford House, a nonprofit organization that works across the nation that allows those seeking recovery to live amongst those doing the same, to rent a house his son lived in.

Three hundred fifty-four Mississippians died in 2017 due to drug overdoses compared to West Virginia, the state with the highest number at 974, according to the CDC. Stand Up Mississippi, an organization working to end the opioid crisis, says that more than 80 percent of people who became addicted to heroin began with prescription medication.

One hundred eighty-three prescriptions for opioids were given per every 100 people in Forrest County in 2017, according to CDC data.

Governor of Mississippi Phil Bryant created the Opioid and Heroin Study Task Force in December 2016. During town hall meetings, Moore can be found telling Jeffrey’s story at town hall meetings alongside the Force. “[If Jeffrey were alive], I’d like to think he’d be using his [electrical technology certificate] at Jones. I’d like to think that perhaps he’d be opening his own business. I’d like to think that he would be moving closer to fatherhood,” Moore said.

Him Horrison debuts album at Thirsty Hippo CALEB MCCLUSKEY ASSISTANT NEWS EDITOR

im Horrison took over the Thirsty Hippo on Tuesday March 12, with Bloomington, Indiana band Heaven Honey for an album release party.

Him Horrison is the brainchild of Dylan “Dee Dee” Kern, who said the name is inspired by bands that took the name recognition of music to spark popularity in their music, recorded the “Port Modern Pastiche of Everything,” album in short bursts over a month.

“I’m happier than I’ve been in years despite burning every bridge I link to my past,” Kern said in the description of the album on Bandcamp. “It’s angelesque and trite, but [expletive] this is a lot of content that I put my entire heart into in spite of myself.”

Kern said that he does all of the songwriting, recording, booking and merchandise work but has five or six musician friends play with him on live shows. “[I do] all of the annoying stuff that no one really likes but everyone does,” Kern said.

“There is no reason for anyone else to do it in Him Horrison.”

Kern is well-known in the music scene for the multiple bands that have gained recognition in Hattiesburg, but Him Horrison is unlike the other sounds. Where Dee Dee Catpiss and the Fuzz Coffins is a hardcore punk band that is energetic and loud, Him Horrison is more subdued, utilizing spacey sounds and

psychedelic riffs for an introspective sound.

“I wanted to make sad music because I was sad,” Kern said.

Many of the songs on the album came from when Kern was a teenager writing music with an acoustic guitar that he brought back and built onto.

Riley said Him Horrison is not what people usually expect. Every band member dons all-black clothes but is allowed to accentuate the costume with jewelry, and Kern himself wears black from head to toe, including black lipstick.

Riley also said the band likes to portray itself as a cult. He said he is a follower of

Him, Kern’s character, and cannot speak unless okayed by Kern.

Members of the band all develop their own personalities besides themselves, according to Kern. Kern and his bandmates build these characters to embody things they often cannot do by themselves. “[Him Horrison] has always been something I’ve used to act certain ways and do certain things I wouldn’t necessarily be confident doing as myself,” Kern said. “I’m doing it to say some stuff that I wouldn’t say.”

Kern said he would personally rather play solo live as well but needs the assisting musicians to keep the live show as close to the recorded versions as possible.

Audio technician at the Thirsty Hippo Zach Ross said he has heard Kern play many times and liked Him Horrison for the darker atmosphere it provides.

“Dee Dee himself is one of the most talented artists we have in Hattiesburg right now,” Ross said. “Him Horrison itself is an interesting thing. I was going through a lot of stuff at the time [when he moved to Hattiesburg], and I really connected with the music.”

Ross said that Him Horrison was one of the first live shows he saw after moving from Texas to Hattiesburg and fell in love with the band pretty quickly.

“It’s kind of reductive sometimes,” Kern said. “Any kind of negative fringe toward people, that’s where I usually try to vent that out and come to terms with that it is fine.”

Him Harrison’s new album and the rest of its discography can be found on Bandcamp for free streaming.

ver since e-books began gaining popularity in the past decade, readers have debated which form of reading is the best. While many insist that print books are better, e-books have their own benefits that make them the optimal format for reading.

One of the biggest advantages of e-books is how portable they are. If you’re someone who likes to read while traveling, it’s much easier to bring an e-reader or other device with you than trying to carry and keep up with a bunch of books while you’re on the go.

In today’s world of online shopping and two-day shipping, e-books are the quickest and most convenient way to get started on a new book. You can browse through hundreds of different titles and then immediately start reading the book of your choice without leaving your home.

E-book marketplaces are also filled with thousands of books from independent publishers that are more unique and can’t be found in print format.

By using e-books, you can find books from lesser known authors that you would never find in a traditional book store.

Oftentimes, e-books are cheaper than their print counterpart. This is especially true of independently published e-books, which can be purchased for just a few dollars. Most libraries now even offer a catalog of e-books that members can borrow from. Using this feature is not only free but saves you from having to make the trip to the library to check out and return books.

While both e-books and physical books have unique features to offer, e-books come out as being the best option.

But at the end of the day, it’s up to the reader and how they prefer to enjoy reading.

Daylight Savings should end LAUREL THRAILKILL PRINTZ REPORTER s many students undoubtedly noticed, given that they were cheated out of an hour of sleep, March 10 marked the leap forward as a result of Daylight Savings Time for the United States and Canada. For most people, Daylight Savings Time is no more than a minor annoyance, but now is the time to examine the hidden consequences of this annual ritual and ask ourselves if Daylight Savings should actually be done away with altogether.

It is said that Daylight Savings was proposed by Benjamin Franklin in the 1700’s as a way to save candles. This alone goes to show how antiquated and obsolete the tradition has become.

Over a hundred years ago in 1918, president Woodrow Wilson codified Daylight Savings Time into law. Its official purpose was to simply save energy. One extra hour of sunlight should warrant one less hour of artificial light. This supposedly leads to reduced energy consumption. In theory, it makes sense.

Does Daylight Savings actually make a difference, though? Unfortunately, evidence points to no.

A recent study of United States homes

by Yale University actually found that the reduced energy as a result of Daylight Savings were more than made up for by increased costs generated by additional use of air conditioning and heating. According to this data, Daylight Savings is doing more harm than good by leading to a slight increase in energy consumption which can

climb as high as a four percent increase.

It doesn’t stop there. Many people report less sleep than usual the Sunday night after the shift. With everyone feeling the effects on Monday, there is a major decrease in productivity in the workforce.

According to The Atlantic, the resulting loss in productivity costs the economy an estimated $434 million per year. Believe it or not, there is also a noticeable spike in workplace injuries during Daylight Savings Time as well.

More light in the morning time might just be a good thing. Research suggests that exposure to light in the early mornings reduces the body’s production of hunger hormones. As a result of Daylight Savings, there is decreased light in the morning time which means you can kiss that new diet goodbye. The effects of the shift can lead to increased cravings and more unhealthy food choices.

Another point to consider regarding Daylight Savings is the fact that increased exposure to sunlight is simply not good for you. UV rays from the sun damage skin and can cause wrinkles and premature aging. In addition to looking worse, you’ll feel worse too. Darker mornings and a lack of sleep aren’t exactly a good combination. People tend to be overall moodier and angrier during Daylight Savings Time.

As the annual debate regarding Daylight Savings rages once again this year, everyone should keep in mind that despite good intentions, the negative effects of Daylight Savings Time outweigh any potential positives. The evidence is mounting year by year, and it’s not looking good. It is time for Daylight Savings Time to come to an end.

ou’re packing your bags for your relaxing beach vacation. You always take a couple books with you to keep your mind occupied while you burn under the sun. This time though, you’re not sure if you want to pack your trusty paperbacks or the fancy e-reader you got for Christmas.

As an avid reader and major fiction enthusiast, I encourage you to pack the paper.

There are many aspects of reading a paper book that rank it above e-books. While e-readers can contain libraries of stories and are light and easy to carry, the reading experience they promote is incomparable to that of paperbacks.

While reading a paperback, the reader is able to literally feel the story unfold. According to Anne Mangen, lead researcher in a Norwegian study on reading, reading on paper allows you to sense your physical progress, “on the left growing, and shrinking on the right. You have the tactile sense of

progress ... providing more fixity and solidity to the reader’s sense of unfolding and progress of the text, and hence the story.”

Paper books also provide readers with a sense of nostalgia. Reading a classic on paper gives the reader a feeling of “wow, so many people have read this story, just like me.”

“Jane Eyre” or “A Raisin in the Sun” on an e-book do not provide readers the same level of connection to others who have read the same story, for until fairly recently, no one read on electronic devices.

Frequent readers value the participation and engagement aspects of reading a paperback. While you can highlight or make notes on an e-reader, you are not able to flip through the e-book and see your reactions or notes in the margins. Physically dog-earing a page because you loved the contents allows you to celebrate that specific reading experience.

Both electronic and paper books have their pros and cons, but paperbacks foster a more enriching read (I haven’t even mentioned the smell!). Which will you pack?

‘Leaving Neverland’: dethroning the King of Pop JESSICA FIELDS PRINTZ REPORTER

rguably, there has never been a pop star more loved and adored than Michael Jackson. Like the Beatles rolled up into one person, Jackson was a musical icon that could never be touched. His music transcended decades, and his life left a huge influence on the world. Years after his death, a new documentary sets out to expose more of the star’s wrongdoings.

“Leaving Neverland” is a two-part documentary that aired on HBO and focuses on the lives of two men, Wade Robson and James Safechuck who say they were sexually abused by Jackson as children. After the segment aired, Oprah Winfrey interviewed the two men and the director of the documentary.

Allegations of Jackson sexually abusing minors started in 1993 when the Los Angeles Times reported that the LAPD had begun investigating that Jackson had possibly molested four children.

During that time, police found no incriminating evidence at Jackson’s Neverland ranch or at his Los Angeles home. This led many to believe these allegations were a hoax to defame the singer’s name.

However, later that year Vanity Fair published an article interviewing a possible abuse victim’s parent claiming that Jackson was indeed a child molester.

Following the publication of the article, LaToya Jackson, Michael Jackson’s sister, went on to say those claims were

in fact true.

“This is very difficult for me. Michael is my brother, but I cannot and I will not be a silent collaborator of his crimes against small, innocent children,” LaToya said.

Other members of the Jackson family spoke out against LaToya, including their mother Katherine Jackson.

The Washington Post quotes Katherine, “LaToya is lying and I’ll tell her to her face she’s lying.”

Abuse allegations died down until 2003 when police officially arrested Jackson, where he was indicted on 10 criminal counts including child molestation.

Jackson’s criminal case finally went to trail in 2005 after 2 years of suspicion and allegations, but Jackson was acquitted of all charges. Nothing more was heard about the abuse after the trial.

Jackson died on June 25, 2009 at the untimely age of 50 by the hands of his personal doctor, Conrad Murray. After Jackson’s death, people began to forget all about the allegations of abuse and focused more on losing a music icon.

That was until 2013, when Robson and Safechuck filed suits against the Jackson estate and his companies. Both of the men’s claims were dismissed in court, stating they had waited too long to file. Although the men did not get what they wanted out of the judicial system, they did get a chance to have their voices heard due to “Leaving Neverland.”

After the documentary aired, many people were outraged about the accusations against the singer because he is no longer here to defend his name.

I truly understand that thought process, but honestly, that is not the

People that are living with trauma have the right to speak about their issues even if others do not agree with them.

“Leaving Neverland” was not a documentary about destroying a man’s career; however, it was about how people are so quick to dismiss horrid accusations when it comes to someone they love.

What is so unfortunate is that society’s

idea of justice is so centered around incarceration and the prison system.

Yes, Jackson is not here today to be punished for his alleged crimes, but justice is simply not sending someone to jail.

The men in the documentary talk about horrible circumstances that possibly happened in their childhood so they can process it and move on and potentially help other people, and that is also a form of justice to not be silenced by your past.

How to use social media to get jobs ASHLYN LEVINS PRINTZ REPORTER

ocial media has a prominent presence in our lives, and for those who utilize it, social media can help with job searching.

Social media platforms help build a brand image of ourselves for viewers and hiring managers to understand who we are and what we do. Market specialist Paige Jones works at Career Services on campus and advises students about social media use and job searching.

“Students should realize the importance of how their personal social media plays into the job search process,” Jones said.

Some sites like time.com researched and found that 93 percent of hiring managers will review a candidate’s social media before making a decision, and 55 percent of them have actually reconsidered a candidate based on what they find on their social media. The main thing is to just keep your social media as clean as possible, and to remember that once it’s on the internet, it’s permanent (even for Snapchat).”

Here are some general tips on how to use social media for job searching: 1. Make sure your profile is clean.

It is important to keep your public profile clean and professional for potential employers to look at. This includes profanities and party pictures as well as articles or rants that could be offensive.

2. Use your real name.

Being active on social media doesn’t require you to open an account on every platform but remaining consistent and up to date on one or a few. Using your real

name will help employers find your profiles quicker.

3. Define your personal brand.

Your “brand” is how you define yourself to viewers. It lets people know who you are, your likes and dislikes and where you are going with your life. Having a consistent brand across each social media platform will help your brand become more recognizable.

Morgan Lawrence is a junior public relations major and uses social media to promote her business Created 2 Create Co. Lawrence takes jackets and makes them new with messages and art. All the money she raises through her business supports non-profits and ministries.

“Social media has given me an entirely new platform and audience than where I started. It was people just noticing me in person and other people wearing my jackets, but because of social media, my audience is now nationwide,” Lawrence said. “That wouldn’t be possible without being on social media. It also allows me to create this brand presence without someone seeing my brand in person. From filters and hashtags to words and fabric, my brand has a specific sense, and that’s because of social media.”

4. Use social media as links to your personal projects.

If you have a website or blog, include those links in your social media accounts.

This will help showcase your skills to potential employers. Have a place on your website that contains quick clicks to your social media. This helps employers search easier.

5. Don’t be afraid to include your handle on resumes.

“Students can use social media for job searching as a way to network. The most preferred network for job searching is of course LinkedIn. This is a site where students can receive endorsements on skills from peers, build their network and search for jobs,” Jones said.

Career Services on campus is a great place to start for those who are unfamiliar with branding and social media.

“Our office can help students find out

their interests and find the best path for their future career goals. In this process, we can work with students on their personal branding, and that will be what students should use to help brand themselves on social media as well,” Jones explained.

The university uses Handshake as a platform for students to connect and find jobs. Students can schedule an appointment with a staff member to help with resumes and cover letters, job interviews and career exploration.

There are multiple social media platforms to use, whether it is Facebook, Twitter, Instagram or LinkedIn. Explore the options and find one that best suits your brand and network connections.

Maren Morris releases sophomore album JACK MCCALLUM PRINTZ REPORTER

aren Morris’ “GIRL” is a sappy, emotional countrypop album that maintains the sound she’s known for while ventures in new

directions.

“GIRL” is the second studio album from Texas-born country singer Maren Morris. While there are tracks that maintain that traditional country sound like “All My Favorite People” (featuring Brothers Osborne), there are also more pop-oriented/radio friendly tracks like “RSVP.” Morris is showing that she is a strong songwriter and a diverse, adaptable artist on “GIRL.” The album kicks off with the upbeat, folksy-sounding “GIRL.” This track sets the tone for the album as uplifting and optimistic. It is incredibly inspiring to hear Maren’s sweet-sounding voice remind the listener that things will be okay.

A track that would be liked by fans of Maren’s older material is “The Feels.”

This song maintains her country sound as well as the album’s themes of positivity.

While it might be attempting to bring positivity and good vibes, “All My Favorite People” (feat. Brothers Osborne) is so annoying. Not only are its messages vague and messy, the grating voice of Brothers Osborne conflicts so hard with Maren Morris. “All My Favorite People” has the sound of the worst of post-9/11

bro country while filled with vague lyrics that seem like they are scared of stating their beliefs.

One of the better tracks from this album is the Brandi Carlile feature “Common.” This soft and gentle track brings two strong voices together for a happy, loving peaceful anthem. Morris and Carlile’s sounds go so well together and the overall message of uniting and loving one another is so important in

today’s social environment.

“Make Out With Me” is a standout track just from the title. Maren Morris brings so much soul to this romantic, folk-pop bop. Morris can truly do and go anywhere with her voice, but she shines brightest on these uplifting romantic songs.

The uplifting and hopeless romantic vibe continues on “Gold Love.” Maren Morris really flexes her vocal strengths

on the chorus of this song as she jumps up and hits those notes. “Gold Love” is another track that is so different from Morris’ previous work. Some might be annoyed by Maren Morris’ pop sound, but songs like this fit her voice and vision so well.

“Great Ones” is another pop-country crossover with a slight folk vibe. It takes it down a notch or two, a stark difference from “Gold Love.” This song is also quite different from other tracks as it sounds more chill, risking itself of being a boring listener the other day.

A standout track that one might not expect on a Maren Morris album is the catchy, poppy “RSVP.” Morris is showing how she can adapt her sound and create a track that is unlike anything else she has done. “RSVP” is such a catchy song out of left field and one that anyone can find themselves in. The only true criticism of the song could be that it is so different from the rest of “GIRL.” “Shade” is a strong conclusion to Maren Morris’ album as it is an incredibly positive, cheerful pop-country song. The guitars are so good on this song and they help bring out a Maren Morris’ voice in a diverse set of ways.

While there are so many great tracks on Maren Morris’ “GIRL” album, there are also quite a few filler tracks that add nothing to the album such as “The Bones.” Barring that, Maren Morris is an incredibly talented artist on the come up. “GIRL” is a great, solid pop-country record that highlight’s Maren Morris’ versatility and growth.

‘Captain Marvel’ shatters box office records LILLIE BUSCH PRINTZ REPORTER

eleased in theaters on March 8th, the latest superhero movie “Captain Marvel” quickly shattered box office records.

It earned the highest-grossing opening weekend for a female-led film and had the second biggest opening weekend of any superhero film. It also broke ranks to earn the fifth biggest opening of all time. While these records are fantastic, they are not the only things that set “Captain Marvel” apart as a superhero film.

Carol Danvers, played by Brie Larson, finds herself involved in a war between two intergalactic forces.

While the movie does begin slowly, do not let that deter you from viewing it in theaters. Admittedly, the script is occasionally spotty. But when the movie hits its stride halfway through, the pay-off is very much worth it.

“Captain Marvel” is not a movie that relies on dramatic irony or the audience’s outside knowledge–looking at you, Marvel fanatics. Rather, the viewer discovers information along with protagonist Carol Danvers. The plot becomes a personal journey for both her and the viewer.

The film is a puzzle, piecing together Carol’s past and deciding the true antagonist of the plot. This element,

encouraging the audience to think, truly sets “Captain Marvel” apart from other superhero films.

Critiques range from “too feminist” or “too politically correct.” Due to trolling backlash before the movie’s theatrical release, the popular movie critic site Rotten Tomatoes changed both its qualifications and rating system. YouTube changed its algorithm for trending topics to be considered “news.” The rules of the game changed.

Such outcomes are exactly why the entertainment industry needs more diversity. Movies should feature more female leads. Movies should represent minorities both on screen and behind the scenes. A movie will be considered “too feminist” until it is no longer abnormal for a superhero to be a woman, or for a young girl to enjoy science.

Overall, “Captain Marvel” can be summarized in many ways: a superhero’s origin story; a Nick Fury buddy comedy; a girl-power movie; Stan Lee’s last filmed cameo. But the brief descriptions alone do not do the film justice.

“Captain Marvel” is a solid addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Perhaps not the best but definitely not the worst.

Remember to stay for the two extra credit scenes – they’re worth it.

Golden Eagles take one of three against FAU MAKAYLA PUCKETT PRINTZ REPORTER he Southern Miss softball team (15-12, 2-4 C-USA) won one game in a three-game weekend series against Florida Atlantic (14-13, 2-1 C-USA) from March 16-17 at the Southern Miss Softball Contest.

In the first game of Saturday’s doublehader, FAU started the game with a two-run home run in the top of the first inning to take an early 2-0 lead.

by Lacey Sumerlin in the bottom of the sixth inning. However, the Owls extended their lead with an RBI single in the top of the seventh and allowing them to come away with the 3-1 win.

Southern Miss had five hits and two errors while unior pitcher Abby Trahan recorded the loss after allowing three runs on six hits and two walks.

In the second game Southern Miss jumped out to a 2-0 lead. Sarah Van Schaik hit a sacrifice fly, allowing Chase Nelson to score and give the team an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning.

In the third inning, Sumerlin hit a sacrifice fly that scored Destini Brown.

The Owls responded with a homerun in the top of the fourth inning. The bottom of the fourth inning saw senior Samantha Papp score off of an RBI by Brown.

With bases loaded in the top of the sixth inning, FAU was able to score on backto-back singles, which tied the game up at 3-3. Momentum stayed with FAU as a Southern Miss error allow for one more run to come across the plate and take the lead.

secure its 5-3 and series win.

Kaylan Ladner recorded the loss from the circle allowing four runs off eight hits during her 5.1 innings. Freshman Makenna Pierce took over in the bottom of the sixth inning in the circle giving up one hit and one run before being replaced by junior Bailie Springfield in the top of the seventh.

“I thought after yesterday [we had] two tough games that didn’t go our way.

I thought we played okay but we didn’t play well enough to win,” head coach Wendy Houge said. “Today was a must win game.”

Southern Miss avoided the sweep and won the final game of the series 2-0.

The Golden Eagles took the lead in the bottom of the first. Brown put herself in scoring position by stealing second and third base. Sumerlin capitalized and drove her in with a RBI single.

The score remained 1-0 until the bottom the the third inning as Van Schaik scored drove in Karley Nichols with a sacrifice fly.

Trahan redeemed herself in the circle with the shutout win. The junior now has a 5-7 record and 1.68 ERA. “Abby Trahan absolutely dominated in the circle and when she throws like that two runs is enough to win a ball game,” Houge said.

Houge hopes to “get this offense rolling again” for the Golden Eagle’s home game on March 19 against South Alabama.

“I think we are capable of scoring six to eight runs a game and we haven’t been seeing that,” Houge said. “Our pitchers need to keep doing what they need to do.

Defense is playing well. I think we need to make extra effort plays, they need to become routine for us. We’ve got to start swinging the bats better.”

Southern Miss opens conference play with sweep GRANT CHIGHIZOLA MANAGING/SPORTS EDITOR ollowing a midweek loss to Louisiana-Lafayette on March 13, the Southern Miss baseball team rebounded to open up Conference USA play with a sweep of Louisiana Tech on the road. The series win gives the team an 11-6 overall record and a 3-0 record in conference play.

In the first contest on Friday, the two teams recorded a combined 21 runs and 27 hits.

Matt Wallner kicked things off for Southern Miss with a three-run home run to right field in the first inning. LA Tech responded with a five-run second inning that included two home runs, giving the Bulldogs a 5-3 lead.

Southern Miss bounced back with five runs across the third, fourth and fifth innings to retake the lead. LA Tech was not finished offensively in the contest, however.

The Bulldogs scored two runs in the fifth inning to cut the Southern Miss lead to 9-7 and runs in the sixth and seventh innings to narrow Southern Miss’ lead again.

Brant Blaylock added a two-RBI single in the sixth inning and Matthew Slater hit a solo home run, his second of the game, in the ninth inning to give the team all the cushion it needed in the 12-9 win.

On the mound, Aaron Ginn earned his first win of the season after pitching three innings in relief. J.C. Keys earned his second save of the year, pitching two innings and striking out three batters in that span.

Starting pitcher Walker Powell gave up five runs and six hits in two innings of work.

The Golden Eagles continued their offensive tear in Game 2 on Saturday, recording 14 hits in a 5-1 win to clinch the series. Danny Lynch added an RBI single to center field in the second inning, which was followed by another RBI single by Slater and a two-RBI double by Erick Hoard in the third inning to give Southern Miss a 4-0 lead.

inning, but Southern Miss got out of that jam and added a run off of a Slater RBI double in the sixth inning to close out the win.

Once again, the Golden Eagles used four pitchers in the contest. Starter Stevie Powers allowed four hits, a run and recorded four strikeouts in 4.1 innings pitched. Sean Tweedy earned the win after 2.2 innings pitched, three hits allowed and recording two strikeouts.

Southern Miss once again scored doubledigit runs in the final game of the series on Sunday.

Cole Donaldson gave the Golden Eagles an early lead with a three-RBI double that scored Blaylock, Slater and Gabe Montenegro. The Bulldogs responded with a two-run home run in their frame of the first inning to cut Southern Miss’ lead to 3-2.

Bryant Bowen hit a sacrifice fly that allowed Blaylock to score, giving the Golden Eagles a 4-2 lead in the second inning.

However, LA Tech added another run in the bottom of the second inning to once again cut Southern Miss’ lead, this time to 4-3.

Three Southern Miss in the fifth inning gave the team a 7-3 lead heading into the final two innings. LA Tech added one run apiece in the sixth and seventh innings, but home runs from Matthew Guidry and Bowen in the eighth and ninth innings put the stamp on the Game 3 win for the Golden Eagles.

Mason Strickland earned the Game 3 win on the mound after three innings of work where he allowed three hits, one run and struck out one batter.

Southern Miss recorded 40 hits over the weekend, including five home runs. The team also used 11 different pitchers on the mound over the course of the weekend.

The Golden Eagles’ next conference series is against Old Dominion at Pete Taylor Park from March 22-24. Old Dominion is 1-2 in C-USA play following its opening conference series against Charlotte. First pitch for the Friday game in the series is set for 6 p.m.

What’s next for the Lady Eagles in 2019-2020?

GRANT CHIGHIZOLA MANAGING/SPORTS EDITOR RISCO, Texas— The Southern Miss women’s basketball team’s ended its Conference USA tournament appearance with a loss in the first round of the against North Texas on March 13. Despite the loss the program is set to participate in a postseason tournament and will return a wealth of experience and players from this past season.

Redshirt senior Megan Brown is currently the only player the Lady Eagles are set to lose this offseason. Brown was a solid and important force in the Southern Miss starting lineup for the last three seasons, as she started 30 games this past season, 30 in 2017-18 and 34 in 2016-2017. The guard also was second on the team in minutes per game, averaging 29.5, points per game with 9.5 and a .860 threepoint percentage mark Following the loss to North Texas, head coach Joye LeeMcNelis talked about Brown’s impact on the team.

“She’s the counselor of our team,” Lee-McNelis said.

“She is someone that walks in your life and impacts it and leaves footprints along the way.”

Brown’s presence on and off the court is sure to be missed by the team, but there are a few younger players who may be able to fill the void, particularly Daishai Almond, Allie Kennedy and Kelsey Jones.

Almond averaged 11.7 minutes per game, mostly off of the bench. The freshman broke out with a 10-point, two steal performance against a nationally-recognized Mississippi State squad. Almond followed that performance up with double-digit scoring performances against conference opponents North Texas and Louisiana Tech (twice) later in the season.

During her sophomore campaign in 2018-19, Kennedy was another major contributor off the bench for Southern Miss. Kennedy averaged 15.1 minutes per game in 28 appearances. Kennedy was also third on the team with 25

three-pointers and 23 assists. Look for Kennedy to contribute more in minutes and statistically in 2019-2020.

Kelsey Jones is also another intriguing younger player on the roster who will possibly be a centerpiece in the frontcourt on next year’s squad. After redshirting in 2017-2018, Jones appeared in 29 games in 2018-2019, all as a reserve. Still, Jones averaged 7.8 points-per-game, had eight doubledigit scoring games and was the team leader with 145 total rebounds.

step in her redshirt sophomore campaign, then the Lady Eagles will have a deep and experienced frontcourt next season.

While much talk will be focused on the younger contributors heading into next season, the Lady Eagles also return a veteran core. Leading that core will be Shonte Hailes. During her junior campaign, Hailes was the unquestioned leader of the team statistically. In 28 games, all starts, Hailes averaged a team-high 32.2 minutes-per-game, 12.7 points-per-game and 123 total assists. Next season,

Hailes will have to continue to show consistency on the court all season while being a leader on the floor for the team.

Behind Hailes is a quartet of fellow juniors who are set for their senior campaigns. Guard Camille Anderson and center Amber Landing were redshirt juniors in 2018-2019, while Alarie Mayze and Respect Leaphart were true juniors.

Mayze averaged 7.7 points-per-game and had a teamhigh 62 steals in 30 starts and should be a key contributor once again in the starting five. Landing started 26 games at center and gives the team a 1-2 punch at the center position along with Jones.

“I think we return a really core group of players,” LeeMcNelis said. “We saw Kelsey Jones and we saw Daishai Almond really grow as true freshmen. Camille Anderson being a first-year player for us, again, you saw some growth in her as well. I think those three players in particular were first-year players for us that really impacted us in that run. They were true difference makers, and I think them returning with Alarie Mayze, Respect Leaphart, Shonte Hailes, Amber Landing, that crew is a pretty good group to return. Again, I think the biggest thing is, who’s going to lead this team? Megan Brown is gone.”

With a mix of under and upperclassmen returning, another big question heading into next season is if the program can improve its overall and conference win total.

The program is now two seasons removed from a 23-11 record and a WNIT appearance in 2016-17.

For the team to eclipse the 20-win mark again in 20192020, the team must improve offensively in the scoring department. In a span of four games from Dec. 30-Jan. 10, the team did not eclipse 50 points in each game, all losses.

While the team did average 62.6 points-per-game overall, they need to improve on that average and avoid long losing streaks in order to improve on the 17-13 record they had in 2018-2019.

Still, the season is not quite over yet for the Lady Eagles.

The team accepted an invite to the Women’s Basketball Invitational (WBI) and will host Nicholls State at 6 p.m. on on Thursday.

Southern Miss’ C-USA Tournament run ends in semis ANDREW ABADIE EXECUTIVE EDITOR RISCO, Texas— For the third time this season, Southern Miss was defeated by Western Kentucky, this time in the semifinal round of the Conference USA tournament.

The Hilltoppers’ defense and size proved to be the difference in the win for Western Kentucky, as they handed the Golden Eagles a 70-59 loss on Friday.

“I thought for 30 minutes in each game we played really, we played {Western Kentucky] as well as we could play at times,” Southern Miss head coach Doc Sadler said. “The thing that we take pride in is not turning the basketball over and taking care of the paint, and that’s something we didn’t do today. When you play in big ball games that’s what you got to do. Uncharacteristic was the turnovers that we had and then the offensive rebounds and more importantly just the drives and transition.”

The Golden Eagles turned the ball over 16 times after posting a season average of just 10, which was the top mark in C-USA. “We got a couple of blocks and a couple of layups but we didn’t secure the ball,” guard Cortez Edwards said. “So [we we’re] just trying to tell the guys to be more aggressive when the ball [was] loose and make the right rotations when the defense is taking you out.”

Despite the turnovers, Western Kentucky penetrated inside the paint, outscoring Southern Miss 32-12 in that category

and scored 18 points off second-chance opportunities, while the Golden Eagles did not score any second-chance points. The Hilltoppers also outrebounded the Golden Eagles 44-27.

“I think they got most of the 50-50 balls so every time there was a batted ball or just a deflection they ended up winning and making the play,” Edwards said The second chance plays and rebounds culminated with Western Kentucky’s final run that broke the game open at the 7:29 mark, as the Hilltoppers took control with a 12-3 run.

“I think in one stretch they had seven straight in transition and you’re not going to beat a good team when that happens, but give [Western Kentucky] credit, they have a heck of a basketball team,” Sadler said.

“Something we don’t do that I should have probably done was play zone [defense] and I didn’t, but we don’t. Looking back, I think that’s one thing that could have helped us a little bit.”

Point guard Tyree Griffin led the Golden Eagles with 19 points and Edwards finished with 10 points.

“I’m very proud of my team,” Sadler said.

“Obviously we’re disappointed. We came down here with the intentions of winning, but you know what we’ll give [Western Kentucky] credit and we’ll learn from it and move on.

Hopefully, that’s not the last game that this team plays if it’s not then we’ll be better the next time we play.”

CONTINUED FROM PG 1 It was just over three years ago that the NCAA handed down the sanctions to Southern Miss, which is something Sadler remembers vividly.

“It was January 21st,” Sadler said. “I remember it because it’s been hard. It’s been really really hard to really not know what’s going to happen. Again if you go over the history of schools and teams that have been put on probation. It takes a long time to recover.

There’s so many programs that never recover for a long time and some never recover. Saying that, our probation has probably been the worst it’s ever been besides the death penalty.

We’re the first team that’s ever gotten two seasons of postseason ban. It’s been hard [but] it’s been rewarding, and hopefully now we’re going to head to the right direction and not look back but just look forward.”

The program is in its final year of the sanctions, which included recruiting restrictions, the vacation of all of the program’s wins and NIT appearances from the 2012-2013

and 2013-2014 seasons, as well as the first six wins of the 2014-2015 season. Additionally, the NCAA handed down three years of probation, and former athletic director Bill McGillis also implemented a self-imposed two-year postseason ban that was upheld by the NCAA. It’s been a season of firsts for the Golden Eagles under Sadler, as Sadler received his first postseason bid at Southern Miss and the team’s 20-12 record marked his first winning season since taking over the program. After going 30-60 in his first three seasons, Sadler has guided the program to a resurgence, going 36-30 in the last two seasons.

“I started to leave on two different occasions in this process,” Sadler said. “I had other opportunities and basically took one of them, and then at the last minute, I decided not because I felt like I owed it to Cortez, Kevin, Tyree and Dominic [Magee] because I had told them that I would stay, and I did.”

Sadler received a contract extension after

the 2018 season that rolled over and turned into a three-year deal. As for the basketball program itself, the sanctions will officially end on January 29, 2020.

“It’s been a tough five years. Not very many coaches survive probations, and I’ve been able to do that because I’ve got good kids, good character and they’ve improved and not just this year, but last year’s season was a good season. Bottom line, if you win anything, you win a game, it helps you, but to win 20 games is pretty impressive with this group of guys.”

The CBI features a field of 16 teams with three rounds that will be played from March 19 to 28 before the championship round. The championship itself is a best of three series that will be aired on ESPNU starting on April 1.

The Golden Eagles will face Longwood (12-17) in the opening round of the tournament and would face the winner of the DePaul-Central Michigan game if they were to win against Longwood.
