Wonderfully Woman: Women’s History Month celebrates women’s accomplishments KYRA LAMPLEY EXECUTIVE EDITOR

T

he implementation of Women’s History Month challenged the patriarchal society of America to recognize the success of women throughout history. In February of 1980, former president of the United States, Jimmy Carter, declared the week of March 8 as National Women’s History Week. This later turned into a month-long affair after the National Women’s History Project successfully urged Congress to expand the event to the entire month of March, according to National Geographic. Throughout history, women’s contributions to society have always been overlooked by their male counterparts. Historical figures such as Harriet Tubman, Madam C.J. Walker, Susan B. Anthony and Catherine Brewer paved the way for women to speak up for their rights and to have the courage to complete tasks that were male-dominated. Tubman helped countless numbers of enslaved individuals escape to freedom. Walker created hair care products for African American hair, making it possible for styling. Anthony was the most prominent advocate for women’s voting rights during the Women’s Suffrage Movement. Brewer became the first woman in the United States to graduate with a bachelor’s degree. It is women like these historical figures that helped bring light to women’s accomplishments and the power of being a woman. “It is impactful when people see themselves represented in places of leadership. When women see leaders like them making decisions, caring for others and directing organizations, they are affirmed that it is possible for them to do the same,” Laura Lauglin, the director of the

USM Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life said. [via USM Office of Fraternity & Sorority Life] Hattiesburg native, Oseola McCarty, donated her life savings to USM to help aid future students’ college journeys. McCarty is known as one of the most prominent figures in Southern Miss history with the university naming a Residence Hall after her and placing a statue in her honor beside Shoemaker Fountain. Lauglin says that McCarty is someone that she admired growing up. “One of the first women I looked up to in life was Oseola McCarty. I knew her when I was a little kid growing up in Hattiesburg,” Laughlin said. “Even as a child, before the world knew her story, I knew her to be a kind, genuine, selfless Hattiesburger. She will always be a model of simplicity and selflessness.” she said. [USM Office of Fraternity & Sorority Life] Much like McCarty, there are other notable historical female figures within the state of Mississippi. Ida B. Wells was a journalist and civil rights leader advocating known for her anti-lynching campaign. Fanny Lou Hammer was a civil rights leader and advocate for African Americans’ right to vote. Eudora Welty is one of America’s best and most recognizable authors. Modern-day notable female figures from Mississippi include nationally known talk show host, author Oprah Winfrey and Robin Roberts, a nationally known news broadcaster. Geneal Washam, the office manager of the USM Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life, thinks that celebrating women’s success is crucial. “Women’s Month should be celebrated to give acknowledgment for the work that so often goes unnoticed by so many great women,” Washam said. “Designating this month is a time to reflect on the courage of women in the past and present generations who’ve paved the way for so many others.”

Oseola McCarty, among many other women, are celebrated during March for their accomplishments.

Many steps have been taken to ensure that women get the praise that they deserve for their contributions to society, but there is still work to be done. The United States is still a male-dominated society, especially when it comes to leadership in the workplace. According to Nichols College Institute for Women’s Leadership reports that 21 percent of women hold senior leadership positions. Women are typically thought of as ‘weaker’ or ‘less assertive than men, therefore being overlooked for top-tier positions. Still, in 2022, the pay gap between men and women is still significantly spaced out, with men out-earning women by 18 percent. History has proven that women are worth more than that.

Washam wants to encourage women to achieve their goals, no matter how difficult the situation. “Every day I wake up with breath in my body is an opportunity to do something to change the world. If you believe in your dreams, you can definitely achieve them. That alone inspires me daily to be the change I want to see,” Washam said. Women are strong, fearless and dynamic. Part of the American ideology is to give everyone equal opportunities within life. This should be honored for everyone, male, female, or however one identifies. While Women’s History Month may be ending at the end of March, the fight for women’s rights will not cease.

QUESTION:

How do you know if someone is in-

terested in you? Should you make the

first move or keep the friendship you have already? HUEY:

A good friendship is something hard to come by, especially in today’s

society. If you start to catch feelings for a friend and don’t know if they

are entirely interested, it may be best to just lay low and see if the feel-

ings come to be mutual. If there are hints and cues dropped, the mature

thing to do is just talk to that person and see if these feelings are legiti-

mate or you are just hoping they are

to be true. If things seem to be going well, then making the next move in

the relationship may be the only way to get the kindle burning. ABBY:

Most of the time when people are

interested in you, they tend to let

you know through cues. They can be

somewhat subtle, or grow much more expressive over time. Regardless, you

should be able to figure it out. If you reciprocate those feelings and are

looking to pursue something more,

then making the first move shouldn’t be a problem. However, if you do

make the first move, be entirely calm about it. Have a genuine and sweet approach that isn’t overbearing or

too pushy. You don’t want to freak

them out by moving too fast! But if

you don’t reciprocate these feelings,

it might be time to friend-zone. The friend-zone isn’t exactly as bad as people have made it out to be. It’s

not an awful thing, as long as the

other person respects your decision

to remain friends. I wish you the best in finding a relationship that is right for you, whether it be romantic or simply platonic!

ou come home from a long day of work, it’s after five and you’re tired. You arrive home to the Mr. or the Mrs. and your two children. However, upon arrival and fatigue you find three extra children, What do you have now? A problem? “I would come home from basketball there would be five kids at my house and only two of them were mine,” Van Jones said. However, for Jones, a husband, and father of two girls, this wasn’t a problem, but a blessing in the making. Jones hails from the small town of Moorhead, in the small Sunflower County of the Mississippi Delta. He and his wife are University of Southern Mississippi Alumni. The 6’9, Delta native, also had a four-year career with the Golden Eagles Men’s basketball team from 1997-to 2001. Jones said he had a dream from God, who gave him the five letters, A.S.A.A.P. Jones was unsure what the letters stood for. He asked his college sweetheart, Nicole, to “put some meat on

the bones” and Mrs. Jones delivered: The After School Academics and Arts Program. The mission at A.S.A.A.P is for boys and girls to experience Jesus’ love daily. The students complete their homework, listen to daily devotionals, participate in enrichment activities and engage weekly in character, dance, art, and music education. It all began out of his home with his wife and children of coworkers, church members and friends. Nicole asked Van, “What if we create a better after-school environment for children?” That principle has led to the program’s success. In March 2022, A.S.A.A.P celebrated its 12th anniversary with locations in Hattiesburg, Oak Grove and Petal. Jones said that A.S.A.A.P plans to continue growing by opening their fourth location in Purvis, Mississippi. Jones coached basketball at various local high schools and then moved into educational administration. He credits his background in basketball and education for his problem-solv-

ing involvement in the program. “As a principal, you are a learning leader, you are the academic leader and you are the chief problem solver,” Jones said. “You are also trying to teach people how to solve problems and that is what I am doing to this day in 2022.” Nicole’s ministry and professional background along with a love for children- married with Van’s background in coaching, educational administration, relationships, “coupled together for a great recipe.” One of Jones’ key points from his background is that he encourages people to be a problem-solver. “If you are a problem-solver you will always have a job, you will always have resources, you will always have something to do,” Jones said. “Don’t run from problems, face them head-on and be a problem solver. Create a plan, stick to it.” In creating a plan, Jones challenges the idea of trying different things to find your place. Jones proposes we consider what we are great at and pursue things in that area. Let’s find out what is on the inside

of us that we can take anywhere. Jones writes, speaks, coaches and teaches primarily on the subjects of leadership, success, spiritual growth and unity. His overall desire is to be a part of greater missions, be Jesus’ hands and feet, and live full and die empty. His philosophy is simple: clarify purpose, identify gifts and set realistic goals, combined with a strong work ethic, pervasive discipline, a solid belief system and an unrelenting resolve to excellence. Jones emphasizes like what A.S.A.A.P. has taught to many children, believe that you ‘can’ by staying encouraged, staying the course and keeping the faith.

USM history faculty react to implications of war in Ukraine SIMEON GATES PRINTZ REPORTER

S

ince February, Ukraine and Russia have been engaged in the largest conflict Europe has seen since the second World War. The conflict has inspired international uproar, including reaction from professors at the University of Southern Mississippi. Earlier this month, Associate Professor of History Dr. Brian LaPierre shared his condemnation of the war with The Student Printz and WUSM’s Southern Miss Today. To add more perspective, The Student Printz reached out to other members of the history faculty - Heather Stur and Joe Weinberg. Stur is a professor of history who studies U.S. foreign relations and the Cold War. In her view, Putin is looking to regain the power of the territory Russia lost after the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991. Given the risks, she thinks that the United States is right to avoid military action. “I don’t think the U.S. will get involved directly, either by sending in ground troops or deploying airstrikes,” Stur said. “...having just gotten out of Afghanistan…I don’t think there is the political will to commit the U.S. to fighting in another country when U.S. interests are not threatened.” Stur noted the parallels between the

current conflict and the Cold War. She hopes that like back then, factors such as the threat of nuclear war will keep the two rivals from facing each other directly. This also means that, for now, it is unlikely the U.S. will reinstate the draft, a fear that many have had in times of conflict. As Stur explains, “...widespread opposition to the draft among the American public ensures that any effort to reinstate the draft would be political suicide.” Weinberg is another history professor specializing in international relations. Like Stur, he’s hopeful that the war will remain contained to Ukraine and Russia. As for the millions of refugees from the conflict, Weinberg is sure that the U.S. will continue to send support, though this may be because most of the refugees will be resettling in Europe. “It’s a lot easier to be supportive of an issue that isn’t ‘your’ immediate problem,” Weinberg said. Despite the international backlash against Russia, he believes the war is unlikely to challenge Putin’s reign. “It could absolutely jeopardize his position. That being said, he’s got a pretty firm hold on power over there, so it would take some major defections from his inner circle - or a change of heart

on his part - to jeopardize that hold,” Weinberg said. Both professors agree that the war will have far-reaching consequences. Stur expressed concern for Russia’s other neighbors. “I worry that if somehow Russia manages to take control of Ukraine... Putin could turn the other direction and attack countries such as Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, or others,” Stur said.

On the other hand, Dr. Weinberg was concerned about the United States’ role in the war. “This war will do a lot—one way or another—to shaping the next 20 years of the US’s role in the international community, “ Weinberg said. each volleyball has spread from its Pacific roots across the globe, even to the artificially placed sands of Hattiesburg, Mississippi, where Southern Miss has established itself as a leading figure in the blossoming sport. Beach volleyball is one of, if not the fastest growing sports in collegiate athletics. According to the Association of Volleyball Professionals, there were 56 beach volleyball teams when beach volleyball officially became a sanctioned sport by NCAA in 2016. There are now 334 Division 1 volleyball programs along with hundreds of other programs in the NCAA as well, according to the Next College Student Athlete (NCSA). Southern Miss got on board with the growth early, debuting in 2018 and becoming the first Division One team to host a beach volleyball match in Mississippi in 2019. At the forefront of Southern Miss’ dive into beach volleyball is graduate student Olivia Hepworth, who is the only remaining member of the program’s inaugural season. Hepworth joined Abbey Wilson as the first players to compete for the program in 2018, which eventually grew to a roster of 14 players the following season and now has grown to a roster of 17 players. While the program began under the guidance of then indoor volleyball Head Coach Stephanie Radecki and featured mainly indoor players, the program has gradually transitioned to almost exclusively beach players like Hepworth under its exclusive beach volleyball Head Coach Shawn Taylor. “We have just made huge strides since I’ve been here…this year, we have a completely separate roster from the indoor team and I think that’s a huge testament to what Shawn [Taylor] has done with the program, how he has recruited and prioritized the program,” Hepworth said. “It’s been such an incredible opportunity and I absolutely believe that with his leadership, we will continue in that direction of making huge strides every year for not just our campus but also the community and Mississippi as a whole.” But while Southern Miss has pioneered beach volleyball in Mississippi, Taylor was a trailblazer in the sport prior to being hired to the program in 2019. Taylor served as the head coach just 90 miles away

The Batman’: Gotham City’s soundtrack adds to film’s mastery

JESSICA BESNARD PRINTZ REPORTER

T

o the Batman, ‘The Batman,’ the modern-day moody noir in Gotham City starring Robert Pattinson as Batman and Zoë Kravitz as Catwoman, has risen to the top of the box office and has been acclaimed by many as one of the best adaptations of the comic series. But what has been overlooked is the success of the film’s victoriously haunting and hypnotizing soundtrack. The score for ‘The Batman’ by Michael Giacchino, classically grasps the darkness and malignant nature of Batman and his enemies. The soundtrack opens with ‘Can’t Fight City Halloween,’ after taking place on Halloween, which was stylistic, thematic and set the moody tone. Batman voiced morosely, over the piece, that he is the shadows, which then escalates into something more frightening. The notable ‘The Batman’ by Giacchino evokes exhilaration for the audience by starting out somewhat distant and ominous, the theme alluding to Batman lurking in the shadows, then escalates as if he is slowly coming closer by becoming much more dramatic and powerful. This piece makes Batman seem truly undefeated. ‘Catwoman’ is more romantic and much different than Batman’s theme, stressing a desirous ambiance. This piece is much more melancholic and jazzier than others of Giacchino’s, further contributing to the noir-esque vibe that ‘The Batman’ comprises. Though I enjoy Catwoman’s theme, I wish it built into something more ferocious and dramatic. Catwoman isn’t a soft character, especially not in her leather catsuit, and I think a theme juxtaposed with the already existing one would have done her character some good. However, I do believe the gentler tone of ‘Catwoman’ and ‘Ganikka Girl,’ which slightly introduces Catwoman’s theme, stands out and gives the film a tasteful dynamic. ‘The Riddler’ is wonderfully villainous, starting out suspenseful then building up to sound sinister.

Carter’s Countdown: Top 100 Songs

CORDAVEON CARTER PRINTZ REPORTER 0. No Vaseline – Ice Cube: One of the greatest diss tracks to ever grace the planet of Earth. This song is about the fallout of the legendary group NWA and Ice Cube destroyed them. No Vaseline takes shots at every single member of NWA and you can feel the rage. If you love old-school rap, this is one of the must-listen songs of that generation. 89. Ex B***h – XXXTentacion: Making another one of his many appearances on my top 100 songs list, this song is a chill and mellow track that talks about a failed relationship. X deals with the effects of her betraying him and now being alone. It’s much different from X’s usual songs as it’s stripped down with only an acoustic guitar to encapsulate his raw emotions. 88. Lightning and Thunder – Jhene Aiko: This song showcases the thoughts when falling into a pure, deep and innocent love like never before. This shocks her and leads her into doing things she has never done before in any relationship. ‘Lightning and Thunder’ offers a very intriguing and interesting take into love. which is why it is one of my favorite love ballads. John Legend provides more depth to the song with his feature and Jhene’s voice is very calming and soothing. 87. XO – John Mayer: This is one of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard. It showcases the importance of unconditional love in a relationship. This also shows how much quality time matters with the one you love and how you should take absolute advantage of it while you have the time. Originally a song by Beyonce, this cover is just more emotional and authentic to me. 86. Wish – Trippie Redd: A vibe. The production by Diplo defines this song and makes it what it truly is. I honestly think if his signature style was not on ‘Wish’, it would not have been nearly amazing as it was. Trippie provided some unique and feelgood vocals on this track, which makes it an enjoyable listen. 85. Me and Your Mama – Childish Gambino: This song

It’s very accurate to who his character is. ‘Moving in for the Gil’ sounds as if the orchestra is made up of serene sirens coming across as very malevolent and thrilling then slowly transcending–or “moving in”–into something much more eerie and dramatic. There are also songs, unlike the scores, which matched perfectly with Bruce Wayne and Batman’s sulky demeanor. Songs such as ‘Something In The Way’ by Nirvana made an appearance multiple times, striking a brooding grungey feel throughout the movie. This Nirvana song was also used for the trailer, which was surprising but pleasing. I never imagined Nirvana to star in a movie adaptation of a comic book, but this was surely a fitting choice. It added to the doomy reclusiveness that both Batman and the Riddler shared. “And the animals I’ve trapped have all become my pets,” Kurt Cobain, lead of Nirvana, sings which relates specifically to the Riddler and his cages of rats. ‘Ave Maria’ is played throughout the movie then sung coldly by the Riddler himself toward the end. It’s a Catholic prayer that sounds ghostly yet heavenly when sung and contributes to the Riddler’s confusing and obscure identity. ‘The Batman’ score flawlessly captures the essence of vengeance and everything Batman is supposed to be. This soundtrack conjures up a suspenseful, do-or-die, high-stakes spirit perfecting the moodiness of Bruce Wayne and Gotham City’s terrors while artistically adding to the film noir aspect. 9/10.

absolutely led me into the diversity which I have in my music taste now. ‘Me and Your Mama’ is experimental from what Gambino usually does and what he was known for, incorporating styles from different genres like rock, gospel, R&B and blues. My dad introduced me to this and honestly, I do not regret this for one bit. It showed me how diverse artist can be and how going outside of your box is beneficial. 84. The Story of O.J – Jay Z: This song addresses the problems HOV thinks African Americans face in the United States. He offers advice to help the black community see why other communities are so financially wealthy. ‘The Story of O.J’ shows the generational curse of oppression and while there has been a progression, many things remain the same. The sample of Nina Simone really brings the song full circle. 83. Come Over – Tom The Mail: The essence of this song is to capture the raw emotion of a budding romance. Tom is all about this girl and ready to give his all for her because he is deeply in. The R&B/Pop feel of this song makes it what it is with the sweet, gullible lyrics of puppy love. Tom The Mail Man is one of the most underrated artists out right now. 82. Letter From Houston – Rod Wave: Rod Wave is one of the greatest storytellers and genuine rappers of our generation and he puts his heart on his sleeve on ‘Letter From Houston’. It showcases his pure love for this girl and how he is willing to do anything for her. It’s very melodic and catchy with great production tip-toeing away from the standard rap into something original. Rod has a very emotional voice, and he really showcases his feelings through his lyricism. 81. What’s The Use – Mac Miller: This is an absolute groove and establishes that old ‘70s type funk. Thundercat provides a thumping bassline for this song, which projects nothing but good vibes. Miller, per usual, delivers with his wordplay and flow that makes you want to nod your head and leave your worries behind.

Lucky Daye delivers long-awaited delicacy to music world

KYRA LAMPLEY AND KOBY MOORE PRINTZ REPORTER

L

ucky Daye has delivered another musical masterpiece with his newest album, ‘CandyDrip’. This is Daye’s third studio album since the release of ‘Painted’ in 2019. ‘Candydrip’ is filled with subtle mixes of soul, r&b and hip hop, incorporating some of his signature sounds into this new project. It is composed of 17 songs, running at just a little under an hour of play time. Like his other works, Daye keeps his signature elements of calming music, storytelling and spoken words-describing a past relationship. Starting with ‘Intro’, the first song on the album, Daye instantly grabs the attention of listeners as he describes the girl of his dreams in spoken word. With his wordplay and details, the fantasy that encircles Daye’s mind can be easily imagined by listeners. Other notable songs on the album include ‘NWA’ featuring Lil Durk. This song was released before the album and has an underlying Latin, rhythmic beat, overlapped with a modernized hip hop beat. ‘Guess’ has a groovy, old R&B sound that could be compared to an older Usher song. This song entails the struggles of Daye trying to prove himself to his dream girl. ‘Over’ is one of the most recognizable songs of the project. It highlights the ups and downs of his relationship as “nightmares turn into a dream” by detailing the toxicity of the relationship. Lucky Daye ends the song singing, “know you a 10 but that attitude ain’t fine”, signaling to

listeners that he recognizes the problem of his relationship, wants to fix it, but the girl isn’t responding the way he wants. Ending the album, Daye closes with ‘Fever’ and ‘Ego’. ‘Fever’ gives off old soul and R&B vibes and has a calming melody with underlying bass and a slowed-down beat. Most of the song could be compared to Genuine’s famous hit ‘Pony’, as it entails almost the same beat sequence and rhythm. ‘Ego’ ends the album as a soulful, ‘70s beat and melody unfolds in front of listeners. It ends with the same calming element as ‘Fever’ and provides a tranquil ending to the work of art. Overall, this album is the best work that Daye has released so far, and hopefully, he will deliver an album as “sweet” as this one in the future. The album displayed a story from the beginning to the end, leaving listeners wondering who was the girl Daye sang his heart out

for. Maybe she was a figment of his imagination, someone from his past or someone he is currently trying to reconcile with. Daye displayed his innermost emotions, desires and hopes within this masterpiece. ‘CandyDrip’ should be available for Grammy nominations and is highly recommended to music-lovers. Rating: 10/10 Koby: Grammy-Nominated R&B artist Lucky Daye dropped his second album, titled ‘Candydrip’ last Friday. ‘Candydrip’ follows his last project ‘Table for Two’, an EP that was nominated for a Grammy earlier this year for Best Progressive R&B Album. ‘Candydrip’ has 17 tracks on this project and the run time comes in at under an hour at 57 minutes--maximizing the project’s play time.

This album is primarily Daye, but has a handful of features. They include Smino, Lil Durk, and Chiiild. This is not surprising because Daye’s previous album, ‘Painted’, didn’t have many features. Three singles were released before the debut of ‘Candydrip’: ‘Over’, ‘Candydrip’ and ‘NWA’ featuring Lil Durk, which was the most surprising feature. The most popular single was ‘Over’ and is sampled from the song ‘HalfCrazy’ by Musiq Soulchild. ‘Candydrip’ was excellent, diving into varying styles of music including face paced to transitioning to slower paced selections. Excluding singles, standout tracks included ‘Deserve’, ‘Compassion’ and ‘Cherry Forest’. “Cherry Forest’ is worthy of back to back plays. From the instrumental to the background vocals, it delivers a catchy and infectious tune. ‘Deserve’ was “deserving” of its recognition due to the melodic patterns that it portrayed. There are also tracks on the album that listeners will grow to love. ‘Guess’ is an example of those songs, proving to be an exceptional song. ‘Candydrip’ is a strong contender for album of the year in the R&B field. Daye has consistently kept up his game within the industry and hasn’t missed a single “beat”. There are some features missing from this album that would have elevated it. An appearance from Kehlani, Snoh Aalegra or Anderson Paak would have given it more diversity. However, this was a good follow up album for Daye and his future in the industry ‘dripping’ with success. MARCH 23, 2022 WWW.STUDENTPRINTZ.COM Southern Miss Baseball wins series against FAU Southern Miss pressured the Owls in the bottom of the seventh. After Will McGillis reached on an FAU error and Carson Paetow singled, Rodrigo Montenegro sac-bunted and pushed both runners in scoring position. “He doesn’t get called upon to do a lot of, you know, we had just routine groundballs and scoring runs,” Berry said. “But it was just situational baseball that kept us in the game today.” Gabe Montenegro got an RBI groundout to tie the game at 4 in the bottom of the seventh. Southern Miss took the lead for good in the seventh as a wild pitch scored Paetow from third. The Golden Eagles scored a security run in the bottom of the eighth when the Owls walked Montenegro with the bases loaded.

outhern Miss started out conference play with two victories over FAU but fell in the final match against the Owls.

Game One: Danny Lynch has not had many extra-base hits this year; in fact, he only had one other one the entire season, which was a home run against Alabama. He picked a convenient time to get his second one with a walkoff home run that drove two runs to secure a game one victory over Florida Atlantic in the conference opener. “He threw me a changeup in the dirt, and I took it, and I knew he wasn’t going to walk me because we already had Sarge on first,” Lynch said. “I knew he was gonna come with the fastball next.” Lynch said he knew the ball was gone as soon as it came off the bat. Lynch finished the game going 2-4 with two RBIs, both on the game-winning home run. “He has the ability to do that. This one was a walk-off, but it couldn’t have come at a better and bigger time.” Head Coach Scott Berry said. The game started rocky for the Golden Eagles, as their best pitcher by far all season Tanner Hall, struggled to get it going early. The Owls scored two runs in the top of the first and one

Game Three: Southern Miss celebrates Lynch’s walk-off home run.

more in the top of the third to take a 3-0 advantage. “This team is a good team, and the way their lefties are crowding the plate, the umpire taking away that inner half a little bit, it was definitely a tougher night to pitch,” Hall said. “Danny came up to me and told me, ‘hey man, it happens, it’s not a big deal just go out and do your thing,’ [and] I went back out and started rolling a little.” Hall then sat down 13 of the next 14 batters he faced after the first inning. Southern Miss trailed by three in the bottom of the third and used a batting around inning to take the lead back after plating five runs in the third. That was the most runs scored in a single inning for the Golden Eagles all season. “Our guys competed, and their guy on the mound made quality pitches; the ball found places where it was tough for them to make those plays,” Berry said. the game in the sixth inning, to which Southern Miss responded in the seventh inning by reclaiming the lead after an RBI single by Carson Paetow and then an unearned run thanks to an error by the Owls. Southern Miss led 7-5 going into the ninth inning and got the Owls down to their final out. The Owls responded with three straight hits to tie the game at seven. Then Lynch saved the day with his walk-off homer. “I couldn’t be more proud of our guys and how they just fought and competed all the way to the end,” Berry said. Game Two: Southern Miss found itself trailing by multiple runs to FAU for the second game in the row but again rallied and came out on top 6-4. “It’s just staying the course of the game and trying to compete for every inning and not giving any up.” Berry said. Reece Ewing started the scoring in the bottom of the fourth inning. It would be Ewing’s fifth home run on the season, giving Southern Miss a 1-0 advantage. Florida Atlantic then responded with two quick base hits and Nolan Schanuel smacked a three-run homer to right field to give the Owls a 3-1 advantage. Florida Atlantic added another run in the top of the sixth, with an RBI double by Gabriel Ricones Jr. Southern Miss responded in the bottom of the sixth with two runs of their own thanks to an RBI single by Dustin Dickerson and an RBI groundout by Christopher Sargent.

The Golden Eagles could not finish the sweep, falling to a fierce late push by Florida Atlantic. After holding a 2-1 lead since the fourth, FAU notched five runs in the eighth inning to hand Southern Miss its first conference loss of the season. “We are 2-3 on Sundays,” Berry said. “We need to learn how to win there. More importantly, we have had two opportunities on Sundays now to sweep on series and we just haven’t gotten the job outside of opening weekend against North Alabama.” The Golden Eagles are now 2-3 on Sunday matchups, while 7-3 in Friday and Saturday series matches. Southern Miss got off to a strong start, though, catapulted by a solo home run in the second by Carson Paetow and then another solo home run from Will McGillis in the fourth. Starting pitcher Hurston Waldrep limited the Owls to one run through over five innings, striking out 11 batters and allowing five hits and one walk. After Waldrep, Southern Miss struggled in the bullpen, switching six pitchers and allowing nine hits through the remaining four frames. Ben Ethridge (1-3) earned his third loss of the season after allowing two hits and two runs in a little more of an inning played. What’s Next: The Golden Eagles’ next conference matchup is on the road as they take on Western Kentucky. The Hilltoppers are 9-10 as of March 22, 2022 and 1-2 in conference play after a series loss to Charlotte. Southern Miss won four of its five

matches against Western Kentucky last season.
