Southern Miss head coach Todd Monken could not have said it better.

“Sometimes things just go your way,” Monken said. “A lot of things went our way. We’ve had plenty of things that haven’t gone our way, and it’s about time.”

And boy did things go Southern Miss’ way, as the Golden Eagles demolished rival Louisiana Tech, 58-24, in a game most thought would come down to the wire.

The first half was dominated

by USM on both sides of the ball, thanks to aggressive coaching

by Monken. Up 14-3, Monken called for his signature onside kick, and USM took advantage with one of the most spectacular plays in USM history.

Wide receiver Michael Thomas hauled in a one-handed touchdown catch that landed Thomas in the SportsCenter Top 10 plays. The catch gave USM a 21-3 lead and all the momentum.

A few minutes later, La. Tech coughed up the ball on a punt, which allowed a Stephen Brauchle field goal.

But that turnover before the half would start a chain reaction of turnovers that followed in the second half.

Going into halftime with a 24-10 lead, the Golden Eagles had complete control. That is,

until Bulldog quarterback Jeff Driskel hit running back Kenneth Dixon on a 43-yard swing pass for a touchdown, and suddenly the dominant first half Southern Miss played was cut down to just a one score lead.

But then it happened. Twentyseven unanswered points—21 of those within 45 seconds—and three Bulldog turnovers gave USM a 51-17 lead with 14:41 left in the game.

Terrick Wright, who stepped in for the injured Elijah Parker, was the main catalyst. Wright ended up with a fumble recovery and an interception in that span.

“Really, I was just trying to do something for the team, trying to make the team better,” Wright said. “Knowing that we need a big play, before I stepped out on the field, I talked to my brothers Mike Smith and (Brian Anderson) and we said we need a big play no matter where it comes from.”

Ito Smith, who had a career day, deserves credit as well.

Smith had three carries after those three turnovers and turned them into three consecutive touchdowns. Smith finished with 164 rushing yards on the day.

Defensive coordinator Dave Duggan said he had never seen anything like the 21-point sequence in his coaching career.

“I haven’t been a part of anything like that,” Duggan said.

Yet to smile, Monken knows his team has yet to reach the pinnacle of their season. One more challenge stands in the way: Western Kentucky. The Hilltoppers blasted Marshall, 49-28, for the Eastern Division championship in Conference USA. “It’s about getting bowleligible,” Monken said. “That’s the barometer (of) your program, and then the second part is (this): how do you win the West?

Now we have to go back on the road. We knew that was going to be the case. If you want to win it, you have to do it on the road.

We’ll be ready this week. We’ll expect their best, and they sure as heck can expect ours.”

Southern Miss travels to Bowling Green, Kentucky, to square off with Western Kentucky for the Conference USA Championship. Kickoff is set for 11 a.m.

Southern Miss students win Cotton Merchandising Competition awards Southern Miss Now

University of Southern Mississippi business students captured four out of eight awards presented at the Mississippi Cotton Merchandising Competition held Nov. 20 at Mississippi State University in Starkville.

While 45 merchandising plans were entered in the completion, only 17 were chosen for the final competition at Mississippi State University.

Southern Miss students who took home awards included the following: Angela Kelly (interdisciplinary studies major with emphases in merchandising and graphic design) and Esther Gaffney (interior design major) who won the grand prize for Best in Show; Morgan McQueen (merchandising major) who won first place in the T-shirt/Denim Category; Emily Stokely, Elise Casadaban and Kolbe Slote

(interior design majors) who won first place in Textile/Apparel Products Category; Ellen Douglas (communication studies major minoring in merchandising) who won second place in the Textile/ Apparel Products Category.

These students were all enrolled in merchandising courses and entered the competition as part of class projects for Textiles Industrial Complex, a junior level merchandising course and international policy and retail strategy, a senior level merchandising course.

The competition was made possible by a grant from the Importer Support Program of the Cotton Board and Cotton Incorporated, and was a joint partnership between the three Mississippi universities, which offer fashion merchandising programs: The University of Southern Mississippi, Delta State University and Mississippi State University.

Binge-watching new norm, holds risks Joshua Starr Printz Reporter

Freshman biological science major RJ Palmer enjoys college life at The University of Southern Mississippi. Taking his first semester in stride, he has joined student organizations and stuck to set priorities.

Near midnight on a brisk November day, having finished reading for his “really cool” anthropology 101 course, Palmer logged out of a computer in the Cook Library Learning Commons and prepared to walk back to his Wilber Hall dorm room. As Palmer wrapped up, a seemingly weary student a few seats away sat back in a faux-leather computer chair for a prolonged session of video streaming.

According to a 2013 survey of 1,500 streaming subscribers, Netflix found bingeing has become a normative viewing method for users, with 61 percent reporting to have binged.

Keith Hill, iTech operations and infrastructure director at USM, said it is not unusual for services like Netflix and Hulu to rank near the top of bandwidth consumption on the university’s network. For a period demarcated Nov. 16 at noon and Nov. 17 at 4 p.m., iTech reported Netflix ranked seventh in bandwidth

consumption with 109,832 connections transferring nearly 200 gigabytes of data.

Like many students, faculty and staff on campus, Palmer, too, has occasionally spent downtime bingeing on a favorite show.

“There was an instance during my summer break that my mom and I watched 10 consecutive episodes of ‘Supernatural,’” Palmer said. “We didn’t really go into it with the intention of actually watching the 10 episodes back to back, but, after like a couple episodes, we would say, ‘Maybe we could watch one more.’”

As media bingeing becomes the norm, interest in the health consequences of bingewatching has grown, and social researchers have turned their attention to address the burgeoning trend.

Binge-watching research was still in its infancy in 2012 when Siena College student researcher Chad Bingo and marketing professor Raj Devasagayam began studying the potential effects of the practice.

Bingo said terms like “marathoning” and “weekending” harken back to the days of VHS and DVD box sets. However, he and Devasagayam first became interested in the binge-watching phenomenon following the release of the Netflix original

series “House of Cards.”

Among their observations, Bingo said they found that with original programming like “House of Cards,” services like Netflix exclude recaps from the beginnings of episodes and structure programming to hook viewers, which, along with incorporated auto-play functions between episodes, encourage continuous watching.

“Media bingeing itself has been around—it just hasn’t come to life until the last couple years, because now it is becoming the (preferred) method of viewing,” Bingo said. “And as I mentioned in the report a couple times, Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime— they’re all pushing for this type of series because it’s more effective.”

After honing its focus through a survey of 550 respondents, the researchers explored bingeing activity through a series of focus groups. In their report, “Media Bingeing: A Qualitative Study of Psychological Influences,” Bingo and Devasagayam noted potential negative mental health effects of binge-watching and concluded the study’s focus groups provided preliminary evidence to suggest bingewatching can be both addictive and dependence forming.

However, the study noted further quantitative research was necessary to generalize their findings.

“We’ve had a couple people in our focus groups say they wouldn’t renew their Netflix subscriptions until they were done with their semester in college—or they wouldn’t start a show until they finished their exam,” Bingo said. “They were limiting themselves on purpose, because they knew if they started watching the show, they would just be hooked, and that’s all that they would be thinking about.”

Since 2014 when the Siena College study was released, subsequent research has indeed come to similar conclusions.

A month before the release of the most recent “House of Cards” season in February, University of Texas doctoral students Yoon Hi Sung and Eun Yeon Kang and professor Wei-Na Lee announced they found binge-watching can be addictive, having surveyed 316 participants aged 18 to 29. Furthermore, they found binge-watching may be used as an escapist strategy to avoid negative feelings for those who feel depressed or lonely.

Mental health counselor Matt Quin of USM Student Counseling Services said avoidance behaviors are common with depression and anxiety. He said if students are concerned with their media consumption habits, the university’s mental health services can help them take

stock of any mental or physical health consequences and treat their under issues.

“Binge-watching specifically is a negative skill, because any time it causes you to put off something that needs to be addressed, then it can cause procrastination,” Quin said. “It can cause a student to be more anxious about a problem.

“And then that anxiety causes them to feel more depressed about the problem, isolate from their friends and from their family, not go to class.

Therefore, they’re more behind, and it creates this snowball effect, and the mental health problems just worsen and deepen because of it.”

Quin said depression, in addition to anxiety and academic and relationship problems, is one of the top reasons students get counseling from Student Counseling Services, and he recommends students seek help sooner rather than later if they are having problems.

“All of the mental health services here at USM are free, and they will always be free as long as you’re here,” Quin said.

“I just recommend asking—that will be the hardest part. After that, it gets easier.”

Retailers avoid sales day chaos Hiba Tahir

Printz Reporter Every year, the U.S. celebrates its largest annual sales bonanza during Black Friday.

The event traditionally begins the day after Thanksgiving and marks the start of the Christmas shopping season.

However, as consumer demands increase and online shopping becomes more and more prevalent, sales have been pushed further and further forward until they have encroached upon Thanksgiving holiday hours. The one-day shopping holiday has morphed into a five-day event spawning Grey Thursday, Small Business Saturday/Sunday and Cyber Monday.

“The U.S. shopping holiday is a cash cow for retailers, a sporting event for deal hunters and a stressful day for most shoppers,” said Sarah Mitroff, CNET associate editor, in a recent CNET article.“What was once the start of the holiday shopping season has become a mess of traffic jams, long lines and ravaged stores. Every year, it’s looking better to just stay at home, and that might be the smartest move.”

According to the annual National Retail Federation survey, 99.8 million people intended to shop on Black Friday this year, as opposed to the 95.5 million shoppers who said they would go last year. Furthermore, 78.5 million people intended to shop on Cyber Monday.

“Retailers have done a tremendous job meeting the customer in the middle this holiday season, giving them both an unforgettable in-store experience that is still critical to any retailer’s success, and a unique opportunity to find great deals without ever having to leave home through mobile and online promotions,” said NRF president and CEO Matthew Shay.

However—and in spite of increasing reports of injuries—86.9 million people actually did make it out to the sales in the lowest numbers since the 85 million who made it out in 2011.

Many factors have contributed to this decline in retail interest. Everything from credit card debt to recurrent government debt crises have been blamed; however, some retailers believe increasing disenchantment is the real problem, and frenzied consumerism the true culprit.

outdoor gear and sporting goods retailer Recreational Equipment, Inc., decided to “cancel” Black Friday this year by closing all 143 stores and launching a campaign that encourages people to spend time outside instead.

REI gave most of its employees a paid day off and asked customers to share their Back Friday adventures with the #OptOutside hashtag.

REI president and CEO Jerry Stritzke said he was initially hesitant about closing, as Black Friday has consistently been a top 10 sales day for the company.

“Any retailer that hears this will be startled by the idea,” he said. “As a co-op, we define success a little differently. It’s much broader than just money.

How effectively do we get people outside?”

The overwhelmingly positive response to Stritzke’s decision caused several other outdoorfocused companies to follow suit. Outdoor Research, Clif Bar and Gregory Packs were some of the companies who decided to give their own employees the day off and

encourage their customers to enjoy the outdoors with REI’s #OptOutside hashtag.

The campaign was massively successful and reached over a million people. On its website, REI said more individuals, organizations, park systems and outdoor companies are signing on every day, and the campaign’s success has inspired them to “begin a series of conversations, events, actions and stories that explore what it means to truly opt outside and put the outdoors at the center of a life” starting in January.

Ken Perkins, president of the research and data firm Retail Metrics, believes REI is in a good position to get away with such a bold move as a smaller, niche retailer.

“It makes it a lot easier for them to do this than it would for a publicly traded company,” Perkins said.

Although no other major retailers closed their doors on Black Friday, several decided to remain closed on Thanksgiving Day to allow their employees time to enjoy the holiday this year.

Report reveals black women’s economic woes Nan Beauti Printz Reporter

A recent report by the Southern Rural Black Women’s Initiative (SRBWI) said that black women living in rural Mississippi experience imbalanced economic issues. The report said that many gaps exist between black women and other groups in jobs and pay.

The SRBWI is a collective of female leaders across the state, aimed at uplifting black women and families in impoverished communities.

The cooperative promotes a human rights agenda in the United States designed to eliminate

historical race, class, cultural, religious and gender barriers experienced by black women in the rural South.

“These people want to work,” said Gloria Sturdevant, an adviser for the Women for Agriculture cooperative. “They want to create better lifestyles for their families and their children.”

The SRBWI hopes to change the way black women live in Mississippi and the way the state handles job creation. Not only black women face job shortages, but there also exists a lack of Internet access, dependable transportation and quality grocery stores. These deficiencies prevent families in the rural South

from being able to attain jobs, health care and education.

Rural Mississippi houses a large number of low-income families. Women and these families are becoming more reliant on government support as economic endeavors burden their lifestyles.

A report entitled “Unequal Lives: The State of Black Women and Their Families” points out that more than 1 in 4 children are born into poverty in Mississippi— many to single mothers. Unemployment for black women in rural counties in the state is nearly 24 percent—four times higher than white women. Because of this incongruity in opportunity,

the group intends to move toward more equality by raising the employment of black women.

According to the report, 59 percent of Mississippians lack Internet access, the lowest rate in the country. The report was unveiled at the state Capitol on Nov. 10.

“There must be a change not only to move Mississippi forward, but primarily to move these families forward because they’re at the bottom of the scale,” said Oleta Fitzgerald, director of the Children’s Defense Fund’s Southern Regional Office, to the Clarion-Ledger.

Fitzgerald said that women in the rural South are limited by

their ability to access technology and transportation.

“If jobs are not in your community, you don’t have transportation, we don’t have transportation systems, and how do you do job search?” Fitzgerald said.

Throughout history, black women have served as pillars of the South, enriching its culture as mothers, aunts, innovators, leaders, educators and activists in their communities. Their mindsets of ardor for their families and communities are still in place today. The SRBWI exists to find solutions to societal problems like poverty and inequality in American areas that need the most support.

Hub City hosts litany of holiday events Nan Beauti Printz Reporter

After the haste of Thanksgiving and Black Friday, members of Hattiesburg and The University of Southern Mississippi are in full holiday swing as volunteer opportunities grow and the giving spirits are lit. From food drives to donating books and toys, Hattiesburg offers a wide range of volunteer opportunities to those seeking to serve the community and beyond.

The Salvation Army offers a variety of methods to volunteer, whether help is needed to distribute meals to the less fortunate or to organize donated items. The Salvation Army’s Angel Tree Program provides new clothing and toys for children of in-need families through the support of donors and citizens annually. Volunteers can also help with Holiday Meals, where food boxes are prepared and given out to families for the holidays.

The University of Southern Mississippi will participate in the holiday season with the Student Government Association’s annual philanthropy event “Lighting the Way of the Holidays” this Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. on the south lawn of the Aubrey K. Lucas Administration Building. Festivities include musical performances by the Southern Bell Tones, the AfroAmerican Student Organization gospel choir and Spirit of Southern, lighting of the Southern Miss Christmas tree in the front of campus and a variety of activities for all ages.

“This year we hope to get the community and the campus more involved,” said Victoria Robertson, co-director of Lighting the Way. “Every year the event gets a little bit larger and we hope for this to continue. We look forward to lighting the tree and seeing all the lanterns lit up around the area. Lighting the Way is a great

tradition at Southern Mississippi, and we are excited to start off the holiday season.”

With each Lighting the Way event, SGA sponsors a local charity. This year, SGA will sell lanterns to support Homes of Hope for Children, a nonprofit organization meant to serve children in crisis. SGA’s goal is to raise around $2,000 for Homes of Hope for Children.

“We wanted to choose a philanthropy that was local to the area and the community,” said SGA Chief of Staff Katherine Brewer. “SGA is excited to be given the chance to give back to the community.”

This event is free and open to the public. University and community members are encouraged to attend Lighting the Way and support the SGA and Homes of Hope for Children.

The Hattiesburg Zoo will host a series of holiday events called Jingle in the Jungle as a way to provide families an enjoyable visit. Christmas-related events like “Vintage Holiday Nights: A Magical Christmas Event,” as well as train rides and educational camps, will be held at the zoo throughout December.

Extra Table is a nonprofit organization committed to end hunger in Mississippi. This year, Extra Table wishes to provide local feeding agencies in the Pine Belt with healthy food to feed the hungry.

The organization launched its “Fifty in Fifteen” initiative, a 12-month campaign to send 50 tons of food to soup kitchens and food pantries in the area by the end of the year.

Volunteers are encouraged to donate food to the Extra Table in support of its initiative.

The Historic Saenger Theater in downtown Hattiesburg has a holiday lineup that will illuminate the holiday cheer. “The Forgotten Carols Musical,” which tells a historic

Christmas story, will be Dec. 12 at 7 p.m. at the Saenger Theater.

The Hattiesburg Jaycees will present the annual Hattiesburg Christmas Parade “’Twas the Lights Before Christmas” this Thursday at 5:30 p.m. Following the parade, the city’s annual Christmas tree lighting will take place in Town Square Park.

With volunteer service activities and holiday events, the city and university are setting the spirit for the Christmas season. A number of local charities and organizations are always seeking community members’ time and effort to give back, giving some students the advantage to gain volunteer hours and stay busy during the break.

Volunteer Hattiesburg, a service agency meant to mobilize citizens of the Southeast, offers a list of volunteer opportunities in the area for people seeking to give back to the community.

Thanksgiving has come and gone, and the hunt for the best discounts has just begun.

Perhaps this is a part of what makes the holiday season most alluring, or maybe it’s the perfect time of year for companies to capitalize on producthungry consumers. Nevertheless, the morning after our day of thanks has proved to be one of the market’s most profitable days and has kept millions of customers lining up year after year.

However, with Black Friday causing newsworthy chaos in years past, many sale hunters have opted to do their shopping from the comfort of their beds with the click of a button.

On the Monday after Thanksgiving, the Internet is the only shop people are interested in since it began its initial response to Black Friday in the early 2000s. As a gift to customers around the country, online shops have put their best products on sale for those who enjoy avoiding the hassle of

traditional shopping. Consumers spend hundreds through these deals and walk away feeling like they’ve cheated the system.

But if you’re a true shopaholic and play the game right, you’d know that you can find the same online deals yearround—it’s all about perspective. For instance, take Zara, the high-end streetwear store.

If you shop its end-of-summer sale, you are guaranteed to find clothing for less than half its original price. Also, by shopping clearance at online stores like Urban Outfitters or Forever 21, you’ll be able to save a few bucks for an item more worth your money.

The key to online shopping is to shop smart and with a budget. It also helps to sign up for emails from retailers alerting you of their current sales.

If you are looking for a specific item, check multiple sites before settling on the bestpriced. If you take your online shopping as seriously as you take your traditional shopping, then everyday can be as successful as Cyber Monday.

The “Hunger Games” trilogy concludes with “Mockingjay, Part 2,” having premiered Nov. 20. The movie, based on Suzanne Collins’ bestselling series, boasted an estimated $101 million during its opening weekend in the U.S. Worldwide, “Mockingjay, Part 2” grossed more than $247 million.

Katniss Everdeen has managed to inspire not only those around her within the story, but also viewers around the globe. Her strength is evident in the first scene after her brutal encounter with Peeta post-release from President Snow’s captivity. In fact, her strength is evident throughout the entirety of the movie as she deals with losing people she loves.

Katniss is forced to face the

inevitable: The rebels finally close in on the Capitol to destroy President Snow and his followers. But as death affects everyone around her, does revenge justify the lives lost?

In one particular scene, Katniss begins to blame herself for all those who have been claimed by the dangerous games played in Panem. Peeta regains his memories, and he calms Katniss by saying their lives always belonged to President Snow. But if Katniss was able to succeed in her plans to kill Snow, then the lives lost would belong to the people who lost them.

Each individual made a choice to stand next to Katniss, because she gave them hope, and if they lost their lives for that hope, then their lives meant something instead of representing another meaningless boom and picture in the sky by the hands of the cynical President Snow.

As the movie dwindles to its end, President Coin, the leader of the rebels, begins to unravel at the edges. Katniss has to make yet another difficult decision. This decision in particular, however, might be the last one to be made due to the severity of her choice.

“Mockingjay, Part 2” is a bittersweet moment for “Hunger Games” fans. Although the series has come to an end, it will be remembered for its inspirational motifs. Katniss Everdeen gave a new definition to the word hero. A hero is not always someone who flies in the sky and can lift a plane. A hero can be a regular girl who is able to overcome unfortunate circumstances, persuade the hearts of others and become a symbol of hope.

This movie is awesome.

Only one question remains: Can this franchise really be called a trilogy if the final movie is divided into two parts?

Lady Eagles win their 19th Thanksgiving Classic Deantae Smith Sports Editor

The Lady Eagles were crowned champions of the Lady Eagle Thanksgiving Classic after defeating Mississippi Valley State University in the opening round and Samford University in the championship game.

In the first quarter against MVSU, the Lady Eagles led the Devilettes by a slim margin, 2118. Southern Miss shot 55 percent from the field, while the Devilettes shot 53 percent.

Mississippi Valley gained the lead early in the second quarter. The two teams battled backand-forth throughout the quarter, but two Jayla King free throws with seconds left gave the Lady Eagles a 31-29 lead at halftime.

The Lady Eagles were outscored in the quarter, 11-10.

The Lady Eagles have mentioned they were a second

half team since the start of the season.

“We want that third quarter to be the identity of our team,” said head coach Joye Lee-McNelis.

The Lady Eagles stretched their lead after the break. The Lady Eagles outscored the Devilettes 25-10 in the third quarter with 16 points in the paint.

The Lady Eagles also had 15 points off of turnovers, which gave them a 56-39 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

“It was spurred by several players who got some jumps and trap action which that kind of gave us some energy,” LeeMcNelis said.

The Devilettes did not go down without a fight, as they dominated the Lady Eagles in the paint during the fourth quarter, outscoring the Lady Eagles 12-2. Despite being outscored in the paint and in the quarter, 16-15, the Lady Eagles still held

a comfortable lead off of their third quarter.

King led the team with 27 points. Lashyra Cotton shot 70 percent from the field and added 14 points. Shayla King led the Lady Eagles in rebounds with eight.

The Lady Eagles’ backcourt outside of Brittanny Dinkins and King, struggled. Keri JewettGiles, Tajanay Veiga and Jerontay Clemons combined for seven points, all scored by Clemons.

Samford defeated Nicholls State to advance to the championship game to face the Lady Eagles.

Against Samford, the Lady Eagles started off dominant on the defensive side of the floor, forcing the Bulldogs to shoot 33 percent in the first half.

Southern Miss extended their lead in second quarter and outscored the Bulldogs 20-16. The Lady Eagles started an 8-2 run to start the quarter in taking a 19-12 lead. The Lady Eagles eventually led by as many as eight in the quarter and led 3126 at the half.

Southern Miss was leading 3628, when the Bulldogs scored six straight points to cut the lead to 36-34. The teams traded points before Caitlin Jenkins and Jewett-Giles hit back-to-back shots.

Samford closed out the final two minutes with a 6-4 run and outscored the Lady Eagles 16-15 in the third quarter, which shrank the Southern Miss lead to 46-42 by the end of the third quarter.

The Lady Eagles scored six straight points to start the final quarter, taking a double-digit lead for the first time in the game.

The Lady Eagles went cold from

the field and did not score a field goal for the remainder of the quarter.

But Samford was unable to capitalize on the Lady Eagles’ struggles. The Bulldogs had their own shooting woes. Samford cut the lead to 52-47, but the game was won from the line as Jewett-Giles connected on 4-of-6 from the line in the final seconds of the game, giving the Lady Eagles the 56-48 victory.

Jenkins quietly registered a double-double, as she was able to score a team-high 11 points and snag 11 rebounds.

Nicholls State defeated Mississippi Valley 63-54 in the consolation game. King was named the tournament’s MVP. Cotton was named to the all-tournament team The Lady Eagles return to the court on Dec. 1, when they take on Tennessee Tech in Cookeville, Tennessee, at 6 p.m.

Southern Miss continued its winless campaign on Saturday when it traveled to Morehead State, losing 61-46.

The Golden Eagles had their second lowest scoring output of the season, trailing only their 18-point season-opening loss to Memphis.

Head coach Doc Sadler employed Raheem Watts, Kourtlin Jackson, Khari Price, Kelvin Blevins and Michael O’Donnell in his starting lineup, but they only scored a combined 20 points on 3-of-17 shooting from the field.

This lineup got behind early to the Eagles 8-0 in the first three minutes, and 10-3 just four minutes into the first half. The Golden Eagles did not have 10 points in the contest until seven minutes left in the half.

At halftime, the Golden Eagles were limited to 27 percent shooting from the field, and 38 percent shooting from threepoint range. No player attempted more than four shots, and no Golden Eagle had more than six points in the half as USM trailed 30-16 at halfrime.

“Defensively, I knew going into the game they were going to be very aggressive, and they were,” Sadler said. “We weren’t quite ready for what they gave us.”

fell behind by 20 points, 44-24.

Even though there were over 11 minutes left to make some sort of comeback, the final outcome was never in question. Despite scoring 30 points in the second half, the Golden Eagles were no match for Morehead State.

“They got after us and it would have been easy to take a step back, but we didn’t,” Sadler said. “Even though we didn’t get the win, there were some positive things I saw that we can build on.”

Freshman guard Robert Thomas III led the Golden Eagles in scoring with 13 points off the bench, and right behind him in scoring was sharp-shooting transfer guard Michael Ramey with 11 points.

The 15-point loss on the scoreboard did not justify the discrepancy on the floor. Across the board, Southern Miss wwas dominated.

“Once we settled down a little bit and went with a much smaller lineup, we handled the pressure a little bit better,” Sadler said. “I was pleased that our guys continued to compete.”

The Golden Eagles were outrebounded by Morehead State, and had a lesser shooting percentage. USM also had more turnovers and more personal fouls.

The Golden Eagles will return to action on Dec. 1 against Troy in Troy, Alabama. Tipoff is at 7 p.m.
