USM falls short in weekend C-USA series, 2-1 KYLE WILLIAMS printz reporter After a 10 - 8 loss Wednesday against Tulane, Southern Miss (30 - 12, C-USA 13 - 5) hosted a threegame weekend series against Old Dominion (28 - 12, C-USA 12 - 6), losing 2 - 1.

“I was real proud of the way our team came out in all phases,” said Southern Miss coach Scott Berry.

“Defensively, we played very well, and of course, offensively, I thought we had a great approach.”

Friday’s contest resulted in a 10 - 2 win for the Golden Eagles as they collected 12 hits on the night.

Southern Miss scored runs in five consecutive innings, the third frame being a six-run inning for the Golden Eagles.

Two-out hitting has been Southern Miss’ strength all season, and that did not change in Friday’s contest.

Jake Viaene and Cole Donaldson walked, but Donaldson walked with the bases loaded to bring home Mason Irby in the third inning to put USM up 3 - 1. Matthew Guidry then delivered a three-RBI double to push the Southern Miss lead to 6 - 1. LeeMarcus Boyd would finish the offensive explosion for Southern Miss with an RBI-double and a stolen base that led to him scoring after a throwing error, 8 - 1.

Game two proved stats do not tell the whole story. Southern Miss collected 11 runs off of 14 hits but fell short in the contest, 13 - 11.

Old Dominion collected 13 runs off of 13 hits and stole the contest in the top of the ninth inning with a four-run inning.

Southern Miss’ consecutive scoring in game one was huge to their success in claiming the victory, but in game two, their scoring came in bulk less often.

After claiming an early 4 - 0 lead in the first inning, the Golden Eagles’ next four innings resulted in zeros across the scoreboard. While Southern Miss remained scoreless, Old Dominion’s offense caught fire and scored eight runs off of nine hits to take the lead, 8 - 4.

The Golden Eagles found their offense again in the sixth and ninth inning, scoring six runs in each, but this would not be enough as the four-run inning Old Dominion had in the top of the ninth solidified

the win, 13 - 11.

In game three, Southern Miss’ offense did not score a run until the fifth inning. Southern Miss concluded their scoring in the sixth with only two runs for the

entire game. Southern Miss allowed Old Dominion to record nine runs off of 18 hits, while they recorded two runs off of six hits. Similar to the second game, long scoreless stretches were detrimental to the

Golden Eagles as they lost the contest, 9 - 2.

Southern Miss will attempt to redeem themselves Tuesday against South Alabama. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m.

Three-day conference features 50 scholars PRESS RELEASE On March 2 through 4, The University of Southern Mississippi English Graduate Organization and C4W, the graduate student organization in the Center for Writers, in partnership with the Mississippi Humanities Council and the Hattiesburg Arts Council, hosted “Bodies of Work: The Human Body in Various Forms,” a conference to showcase critical and creative scholarly work.

The interdisciplinary conference featured academic and creative readings from 50 scholars from around the country. The topic of the body allowed for a broad range of inquiry and conversation between many communities, from athletes to sociologists to parents to artists.

Finance committee chair, Max Macpherson said the main objective of the conference was to be both organized by and inclusive of all types of bodies and disciplines.

“We wanted all participants and audience members to feel included to the best of our ability, and intend to utilize facilities, equipment and language that accommodates everyone,” Macpherson said.

Poet Brandi George kicked off the conference at the Thirsty Hippo with

an experimental, polyvocalic poetry reading of her book-length poem “Faun.” The performance included a dozen or so participants from the English Department who read in the voices of birds, trees, stones and persons.

Conference co-chair Mary Stephens said they were grateful for George sharing her unpublished performance piece with our audience.

“Her piece truly embodied the theme of the conference in tone but also in its performativity—incorporating physical bodies on stage that personified various pieces of nature,” George said.

Programming Chair Thomas Holmes said that one of the highlights of the conference was hearing from Jeannine Hall Gailey, former Poet Laureate of Redmond, WA. Gailey entertained the audience with several poems about fairy tales, superheroes, villainesses, robots and zombies and answered questions via Skype. The evening’s events ended with readings by Madison Etheridge, Hiba Tahir, Garrett Ashley and Mary Ryan Karnes of the Center for Writers at T-Bones Records & Café.

and Phantom Zones: Ecocriticism and the Liminal from ‘Invisible Man’ to the ‘Walking Dead.’” Throughout the presentation, he used ecocriticism to connect nature with the deteriorating bodies and post-destruction landscapes of horror.

The conference culminated in a reading by Mississippi Poet Laureate

Beth Ann Fennelly at Oddfellows Gallery in Downtown Hattiesburg. She read selections from each of her books, including a piece from her forthcoming book, ”Heating & Cooling: 52 MicroMemoirs,” which will be published by W. W. Norton in October.

April brings showers of shows to Dollar Box DAISY STUTTS photo editor While the rest of the city embraces the beautiful weather of the season, downtown venues are planning busy calendars of entertainment events to celebrate as well.

Ben Shemper, owner of the Dollar Box Showroom and Benny’s Boom Boom Room, knows shows. Multiple crowd favorites will return to the Dollar Box in the next few weeks.

To follow up last month’s Flow Tribe show, The Dollar Box Showroom is bringing back The Weeks, a Mississippi original. The Weeks are bringing their newest album tour, “Easy,” to Hattiesburg’s Weeks fans. Tickets for the event can be bought online or at the venue. The Lonely Biscuits, an alt-rock band native to Nashville, will open for The Weeks at 9 p.m. to start off the show, welcoming The Weeks to the stage around 10 p.m.

The Weeks are a Jackson-born group composed of four members and can be described as an indie-Southern rock band with influences of country and grunge rock, an overall unique sound true to Mississippi’s musical roots. The Weeks are currently on their first tour of their recent release “Easy,” which has brought them to cities all over the U.S., beginning in Cleveland, Miss. and wrapping up in Nashville. On tour with The Weeks, the Lonely Biscuits are a complementary alternative sound to the The Weeks grungy

The show is expected to have a huge turnout, and tickets for the event are going quickly. They can be purchased on ticketmaster.com or by contacting the Dollar Box Showroom for information.

To conclude the school year for Southern Miss, Afroman will be

making a return to the Dollar Box. This will bring the year to a truly unforgettable close as Hattiesburg experiences a lineup like Flow Tribe, The Weeks and Afroman.

Afroman is a Hattiesburg nativerapper himself, and always brings a huge crowd out for shows in his hometown. Much of his music was

inspired here in Hattiesburg, giving him a great connection to the music community and altogether making for one of the city’s favorite music events of the year.

The Dollar Box will be hosting Afroman on May 12, the same night of the Southern Miss graduation ceremony. The show will begin at

10:30 p.m. and openers are still to be announced; tickets for this event can also be purchased online or at the venue.

Get downtown and end this semester or celebrate the beginning of beautiful summer weather at The Dollar Box Showroom’s end of the year music lineup.

Local buisness offers venue, craft beer KENDRA PARKS printz reporter Hattiesburg’s newest craft beer store, Maggie’s Beer House, features hundreds of options for beer connoisseurs and showgoers looking for music and a PBR. Since opening in November, 2016, Maggie’s Beer House has grown into a place for people to gather, share a beer or enjoy a local band. The store’s amenities – a lounge area for watching TV and a space for bands to play – transform a regular drinking experience.

The store provides hundreds of craft beers from which to choose, including sours and stouts, kept at a cool 34 degrees Fahrenheit for a refreshing experience.

For those who enjoy bourbon, a package store is conveniently located next door.

Store owners Terry and Rosanne Smith decided to move back to Hattiesburg from Arizona to start the business after living in Hattiesburg years prior.

“We were living in Phoenix, Arizona

and just missed the small town atmosphere,” Rosanne said. “So, we decided to move back here. We love craft beer and the location and decided to rearrange the building and knock some walls down. Owning a beer store is just really fun.”

On scheduled nights, mostly Fridays or Saturdays, the lounge hosts local or traveling bands. Maggie’s Beer House has featured Monster Strut, The POSWOTS, An Animal, and more.

While listening to music, there are tables and couches for board games, such as Battleship and Yahtzee.

“The venue has a really relaxing feel to it,” said Monster Strut vocalist Ri Wardlow. “The front is where all the beer is. They have a huge selection of tasty beer. I spent about 10 minutes just deciding which one I wanted to try.”

“We had no idea what to expect because none of us had ever been there befor,.” Wardlow said. “There’s something fun and interesting about playing somewhere with no expectations

of what it will be like. Maggie’s didn’t disappoint. Everyone was very nice and we enjoyed the venue.”

For the summer, the store is bringing the classic daiquiri machine. The machine will feature flavors from pina colada to white russian.

“The job is a refreshing step away from a typical 9 to 5,” said Maggie’s Beer House employee Tyler Ivy. “It’s a rewarding day at work when you help bring the community together for a little craft beer and music.”

The store offers a 10 percent discount for students and discount punch cards to everyone for purchases on beer growlers and beer offers. There are specials every once frequently for fun. The recent special is the Tax Relief Weekend which features a variety four pack of beer only $3 and tall 16-ounce beers for $4.

For consumers who want beer onthe-go, the store offers pick sixes and growler refills of different sizes to take and enjoy. For people not looking for a lot of beer, there are cups with lids to go

SOS: Too Much Coffee-Not Enough Sleep with | ashley hobson Too much coffee? Who could ever have too much coffee?

With nearly three weeks of classes left, it seems like every teacher forgot to assign a paper, wants to add in another test or squeeze in just a few more topics before “dead week.” We all know this week is rarely treated as a “dead week.”

Just this past week I’ve had two tests, a pop quiz and a few hundred pages of papers to write. It’s enough to drive anyone crazy. So as we prepare for there to be a shortage of seats in the library, no available electrical outlets to be found and the wait times for coffee to be longer than actual lectures, here are some tips to survive until May 12.

1. Stay on routine If you’re one of those students whom I’ve heard about (but have never actually met at this point) who has a routine you stick through throughout the semester, don’t change now. If you go

to the gym every night, don’t skip it. Staying on routine until the end of the semester will mean less stress for you in the end.

2. Eat healthy Candy is not a food group. Just because it can be delivered to your door does not mean you should order it.

Praise Jesus for places that come in clutch like Dominoes and Insomnia Cookies, but switching that bag of chips for a bag of popcorn will be much better for you in the long run. Stay away from energy drinks altogether, and if your regular caffeine intake skyrockets during exams like mine, try switching a cup of coffee for a cup of tea. A healthy body and healthy mind will result in healthy grades.

3. Sleep I know. Who sleeps during exams? I get it. To be fair, I’m not saying to get a full eight hours every night. To be honest, who gets that on a normal basis? But if you

average three hours a night during the week, try to get a few more on the weekend. If long periods of sleep are completely out of the question, then fall in love with the 20-minute nap. It’s even been scientifically proven that 20-minute naps give us just enough rest to get up and go without our bodies falling too deeply into REM sleep (this is when we wake up feeling groggy instead of refreshed).

4. Take breaks Take care of your mental wellbeing just as much as your physical. You don’t sprint an entire marathon.

Sometimes it’s okay to

walk – like literally closing the textbooks and taking a walk. Physical activity will increase your ability to focus and enhance the time you do spend studying.

5. Don’t procrastinate Seriously, just turn the Netflix off. It will be there in two weeks.

6. Remember you are more than your GPA So many times in college, we get caught up in worrying about how we will stand out on paper. Is my GPA high enough? Do I volunteer enough? Am I doing enough? Am I enough?

The numbers between 1 and 4 that we base our

collegiate success on will not follow us the rest of our lives. If a C in a class is the best you can do, then you did the best you could. If the grade you get is not the grade you want, then figure out why you got that grade. Was it your study techniques? Were there outside factors? Learn from it and move on. You don’t have to be better than the other 15,000 students at USM; you just have to be better than you were last semester.

So give yourself some grace, and together we’ll get through the next few weeks from hell.

Sororities should update the ‘No B’s’ rule KAITLYN WATKINS

Boys, booze and bars – these are the big three vices that sororities prohibit at certain times. The restriction is known as “no b’s.”

Depending on the chapter, sororities enforce a specified time period in which boys, alcohol and bars are all forbidden for chapter members.

Some chapters enforce no b’s before any important event such as philanthropy or recruitment activities, and others only have no b’s 24 hours after initiation.

This rule is enacted to help each member maintain respect for herself and positively represent her sorority in public.

The executive body of sororities do not want their members

showing up to events while not on their best behavior, especially for activities in which the character and reputation of the chapter is put on display.

After initiation, the new members are expected to focus on their new sisterhood and what that means rather than going out and having a typical night on the town.

But what is the difference in no b’s and hazing?

Hazingprevention.org defines hazing as “any action taken or any situation created intentionally that causes embarrassment, harassment or ridicule and risks emotional and/or physical harm to members of a group or team, whether new or not, regardless of the person’s willingness to participate.”

Some students suggest that the no b’s rule seems to walk the line between a reasonable request and hazing. However, the Greek Life women I know would not condone this rule or ask it of her fellow members if it was humiliating or damaging to them, especially the women in the chapter of which I am a part.

I personally view the purpose behind the rule as a positive one, but it does seem to be outdated in some respects. The no boys rule applies not only to significant others but to guy friends and supposedly even classmates as well. If one has a significant other they see on a regular basis, however, the sorority does not prohibit the member from talking to them.

Mostly it applies to associating

with frat boys (who, let’s be honest, are pretty much always bad news).

One of my issues with this rule is that members are not supposed to hang out with their male friends. Saying that women can’t be around men and still have respect for themselves implies that we have no self control. One of my best friends is a guy, and I don’t see how stating that makes any sense, even if we are supposed to focus on sisterhood.

Besides, we live in an age when it is an established fact that people can openly date others of the same sex. So, if you’re in a sorority and dating another girl, you can still spend just as much time with that person as usual. The explicit statement of “no boys” rather

than saying “no significant others” effectively excludes members of a sorority who exist outside of the heteronormative expectation.

This rule is only enforced by the sorority standards board at certain times, such as the period around initiation and, for some chapters, during recruitment. At all other times, it is implied that going to bars with boys and drinking booze is the norm, even for underage members.

I believe that this rule is put in place partly to test a member’s dedication to the chapter. During the period of no b’s, sorority women must focus on their commitment to their sorority and evaluate what being a part of that really means to them. Sororities always ask that their members respect themselves and others in all situations, but the official no b’s stance is only enforced during specific times.

I’ve basically followed the no b’s rule my whole life, even before I joined a sorority, so I don’t have a problem with it.

It just gives me a valid excuse to avoid frat boys and going out. Plus, I’ve never consumed so much as a drop of alcohol because I’m underage and respect the law, and if that makes me a “goody-goody” then I’m fine with it.

I understand the concept behind no b’s, but I do think that it is time to update the official and unofficial rules that govern Greek Life to be more inclusive and respectful to the community as a whole.

Spring Game Takeaways: What we know into this year with a little more ferocity than last year.

The Southern Miss defense will have plenty of new faces but will provide more cohesion and balance, in my opinion.

Last year, the linebacker corps was the weak point in the defense. But this year, there can be no definitive weak link on paper. Newly-promoted players Racheem Boothe, Delmond Landry and Tarvarius Moore are a few names to watch for in the coming season.

After the spring game, the Golden Eagles will stay competitive despite losing some key players.

The offense looks sound with the most impressive group at the wide receiver position, where anyone can make big plays. The starting quarterback position is yet to be determined and may come down to who can run the offense most efficiently. With Ito Smith leading the way and Tez Parks having a larger role, the running backs will remain dominant. Defensively, the team concentrated on forcing more turnovers, forcing five in the intrasquad action. The defense will be stable with a strong line and the secondary showing improvement.

Quarterbacks Kwadra Griggs and Keon Howard took some big steps forward in terms of progression and field awareness.

Griggs showed a strong arm and pinpoint accuracy throughout the scrimmage while Howard started slow but finished looking more impressive than his counterpart.

The defenses showed closing speed in the backfield with some impressive displays in shutting down the run. Tarvarius Moore had a spectacular second quarter.

The Golden Eagles will need to lessen the penalties and take advantage of their speed in the secondary. The Eagles started slowly as a team but finished with some impressive drives.

The question of who will replace Nick Mullens at quarterback has risen.

Both Keon Howard and Kwadra Griggs performances showed both have the ability to move the ball downfield and have a developed concept of the offense. While both need to work on their timing with the wide receiver corps this year, a summer together could iron out the wrinkles.

While that may have been the biggest factor, junior running back Ito Smith did not play much, but his offensive line did not have the greatest performance. The question that still remains for me is whether this young offensive line can create the holes for the speedy back – or will he have to become a do-it-all type of running back this upcoming season?
