Why is sitting too much bad for you? Sitting is an activity that keeps most muscles inactive. Dr. James Levine, Mayo Clinic co-director and author, did an exhaustive research on the adverse effects of sitting. According to his findings, when you sit for long hours and then stand up, molecular cascades happen. For example, immediately upon standing up, the systems that process blood sugar, triglycerides and cholesterol gets activated.Dr. Levine’s investigation found out that the following happens to the body after prolonged sitting. 1. Organ Damage: Heart – When the body is seated, the blood flows slowly and the muscles slow down the fat-burning process. This makes it easier for the fatty acids to clog the heart.


2. Digestion Sitting down after eating causes the abdominal contents to compress and this slows down the digestion process. A slow digestion can lead to cramps, bloating, constipation and heartburn.

3. Brain Damage The brain functions slow down when the body is not in motion for too long. Inactivity affects the blood and oxygen supply to the brain which are necessary to release brain-enhancing chemicals.

4. Posture Neck and shoulders – When in front of the computer, it’s common to push the head and neck forward. This can cause strains to the cervical vertebrae as well as permanent imbalances which can lead to strained neck, sore shoulders and pack pain.

The group that had more TV time had a 50% increased risk of death from any cause and 125% increased risk of cardiovascular episodes like chest pain or heart attack. This risk is outside of other risk factors such as smoking or hypertension.
