Project Big Star represents an outstanding opportunity to purchase a prestige custom yacht from one of the world’s leading builders for a fraction of the normal cost and substantially reduced lead time.

“If you buy a boat, you might as well use it for adventure.” Richard Beattie, Owner, M/Y Big Fish

THE SPIRIT OF AN EXPLORER Like Big Fish before her, Big Star has been designed to redefine luxury yachting. To explore the far reaches of the globe in refined, relaxed luxury.

In March 2010, McMullen & Wing launched the 45m Big Fish – a luxury expedition yacht which became an overnight sensation. Strikingly architectural, immaculately finished and highly innovative, Big Fish became one of the most awarded and most widely published motor yachts in the world.

Like Big Fish before her, Big Star has been designed to redefine luxury yachting. To explore the far reaches of the globe in refined, relaxed luxury. Big Star was 75 per cent complete when she was tragically damaged in a shipyard fire in August 2012. Hundreds of thousands of man hours of immaculate craftsmanship went up in smoke. But Big Star was by no means destroyed.

After removing the interior and aluminium superstructure, an extensive survey revealed that the beautiful hull remained almost undamaged. The engine room, nearly complete and sparkling white, was virtually untouched. Millions of dollars’ worth of equipment and fittings were safely held in separate storage, completely unaffected. What remains today is a stunning opportunity – a pre-prepared hull and engineering platform, ready to receive a brand new superstructure and interior to any style you desire. A brand new custom motoryacht from one of the world’s finest shipyards. Saving more than an entire year of lead time. At an eight-figure discount.

Immediately after finishing Big Fish, the same owner commissioned McMullen & Wing to build a second yacht, the 50m Big Star. Although an entirely new design, larger and with greater amenity, the family lineage remains clear: a highly efficient, seakindly steel hull, strong masculine styling in the aluminium superstructure, extensive window glazing, a modern contemporary interior.

heritage Big Star represents the next stage in development from Big Fish. Commissioned by the same owner, with the same team of designers and shipyard, Big Star builds on the successes of Big Fish to take luxury expedition yachting to a yet higher level.

“I wanted a boat to explore far-off waters in relaxed comfort, complete safety and full security. I was surprised by the profound enjoyment I derived from the creative process of developing my yacht. Richard Beattie, Owner, M/Y Big Fish

Big Fish has become known as the yacht that never stands still.

In her second year she completed another 20,000 miles. In her third, another 20,000 miles. Circling the globe, visiting far off

destinations was what she was built to do – and she has excelled. Big Fish has a built spectacularly successful charter following. Over three years, Big Fish has introduced the luxury charter market to some of the world’s most remote destinations and has enjoyed multiple repeat charters from individuals attracted to Big Fish’s fresh, dynamic approach and unique destinations.

W

In the first 12 months after her launch, Big Fish completed 30,000 nautical miles, logging stops in Auckland, French Polynesia, Galapagos, Panama, Florida, Chile, Antarctica, Falkland Islands, Rio de Janiero, Amazon, Bahamas, Stockholm and St Petersburg.

current status Big Star currently lies at McMullen & Wing awaiting a new owner. She can be relaunched for a new owner in between 18 and 24 months depending on final design. The following images catalogue her current condition. Whilst the scars of the fire can be clearly seen, so also can the substantial value remaining in the undamaged hull, engineering and equipment.

design When the original design for Big Star was first started, Big Fish was nearing completion. In the years that have followed, the true brilliance of that design has become apparent. Inspired by the success of Big Fish, both as a private yacht, an explorer and a thriving charter business, we have developed a new concept for the completion of Big Star. Drawing the best and most popular features of Big Fish, combined with the most outstanding attributes of the original 50m Big Star design, this new concept has been given the working title ‘Big Star’. A completely new design, firmly planted in her spectacular heritage, ready to shine new light on the world.

Alternative concepts Big Star represents the ultimate platform: a proven hull, highly efficient and designed for cruising the globe in comfort and safety; an extensive equipment inventory and immaculate engine room. Yet at the same time, a completely blank canvas. An opportunity for a completely new superstructure style. A totally fresh layout. An entirely new interior design. Together with Gregory Marshall naval architects, we have offered a few concepts ourselves. And we have taken the opportunity to invite some of the new minds of our industry to offer their ideas also. Maybe they give you some ideas of your own?
