A wet winter is the gift that keeps on giving from the long days enjoying ski runs and back-county trails, to the explosion of wildflowers in the Tahoe Sierra that it brings each summer.

Local wildflower aficionado and guide Lisa Berry joins the Tahoe Weekly in this edition, sharing her picks for “July’s Wildflower Hot Spots.” Lisa shares her recommendations from easy strolls at the Taylor Creek Rainbow Trail and around Spooner Lake to hikes on the Big Meadow Trail and to Meeks Creek Falls.

July also brings with it an explosion of music, dance and theater festivals starting off this week with the High Sierra Music Festival, Beerfest & Bluegrass, Kirkwood Summer Festival, among many others. Family Editor Michelle Allen also shares some of her picks for “Family-Friendly Summer Events.”

The week also marks the returns of the Squaw Valley Community of Writers, which includes a number of free and ticketed public events featuring world-renowned authors. The conference presents many of its events in a unique and practical manner – on the outdoor stage of Paul Radin’s Memorial “Dream Wagon.” Priya Hutner shares the story of this tiny home and the big dream of sharing the literary arts with the community in this edition.

My main goal was to capture it in a different way than your typical shot from a boat, so I brought out my underwater housing to create this image. ow that the sun has melted the snow at lake level, the soil is moist and healthy for a fabulous season of wildflowers. You’ve probably already seen snow plants, those fluorescent red beacons cheerily alerting us that spring is here and winter is on its way out. Gray’s lupine, arrow-leaf balsamroot, woolly mule ears, mountain peony, blue flax and spreading phlox have popped up around the Tahoe

In the Angora burn area, accessed from State Route 89 or from North Upper Truckee Road, one can see a variety of composites, including woolly mule ears, nodding microseris and salsify. Swaths of Gray’s lupine, blue-eyed Mary, snow plant, and the lovely spotted coralroot — one of the few orchids endemic to the Basin — add colorful surprises to the recovered landscape.

Where can you, your friends and family discover those colors and scents that on a blue-sky day make you want to breathe in the mountain air and be in the middle of all that alpine beauty?

SOUTH SHORE For easy-to-moderate strolls on the South Shore, try the Taylor Creek Rainbow Trail for gardens of alpine lily, Sierra rein orchid and crimson columbine. Trails off Cathedral Road and around Fallen Leaf Lake are sporting Gray’s lupine, mountain peony, scarlet gilia and lush meadows with blue camas, bistort and death camas; keep your radar tuned for patches of porterella, a small and delicate blue, yellow and white flower in the Bellflower family; in drier areas, velvety stick-seed is especially abundant, attracting masses of Western Tiger Swallowtail butterflies.

EAST SHORE If you are on the East Shore, near Stateline, Nev., there’s the Lam Watah Nature Trail off Kahle Road where you can find meadow penstemon, graceful cinquefoil, great polemonium, bog mallow and bog saxifrage.

For a short hike with little elevation gain, try Spooner Lake on the Nevada side where State Route 28 intersects with State Route 50. Spooner Lake provides an easy 2.5-mile loop where stretches through the forest reveal Fendler’s meadow rue, Jessica’s stickseed, valerian, alpine breeches and dog violet.

NORTH SHORE Skylandia Park near Tahoe City on the North Shore is an excellent spot to see rich gardens of blue camas and the rare and elusive scarlet fritillary.

MARKLEEVILLE If you prefer to get away from the crowds and enjoy a serene hike in the woods, try Scotts Lake from the Big Meadow Trailhead

on State Route 89 toward Markleeville.

It is a moderate hike, 6.1 miles roundtrip with an elevation gain of about 950 feet.

Three miles in includes an excellent scenery and variety of terrain and wildflower habitats. You’ll strike a wildflower jackpot when you cross a short bridge spanning a lush creek choking with alpine lily, monkshood, ranger buttons, rein orchid, great polemonium, corn lily and towering larkspur — to name a few. If you’d like to search for the rare Sierra Bolandra, walk counterclockwise around Scotts Lake until you get to the rocky streams flowing into the lake. A short scramble up the stream could lead you to your gem.

WEST SHORE In California on the West Shore there is Meeks Creek Falls. Park across the highway from the Meeks Bay Resort boat-launch parking lot and head west for delightful encounters with Sierra wallflower, Brewer’s lupine, whisker brush, Nuttall’s larkspur and white-veined mallow.

Wherever you go to enjoy the region’s spectacular wildflowers, remember to leave no trace — pack it in, pack it out — and respect the delicate habitats that produce these special gems. 

Placer County Board of Supervisors recently approved $2.3 million in capital improvement projects for Eastern Placer County that stretches from the state line in Crystal Bay across the North Shore, down the West Shore and includes Martis Valley, Northstar, Olympic Valley and Donner Summit.

Project funding will include trail improvements at Watson Lake, the multipurpose recreation trail in Martis Valley, power upgrades to Commons Beach for the free summer concert series, stair improvements at Skylandia Beach, a new snowcat for the North Tahoe Regional Park, funding to aid in the preservation of the Olympic Meadow Preserve, work toward developing a Donner Summit Visitor Center, the purchase of “Ursa Mater” in Tahoe City (read details in this edition and at TheTahoeWeekly.com), and other projects. short jaunt up on Northwoods Avenue in Tahoe Donner is Coyote Moon Golf Course, a gorgeous mountainous golf course that also acts as a haven for local wildlife, pine trees and lost golf balls. This is a challenging yet entertaining 250-acre course that features undulating terrain, tiered tee boxes, perfectly manicured fairways and fast wide greens. A coyote runs

I also encountered a young buck, robins, chipmunks, chickadees and plenty of ground squirrels that were unfazed by my presence.

The ladies’ tees help shorten the yardage on many of the holes, but while I did well hitting the ball to the greens, I found myself caught up in a few of the big, sneaky bunkers surrounding a few of the pins, especially the one on Hole 1 — in turn driving up my handicap.

The fairway is slanted to the right on Hole 4 and the pin looks like it’s up on a pedestal, so getting pop rather than distance is key when approaching the green. Hole 6 has a nice dogleg left to get to the green, so one has to aim toward the middle of the fairway in one or two shots in order to be set up to make that 90-degree turn.

Continue following the cart path in a forward direction and you will make it to Hole 7, although it helps to grab a course overview booklet in the pro shop before you go out to keep from getting turned around.

The back nine is noticeably more difficult from the front but the holes get more interesting. It felt like I was sinking into a more remote forest, quiet except for raging creek fed by mountain peak snowmelt. The backside of Hole 12 looks like Hidden Beach on the East Shore of Lake Tahoe with sand protecting the giant boulders like a big uneven granite wall that could either help or hinder one’s game.

Hole 13 is probably the most talked about hole at Coyote Moon with tiered tee boxes and incredible views. It also has thick shrubbery, boulders and a quickly flowing creek blocking the pin, so be prepared to lose a ball or two. Driving down the cart path to get to the gold tees is its own experience; there were speed bumps and I thought that if Coyote Moon had opened any earlier this season that I would have needed four-wheel drive just to get to the gold tees. How appropriate is it to make the hardest hole the superstitious No. 13? I lost my pink Nitro but picked up a yellow Callaway to replace it and ended up at the well-utilized drop area on the backside of the green.

he old expression, “just like riding a bike,” is used to describe an activity that’s easy and comes as second nature — as is mountain biking on a paved path. But, what happens as soon as you make that turn and leave the civilized routes? Rocks, sticks and boulders might sound terrifying to the firsttimer. Well, it doesn’t have to be. With the right bike and trail, you’ll be searching for your next mountain-biking adventure when you’ve gotten a taste of adventure.

WHEN IT COMES TO THE FIRST TIMER, N O T H I N G C O M PA R E S TO POWERLINE IN SOUTH LAKE TAHOE. IT OFFERS A TASTE OF FUN, ROLLING TERRAIN WITH NO E X T R E M E F E AT U R E S OR LONG CLIMBS. Lake Tahoe is home to a vast assortment of bike trails and most of the attention is put on the big boy runs such as Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride and the legendary Flume Trail. Sure, the Flume Trail is a great option for those in great shape and Mr. Toad’s will test even the most experienced of mountain bikers.

When it comes to the first timer, nothing compares to Powerline in South Lake Tahoe. It offers a taste of fun, rolling terrain with no extreme features or long climbs.

Since it was our first-time riding mountain bikes, we wanted to make sure we knew where we were. So, we picked up a Lake Tahoe Basin Trail Map from our local bike shop, Shoreline of Tahoe.

You can find this map at any of the fine, local bike shops throughout the Lake Tahoe Basin. It highlights the best mountain-bike trails and paved paths along with short descriptions of each and even where to park. With a map in hand, it was time to head out.

From the trailhead off High Meadows Road, we nervously hopped onto our pedals. The first thing we realized was how smooth the trail was. The decomposed granite was like a hard-packed dirt making the ride quite pleasant. We meandered and zigzagged our way through mostly large conifers and came up to our first hill. Holding onto my brakes tightly, I slowly descended the hill until we came on a beautifully well-constructed bridge. Getting off our bikes, we leisurely walked over to it. In the peaceful surroundings with nary a person around, the only sound was the rushing water of the creek flowing underneath. Pedaling off once again, we came on a fork of trails. Uh, oh.

Luckily, a wooden sign pointed us in the right direction and off we went. From here, we began a short climb and entered a set of sweeping turns that reminded me of tree skiing. This is when I realized why people get so hooked on this sport.

Similar to back-country skiing, mountain biking gets you away from all the hustle ‘n’ bustle of city life, but at the same time introduces a bit of adrenaline-packed fun.

Dipping down into a valley, we met our first moderate climb. Shifting into our climbing gears, we sat back and began the slow, arduous task of going up through a tight, forested section. Nearing the summit, suddenly the forest canopy opened and exposed us to a view of Lake Tahoe. Putting my foot onto the ground, I took in the scenery while catching my breath. It was here when I thought for a moment: “What if I wouldn’t have pushed past my fears?” I would have never seen this view or caught the bug of mountain biking. | mtbproject.com 

There are two major trailheads you can start from. The first and most popular is to head to the top of Ski Run Boulevard and take a right onto Saddle Road where it dead ends and the trail begins. The other option is to access it via High Meadows Road off of Pioneer Trail. Generally, this trailhead offers a lot more parking. Follow the asphalt until it ends and park or continue another mile up the forest access road to the terminal parking lot. The trail starts north out of the parking area.

A good thing to know is that you can park your car in any one of Truckee’s neighborhoods — Prosser, Tahoe Donner, Glenshire, Sierra Meadows, Donner Lake — and get a free bus ride to the event and back to your car. The downtown area is cordoned off during the event; you don’t want to have to drive and park there. A full bus schedule is available at tahoetruckeetransit.com.

There are several ice-cream vendors serving delicious desserts that are hard to resist. The last time we went to Truckee Thursdays, my son Anikin and his friend Kayl Climenhaga somehow convinced me and Kayl’s mom, Laurie, to get ice cream from two vendors. It did help distract them from the seven-minute wait for their turn in the bounce house — and what could be better than ice cream twice on a hot summer evening.

Some of the best kids’ activities include two bounce houses, one for toddlers and one for slightly older kids; a face painter, although Anikin got a super cool spider painted on his arm so placement is the kid’s choice; a balloon artist who made Anikin a light saber, of course, and Kayl a pirate sword and a red parrot; and a puppeteer who performed a live show and taught Kayl how to maneuver the puppets. | truckeethursdays.com

ave you seen the colorful “Dream Wagon” rolling through Tahoe? It looks as if it was plucked from a gypsy caravan. The tiny house serves as a mobile library, office and outdoor stage for the Community of Writers conference held annually in Olympic Valley.

The “Dream Wagon” is dedicated to the late Paul Radin, who was as unique and colorful as the wagon honoring his memory. Radin was a poet, Rhodes scholar and a serious student of Native American culture and music who once owned the old Rampart property between Olympic Valley and Tahoe City, according to Brett Hall Jones, the executive director of the Squaw Valley Community of Writers, which returns from July 8 to 15.

When Radin enrolled in the first Community of Writers conference in 1969, Hall-Jones’ mother, Barbara, accepted his guitar as collateral for payment to the conference. In unique fashion, Radin rode

Reno’s 24th annual Artown, a month-long summer arts festival, features about 500 events produced by more than 100 organizations and businesses in nearly 100 locations citywide. There will be daily opportunities to attend art workshops, classes, lectures, musical and dance performances, kids’ activities and family events. Most events are free or low cost.

Over the years, Radin attended the annual event for the dinners and the company. He died in 2005. A few years after Paul’s death, his brother Robin Radin, contacted Hall-Jones and wanted to do something for the Community of Writers in his brother’s name. The call coincided with the time Hall Jones was in the midst of trying to figure out how to garner more space for the Squaw Valley Community of Writers, as back-to-back summer events at

Each year, 35 authors teach and present and each author has one to three book titles for sale. That’s a lot of books for her to carry and store. Hall Jones realized she needed to think outside the box for the additional space she needed for storage and

readings — and for an office, which she had lost in Nevada City. She wanted something mobile that could break down easily and allow for the staff to get in and out of the conference with ease. With support from the Radin family, the Community of Writers board of directors, alumni and the Tahoe Truckee Community Foundation, the wheels started rolling. The dream became a reality in the form of a tiny, mobile house dubbed “Paul Radin’s Dream Wagon.” French doors fold out into a performance stage for musicians, poets and writers, and holds up to 250 books with a loft for extra storage.

“Squaw Valley is our home. It’s beautiful here,” says Hall Jones, who is in awe of the dream come true for the conference.

The Squaw Valley Community of Writers brings well-known poets and authors to Tahoe annually to teach the craft of writing to aspiring poets, writers and screenwriters. Participants attend daily morning workshops, craft lectures and panel discussions.

During the week, published poets and authors give free readings and lectures open to the public. There are also ticketed events with nationally celebrated authors.

Hall Jones carries on the legacy of her parents Oakley and Barbara Hall, who founded the conference 49 years ago that

celebrates the craft of writing. The “Dream Wagon” will be used at Squaw Valley for both attendees and the public to see.

Craft talks and panel discussions are every afternoon between 1 and 4 p.m. at Bar One in Olympic House. Short take staff readings are at 5:30 p.m. at the Olympic Plaza Bar. The playwrights get to see their work directed and produced as a staged reading at the historic Valhalla Boathouse Theatre.

Penny Bear to stay in Tahoe City

Tahoe Public Art has received $40,000 in funding from Placer County to purchase the sculpture “Ursa Mater” and keep the piece on permanent display at Heritage Plaza in Tahoe City. Affectionately known as the Penny Bear, the piece was originally intended as a temporary exhibit to be on display through July until Tahoe Public Art began a fundraising campaign to keep the popular sculpture in Tahoe City.

The total cost of the sculpture is $101,000, with Tahoe Public Art raising funds for the remaining amount.

T

he compelling story of Sarah Winnemucca and her devotion to protecting the Paiute Tribe is a poignant tale of an old culture caught in the turbulence of a rapidly changing world. The United States’ 1848 victory in the Mexican-American War and the virtually simultaneous discovery of gold in California initiated an invasion of miners, surveyors, prospectors, settlers, businessmen and land speculators into the American West. Indigenous tribal populations were quickly marginalized or eliminated. Winnemucca, granddaughter of Chief Truckee, became the leading activist and passionate spokeswoman who informed the public and politicians about the cruel injustices being imposed on native peoples in the West.

Although overshadowed by commercially popular Native American women such as Pocahontas and Sacajawea, whose names are well known among the general public, historians consider Winnemucca one of the most notable women in 19th HISTORIAN & AUTHOR

Commemorative statues honor her achievements in both Washington D.C., and Carson City, the capital of Nevada. Blessed with insightful intelligence and graceful fluency in the English language, Winnemucca marshalled formidable communication skills along with eloquent public speaking to spearhead an advocacy movement for the Paiute Nation. The federal government reacted slowly, but Winnemucca’s impassioned lectures stirred wealthy audiences on both coasts to donate generously to her cause.

At hundreds of presentations around the country, Winnemucca spoke extemporaneously without notes and rarely repeated herself. In the process she charmed and educated her audience while she pled for fair treatment for the Paiutes.

She asked that her people be allowed to preserve their own culture, not be forced into Christianity and be given land for a permanent home. Winnemucca’s reputation as an activist enabled her to meet American presidents Rutherford B. Hayes and Chester A. Arthur, along with other top federal officials. When Winnemucca petitioned President Arthur’s administration for help, none was forthcoming, but it spurred the U.S. Congress to listen to her.

In April 1884, Winnemucca testified before the House Sub-Committee for Indian Affairs where she criticized flawed government policies and castigated corrupt agents working for the Bureau of Indian

Affairs who withheld food, clothing and provisions from the tribes. She said, “You take the nations of the earth to your bosom but the poor Indian … who has lived for generations on the land which the good God has given them, you say he must be exterminated. Where can we poor Indians go if the government will not help us?”

Sympathetic legislators offered supportive words and promises, but as was often the case when it came to the treatment of Native Americans, the platitudes proffered by well-meaning lawmakers rarely came to fruition due to a lack of political will and opposing philosophies on how to deal with the issue. Even so, Winnemucca never gave up her crusade for justice.

Winnemucca was born in 1844 in the Humboldt Sink, about 50 miles from Reno near present-day Lovelock, Nev. She was the fourth child of Chief Winnemucca II ( Jr.), head of a small Paiute band. Her parents named her Thocmetony, meaning “Shell Flower,” later anglicized to Sarah.

Due to her lineage as a descendant of two important chiefs, Sarah was considered a princess in tribal culture. At the time the Northern Paiute numbered just a few thousand people; they lived a semi-nomadic life and were a generally peaceful, loose-knit tribe broken into family groups.

CHIEF TRUCKEE The reason why Winnemucca I changed his name to Truckee is an interesting backstory. Phonetically the word sounds similar to “tro-kay,” which in Paiute means “all right” or “very well.” Chief Winnemucca used it frequently when steering exhausted explorers and emigrants toward the Truckee River and California.

Topographical engineer John C. Frémont met Chief Winnemucca in early 1844 — followed later that year by wagon train captain Elisha Stephens and his seasoned guide Caleb Greenwood. When these men met Winnemucca I, the chief used the word “truckee” regularly to reassure them. After all, they were exposed in the wilderness and surrounded by potentially hostile Indians. It makes sense that when Winnemucca talked to them that he would say they were safe and “going to be alright” and make it to California.

Winnemucca I always counseled peace with the light-skinned newcomers. His friendly 1844 encounter with Anglos and their repetition of the word truckee made such an impression on the elderly medi-

cine man that he changed his name to Chief Truckee. (Name revisions were common among warriors in certain tribes; they would take new names after great battles or transformative experiences.)

The old chief continued using the name Truckee after Frémont commissioned him an officer while fighting with the Americans in the Mexican War. From then on, he was known as Captain Truckee until his death.

In the summer of 1846, while Sarah was still an infant, her grandfather Truckee left for California to fight with Frémont in the Bear Flag Revolt. Chief Winnemucca II, however, stayed with his people and oversaw the communal antelope hunts. Winnemucca means “the giver,” or “one who looks after the Numa (people).”

It was Sarah’s father, and her supportive brother Natches who inspired her to dedicate herself to working for her tribe.

But it was her grandfather’s commitment to friendship with the Anglos that galvanized Sarah’s effort to work with them despite her frustrations with the lack of progress.

Much of Sarah’s life was spent in the valley of the Humboldt Sink, a place the Paiutes referred to as a “sacred circle.”

It was a time of great disruption for her people. Sarah later wrote, “I was a very small child when the first white people came into our country. They came like a lion, yes, like a roaring lion, and continued so ever since, and I have never forgotten their first coming.”

White settlers took over the choice hunting grounds and established large ranches. Herds of antelope that the Indians traditionally hunted in the higher mountains nearly disappeared. To irrigate alfalfa fields, farmers drained water from the shallow tule marsh that represented the terminus of the Humboldt River.

The Paiutes had once pushed along their light reed boats hunting waterfowl in the expansive marsh, but to provide more fertile land for fields of alfalfa and grain, pioneers burned the tule growth and the bird population plummeted. The newcomers cut down the all-important piñon pines for wood, trees the Indians regarded as vital ancestral “orchards.” It takes 75 to 100 years of growth before these trees produce edible nuts.

What’s borrowed is The Nth Power, a band that will be playing Marvin Gay tribute. Nikki Glaspie, the band’s drummer, originally hails from the East Coast and currently lives in Austin, Texas. She’s toured as a drummer for Beyoncé and Dumpstaphunk.

“We are a super band of sorts. We all came from other bands and other projects,” says Glaspie.

For The Nth Power all roads lead to Jennifer Hartswick, who is also on the lineup.

Glaspie was also part of her band before joining The Nth Power as was Nick Cassarino, guitarist for The Nth Power. “It was organic and natural. Jennifer called and needed a bass player for a gig,” says Glaspie. “I got in touch with Nate Edgar who was playing with John Browns Body at the time. We were jamming at 3 a.m. during the last gig at [New Orleans] Jazz Fest. The universe put us together. The band starting writing and recording together.”

The Nth Power is a force of nature, funky and soulful. This is their fourth trip to High Sierra and second year doing the tribute series.

Glaspie listened to Marvin Gaye’s “What’s Going On” album. “I fell in love all over again,” she says. “It’s one of the greatest albums of all time. It’s what music’s been historically: a story about the time. It reflects on what was happening during the 70s and the Vietnam War. As musicians, it’s our job. We have an opportunity to express the voice of the people.

Speak our truth and put out a positive message.”

Glaspie has learned a lot as a female drummer with The Nth Power. She’s found strength and has become an expert in

The Classic Album Hour Playhouse features the music of the Rolling Stones, “Let It Bleed,” Soul Queen Sunday is a tribute to Aretha Franklin and other ladies of soul and Guitarmageddon, a festival staple, will honor Led Zeppelin.

igh Sierra Music Festival is one of the hottest festivals in the area. The eclectic music extravaganza is celebrating its 19th year from July 4 to 7 in Quincy.

The festival within a festival offers a wide variety of musical genres and crossover genres. Under the High Sierra umbrella there is funk, blues, jazz, Americana, jam, jamtronic — something for everyone.

Each year there is a band contest for new, emerging talents and the winners get to perform at the festival. This year’s winner is Oakland band More Fatter; runnerup singer/songwriter is Eric Long. Both bring something new to the festival.

For something old we look to musicians who’ve been honing their craft for a long time, their dedication is one of enduring mastery. Bluegrass icon Del McCoury is one of the oldest working musicians performing at High Sierra. An ode to the 50th anniversary of Woodstock, the mother of the modern-day music festival will rock some older tunes.

Music is the highlight but there is also hiking, kids’ activities and a pool in which to cool off. If you’re looking for peace of mind, explore the festivals’ yoga, Pilates and guided meditations classes.

And for those who love dressing up, pull out your costume boxes: each day is themed: on July 4 it’s Bangle your Spangle, on July 5 it’s Cowboys and Aliens, on July 6 it is Sunshine Sparkle and on July 7 it’s Cape Crusaders.

A

n illusion is defined as something one perceives to be happening that really isn’t. This can be anything from a visually observed image, such as an optical illusion, to hearing or feeling sensations, that do not exist. As such, magic is a common language among all ages, cultures and peoples of the known world.

“I think everyone can understand that something was the color red and now it’s the color blue. You were standing in one place and now you are in a different place and another person is there. There was nothing somewhere and now all of a sudden there is,” says Masters of Illusion magician Farrell Dillon, who performs alongside Dan Sperry, Michael Turco and Tommy Wind this summer.

There is a reason why magic has been referred to as one of the oldest professions.

“One day there was a person who knew how to make fire and the rest of the people didn’t,” says Dillon. “And on that day, the magician was born because he held the secret. If I could back to the 1920s with the knowledge of magic that I know now, I’d be the greatest magician that ever lived.”

While the most powerful weapon a magician has is typically the element of surprise, the age-old art of deception depends on a constant and progressive evolution of the craft.

“If people don’t know what they are going to see, they don’t know how to catch it,” says Dillon. “The more times you see a show, the more likely you will catch on, but you won’t ever catch everything. I’ve been watching magic since I was a little kid and even if you know, it doesn’t take away from it. It’s still a never-ending supply of imagination; anything I can imagine, I can make possible somehow.”

TAHOE’S MAGICAL ORBIT There must be something in these crystal-clear, turquoise waters to arouse the imagination of possibilities beyond our grasp, because if it wasn’t for the mysterious depths of the Lake of the Sky, Dillon would never have become the grand illusionist he is today.

It was on a family vacation to Lake Tahoe that Dillon first saw Tony Clark perform his legendary Phantasy magic show at the Horizon Hotel & Casino

Resort, which closed in 2014. On the way out of town, he stopped by The Crowe’s Nest, a now-defunct magic shop in South Lake to purchase a videotape called, “The Art of Card Manipulation,” starring Las Vegas sleight-of-hand magician Jeff McBride. He practiced everything on that VHS before picking up Volume 2 the following year. However, it wasn’t until years later that Dillon performed for anyone other than family members.

“My sisters were ballbusters,” he says.

“They’d make me super nervous trying to figure out the trick. When I could finally fool them, I knew I was pretty good. So I stopped being afraid to perform magic for people.”

When Dillon landed his first professional gig at Magic Castle in Hollywood at the age of 21, he had the opportunity to book private lessons with none other than Clark who had landed in Burbank after completing a successful run of Phantasy 2.

After spending a few months living with a juggler in a doublewide while performing for transients at Seven Feathers Casino Resort in the tiny, truck-stop town of Canyonville, Ore., Dillon got his big break with “Masters of Illusion” television program on CW network that currently airs on Friday nights.

It was 2011 when he joined the mindblowing spectacle of the live show, a flamboyant fantasy for all ages featuring everything from card tricks and sleight of hand to mind reading, voodoo and comedy magic to grand illusions such as disappearing motorcycles, vanishing women and people changing places. And if you’re lucky, Dillon might even escape a straight jacket while surfing.

As far as whether real magic truly exists, the master prestidigitator himself admits there are all sorts of things in the universe that he does not understand.

“What’s the process of where we come from? What predates the Big Bang?

What’s past the wall of nothing?” asks the father of two. “To me, there is nothing more beautiful in life than a true mystery.

It took me a long time to be comfortable with not having all the answers to things.

Grilling is an art. Whether you are preparing meat, chicken, fish or veggies, the secret is in the sauce, marinade or dry rub. Use marinades and dry rubs before you cook and use barbecue sauce before, during and after. All are bound to make your main course a delicious hit. If you’re not a grill cook, there is no need to worry.

Kansas City barbecue sauce is sweet and tangy with a tomato- and molasses-based sauce. St. Louis cooks use a sweet-and-sour barbecue sauce with a kick of spice, making it tangier than most other barbecue sauces.

St. Louis barbecue sauce also has one of the thinnest consistencies. Memphis grillers use a dry rub on pork. Both cities are known for their ribs.

It turns out Californians also have a barbecue tradition that emanates from Santa Maria. Thought to have originated by ranchers in the region cooking for their vaqueros or cowboys, the Santa Maria barbecue starts with a dry rub of salt, pepper and garlic powder on a beef tritip cooked over local red oak wood.

Fruit-based barbecue sauce is a delicious alternative to traditional sauces.

Dry rubs are used to season the meat before cooking. The process seals the juices inside the meat and gives the meat a crispy outside. Marinades generally combine acids, spices and juices and are used for quick cooking as opposed to slow.

Marinating chicken, meats and vegetables before grilling them adds an amazing flavor and tenderizes the meat.

Apple cider and spices are a fabulous marinade for chicken. Using barbecue sauce as both a marinade and a sauce for dipping works well. Italian dressing is great for almost any grilled vegetable. Pestoslathered corn on the cob is a delightful summer treat.

Chimichurri sauce is an excellent marinade and sauce for meats and seafood especially shrimp. An Asian soy and ginger sauce is also very good while Montreal seasoning is a great addition to dry rubs.

t’s a picture perfect afternoon in wine country and you and your bestie are sitting on the most elegant of scenic hilltop patios being treated like, well, like the stars that you are. Wines are being presented and poured by gracious family members and nothing is beyond your reach. I find my sure-fire, wine-bliss ingredient is friends.

Have you been had? Does the winery serve the special sauce at the winery and ship the second-tier juice to you? Well, anything is possible, but you are almost certainly experiencing the real connection between how your feelings affect your perception. 1 clove garlic, minced 1 to 2 jalapeños, diced ½ bunch cilantro, chopped 3 to 4 T rice wine vinegar to taste 2 T extra virgin olive oil 2 to 4 dashes hot sauce to taste Small pinch of salt & pepper

Mix all ingredients together adding the garlic, lime juice, vinegar and hot sauce to taste. You want some bite from the vinegar, so don’t be afraid to add a little more to taste.
