Why Train as a Couple Counsellor or Psychotherapist? Relationships matter. The quality of our closest relationships profoundly affects how we feel about ourselves and has material and measurable consequences for our lives and those around us – affecting the emotional, cognitive and physical development of our children, our capacity to work and to be fulfilled in work, and our physical and mental health. When they fail the consequences are enormous, both to society (an estimated and rising £47 billion) and to adult’s and children’s physical, mental and emotional health. When time is tight, jobs are insecure and finances are stretched, family stability comes under increasing pressure. At TCCR, the number of couples seeking relationship support from our Client services is higher than ever. If you’re considering a career change as a couple’s counsellor or couple’s psychotherapist, or looking to add couple work and relationship perspectives to your experience, you’ll be embarking on a career path that’s intellectually stimulating whilst being exceptionally rewarding and helps a growing number of people.

After attending therapy:

94%

of TCCR clients report that they have a better understanding of their partner

90%

of TCCR clients report that the expression of feelings and problems with their partner has improved

Masters Programme Overview Our Masters in individual and couple counselling, couple psychotherapy and psychosexual and relationship therapy provide training for the next generation of couple therapists. They are internationally renowned and we take applications from local and EU students. International students are welcome to apply if they are able to organise a visa for themselves. All our clinical training courses are UEL validated and accredited by bodies including The British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy, The British Psychoanalytic Council and College of Sexual and Relationship Therapists.

Core curriculum Our Masters programmes share a core curriculum, where students across all 3 programmes undertake the same academic and professional modules before undertaking the qualifying module in their chosen speciality. Clinical and professional requirements vary for the different specialties. All our Masters programmes require you to have therapy yourself. This is an important part of the training, allowing you to gain greater self–awareness as well as vital insight into the process of therapy itself. This requirement may be modified for practising therapists. Advanced standing students will have been eligible for APELing (Assessment of Prior and Experiential Learning) of modules and clinical requirements as appropriate to their prior skills and knowledge. Students can also progress onto other pathways. You could gain a Masters in one of the specialisms as well as TCCR qualifying diplomas and professional accreditation in all three. This opens huge and richly diverse learning opportunities while minimising duplication across the specialisms. Our Masters programmes are designed to provide knowledge, skills and clinical practice in couple and relationship therapy. They focus on the purpose and practice of therapy intervention and on how the effectiveness of the therapy can be assessed. The ethical framework within which this happens is considered. By the end of the programme, and once a student has confirmed their speciality, they will have completed a programme of theory and practice which will equip them to gain or work towards professional accreditation with the appropriate body.

Students do not need to have completed individual therapy training prior to studying couple work at TCCR.

Our overarching methodology We offer a programme of learning which has been developed over more than 65 years and which is internationally recognised as leading the field. Our approach is grounded in psychoanalytic thinking, developed for the modern world and informed by the latest developments in neuroscience and attachment theory. Our training teaches how couple relationships can be affected by early life experiences which can be replayed and reworked in the present. We attend to the couple relationship as a dynamic entity in its own right, possessing characteristics of a shared nature. When we see individual clients, we still have a relationship focus as that is at the core of all our work. Students will be offered a containing environment in which to weave together theory, practice, self-reflective skills and supervision. They will have the opportunity to develop critical thinking by means of written assignments including assessed case studies, reading, research and discussion.

Holders of: • Relate’s Postgraduate Diplomas in Relationship Counselling or Psychosexual Therapy • London Diploma in Psychosexual and Relationship therapy may also be eligible to apply depending on evidence that their overall experience gives them the equivalent of the above. If in doubt, please contact the Programme Head, David Hewison: dhewison@tccr.ac.uk Course content & structure Research supervision Whilst this part of the programme is individual and unique to each candidate, the thesis for all students will normally be based on clinical or applied practise with couples or a closely related field (such as parents and parenting). Students may choose to do a more theoreticallyorientated dissertation (for example, conceptual research), but in any case it should build on the body of practise experience and knowledge that couple therapists have developed in their clinical work and applied to allied settings. Indicative examples of topics are: • issues in the content, process, conceptualisation or theory of couple interaction as applied to therapy or other forms of intervention in couple relationships; • shared understandings of key issues in couple therapy across the field, such as adult attachment; sexuality, gender differences. • outcome and other studies that illuminate contemporary clinical issues, including the process of change. Research may be case study or small-scale research study-based, or conceptually-based. The research may be a part of a larger research project but, if so, the student’s own research must form the dissertation. Qualitative methods, survey-based or quantitative research methods (or a mix) may be used. Professional Doctorate students will have at least two, and normally not more than three, supervisors who together demonstrate an appropriate range of academic and/or professional experience. At least one will be expert in the area of couple psychotherapy. One supervisor will be the Director of Studies with responsibility to supervise the student on a regular, frequent and recorded basis. TCCR will help advise on appropriate supervisors and at least one is usually a senior member of TCCR’s staff. Thesis Students will be supported to plan and write an extended dissertation (40,000-60,000 words) that includes a thorough literature review situating the research in the couple therapy field, a comprehensive justification and description of the methodology used, transparent accounts of the ‘data’ (whatever these may be), and a clear analysis of the data that meets contemporary standards for analysis at doctoral level. These will be followed by a good discussion of what the results mean as well as their limitations, and the whole dissertation has to conform to UEL’s requirements for doctoral writing. Generally, it is helpful for students to write as they conduct their research, and all the assessments in the taught part of the programme are designed to help with the final dissertation.
