The Tech: A second home for educators One of the things I loved most about my time as a classroom teacher was the fresh start each fall — the whole year in front of me, with new students and new challenges. Now that I’m working in the museum world, fall is no less exciting. And this fall we have a lot to be excited about at The Tech. You have known us for years as a place that inspires the innovator in your students. Now, we are expanding our offerings to help you bring the type of hands-on learning you love in the museum to your own classroom. At The Tech, we believe the most important 21st century skill is creative problem-solving, and we have a long history of designing experiences to build that skill. So in addition to field trips and labs for students, we now provide a wide variety of professional development workshops for educators, from a few hours to a few weeks long, on subjects ranging from educational technologies to engineering design. And we have a laser focus on helping you integrate Common Core State and Next Generation Science Standards into your classroom.

2

You’ll find out more about these opportunities — for both classroom and after-school educators — in the following pages, along with details about field trips. At The Tech, we build all our programs around a core belief: that young people who can work together to solve problems creatively are primed for success in the 21st century. I look forward to working with you in the coming year to open up this world to your students.

For your students Bring your students on a field trip to The Tech for an only-in-Silicon-Valley learning experience! We offer hands-on learning that reinforces concepts you’re teaching in school and after school, including Common Core and Next Generation Science standards. We’ll help your students develop 21st-century skills so they can succeed in a world driven by technology.

5

Field trips Bring your students to The Tech for a day of imaginative, immersive, standards-based scientific learning. Thanks to generous donors, we can waive fees for admission and science labs for California Title I K-12 students. Transportation reimbursement is available for a limited number of schools. Whether you educate students in a school or afterschool setting, we can tailor your field trip experience with the following options:

Galleries where students explore modern-day scientific subjects using all their senses — especially their sense of fun.

Science labs where children become true Silicon Valley innovators as they conduct experiments and analyze results. IMAX movies for thrilling adventures in new worlds, from the microscopic to the cosmic. For field trip pricing, see page 18.

Galleries

Fun and fascination go hand-in-hand with learning throughout our two gallery floors. Some highlights: In Cyber Detectives, presented by Palo Alto Networks, students can train as a computer security professional and go on a mission to protect a recycling plant from criminals.

In Social Robots, your class will get to design, build, and program a real robot.

In The Tech Studio, students can participate in a variety of maker-style activities that will inspire the innovator in everyone.

Science labs

What does DNA have to do with the taste of broccoli? How do roller coasters make our stomachs drop? What makes the Earth a giant magnet? During your field trip, students explore these and other questions in The Tech’s hands-on Science Labs. During these 90-minute labs, students brainstorm, design, build, test, and redesign their way to creative solutions to real-world science and engineering challenges. All labs support Next Generation Science Standards, Common Core State Standards, and California Science Content Standards.

8

Some examples of our labs:

• Chemicals of Innovation: Bring the periodic table to life by experimenting with chemical reactions and exploring real-life applications. Grades 5-8.

• Engineering for Earthquakes: Practice structural design and engineering that can withstand one of California's greatest natural threats: earthquakes. Grades 5-12.

• Green by Design: Harness the power of wind and sun! Investigate the power of solar cells, create solarpowered cities and build wind turbines. Grades 3-8.

Take your class on a field trip under the sea or into outer space at The Hackworth IMAX Dome Theater, a one-of-a-kind movie experience with more than 9,000 square feet of wraparound image and 13,000 watts of digital surround sound.

IMAX films

See our calendar for regular IMAX showings. If you have a group of 50 or more, the 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. time slots can be reserved with a film of your choosing from our library. Featured films for 2015-16: YO U WO N ’ T B E L I E V E YO U R E Y E S .

For you The Tech is proud to unveil two new initiatives devoted exclusively to professional development for school and after-school educators, inspired by the innovative science and technology of Silicon Valley. Come take part in the free or low-cost opportunities provided by the Design Challenge Learning Institute, or see if your Title I school would be a good fit to join our Tech Academies of Innovation.

Design Challenge Learning Institute: Professional development resources and events at The Tech

Sample workshops: • Codeable Crafts • Introduction to coding

• Edcite • Digital library training

New offerings are being added all the time!

Our professional development programs are terrific ways to stretch your knowledge, tap into your own creativity, and connect with your colleagues — all in our new Design Challenge Learning Institute, adjacent to the museum. Best of all, our offerings are great reminders that some of the best learning occurs when teachers — as well as students — are having fun! Programs are open to in-school and afterschool educators as well as libraries.

12

What is Design Challenge Learning? It’s The Tech’s approach to learning, a combination of engineering design and project-based learning. It engages students in the design process to solve a relevant, real-world problem, reinforcing their science, math, social studies, and language arts content knowledge, through an open-ended design process that results in an original, team-driven solution.

The Tech Academies of Innovation: Long-term professional development focusing on STEM education

Each spring, The Tech will select four school teams of teachers and after-school providers to be recognized as Tech Academies of Innovation. These teams will enjoy three years of professional development provided by our experienced team.

The application period opens in October 2015, and applications are due in January 2016.

More information: thetech.org/techacademies

The intensive program targets educators working with underserved students in grades 4 to 8, providing support for the integration of instruction around real-world problems. Common Core State Standards and Next Generation Science Standards remain front and center in all that we do. 13
