At The Tech, we believe that when you design educational experiences to be truly inclusive, all students benefit. That’s why we pay particular attention to how our exhibits, labs and activities are experienced by students as we design them. We design for girls. We know that girls are more engaged in engineering, computer science and other technical fields when they see them as an opportunity to address issues they care about, rather than as an end unto themselves. Our Design Challenge Learning approach gives students the chance to experience science, engineering, technology and math as tools for making the world a better place.

We share what we know with other educators. Professional development provided by The Tech and our partners makes explicit the practices and design principles that are central to effective inclusion of a variety of learners. Participating in workshops at The Tech can give you the opportunity to build your own Design Challenge Learning muscles.

We design for the underrepresented. We know that young people traditionally underrepresented in the sciences thrive when activities are collaborative and open-ended. We aim for deceptively simple — easy enough that students jump in, but difficult enough to require multiple iterations to find a solution. Our Design Challenge Learning approach highlights the need to test, fail and try again as a key part of the innovation process, providing young people with the opportunity to practice persistence.

We believe that having a diversity of problem solvers is important to society as a whole. When diverse perspectives innovate, the problems that get solved and the solutions that are created are richer. Be a part of helping us create that future — bring your students, and yourself, to The Tech!

Field trips

Days of exploration Bringing your students to The Tech guarantees them a day of imaginative, immersive, standards-based scientific learning. And thanks to our generous donors, The Tech has funding to offer California Title I K-12 students fee-waived museum entrance, scholarships for hands-on science labs and transportation reimbursement for a limited number of schools. Whether you educate students in a school or afterschool setting, we can help tailor your field trip experience with the following options: Galleries where students learn about and explore modern-day scientific subjects using their senses — especially their sense of fun. Labs where children become true Silicon Valley innovators as they develop 21st century skills while conducting experiments and analyzing results IMAX movies for thrilling adventures in new worlds, from the microscopic to the cosmic “The Tech brings the love of science to life and allows students to learn hands-on what they can normally only read about.” — Loraine De La Torre, fifth-grade teacher at Laurel Wood Elementary School “We have been visiting The Tech each year, and I think it is a fantastic field trip. We participate in labs, explore the exhibits, and watch an IMAX movie. It is one of the highlights of our year.” — Beth Maxwell, fifth-grade teacher at Addison Elementary School

Galleries

Exploring the museum Fun and fascination go hand-in-hand with learning on our two gallery floors, which you can explore with your students when you visit the museum during or after school. Traveling through exhibits in supervised groups, students will customize their educational experiences naturally by spending time at installations that interest them most.

In BioDesign Studio, for example, students are empowered to play, tinker and design with the world’s most powerful technology — biology. This gallery delivers more than just knowledge; it allows young people to personally create with biology.

In Cyber Detectives, presented by Palo Alto Networks, students can train as a computer security professional and go on a mission to protect a recycling plant from criminals. In Social Robots, they’ll get to design, build and program a real robot. And in The Tech Studio, they can participate in a variety of maker-style activities that will inspire the innovator in everyone.

Labs @ The Tech Science labs What does DNA have to do with the taste of broccoli? How do roller coasters make our stomachs drop? What makes the Earth a giant magnet? During your field trip, students can explore these and other questions as they roll up their sleeves in The Tech’s hands-on Science Labs. These interactive 90-minute sessions offer deeper learning experiences that reinforce scientific concepts and help students develop 21st-century skills. Participants will use the design process to brainstorm, design, build, test and redesign their way to creative solutions to real-world science and engineering challenges. All labs support Next Generation Science Standards and Common Core State Standards. They are complemented by related gallery exhibits and pre- and post-visit activities. Some examples of our labs: • Engineering for Earthquakes: Practice structural design and engineering that can withstand one of California’s greatest natural threats: earthquakes. Grades 5-12. • Simplicity of Electricity: Explore properties of electricity and circuits as students tinker and build scribbling bots. Grades 4-8. • Galactic Forces of Magnetism: Discover magnetic forces from our home on Earth to the outer reaches of the Milky Way. Grades 3-8.

Innovation labs Enhance your experience with an Innovation Lab, 30- to 60-minute guided experiences that take place in select exhibit galleries. These facilitated sessions offer a more in-depth experience that deepens student learning, encourages teamwork and builds confidence in the engineering design process. Innovation Labs support Next Generation Science Standards and Common Core State Standards, and they are complemented by pre- and post- visit activities. There is no cost for your students.

The Tech Academies of Innovation: Nurturing the next generation of Silicon Valley innovators

One of the most pioneering programs at The Tech is our partnership with schools to develop a network of engineering education leaders and model STEM programs. Each spring, we choose up to four schools and their after-school programs to be recognized as Tech Academies of Innovation. These teams enjoy three years of professional development provided by our experienced team and community partners.

The intensive program targets educators working with underserved students in Grades 4-8, providing support for the integration of instruction around real-world problems. Common Core State Standards and Next Generation Science Standards remain front and center in all that we do. The application period opens in September 2016, and applications are due in January 2017.
