At The Tech we foster the potential in all people to be innovators who make a difference in the world. One strategy to achieve this mission is our focus on Design Challenge Learning, which places the learner at the center of problem-solving. When young people visit The Tech on field trips or with their families, they collaborate to engineer, design, test and iterate solutions, but more importantly, to develop a sense of agency and self-confidence. One special experience at The Tech can inspire youth, yet this inspiration makes the most impact when it is linked with sustained support from parents and educators. As an educator, you are in a position to make lasting differences in the lives of students through mentorship, encouragement and presentation of new challenges and growth opportunities. At the heart of our mission to be a resource for educators is the new Bowers Institute, a center for professional learning to help educators create vibrant, challenging and supportive environments for all learners.

The Bowers Institute supports your work through: • Sharing a curated set of STEM resources online. • Professional development workshops, where you can connect to and learn from a network of education leaders in engineering, design and technology. • Deep partnership with eight school districts via The Tech Academies of Innovation program to create an ecosystem to support STEM learning from kindergarten through college. These leaders and model programs serve as resources to other educators throughout the region and California. Educators are doing intensive and pivotal work, and you know how challenging that work can be! Through the Bowers Institute and a bolstered commitment to supporting educators, I hope The Tech can be as inspiring a place for you as it is for your students.

Field trips

Days of exploration Bringing your students to The Tech guarantees a day of immersive, standards-based scientific learning. And thanks to our generous donors, The Tech can offer California Title I K-12 students fee-waived museum entrance, scholarships for hands-on science labs and transportation reimbursement for some schools. Whether you educate students in a school or after-school setting, we can tailor your field trip experience with the following options: Exhibits where students learn about and explore modern-day scientific subjects using their senses — especially their sense of fun. Science Labs where children become true Silicon Valley innovators, while conducting experiments and analyzing results. Innovation Labs immerse students in a 45-minute guided experience that takes place in select exhibit galleries. IMAX movies for thrilling adventures in new worlds, from the microscopic to the cosmic.

“Our students are given the chance to be as innovative as possible. The labs and galleries are a great opportunity for our students to challenge themselves.” — Tim Raffo, fifth-grade teacher at South Elementary School

Exciting exhibits

Exploring the museum Fun and fascination go hand in hand with learning in The Tech’s eight exhibit spaces, which include dozens of experiences. Some highlights:

In BioDesign Studio students are empowered to play, tinker and design with the world’s most powerful technology — biology.

In Social Robots, students can design, build, and program a real robot.

Cyber Detectives, presented by Palo Alto Networks, allows students to train as computer security professionals and go on a mission to protect a recycling plant from criminals.

The Tech Studio includes a variety of maker-style activities that will inspire the innovator in everyone.

Labs @ The Tech Why do I get an electric shock when I touch metal? How do roller coasters make our stomachs drop? During your field trip, students can explore these and other questions as they roll up their sleeves in The Tech’s hands-on Science Labs. All labs support Next Generation Science Standards and Common Core State Standards. They are complemented by related gallery exhibits and pre- and post-visit activities. We offer two types of lab experiences for field trips.

Innovation labs

Science Labs These interactive 90-minute sessions reinforce scientific concepts and help students develop 21st-century skills. Participants will use the design process to brainstorm, design, build, test and redesign their way to creative solutions to real-world challenges.

Innovation Labs are 45-minute guided experiences in select galleries. These sessions offer a more in-depth experience that deepens student learning, encourages teamwork and builds confidence in the engineering design process.

For you This year, The Tech launched the Bowers Institute, a new hub for professional development for school and after-school educators. Come take part in affordable opportunities inspired by the innovative science and technology of Silicon Valley to expand your skills in the classroom.

11

Bowers Institute

The Tech is supporting educators in growing their skills and confidence with Design Challenge Learning and cutting-edge tools for STEM teaching. These efforts include our professional development workshops, our Tech Academies program and resources for equitable program design. By partnering with educators, we can give more students access to STEM learning. The Bowers Institute is named for its founding sponsor Ann S. Bowers. As a longtime board member and supporter of The Tech, Bowers has championed math and science education in public schools and been a visionary in the role that science centers can play as partners to educators. “I love the idea of hands-on problem solving, because when we try to solve a problem we surprise ourselves,” Bowers says. “We make things and figure things out in ways we didn’t know we were capable of.”

12

With three workshop strands, you can focus in one area or create your own learning pathways. Design Challenge Learning Learn ways to combine design thinking, engineering and project-based learning in your classroom. Design, Make, Code Integrate new technological tools into your curriculum and connect with others to foster your growth as a STEM educator. Only @ The Tech Connect exhibits and programs at The Tech to your classroom curriculum with this new series of workshops. “One of the best things that I saw with my students is that they aren’t afraid of failure anymore; they realize that failure is part of the process.” — Rebecca Balster, teacher at Ocala Middle School

The Tech Academies of Innovation

The Tech is proud to work in deep partnership with eight school districts, eight expanded learning programs, San Jose State University and others to create model STEM programs. Our work focuses on: • Developing educators’ confidence and interest in engineering design. • Building the capacity of educators to integrate engineering into any subject to support Common Core and NGSS. • Providing strategies to support students’ aptitude in 21st-century skills.

In 2017-18 we are expanding our work with our current partner districts, recruiting Grade 4-8 educators to a two-year professional learning and support program. These educators will participate in more than 100 hours of cross-curricular professional development and join an engaged professional network.

• Creating a network of engineering education leaders who can support other educators in their STEM teaching. • Supporting district-wide engineering instruction and kindergarten to college STEM pathways.
