THE TECH | 1

How we’re growing I’ve been very lucky to be a part of The Tech Interactive for the past decade. Over this time, I’ve seen the scientists and educators on our staff perfect some of the world’s most innovative practices in STEM education. We’ve turned fascinating bioengineering industry trends, such as growing a leather-like biomaterial, into accessible activities for everyday visitors to The Interactive. We’ve also trained teachers on how they can create lesson plans that instill an engineering mindset in students using affordable classroom supplies. Now we’re asking ourselves, how can we expand these ideas to a wider audience outside Silicon Valley? The Tech has already made progress with this effort since we announced our 20-year vision to reach 100 million people a year by 2039. We are deepening the impact we make in the lives of educators and young people here in our local community, while expanding the reach of the pioneering educational material we develop. The Tech Interactive will always inspire the innovator in everyone. That inspiration is no longer confined to our mango and azure home in Downtown San Jose, or even our local school districts. We are working hard to support educators who share our vision for equitable STEM education wherever they happen to find themselves on the planet.

FINANCIAL REPORT AND OUR SUPPORTERS Volunteers, donors and the City of San José make our mission possible. The Tech Interactive could not be a resource to young people and educators without this generous group of supporters. Thank you!

Fiscal Year in Review

2019 Revenue and Expenses

Total revenue, including in-kind contributions, for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2019, was more than $17.6 million and included $2.9 million in contributions to The Tech 3.0 capital campaign. For the fiscal year, contributions represented 51.3% of total revenue. Earned revenue from sources such as general admission ticket purchases and facility rentals accounted for 31.4%. Public support from the City of San Jose equaled 17.3% and included both a general operating subsidy as well as the value of donated space occupied by The Interactive.

Fiscal year runs from July 1, 2018, to June 30, 2019

Weak revenue coupled with an elevated expense level of $24.1 million resulted in a deficit of $6.4 million for the year. Of the $6.4 million deficit, $3.4 million was depreciation expense. The true cash deficit was $3.0 million, which was covered through use of the Contributions operating reserve. The reserve starting balance was 17% $9,073,343 $4.7 million and ending balance was $1.8 million. 75% of Earned The Tech’s expenses were allocated to programs, 16% to $5,555,068 marketing and administration, and 9% to fundraising. 51%
