Take Me North If Barbados were a person, the northern bit of the island that ends along the lower St. James-St. Peter border would be its proud head. Stretching over the two parishes of St. Lucy and St. Peter, the northwest is where the journey to the quieter, more mature side of Barbados’ personality beings.

Punctuated by vast pockets of mother nature at her best, and accentuated by easy-moving roadways, ‘up north’ - as it is affectionately referred to by Barbadians - is home to a blend of natural, cultural and historic exploits that are off the beaten pages of the typical glossy magazine spreads. The coastal voyage from west to north gives whoever explores her the best of both worlds - a bit of calm and lazy frolic, and a bit of rugged exploration. For the easygoers, they continue to relinquish days for the hypnotic blues of the seas, choosing to lounge seaside at any sandy nook. Hello Little Bristol! From bustling Bridgetown, heading north, travel twelve miles along the west coast of Barbados for an experience that is a stark contrast to what you have left behind. Welcome to Speightstown. The quiet sister of Bridgetown, Oistins and Holetown was named after William Speight - one of the members of the island’s first assembly - and is the second largest town in Barbados, catering to the residents of the north. Although it may not look it at the onset, the town embraces a certain Britishness that first permeated during its eminent heyday. Thanks to a historic economic closeness to Bristol, until today, Speightstown is affectionately known as Little Bristol to the older generations of Barbadians. Once a busy hub for dealers in tobacco and cotton, the town now exists in a more laidback repose - a settled-down version of its past self. Its main street of note is Queen’s Street, another acknowledgement of the now subtle British influence on the town. Trimmed with produce vendors along its sidewalks, this street is the town’s most bustling, complete with schools, supermarkets, banks and all that’s necessary for the uncomplicated life of the northerners. The regal street also features the town’s original architecture that towers over the road, and gives visitors the chance to explore its past at the Arlington House museum. There is also the Gallery of Caribbean Art nestled within its main commercial area where visitors craft an appreciation for the efforts of local artisans. But the most popular haunts are Fisherman’s Pub - an authentic Barbadian food experience - and the relaxing Speightstown Esplanade and jetty. Several other restaurants, bars and watering holes are spread over the small town, and fill up with people, fun and laughter at the end of the working week.

Of Mullins, Gibbes & Lazy Days One of the most fascinating lifestyles that the island has to offer is that of the Barbadian Beach Bum. Along the way to Speightstown, at one of the windows to the sea, two sirens sit in wait to lure you into this beachside life. Before the path cuts through to the tranquil St. Lucy countryside, Gibbes beach appears in a very understated way. Framed by trees and announced by the sound of lapping waves, the magic starts when the asphalt gives way to sand. Trees offer pockets of shade and the shores offer you the rare delight of a shoreline unobscured by hotels. Along this same path, some ways down, a more audacious window to the sea opens, and Mullins Beach beings its spectacle. On the map of Barbados, the tippy-top point features a star cast of places of interest. And, although they may be counted on one hand, these places are delightful and unexpected journeys into a rich, colourful culture and unspoilt, natural heritage.

When considering the cardinal points on the island, there is nothing more northerly than the Animal Flower Cave. Under the cliffs at the aptly named North Point, this charming, naturally crafted attraction is a marvel of natural history, supported by the untempered waters of the Atlantic. The scenic views are a stark contrast from the docile west left behind, and a walk down hundredyear-old stairs onto a 500,000year-old floor is the epitome of awe. Here at the bottom, the cave is home to sea anemone, which the locals call ‘animal flowers.’ One of the favourite features is the cave’s natural swimming pool, where the waters are clear but deceptive about their true depth. But the experience here is not complete until a sumptuous meal at the Cave’s restaurant has been had. Evolved from a bar which existed at the location from the 1920s, the family owned and run restaurant is a true gem of the north, offering delectable Bajan treats including pumpkin fritters, local lamb stew and a unique seafood pepperpot.
If aged perfections and old world charms are the signatures of Barbados north, the St. Nicholas Abbey brings a powerful chapter to add to the richness of the story. Fashioned in one of the most popular architectural styles of the 1600s, and with an acre for every day of the year, a tour of the Abbey unveils a trove of the island’s culture, uniquely preserved in the Jacobean styled 350-year old building. Besides being steeped in history, the Abbey is renowned for its rum, the by-product of the forward thinking Sir John Gay Alleyne, who introduced the windmill-operated rum distillery that has bolstered the Abbey’s legacy.
And it was also Sir John Gay Alleyne and his appreciation for the art of green-thumbery that framed the picturesque Cherry Tree Hill with a grove of mahogany trees. Although it is evident that the centuries have removed all evidence of its fruity, original name, Cherry Tree Hill is the perfect look out to the magnificent north east of the island, and an amusing spot for monkey watching.
When the wind catches the sails of the Morgan Lewis windmill, history comes alive. This majestic occasion is a momentous one, since despite their prevalence on the olden Barbadian landscape, the windmill is the only one in operation now on the island.

The Charming Fish Pot As the coast line manoeuvers the island’s natural curve that introduces the west to the north, the landmarks of a boisterous fishing village appear. Just a few metres away, along the water’s edge, is the Fish Pot Restaurant - a name that is a true commemoration of the past activities of the village. The charming seaside restaurant puts the best ingredients from the best farmers across the island on your plate. And with a name like The Fish Pot, you can rest assured that the fishermen sitting in their boats just shy of the horizon are rustling up a catch to make your mouth water. Housed in an old 18th century fort from a time long past, the restaurant takes on a coral stone and wood architecture reminiscent of typical Barbadian chattel homes. A wafting sea view is framed by large picturesque windows that invite gentle breezes to wander through the space. But for those who are more interested in the food and not the ambiance, Fish Pot Restaurant offers happy eating that warms the soul. For lunch, the prawn penne, lobster in dill sauce and paninis are some of the most talked about hits, along with drinks on the jetty while soaking up the warmth of the sun. Dinner introduces seared sea-scallops, prosciutto with quinoa and octopus bruschetta to start, and follows up with Atlantic salmon, garlic shrimp and lamb shanks as the mains. And on a lucky night, you may witness one of the best scenes mother nature offers the island - the arrival of a mother turtle to the shores during a ritual of nesting.
Homes Away From Home Mullins Mill Everything at Mullins Mill is perfect: The staff, the food, the service, the pool, the gardens, the tennis court, the beach and beach house, and the architecture too. We will return for our 16th time this year. - The Quinson Family Nelson Gay This is the third year running we have visited Nelson Gay for spring half term, and each year it spins its magic on us. We love the laid back style, the friendly staff, and the great food. More than anything though, the garden (which would put most botanical gardens to shame) and the beach and the pool just give us the perfect playground for the extended family, which for that week includes the wild monkeys and the mongoose. The pulse of the parish emanates from its heart in Holetown, which was the first town to be established on the island over four centuries ago. Platinum Coast is no misnomer and is very apparent. On the extreme ends of the city’s commercial district are the most luxurious pillars demarking any street on the island - the pristine, coral stone walls of the stunning Sandy Lane greet you as you arrive from Bridgetown at the welcoming south; and, on the north, the Limegrove Lifestyle Centre bids you adieu. Beyond this shrouded path, the gentle, manicured greens of the Sandy Lane Golf course and the course at Royal Westmoreland roll by. In addition to the golfing goodness on offer, exclusivity awaits at the Sugar Hill Tennis community, and delectability at the Lancaster Great House on the highway to the north. And yet higher is the third golf giant of the area: Apes Hill Club golf course, and its sister polo field. These facts conclude that the St. James experience has quintessentially redefined the old notions of what an island holiday should be. And in years to come, it would be no surprise if there is a motion to rechristen the area St. Luxury.

The Rundown on Holetown The first chapter in the story of modern day Barbados opens on a virgin western shore in 1625, where the first British boots touched the coral island in the area now known as Holetown. At the time - and with no stretch of the imagination - King James I of England lent his name to the area, and for several years it would be referred to as Jamestown. Later, but still centuries ago from the present, the name would change to Holetown, which was the doing of the seafaring class that navigated to Jamestown on transatlantic trade business with their destination set as the safe harbour called The Hole. Just as it was then, Holetown remains an active commercial district, offering duty free shopping at popular stops including the Limegrove Lifestyle Centre and local favourite Cave Shepherd which is a mainstay on the shopping landscape. A lesson in the island’s grassroots is brought through vendors selling their craft in and around the endearing chattel house village, whose architecture is also an ode to Barbados’ heritage. But, for the more discerning crowd, strewn all across the historic town are restaurants including the fanciful Tides Restaurant, cafes, lounges including the Drift, the Red Door nightclub and bars that are ready to take you off your feet and entertain you. Besides the manmade wonders of the town, the natural path through Holetown leads right back to the water’s edge, where a boardwalk now beckons romantics and sea-gazers to its perch along the pristine coast before they take their plunge-of-passage to an authentic Barbadian platinum coast experience.

The History of The Place
The year 2016 will always be remembered as the culmination of culture and identity through the celebration of Barbados’ 50th year of Independence - a milestone that only a few will witness in their lifetime. This golden year rests solidly on a history that is a little bit British with a dash of Africana, creating a colourful landscape and people that the world would know and identify as ‘of Barbados.’ The island’s colonial past is summed up primarily in its architecture, including the forts and other structures at the Garrison Historic area, and the affinity for its people to spur on the traditions of
horse racing and polo up to today. And most aptly housed in such an area is the national museum, where history is dictated to history aficionados and the genuinely curious. The capital city of Bridgetown also gives clues of these origins through its infrastructure, which offers clues as to the beginnings of modern Barbados. Naturally, being the political and financial hub of the island, there is quite a bit to learn. Each historic structure in the city has some priceless fun fact that makes for great dinner table material. Be sure to tour our Parliament building- dating back to 1639, it’s the 3rd oldest Parliament in the Caribbean and is still in use, having been kept in immaculate condition. Another chapter of the island’s history opens at the Nidhe Israel Synagogue and Museum, which holds the distinction of being one of the oldest synagogues in the Western Hemisphere, dating back to the mid17th century. We are more than able to organise a walking tour of Bridgetown with one of our experienced guides to help you explore the heart of the island. But, Bridgetown is not the only area that is germane to the history story
that is Barbados. The tales from the north introduce Holetown and Speightstown, two of the major towns on the island. Holetown, formerly Jamestown, was where the English first landed in Barbados in 1625, while Speightstown was settled a few years later and quickly became a major port and commercial centre for the island. The latter town is considerably quieter today but many colonial buildings still stand tall there, like Arlington House Museum, an 18th century three-storey house filled with loads of interactive features and exhibits on the bygone era. Besides its towns, another major historic notable is the island’s rum. To talk about Barbados without telling the story of rum would be a disservice, especially since the spirit was born right here, after all! Since its introduction in the 17th century, rum has become an ambassador for the island, and has a prominent place in Barbadian history and its present culture. Nonetheless, to expand any further on the island’s full history will be no easy feat, so we invite you to come and explore and discover the true gems of paradise that await!

Much Ado About The South & East The meek north has its historic bounties, and the west prides itself in luxuriousness, but the southern and eastern coasts combined are a cornucopia of everything. If you take a map of the island and trace your finger along the coastline from Bridgetown to Bathsheba, the arc resembles a smile; but, as the saying goes, there is much more to this area than meets the eye. The narrative of these two coasts is a colourful one, and just like protagonists and antagonists of stories, their personalities couldn’t be more contrasting nor their intentions more sundry.

On the trek away from the west, one of the most prolific sporting facilities appears. Considered the cricket Mecca of the Caribbean, Kensington Oval stands proudly, embellished with a statue lauding the best cricketer the world has ever seen - Sir Garfield Sobers. engines - fill the air. The parish is home to the island’s world-class motorsports circuit, which delights those looking for an instant surge of adrenaline. But, moving coastward, the sound of crashing waves begins to dominate the ambiance and a more boisterous Barbados comes forth. In the sheltered bays of The Crane beach, sun-seekers continue the west coast traditions on the shores beside relatively calm waters, but precisely east, the calm is broken. The City, The Village and The Gap Bridgetown The island’s capital. Home of the third oldest parliament in the Americas. The centre of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Bridgetown really needs no introduction. But, for the sake of this article, we will force ourselves to do it justice in words. The city of Bridgetown is located in the most populous of Barbados’ 11 parishes, and with a history steeped in merchants and commerce, the town entertains the notion that its streets form part of a rite of passage for Barbadians and visitors alike. The modern interpretation of the city is not too dissimilar to its original, offering duty-free shopping at department stores and malls along with an authentic Barbadian experience in its vegetable and fish markets. But the city is also on show, and welcomes everyone to visit its beautifully restored Jewish Synagogue; pristine beaches; aromatic cafes and restaurants; and, its Garrison. Now, the feather in the city’s hat is its UNESCO designation, something which holds great value to Barbadians at home and abroad. The city and its Garrison are historic architectural marvels, with their deftly preserved Britishness, unique serpentine layouts and colonial buildings that span three centuries of the British’s empirical rule. And whilst the town is a bustling bazaar of the island’s best, the Garrison is a show window offering a look into the island’s past: its defunct cannons line the savannah; its fort and other buildings reminiscent of a militant era; the preserved home of President George Washington; and, the authority on Barbados’ rich history - the island’s National Museum.

The Gap The fourth and final town as the story moves south is Oistins - the epitome of an island town, thriving on the bounties of the sea. Although the origins of its name amounts to more speculation than fact, certainty lies in the fact that Oistins and its residents always have the sea on their minds. In this tradition, the town has now transformed its Friday and Saturday nights into a carnival of sights, sounds and flavours to behold, with the ever popular Fish Fry that brings locals and visitors together under the night skies.

The People Have Spoken! Burkie’s Surf School As soon as we arrived (at Burkie’s Surf School) we received a very warm welcome from Alan and the team and were put at ease. After a brief run through on land we headed out expecting to spend the day being thrown off the boards (out of six of us only one had tried surfing before). Jason and Jacob were incredibly patient with us, giving us individual tips on where we were going wrong. The buzz when you feel the power under the board is amazing and we were astounded when we actually managed to stand up. After the first go you are instantly hooked and can't wait to get out again. Personally, this was the best experience I had in Barbados and I can't recommend it enough.
