our m i s s i on Thread is just a tool. It’s nothing special, and it can’t do much on its own. But oh boy what it can accomplish when paired up with the right material and a little creativity. This little project is a humble attempt to explore our city and its peoples. Finding those interesting materials that make up our communities, that creativity which provokes, instigates, and inspires. We want to tie it all together and see what happens. We want to ask around and see what’s up. If something is happening that people should know about, we want to make sure they do If something isn’t happening that should be, we want to help make it happen We want most of all to hear from you! What are you up to? What are you seeing? What are you doing? What are you thinking? What is life like out there, and how can we all share in it? Help give us a chance to tie it all

walking downtown past the bars to drink a cup of coffee and write this poem the sign at the bar reads "so crazy it's vodka night" and I think of the ways life can be ruined Black ice, instagram, allergic reactions, game theory when I get to the coffee shop the man next to me tells his date that he was an American Warrior hopeful but I know that we are all American Warriors tearing through carrot cake recipes and paper towels from Dollar General healthcare dripping from our teeth Online I read about a pretty Hawaiian woman who froze herself to death in Nevada accidentally, she was trying to be better (Google "cryotherapy death" for more information, dear readers) outside the sun was shining, then and now and when I read the article the words "frost nip" catch me She asked the lapdog of cold to eat up her impurities and it was so hungry Reminds me of that time I was on mushrooms in the back of the jeep it felt like everything was moving in every direction and it does still.

What the heck is Tamko?

Have you seen Tamko in the headlines lately? Or maybe the name David Humphreys? In the 1 940’s Craig Humphreys started a shingles company in Joplin. His son expanded the company to dozens of locations in states all over the country, creating shingles and other building and roofing supplies. Since the 90’s David Humphreys has steadily grown the business. According to a recent Joplin Globe article they employ roughly 600 people in the area. A Reference USA search found the Private Company’s last year sales volume was over 48 million dollars. There is no reason for Humphreys’ wealth or value to be open to the public, but it is safe to say he is a very wealthy person. That fact is evident in his and his family’s ability to spend money on politics in Missouri. In 1 994 Missouri voters approved a measure to limit campaign contributions in the state ($1 ,350 per election to statewide candidates, $675 to Senate candidates and $325 to House candidates). In 2008 the Missouri legislature voted to repeal those limits (a 201 6 amendment to reinstate contribution limits was approved by voters but has had its constitutionality challenged by a number of plaintiffs). At least one source indicates that since then, the Humphreys family has spent over 1 0 million dollars in political action campaigns and directly to candidates. Humphreys and his family have spent large amounts of money on conservative economic issues, most notably Right to Work which was recently passed and signed by the Governor after years of attempts. He and people associated with him have formed very close relationships to Missouri senators and representatives. These things are coming to a head now. In 201 4 Tamko was sued by a Methodist church in Texas County. Sources indicate the church purchased TAMKO shingles with a “guaranteed 30-year warranty.” However, TAMKO refused to fulfill the warranty citing normal wear and tear and “improper installation.” In addition, because TAMKO’s products include an arbitration agreement which requires any disputes be resolved “privately” outside of court, they have argued that they cannot even be sued. In 201 5 Senator Ron Richard introduced legislation designed to limit the ability to sue under consumer protection law. It didn’t make it past the filing, but Richard has filed similar legislation every year since, as TAMKO appealed and fought judgement all the way to the Supreme Court.

In late May the Supreme Court denied TAMKO’s final petition against being sued, allowing the suit to go to court. Just a month earlier a watchdog group had filed a complaint with the U.S. attorney for the Western District of Missouri, regarding a $1 00,000 contribution made by Humphreys to Richard in late 201 6. In a recent statement Humphreys said TAMKO “will need to reconsider our presence in Missouri. At the same time Missouri Governor Greitens and his nonprofit A New Missouri are aggressively promoting a probusiness agenda. Gov. Greitens called a special session of the General Assembly, delaying the end of their current session. The legislation he put them to task on, and which they shortly passed, is designed to allow energy providers to provide lower rates to some industries. It was brought up now, specifically because Ameren Missouri hopes to provide lower electrical rates to two potential new manufactures in Southeast Missouri: a proposed aluminium smelter and steel mill. Opponents have questioned how this will affect average consumer prices, especially under the assumption that this will set a precedent for new companies in the future here. Proponents have explained that the large electrical requirements of these industries warrant a deal. A New Missouri bussed people to Jefferson City to rally in favor of the legislation. This nonprofit has financed attacks on politicians critical of Greitens, and spent money on his travel and inauguration party. The organization's status as a nonprofit allows its finances to be private information. When asked about this recently, Greitens compared the right of that privacy to the privacy of voting, comparing the money being spent supporting him and his agenda, to the democratic act of citizenship.

Zines are a simple form of self-publishing inspired by D.I.Y ethics. Zine makers pour their creativity and interests into producing and printing limited runs of publications, distributing them within their community, and sharing them with other zinesters from all over. Zining is all about uniqueness and creativity, there is no one way to do it, but if you’re looking for inspiration or more information, this guide can get you started.
