HOA Board Message
BEHIND THE SCENES LOOK Serving on the Cresswind Lake Lanier (CLL) Board of Directors is a privilege that requires a strong commitment of time and effort by those residents who volunteer. What does that really mean to a potential volunteer? Here’s a behind the scenes look. In August 2020, the Community divested itself from Kolter. That means the Community, through the Board of Directors (Board), is now completely responsible for the management, maintenance, operation, and control of our community. In essence, CLL is a small city, and the Board is the city council. The Board, as the governing entity, must therefore be judicious, unbiased, forward thinking, and guiding as it assumes responsibility for governance of our community. Board decisions are made in the best interest of the community, not individual residents. Our decisions and actions impact us the same as each of you. Since divestiture, there has been a massive effort to review all the governing documents and ensure we are operating within the guidelines and parameters established by our Charter. This is crucial from both a legal and operational perspective. The results indicated we weren’t necessarily fully in compliance. An effort is underway to document policies and administrative procedures for transparency and operational continuity using administrative and policy resolutions. It takes several months of planning, review, and investigation to successfully develop our multi-million-dollar annual budget. This budget includes day-to-day expenditures and provides for long-term or future needs and requirements, including fully funding the Reserve Budget. The overall goal is financial stability. While the Treasurer (Sid Jacobs) leads this effort, all Board members participate in the development of the final product. Throughout the year the Board reviews requests for additional expenditures or changes to the budget projections. This could include responding to and resolving unfunded emergencies or other unexpected situations. The Board leads the efforts in negotiating and approving major contracts. In 2021, we reviewed and approved a new multi-year contract with FirstService Residential, the community management company. In 2022 we will approve two new contracts: Landscape Maintenance and Pine Straw Application that together account for over one-third of our annual budget. Contract approval isn’t simply reviewing an existing contract, making minor changes, and signing a new one. Requirements must be developed and approved by the Board, and bids solicited from various service providers via the Request for Proposal process. Once identified, preferred vendors are evaluated for capabilities and performance. Negotiations with our preferred vendor follows, and a contract is approved by the
Page 4
Board and signed. In total, we spend approximately 4-6 months working on major contracts. Our Cresswind community could not function without the many committees that support it and keep it functioning. Each committee has a Board liaison that facilitates direct, two-way communication with the Board. Liaisons attend committee meetings as a non-voting member, respond to committee questions and concerns, and provide guidance when appropriate. Mid- and long-term initiatives and projects are monitored via the Board Task List. A Board member is assigned as the responsible agent for each task. Depending on the task and its complexity, an ad hoc committee or work group may be required to assist in the investigation, design, and implementation of the response. Some tasks are relatively simple and easy, while others may require more extensive work, including budgeting. Board members are actively engaged and involved in these tasks. All regular Board meetings are open to residents: eight meetings are conducted via ZOOM and four quarterly Townhall meetings are conducted in person. If you have attended one of these meetings, you know they cover a wide variety of topics and concerns. It is during these meetings that votes on resolutions and motions take place. Preparation for these meetings can require a great deal of work. In addition to those meetings, the Board may meet in private (Executive Session) to discuss topics such as contract negotiations, personnel issues, or resident violations. Unfortunately, Board members must also deal with resident disputes and violations to the Rules and Regulations and the Charter. While the majority of these can be resolved with a simple phone call or email, others require deeper involvement, including conducting hearings and approving and issuing sanctions or other penalties. Fortunately, these types of situations are infrequent. The Board is diligent in addressing these events with upmost respect and courtesy for all those involved. Probably the most difficult task for the Board is communications. What is the most effective and timely means to provide information to members of the community and in what detail? Lots of inquiries/comments received from residents deal with issues that are covered in our Governing Documents. We strongly encourage all to visit the Governing Documents tab on the Cresswind website and read the Charter, the Bylaws, the Rules and Regulations, and the Board resolutions. We also cordially invite you to attend the Board meetings via ZOOM, as well as the Townhall meetings. If you have questions, submit them to the Board or the community manager. We are happy to serve such a great community and look forward helping guide the future of this community.

FROM THE DESK OF KITTI KLEINEDLER Not a week goes by that one of the staff members receives a compliment, a thank you, or even a thumbs up for a job well done. These little signs of appreciation mean so much to those on the receiving end. So, I want to make this a “thank you” note to the many Cresswinders who continually do things to enhance our community. It goes without saying that the Board of Directors deserves a big thank you for the endless hours they put into their duties. Likewise, the committee and club chairpersons and their members contribute so much to the growth and well-being of the association. We wouldn’t be the community we are without their input and hard work. Cresswind is so fortunate to have people who are willing to expend their time and effort for the good of the whole. But there are also some individuals in the community who give of their time and talents day after day to make Cresswind a wonderful place to live. And here are a few of them . . . Denny Allen: He sets up and cleans up the Crow’s Nest for Brew Ha Ha 6 days a week, and he has done so for many years. Doug Geganto: He leads a group of volunteers promoting patriotism with the display of flags at various holidays throughout the year. He also lowers the clubhouse flag to half-staff whenever required. Brenda Crosby: I call her the “keeper of the kiln”. She has monitored the need for maintenance and upkeep for the kiln for as long as I can remember. Howie Mueller: Mr. Photographer. He has taken 100’s of pictures of events and shared them with the rest of the community on Facebook. Leo Cortjens: Leo has spent countless hours planning and overseeing the improvements to the technology in the ballroom. Ric Osterloh: Ric has seen the two paving projects through from their inception to the very end. In the bitterest of weather, he was even out directing traffic. Abby Saccomanno: The subtle holiday/ seasonal decorations in the lobby are compliments of Abby. Her talent keeps things looking fresh for all. Page 6
Angie McClure: She spends hours upon hours proofreading the Waterfall before it goes to print. Lynne Leibrecht, Wendy O’Hanlon, Wendy Warder, Eleanor Whalen, Mary Woulf, Maureen Morehead, Steve and Kathy Remsen, Charlie Stotler, and Debbie Coursey-Prah: All of these residents have enhanced the fitness program through their willingness to lead or teach classes to others week in, week out. Eleanor Whalen, Marilyn Glasser, Kathy Stoessel, Sue Joninas, and Linda Gillot: These ladies shelve the books in the library and keep the selections current for the everyone to use. A BIG THANK YOU to these residents who selflessly contribute to the rest of the community. (The only drawback to these accolades is the possibility of missing someone. And to those, I apologize for my lapse in memory.)

PROJECT APPROVAL PROCESS
CONSTRUCTION DUMPSTERS
Dumpsters located in a resident’s driveway are NOT for personal or community use. Dumpster rental is based on the volume and weight of the dumpster when removed. Please do not deposit your yard and/or project waste into someone’s dumpster without permission. The photo below was taken by a resident of pallets and cement pieces that were dumped into their dumpster adding to their disposal fees.
Please remember that any changes to the exterior of a residence requires ARC approval in advance of starting the work. This means that any modification, alteration, or addition of ornamentation of any type or size to your home that can be seen by you, a neighbor, or pedestrians, requires advance approval from the ARC. Please remember this includes our back yards, and includes statues, sculptures, bird baths, flowerpots, wind chimes, swings, benches, arbors, trellises, etc. This also includes replacement of items with an identical item, for example, outside garage lights.
MAILBOX MAINTENANCE
So, do not start beautifying your home exterior or yard until you have submitted a request to the ARC and have received written approval from the community manager. If you don’t, you may be asked to remove the items and you may receive warning notices from the community manager. Fines can be levied if you fail to comply with the warning notices. The ARC has up to 60 days to review and approve / deny projects. Again, please do not proceed until you have received the written approval from the community manager.
Proper maintenance includes maintaining the mailbox in good working order, free from debris and bird droppings, keeping numbers intact, maintaining the mailbox and post finish (powder coat satin black), and repainting periodically. The original color of the mailboxes is powder coat satin black. The approved color for repainting is Rust Oleum Black Semi-Gloss 2x UltraCover Paint & Primer. The area where your mailbox is located is part of the Cresswind common areas and no plantings or borders of any type may be used around the base of the mailbox.
CARE COMMITTEE (CRESSWIND ASSISTANCE RECOVERY ENCOURAGEMENT) We have many individuals here in Cresswind that are willing to assist you in your time of need. If you need assistance, we are here for you. The CARE Committee maintains support for any of our resident’s needing assistance during a time of crisis. We can set up a Meal Train, come and visit, take and retrieve trash & recycle bins, pick up mail (especially for those in Phase III). We have a list of medical equipment which residents have and are willing to Page 8
loan on a short-term basis for your recovery period (wheelchairs, walkers, crutches, etc.) We have a list of various facilities in the greater Gainesville area that may be needed for recovery (rehab, memory care, assisted living, long term nursing care). We also have a list of organizations that provide skilled in-home care. This information is available and comes with no recommendations by the Committee. If you need assistance or if you would like to volunteer to be part of the CARE Committee to assist our neighbors, please contact Mary Quisenberry.

EDUCATION COMMITTEE Submitted by: Tim Roth The Education Committee has been busy this year working on new and exciting events for our community. This year we have seen many of our usual attendees, a growing number of new Cresswind residents, and several who have lived here for years and are ready to start “getting out”. Regardless, everyone is welcome, and you will always end up learning something. Along with the new content, we have also lined up some repeat events from last year based on resident’s suggestions. We have already conducted twenty-three events with over five hundred attendees. This has only been through the month of May, and we do not intend on slowing down. Cresswind Website 101, CPR Training, Brenau University Learning & Leisure, Traffic Safety & Road Use, Tugboat Trip, Boating Safety, Plan in a Can, Elachee Nature Science Center, Chattahoochee River Keepers, History of Cresswind by the
Heritage Group, Advanced Care Planning, Grief 101, Mindfulness Practice, Wisdom Project 2030, and a few guided hikes kicked off 2022. If you participated in any of these events, thank you for your attendance. We will continue to tap into the wealth of knowledge and informational content within Cresswind and our surrounding area. Look for some interesting events and activities throughout the remainder of the year. Keep updated by logging into the Cresswind website at www.cresswindatll. com and clicking on the “Our Community” dropdown menu, then “Committees” and “Education Committee” to see our upcoming events, meeting minutes, and recent presentations. Our Cresswind Welcome Committee is still reaching out to new residents with all of them being resales. Our members are sending cards, calling, and offering their support. We let the residents know they can call us, and we will help them in any way we can. Many neighbors on their street are reaching out to make them feel welcome. We hope some new residents will accept a visit very soon. We will be holding a New Resident’s Orientation for all new residents since March 2022 followed by a Meet and Greet in the Ballroom at the Clubhouse in August 2022. The staff of Cresswind will be introduced and give a brief talk about the jobs they hold. We will also have a few speakers from various Committees and Clubs to describe what they are all about. If you do not hear from a Welcome Committee Member within four to six weeks of closing on your new home, please contact me at sjoninas@gmail.com. We do not want to miss any new residents. LANDSCAPE COMMITTEE By: Linda Furgerson
It’s that time of year again when lawn mowers and edgers are frequently heard throughout our community. The following are some basic reminders about the busy growing/mowing season of our yards. Mowing/Edging Schedules • Weekly mowing and edging of turf usually start in late March and continues through the first part of October. • Edging includes sidewalks, curbs, planting beds (soft edging). • Additional mowing and edging may be conducted through early December depending on temperatures and turf conditions. Important Reminders Mowers, edgers, and trimmers cannot operate effectively or safely on wet turf. Normal weekly schedules may need to be adjusted/altered in the event of rain. Homeowners should make every attempt NOT to water their lawns (turf) if it is their normally scheduled mowing/ edging day. A minimum space of forty-eight inches wide is required for mowers to enter a back yard. If access to the backyard is blocked either by plantings, walkways, or other temporary or permanent blockages, it the homeowner’s responsibility to remove these impediments at their expense. This includes when these impediments prevent access to neighboring private properties and/or common areas. The homeowner responsible for causing the blockage is responsible for its removal. Properties will not be mowed until the blockage is removed. Pets must be inside the home during mowing, edging, or trimming. Crews will NOT enter if pets are in the yard and/ or have free access to the yard (pet door in place). Crews will NOT enter if warning signs are in place that indicate a dog is present. All pet waste must be removed from the yard prior to mowing. MTScapes crews are not responsible for the removal of pet waste and will not mow where it exists. All objects such as pet or children’s toys must be removed prior to mowing. MTScapes crews are
Page 10
NOT responsible for removing these objects and they will mow around them if seen. MTScapes makes every attempt to securely close the gates once they have completed their work. However, it is the responsibility of pet owners to verify the gates have been closed securely before allowing their pets access to the yard. If not already in place, installation of a springloaded hinge is recommended (at homeowner expense). Watering Grass, shrubs, and flowers will not grow without adequate water. Homeowners are responsible for ensuring their lawns and flower beds receive adequate water. Here are some guidelines: • Begin watering lawns when the overnight temperatures are a minimum of 600 or higher. • Watering in the early morning (before the sun is out) is optimal for both lawns and flowerbeds. • As a rule of thumb – watering lawns 2-3 times a week for 10-15 minutes for rotor zone areas and 5-10 minutes for spray zone areas is recommended. • Flowerbeds and shrubs may require additional watering depending on the type of material planted. • It is suggested that you coordinate with your neighbor regarding watering of the side yards and flower beds. Overwatering can result in mold, drainage issues, and drowning of plants or sod. • Shrubs and flowers absorb most of their moisture through their root systems. It is recommended to water the ground around the plants instead of the leaves. • Early morning is the recommended time for watering bedding plants. Watering in the heat of the day can result in leaf scorch (plant sunburn), and watering at night can cause mildew. • If you have extensive flower beds or plantings, you may want to consider the installation of a drip-watering system to provide specific hydration to these areas.

Health & Fitness Committee By Laurie Solomon
The Health & Fitness Committee would like to thank our new Committee member George Roughton. George has been instrumental in getting our fitness equipment back in good working order. The new vendor came out on 5/24/22 and repaired quite a few items. All pieces of equipment are numbered, and a problem issue clipboard is placed by the trainer’s office. This allows residents to report the piece of equipment and the nature of the problem. Each week this list is given to Traci for forwarding to the vendor. This procedure will expedite the repair process and keep the equipment working properly. The Fitness Center Guidelines have been relocated to a more visible location for residents and guests in order to familiarize them with the rules. On June 15 Northeast Georgia Medical Center presented a lunch and seminar on Diabetes. Diabetes is a chronic health condition that affects how your body turns food into energy. Type 1 Diabetes occurs early in life and is an autoimmune reaction where your pancreas does not make insulin. Once diagnosed the patient needs to take insulin on a daily basis. Type 2 Diabetes is the preventable form and unfortunately 35 million Americans have this type. In Type 2 the body is unable to make enough insulin and properly use the insulin it does produce. It can develop
Page 12
over many years with no symptoms while still damaging the body. The main cause of Type 2 is being overweight and living an unhealthy lifestyle. Prediabetes is when your blood sugar levels are higher than normal and raises your risk for Type 2, heart disease, and stroke. Many of us are grandparents and the number of teens diagnosed with Prediabetes has risen substantially. One in four adolescents have elevated blood sugar levels and are in danger of developing Diabetes. The risk factors include being overweight, physically inactive, having a family member with Diabetes, and a mother who had it when she was pregnant. Read food labels carefully and you will see that added sugar goes by many different names. Soda, sweetened tea, fruit juice, pasta sauce, alcoholic beverages, ketchup, breads, baked goods, and processed foods all have a high sugar content. Engaging in a regular exercise program can increase the ability of insulin to get sugar out of the blood and into the body’s cells for energy. A nutritionally balanced eating plan combined with a consistent pattern of moderate exercise is key to avoiding Type 2 Diabetes. Food can be your friend or your enemy, so choose what you put into your body wisely. Please continue to utilize and enjoy our Fitness Center.

TOWN HALL RECAP AND UPDATES The HOA Board Updates is a new article that will appear as a regular article in the Waterfall going forward. The intent of this article is to provide a recap of the most recent Townhall Meeting that was held on April 27. The Board responded to both questions submitted before the meeting, as well as questions from the audience. The following is a recap of some of the items discussed. Browns Bridge Entrance –The large Cresswind sign at the entrance is due to be repainted in June. Signage on the guardhouse indicating Resident and Vendor lanes will be replaced with larger type/font for easier reading and appropriate placement is being evaluated. In addition, the guardhouse will be repainted in the fall. New Trails – The Trails Club will be evaluating and identifying potential areas for new trails. Once their recommendations are received, the Board will thoroughly evaluate the proposed locations, including potential impact on residents. Sections 3B and 3C Mailbox Kiosk – The initial efforts to install the kiosks were delayed in part by the Covid 19 pandemic. But more significantly by increased costs required to meet standards and requirements established by both the City of Gainesville and the United States Postal Service. This project continues undergo evaluation and planning. Landscape Maintenance – The Board has established an ad hoc (short-term) committee to review our current Landscape Maintenance contract. The committee will clarify our requirements and develop a Request for Quote (RFQ) that will be sent to multiple vendors to solicit bids for services. Once these bids are received, they will be evaluated, and the Board will select a vendor. Pine Straw – Numerous questions and concerns were raised regarding pine straw. Pine straw is a significant portion of our annual budget, and prices have continued to increase, including a significant increase in November 2021. The Board has adopted a new pine straw distribution and application procedure that will be implemented in 2023.
on common area property as well as residential property. Per our Charter, trees on residential property are the responsibility of the individual homeowner for removal and/or replacement. The Board will be working with a certified arborist to evaluate the existing trees on common property. The goal is to define and implement an effective remediation and/or removal and replacement plan that will provide long-term health and safety of these trees. Traffic Safety and Road Use (TSRU) Plans – Implementation of several of the proposed improvements suggested by the TSRU work group was delayed due to the recent repaving of Cresswind Parkway. Now that the paving is completed, the Board has approved some of the suggested improvements. However, it is important to remember that safety on the roads is the responsibility of all residents, both drivers and pedestrians. Montgomery Gate Entrance – The Montgomery Gate has been a concern for a long time. Traffic safety in this area concerns not only residents of Cresswind, but anyone who uses Montgomery Drive. Therefore, decisions regarding use of the Montgomery Gate must be thoroughly evaluated. The Board asks for your patience as we continue to consider the most appropriate solution for safety and resident convenience. Dead Plants – Unfortunately there are numerous dead or dying plants throughout Cresswind, both on common and residential property. Residents are responsible for removal and replacement of dead plants on their property, including Kolter installed plants. Residents will receive communication from the Community Manager notifying them of their responsibilities if they do not remove and replace dead or dying plants in a timely manner. Dead plants on common property are replaced as quickly as possible given availability and appropriate planting times. Sign and Lamp Post Maintenance – Numerous signposts and light posts throughout the community need painting or other maintenance. The Community Manager will contract to have the repair and painting done in the near future.
Tree Removal and Replacement – Recent storms have played havoc on existing trees, both July/August 2022

The Heart of the Problem: Why a Blue Ribbon is Not Always First Place As we conclude Men’s Health Month, our thoughts typically include the blue ribbons that bring awareness to prostate cancer. Blue ribbons honor those currently battling and those who have survived prostate cancer. Since cancer is the #2, cause of death for all men, recognizing blue ribbons is important. However, as a cardiologist, we know that the causes of death in men vary depending on age and that the #1 cause of death in men (and women) is heart disease. According to the most recent national vital statistics report from 2018, by the Center for Disease Control (CDC), heart disease and stroke account for 28.4% of deaths in men followed by cancer at 22.5%. Not surprisingly, in the “machoman” age range of less than 45, the #1 cause of death is accidents. Just as accidents are preventable, so too are early deaths from heart disease. The major risk factors for developing heart disease include male gender, age, family history, smoking, elevated cholesterol, high blood pressure, physical inactivity, being overweight or obese, and diabetes mellitus. We are born with the first three of these risk factors and they cannot be changed. Importantly, the remaining risk factors are modifiable with lifestyle changes. Simply put, stop smoking, eat a low-fat low-cholesterol diet, get daily exercise, achieve your ideal body weight, and stay on your medicines. These lifestyle changes can reduce your risk of heart disease.
Allison Dupont, MD
So while we honor the blue ribbons let us not forget that the #1 cause of death in men is heart disease and stroke and let’s all vow to do something about it!

Help us provide children in Hall County with the books they need in their homes this summer and beyond. You can sponsor a child for a year with just a $36 tax deductible contribution. CRESSWIND BOWLING LEAGUE
Submitted by: Paul Capal The Cresswind Bowling League completed the 2021/22 season on April 13th. The winning team was The Ten Pins, Cheryl Dizard, Will Adams, Duane Condra and John Stevens. The Ten Pins defeated the first half winning team, The Pin Pals in a roll off on April 13th. Congratulations to the winners and all Cresswind bowlers on a fine season. We look forward to everyone coming back for the 2022/23 season that will begin September 7, 2022. The Cresswind Bowling League began the Summer Season of 10 weeks June 1 - August 3, 2022. This summer we will bowl on Wednesday mornings at Station 300 on Browns Bridge Road starting with warmups at 9:45am. If you have any interest in bowling as a substitute or joining a team fulltime, please contact any of the club board members. We are a handicap league and invite anyone at Cresswind to come out and enjoy a fun time with friends and neighbors. For the 2022/23 season we will be moving back to Stars and Strikes in Buford. There will be a kickoff meeting on August 10th in the clubhouse ballroom at 10:00am. This meeting will be to go over the upcoming season and to organize teams. We encourage anyone interested in bowling this fall to attend this meeting. Board contact and additional information can be found using the link on the Cresswind at Lake Lanier website under Clubs.
CIC INVESTMENT CLUB
Submitted By: Cathy Hoskinson On May 19th, the CIC Investment Club invited the Cresswind community to join them for a Lunch and Learn Program with Moore’s Wealth Management on how to evaluate and review investment holdings during this rapidly changing market environment. The firm’s top two advisors, Chris Moore and Brian Moore, discussed how investments and money could be potentially falling through the cracks in retirement. Residents appreciated hearing their professional insights and information in these uncertain times. Financial education and information sharing are key components of CIC Investment Club meetings. If you are interested in the CIC Investment Club, we invite you to join us as a guest on the first Monday of the month from 1-3 pm in the clubhouse kitchen. Membership is limited to 30 residents who all actively participate in the research, evaluation, and investing opportunities of the club. Please contact Len Greco, Page 28
president, at lengreco1104@aol.com or Cathy Hoskinson, vice president, at cathy.hoskinson@gmail. com to attend a meeting and learn more about the group.
THE COOKING CLUB
Submitted By: Jill Loftus Derby Day has made the history books of Cresswind. It was the windiest and coldest day but despite all of the things we could not control it was a very successful event. The Hats were amazing along with the food and the decor. The Resident races were crazy good. This has become one of the hot spots to be. Let the Cooking Club know if you are interested in partaking in this race for next year. We could not have done this event without our volunteers. Each and every one was celebrated two weeks later with an appreciation dinner. At the moment we have postponed the Fish Fry. We are actively looking for a leader of this event. There is a playbook with guidelines and Cooking Club Board that will not let you fail. Let us know if you are interested in taking this on. Also, the Octoberfest is right around the corner, and we are looking for a leader. Many of our cooking club residences have great experience with these events. We are looking for people to share your knowledge. It is always a fun project to wrap yourself around for a minute. If you are interested, please contact Jill_Pastrick@yahoo.com. The Cooking Club’s Cooking School has offered several brand-new classes taught by our own Cresswind community and the return of a favorite cuisine and professional chef this year. We typically offer 1-2 classes each month for about 24 people for lunch and/or dinner. We’re delighted to present: • Cioppino, with Rob Demchak led by Arlene Teare. • Green Box Mushroom Field Trip led by Cindy Weber, Candice Jacobs, and Suzanne Edmonds. • Wine and Food pairing, with multiple chefs, led by Diane McIntee. • “Five Guys (and a Gal)” Mexican Brunch with Sid Jacobs, John Sherry, David Scoville, Don Johansen, Bill Hayden, and Nancy Gould led by Lynne Hayden • Italian Lunch and Dinner (2 days) with Chef Lori Ruzek led by Lisa Giblin • Lavender Lamb Farm led by Cindy Weber We are always looking for volunteers who are interested in joining our class manager team! Bring your ideas -- for Cresswind or professional chefs and contact Lynne Hayden (lhayden@salescape.com) to join us!

CRESSWIND NEIGHBORHOOD THEATRE
Submitted by: Rich St George The Cresswind Neighborhood Theatre is just coming off three sold-out shows that were presented in May called The Savannah Sipping Society. We had a BLAST performing the show and we hope you enjoyed it as much. From creating the ‘verandah’ to the fun costumes to the great characters (and all the other areas that needs to come together to make a show) we enjoyed every minute of it! (That is except for those that had to memorize all those lines! But they did to a GREAT JOB! didn’t they?) We are now prepping for our fall production It’s a Wonderful Life: A 1940 Radio Production. We will take you back to the 1940’s and what it was like to produce live a radio show. This would include actors playing multiple roles as well as sound effects created LIVE on stage. CRESSWIND GARDEN CLUB
Submitted by: Sarah Galshack We would like to give a big thank you to all the residents who supported our Hall County Master Gardener “In Our Own Backyards” Garden Walk. Our garden was visited by 175 Hall County residents and supported by many of our own residents as both volunteers and visitors. Folks had nothing but admiration for the beauty of our Common Ground. We invite all residents to attend our Garden Club meetings. We have speakers on a variety of interesting topics and occasionally do a field trip in the area. Please check the Daily Update for the topics and times of our meetings. If you are interested in our gardening events and projects at either the Community Garden or the adjacent Serenity Garden, then you may want to sign up for our Friends of the Garden newsletter. Periodic newsletters will have information on what is going on in the garden. Email Lance Haney at lancehaney1@gmail.com to be added to this list. Monarch Message Update: It is that time of year for Monarch releases. Lance Haney does this periodically in the garden, a fascinating process to watch. He will post on the Cresswind Facebook the day and time. We invite you to come and bring any children or grandchildren for a great learning experience. Summer heat and humidity has arrived! Stay cool!

GENEALOGY CLUB
Submitted by: Dave Dittmeier The Genealogy Club held its monthly meeting in April and continued the discussion of the release of the 1950’s Census. Several of the attendees volunteered that they had found themselves and family members in the Census records. This would have been the first census where individuals born after 1940 would be in the census. It was an interesting effort to locate oneself. Following a club-wide survey, it was decided that the Club would begin meeting bi-monthly, January – October. The next 2022 meeting to be held in June. The Genealogy Club is open to all residents who may be interested in researching their family tree. We meet the 4th Wednesday every other month January – October at 7:00 pm in the Georgia Room. Still want more information? Contact one of the facilitators: ~Howie Mueller accudart556@yahoo.com ~Dave Dittmeier DaDittmeier@gmail.com You might be a genealogist if . . . you can remember obscure information about your great-great-great grandfather, but not what you had for lunch.
LINE DANCE CARDIO CLUB
Line Dancing is My Cardio! Submitted By: Debbie Coursey-Prah Cardio Line Dance is a fun, high energy line dance class that challenges your mind and body. We know over 70 dances including medley dances, one of which has nearly 100 steps. It is NOT a beginner line dance class. Our main goals are aerobic exercise and fun, so we can’t slow the class down to teach newcomers. However, now is your chance! By the time this edition of the Waterfall is published, our new Cardio Line Dance training sessions will have started. Training sessions will be held on Wednesdays at 3-4 PM in the Georgia Room where you will learn the dances with the goal of joining the regular class when you feel comfortable. These sessions will be led by Lisa Phifer, Sherri Heckt-Boguski, and Debbie Coursey-Prah. We encourage anyone joining the training sessions to attend the regular Cardio Line Dance classes to dance the dances that you have learned so far! By joining the regular classes, you will also have the opportunity to learn any new dances from the very beginning. Visit our website for information and links to training videos for some of the dances we do. More videos are being added regularly. Come visit the Line Dance Cardio class on Sundays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays at 6:30 to 8:00 PM in the Georgia Room or join our new training sessions. Happy dancing!!!

LIVING STYLISHLY CLUB
Submitted By: Mimi Szutz Living Stylishly Club recently had the pleasure of honoring one of our founding members, Harriett Gershkowitz, with a Farewell Open House in April. Harriett, along with a few visionary Cresswind ladies, formed our first ladies club “Fun with Fashion” in 2016. This original club evolved to our current Living Stylishly organization, and our members are enjoying a variety of activities year around. Our Farewell Open House was the perfect opportunity to thank Harriett for her years of planning and organizing events as the club president. Cresswind will miss her, and we wish her the best with her to move to Florida. In May, our members brushed up on our artistic talents and enjoyed painting “outside the lines”. Our Paint, Sip, and Party was held at the Outside the Lines pottery studio in Dawsonville, and it was a huge success. We learned painting techniques while laughing and sharing artistic stories. Thank you, Arlene Teare and Flo Swartz for organizing this fun afternoon of painting and partying. We are positive that the wine and Arnold Palmer Tea, along with the assorted snacks, enhanced our creativity.
PICKLEBALL CLUB NEWS
Submitted By: Brenda Newman On April 29th our club hosted the Pickleball club from Cresswind Twin Lakes to a round robin style tournament. Lake Lanier players were paired with players from Twin Lakes, so everyone got the opportunity to play with and meet some new people. Lunch and snacks were provided by the physicians from Specialty Orthopedics. We thank Dr. Krynetskiy and Dr. Kancherla for their time and support of both of our Pickleball clubs, and for sharing information about their practice. We are looking forward to future events with our new friends at Twin Lakes. The courts have been busy with Leagues and Scrambles this spring. We have launched a new team league format this spring with play on Monday mornings and Wednesday evenings. Watch club emails for pop-up Scramble announcements throughout the summer. Also remember that the warmer weather has shifted our Open Play to early morning hours Monday thru Thursday & Saturday (8-10am), plus Sunday evening (6-8pm). The club has been fortunate to purchase two more Douglas nets and a VAPTR water removal machine thanks to a generous donation from the Northeast Georgia Health System. The new nets will be placed on courts 4A and 4B. The VAPTR will help expedite water removal from the courts, increasing our playing time after rainstorms.

The CLL Random Acts of Kindness Team (RAOK)
Since July 2021, a small team of us have been anonymously and randomly delivering ‘Butterfly Blessings’ throughout our community, to help promote feelings of hope, support, and belonging among our CLL friends and neighbors. To date, Butterfly Blessings has ‘magically’ appeared in the front shrub bed of nearly 170 resident-homes in the form of solar-powered ‘butterfly’ ornaments and small garden statues, only to disappear ‘on magic wings’ several days later to bring Blessings to another CLL neighbor. Many of these 170 homeowners have reached back to the RAOK team to express their gratitude and delight at having received a Butterfly Blessing. Here are excerpts of several notes received by the RAOK team. • “Thank you for the beautiful deer and butterfly in my yard this morning. Our triplet 7-year-old grandchildren were so excited to find it sitting by the tree. What a sweet thing to do in this neighborhood that we love so much after just two months of living here.” • “Thank you so much for our beautiful surprise when we arrived home yesterday evening. As has been said, a little kindness goes a long way. It is appreciated more than you know.” • “What a lovely surprise—the deer and butterfly put smiles on our faces! It is comforting to know someone thought about us in such a kind way. Cresswind is an amazing place to live! We will be sorry to see it “fly away,” but knowing it will make someone else smile is wonderful! Thank you!” • “Thank you for the Butterfly Blessings! I was surprised and thrilled to see them in my front yard this morning. It started my day with a smile on my face, and gratitude in my heart for my friends and neighbors in Cresswind. Love to all that participate in this.” • “Thank you so much for the thoughtful drop off! It is Page 34
very appreciated as I am going through life changing decisions right now. May I keep her a little while? And by the way, who is this?” • “Thank you so much for your lovely note and beautiful deer. I feel blessed every time I look at her. You make me feel truly blessed to live at Cresswind and to be thought of so kindly.” • “Imagine my surprise when I went to turn out the porch light last night and saw some strange-looking lights in our garden bed! I had to put on my shoes and go out to look closer at them. I was delighted and immediately thought about the random acts of kindness group. I am the caretaker for my husband, and we don’t get out much anymore except for doctors’ appointments. This means so much to me to think that someone cares about us. Thank you sincerely!” BUTTERFLIES…have long been associated with good omens, good things ahead, hope, and encouragement, etc. What better symbol to use to send good thoughts and Blessings to our CLL friends and neighbors. The RAOK project aligns well with our CLL Community Garden Monarch Butterfly project, where living butterflies are born, fed, and freed as symbols of hope and good tidings.

SOCIAL SINGLES
Submitted by: Elaine Vetter Social Singles finished spring with several walks and other activities. Wednesdays in May found us enjoying the ‘Blue Sky’ lunch concerts in downtown Gainesville with some members walking the mile and half Wilshire Trail beforehand. If you stopped by the clubhouse on the evening of May 14th, you would have noticed a lot of commotion from the 3rd floor where 30 members gathered to try their luck at different board and card games. Lots of fun for those who attended, and we plan to schedule another event soon. Summer plans include a trip back to the Escape Room in Gainesville, gold mining in Dahlonega, tubing in Helen, a combo Luau/Beach party in the clubhouse, along with bowling, more hikes and lunches, and the increasingly popular monthly evening mingles. We also continue to send volunteers twice monthly to the Good Samaritans Food Bank and we’re again planning painting parties for the Empty Bowl lunch event that benefits the Georgia Mountain Food Bank. If you are single and would like to get involved, have ideas on how we can connect and/or want more information please access our link on the Cresswind website and share your contact information. We’d love to have you join us.

TENNIS CLUB
Submitted by: Sandy Barmak The active season of competitive league play is over. The ladies USTA teams and the men’s Silverball team had a full and active season and will resume competition in the fall. Now is the time to get out and enjoy lots of tennis for just fun and exercise. Come out at 9 am for Open Play on Mondays for ladies, Wednesdays for men, and Fridays for mixed doubles. If you would like to participate in the 9:00 am Thursday ladies round robin, you can contact Judy Mota, jandjmota@msn. com. The courts are also reserved for mixed doubles on Wednesday evenings at 7:00 pm and Sunday afternoons at 2:00 pm and Saturday mornings at 9:00 am for men’s competitive play. It is a great place to meet other tennis players in our community. Of course, if you just want to go out and play with some friends, you can make a reservation on www.reservemycourt.com to be sure the courts are available. If practicing your strokes is what you desire, we now have a backboard. Kudos to Dan Brown and Roger Otto for organizing a successful Wednesday evening Men’s doubles league. The courts were full, and everyone enjoyed the friendly competition. This league was the newest addition to our Fall and Spring resident mixed doubles leagues and will be a tradition to continue. The tennis club continues to sponsor free clinics that are open to everyone in the community – you do not have to be a member of the tennis club to participate. We have a team of extraordinary volunteer instructors

What’s Happening
ARE YOU PREPARED FOR THE WEATHER? Thunderstorms, Tornados, Hurricanes – oh my!
The best plan is to have a plan before a storm hits. Are you ready? There are many resources available to help you create a Weather Plan. GET INFORMATION DIRECTLY FROM THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE Weather Radios: Hall County Emergency Management Agency (EMA) regularly assists residents with setup of weather radios, which can be an invaluable tool during an emergency. Weather radios provide information directly from the National Weather Service about weather conditions and emergency situations. Visit the National Weather Service website to learn more about purchasing a weather radio. Contact Hall County EMA if you need local assistance, Phone: 770-536-3132. CITIZEN’S ALERT SYSTEM: Sign up for weather alerts from Hall County at ready.hallcounty.org. Hurricanes: The hurricanes that affect Georgia are severe tropical storms that form in the southern Atlantic Ocean, Caribbean Sea, and Gulf of Mexico. Scientists can now predict hurricanes, but Georgia, being a coastal state, is particularly at risk. Thunderstorms & Lightning: All thunderstorms are dangerous because they can produce strong winds, lightning, tornadoes, hail, and flash flooding. The typical thunderstorm is 15 miles in diameter and lasts an average of 30 minutes.
Tornadoes: Tornadoes are nature’s most violent storms. They can appear suddenly without warning and can be invisible until dust and debris are picked up or a funnel cloud appears. Planning and practicing specifically how and where you take shelter is a matter of survival. DEVELOP A COMMUNICATIONS PLAN Your family may not be together when disaster strikes, so it is important to plan in advance: how you will contact one another and what you will do in different situations. READY HALL COUNTY GA at www.hallcounty.org/186/ READY-Hall-County has many suggestions for preparing for various weather and conditions we may encounter such as: 1. Have a safe place to go to in an emergency. It could be in your basement or a closet on the main level. Stay away from windows and even outside doors. 2. Have some supplies in the safe place location such as a. Water - 1 gallon per person per day, for at least 3 days, for drinking and sanitation, b. Radio - battery-powered or hand crank radio and a NOAA Weather Radio with tone alert, and extra bat teries for both, c. Whistle/air horn to call for help, d. Some TP and a bucket, e. A flashlight and extra batteries, f. Prescription medications and glasses, g. Pet food, extra water, pet supplies, toys and vacci nation forms. h. Important papers such as your driver’s license, passport, and your Plan in the Can, if you have one. i. Be aware that your cell phone may not work, or it may lose its charge.
POP-UP DRAIN EMITTER MAINTENANCE
Pop-up Emitters allow water captured through your drainage system to be released in water-safe locations like curbside drains. But if debris enters the drainage system through home gutters or backward through pop-up emitter cap leakage and not removed, it can result in clogging, preventing the flow of water away from the home. If clogged, water may backup and fill the home’s downspout, filling the gutter and overflow onto the home’s facia board. This may eventually cause mold along with facia and roofing rot. Homeowners should be aware of the potential risk if drainage is not monitored and cleaned when needed.
For helpful maintain instructions visit the Cresswind website > Resources > MTScapes and click on the link to “Tom Talks” videos. “Tom Talks” are videos that resident landscaping expert, Tom Randall, has developed providing Cresswind residents with information on topics such as your irrigation and landscaping needs!
• Cresswind Irrigation Tom Talk Guide • Drainage Maintain Tom Talk Video
Periodic maintenance is critical to the performance of every stormwater system. Without proper maintenance, the system will eventually fail due to buildup and structural issues. Routine upkeep can prevent costly rehabilitative and restorative repairs. Maintenance is the responsibility of the property owner. Page 38
