A BOX IN THE PANTRY

Written by Lynn Everitt-CE Resident

How an empty box sitting in my pantry brought joy back to grocery shopping.

After 40 plus years of grocery shopping the task of weekly grocery shopping had begun to be a chore that I dreaded every week. I would just rush thru the grocery store as quick as I could so I could check this off my chore list of things to do. Heck I don’t even enjoy going to Costco and I usually buy too much stuff.

One day I was talking to my neighbor, John, and he gave me an easy tip that has put joy back into my grocery shopping experience. He said he keeps an empty box in his pantry and when he is out shopping he

picks up a couple of items to add to his box each week. And when the box is full he then takes it to the Veterans Resource Center food bank that feeds veterans.

The next day I took the first empty box I received from on-line delivery service and placed it in the bottom of my pantry. The next time I went to the store, I thought about that box and the people who may be in need of whats going inside that box. When Publix has a BOGO, I put the free one in the box. When I see special sales, I grab a few for the box. Now instead of dreaded going grocery shopping, I look forward to it because it brings me joy to help. When I over buy at Costco, I put the extra in the box. Do you know that box fills up pretty quickly. Then I simply call the Military support Group in our neighborhood and they take it to the Veterans Resource Center food bank. It’s been so easy to do.

If you would like to help feed local veterans and would like to have a full box picked up for delivery to the Veterans Resource Center food pantry located at 66 McElroy Street, Winder, Georgia please call 678-780-6523.
