ADD is a subjective description, not a specific disease. The hour-long luncheon series, presented by clinical psychologist Dr. Donna Graham, who is also a Pine Grove parent, is open to anyone. IPSWICH – The drink, called by many names – Nelson's blood, killdevil, demon water, pirate's drink, navy neaters and Barbados liquor – helped create many fortunes in New England and made the 17th Century slave trade so profitable. Today, that drink is known simply as rum, and two childhood friends, Mat Perry and Evan Parker, have taken a page out of the North Shore's early history to produce at a distillery here several varieties of the once popular drink. They have not created their fortunes yet, but their Old Ipswich Rum is being sold and consumed from Newburyport to Washington, D.C. The local entrepreneurs created the Turkey Shore Distilleries in 2010 here in their home town and have been distilling award-winning rums since. In 2013, they plan to expand into space that will be vacated by Mercury Brewing Co. so they can produce more rum and sell it throughout New England. “It has been a good year. We have

The event is sponsored by the nonprofit Essex Heritage National Commission to help 21st Century residents learn how their ancestors made rum 175 years ago. “Join Essex Heritage at Turkey Shore Distilleries in Ipswich to enjoy an evening reconnecting to a significant part of New England's past, and taste a line of handcrafted, local rums,” the invitation reads. “Using table-grade sweet molasses and a custom-built 250gallon copper pot still, Old Ipswich Rum is a true American product destined to awaken the New England spirit in all of us.” Reservations are required. The price is $17 for Essex Heritage members and $24 for nonContinued on page 3
