REGIONAL – With the snows flying and temperatures in the teens, it may be hard to believe that baseball is only a few weeks away.

The Boston Red Sox equipment truck has left for Florida, a festive annual event at Fenway Park, which team president Larry Lucchino called “a harbinger of spring.� Spring training practices start this week. The first games are only a week away.

NEWBURYPORT – Last week the signs went up in the windows of Comina, a home furniture and furnishings store, that announced the store would be closing this week because its lease could not be renegotiated.

After six years on Pleasant Street, two doors from the U.S. Post Office, the Nicholas family, which owns nine Comina stores in New England, faced an impasse in negotiations for a new lease with building owner, Dave Williamson.

The signs in the window at the dog-friendly store said: “We'll miss all of you, especially our four-legged friends.�

The news spread like an old-fashioned fire through the streets of this historic seaport town. Other store owners, like Beverly Buccheri at BC Essentials three stores away and Amy Williams, who owns a women's clothing store, were distraught.

Customers began to rally, sending emails to the store and to the store owners, asking them to reconsider closing the Newburyport Comina store.

Loyal customer Leslie Barton of Newburyport wrote to Amy Nicholas, the chief operating officer, “I am so so sad to see the store closing. I love the girls, Mary, the shop, the furniture and everything Comina represents. “Since we have moved in this past May, my husband and I have spent a lot of money and a lot of time with them decorating our new home. They have been the best and I have loved everything I have gotten. You have also provided incredible service in standing behind your products as well. We have sent numerous people to the store and they have had the same experience.�

Ludwig Bstieler, a New Hampshire customer, also wrote asking Nicholas to reconsider. “There are no stores in the area that come even remotely close to carrying such sophisticated, contemporary, and beautiful furniture like you do that is being explained to the clientele by a well informed, unpretentious, and polite staff,� he wrote in an email to the store headquarters in Connecticut.

Bstieler was surprised at the decision to close, he wrote, because of all “the opportunities that seem to abound in the greater area of Newburyport.�

The Pettengill House would like to extend our sincere thanks to the community for the tremendous support we received for our eighth annual Winter Coat Drive. The donations we received through local schools, businesses, faith organizations, and individuals enabled us to provide 395 coats to individuals and families in need. An additional 282 coats were provided to local agencies, ensuring those in need would have continued access this winter.

We would also like to thank our volunteers who donated their time and energy to make this program possible: Betty Breau, Karen French, David Mackie, Jean Mercer, Bethany Noseworthy and the students of Amesbury Academy Charter Public School, Stephanie Pellegrini, Ralph and Taylor Turgeon, and Laurie Wile.

TOWN OF ROWLEY PLANNING BOARD NOTICE OF PUBLIC HEARING Pursuant to MGL, Ch. 40A, §5, the Rowley Planning Board will hold a public hearing on petition of the Rowley Board of Selectmen on Wednesday, February 27, 2013 at 7:30 p.m., at the Town Hall Annex, 39 Central Street, Rowley, MA to consider amending the Zoning District Map of the Town of Rowley (“the Map”) by: (1) transferring a portion of Lot 34 on Rowley Assessor’s Map 14 from the Business/ Light Industry District to the Retail District; and amending the Bylaw by: (2) revising section 8.6.5.1 by changing the Special Permit Granting Authority for illuminated signs from the Board of Selectmen to the Planning Board , (3) replacing text in Section 4.0 that refers to other sections in the Bylaw by inserting the exact text of those other sections and renumbering accordingly and by adding a “grandfather” clause for all existing Accessory In-Law Apartments in Section 6.6, (4) revising Section 5.4 by changing “zoning administrator” to “building inspector”, adding a limitation on expansions that are approved by the building inspector, adding standards to guide the ZBA in the exercise of its discretion, and small text changes, (5) revising Sections 6.2 (Multi-Family) and 6.7 (New England Village Development) by changing the formula used to calculate density allowed, and (6) adding a definition for “Solar Photovoltaic Installation” to Section 2.0 (Definitions) and allowing such installations in the Outlying District and (the Coastal Conservation District subject to site plan review by the Planning Board.

A copy of the text of the proposed bylaw amendments, and a map showing the portion of Lot 34 that would be transferred from the Building/Light Industry District to the Retail District, may be inspected at the Planning Board office at the aforesaid address during regular business hours. Any person interested or wishing to be heard on the zoning proposals should appear at the public hearing at the time and place designated.

ROWLEY - Rowley Pack 15 recently celebrated their Blue and Gold banquet to showcase the birth of scouting and for Webelos II scouts to cross over into Boy Scouts. As family and friends gathered at Newbury Elementary school for the celebration, they feasted on pizza, calzones , salads and desserts.

Den Leader Mary-Clare Dalzell explained that each den was responsible for making a dessert centerpiece. There was a wide range of designs from cub bear cupcakes to a perfect bullseye archery cake and everything in-between.

Ms. Dalzell explained that in addition to the crossing over ceremony Den 8 & 9 Webelos were presented with the highest rank in Cub Scouts: the Arrow of Light award. Their outstanding achievement was recognized by Senator Bruce Tarr as well as Representative Bradford Hill who were there to personally present a citation to commemorate their hard work to each of the following Webelos II scouts: Lee Dalzell, Connor Perley, Lucas Goldsmith, David Dahlke, Luke Confalone, Ellis Roach, Liam Brophy, Ben Enos, Jack Niska, Matthew Miller all from Rowley and Brayden Toth of Newbury. Den Leader Kerry Perley commented on how much fun they have had the past five years and that all the Scouts crossing over into Boy Scouts will continue on their journey.

Ms. Dalzell said the ceremony was concluded by a charge, which was presented by Eagle Scout David Toth the father of Brayden. Mr. Toth charged them to always remember the ideals you have learned as a Cub Scout and to live up to them, every day; especially the Cub Scout motto: Do Your Best. In conclusion he explained “the arrow points us in a specific direction. It points forward on the Scouting trail. It leads us higher towards greater tasks and new experiences. Some will come as second nature, but most, the ones worthwhile, will be difficult and require all of the skills and strength you have gained. They will lead you upwards in the footsteps of leaders of state, astronauts, captains of industry, and even small town doctors. I charge each of you to soar to the heights of the Eagles.”

He noted that Newburyport's economy is thriving with a growing number of tourists and new residents.

People complain that it is difficult to find a home to buy or rent in the increasingly popular city.

And that is before real estate developer Stephen Karp builds a new hotel or the Newburyport Redevelopment Authority proceeds with its plans for the Merrimack River waterfront project.

“We currently live close to Portsmouth and usually shop stores in Boston and vicinity to find furniture and interior design items, including Circle Furniture and Crate & Barrel in Burlington, among others. So do many others we know in Southeast NH. The reason is simple: There are no sophisticated interior design and furniture stores

north of the Boston area. That is, except for yours.”

Then the vendors weighed in. Jos Nicholas, who has been buying for the stores since his mother opened the first one in West Hartford, CN, more than a quarter century ago, got calls from several of the companies that sell their products at the shop.

The owner of Mariposa in Manchesterby-the-Sea was shocked that the Comina shop in Newburyport was closing. She said that shop sells more of her elegant tableware and well-designed gift ware than almost any store in the country.

Vanguard, a North Carolina furniture maker, was also stunned that Comina would close its Newburyport shop.

Amy Nicholas said “It was a very hard decision (to close the store). With such an outpouring of sentiment, it really

made us think. We heard them. We really appreciate it.”

So Jos Nicholas and Williamson made a last ditch effort to negotiate a new lease. They reached a preliminary deal by the middle of last week.

“It has been a roller coaster ride,” said store manager Mary Donahoe.

By Thursday morning, Nicholas texted Donahoe that it was a done deal.

“We're back,” Donahoe cheered.

Customers began showing up Thursday afternoon to congratulate Donahoe and her team, Karen Wood and Lisa Ridabock, on the owners' decision to keep the store open.

One customer who walks by the shop on the way to the Post Office daily said he is confused.“One day you are open,” he said. “The next you are closed. Now you are open again. Yeah!”

But the Red Sox are not the only baseball around.

If you are a baseball fan, like so many New Englanders are, you may also want to come out to watch how base ball (it was spelled as two words until the 1880s) was played in its early days, more than a century ago.

The Essex Base Ball Organization, a non-profit group that strives to educate and recreate baseball as it was played in the 1860s, is gearing up for its 12th season with its first game set for the first weekend in May at the SpencerPierce-Little farm in Newbury. Early spring practices start in April.

Expanding to four teams this year, the league plays games throughout the summer, often attracting other vintage base ball teams from across the country.

This year, the league is adding a team from Rockingham, NH, to join with three teams that played last year – the Newburyport Clamdiggers, the Lowell Nine and the Lynn Live Oaks.

Baseball has evolved a lot over the more than a century and a half it has been America's game. The Essex Base Ball teams play a very different game.

Pitching is done underhand. Overhand pitching was started in 1885. There are no gloves. A hit can be caught on the

bounce for an out. And any ball that is hit between the lines is fair even if it bounces into foul territory before it passes out of the infield.

The players, or ballists, as they were called in the 19th century, dress in period reproduction uniforms – long trousers and a shield shirt or in a later style lace shirt and knickers.

They play mostly in open fields, not large stadiums. Much like in the movie, A Field of Dreams, there may be corn growing in the outfield and goats running freely through the game.

To the regret of the league's 50 players, there are no huge salaries or signing bonuses. “I wish,” said Brian Sheehy, one of the original organizers.

“I am waiting for mine in the mail.”

The vintage baseball league was started by the Danvers Historical Society, and the first sponsor was the Essex Heritage Foundation.

Maybe because baseball and beer have always gone well together, the league's primary sponsor now is Ipswich Ale. And spectators, called crankers in the old days, can enjoy an Ipswich Ale and other beers at the games, which are often played in conjunction with popular festivals and on holiday weekends.

modern professional baseball. In the three hours it may take the Red Soxs to beat the New York Yankees, the Essex Base Ball teams can play a full two games.

Playing base ball the old fashioned way may seem simple. But it is not cheap. The uniforms cost $150 each, the bats $80 and the balls $20. So the non-profit organization is also looking this spring to find other sponsors to join Ipswich Ale in sponsoring the games.

The revival of vintage base ball began in the 1980s. Sheehy said there were teams in New York and Rhode Island 30 years ago. And the sport has been very popular in the Midwest for decades.

So when you are sitting at Fenway Park this year or kicking back in front of the TV with an ale, understand that the highly paid athletes you are watching owe a lot to men like Alexander Joy Cartwright and Doc Adams and many others who formed the first team, the Knickerbocker Base Ball Club, in New York City in 1845.

Your Pet’s Tooth Health: Problems & Solutions Part 2 of 2 Muddy Creek Animal Care Center By: Dr. Blake Liebert An evaluation of your pets’ oral health should begin at the annual examination. During this examination your veterinarian will collect a recent medical history and perform a complete physical exam, including an evaluation of the oral cavity.

If your pet is displaying signs of dental disease, a sedated oral exam and dental cleaning will be recommended. As this procedure requires general anesthesia, appropriate presurgical testing may be recommended. The dental procedure will include a hand scaling, removing the large pieces of tartar, an ultrasonic and subgingival scaling, to remove the smaller tartar buildup, and dental radiographs. If disease is documented, various types of intervention or tooth extraction will be recommended. Finally, the teeth will be

polished, and have fluoride applied to the teeth surface.

Home dental care is equally as important as the in-office procedures. Regular daily brushing, topical applications, and approved chew products are all appropriate to maintain good oral health. The Veterinary Oral Health Council (vohc.org) has a list of approved veterinary diets, supplements, and chews that provide additional protection for your pets’ oral health. I recommend speaking with your veterinarian regarding any of these products to ensure safety and efficacy for your pets’ specific needs.

While February is Pet Dental Health Month, year round awareness is truly required to keep your pets healthy and happy. Daily home care, annual examinations, and appropriate professional cleanings are equal components

to a complete dental health regimen.

It still amazes me every day how many people don’t take care of their teeth. I’m not even talking about the 50% of the population that do not see a dentist on a regular basis. I’m referring to people I actually see – even people who have made a significant investment in “fixing” dental problems. While there are many who practice excellent home-care habits, there are more who don’t.

There is certainly a bit of ancient wisdom that applies to preventive dentistry. Going back 5500 years ago, Babylonians, Greeks, Romans, Egyptians, Africans, Mid-Easterners, and Asians recognized that the daily accumulations on teeth could result in both tooth and gum troubles. The “chewing stick”, still used in many parts of the world as an oral health aid, is simply a small twig that is chewed until the end is frayed into a brushlike configuration that can be effectively used to clean around and between the teeth.

A few hundred years ago people began to embed bristles of one sort or another into handles to form the precursors of modern-

day toothbrushes. Robert Bunon (1702 – 1748), a contemporary and compatriot of Pierre Fouchard (1678 - 1761), known in the dental world as the ‘father of modern dentistry’, has been called the ‘father of oral hygiene’. In 1815, Levi Spear Parmly wrote in a booklet entitled Summum Bonum that “… a hard open brush with a composition made into paste should be used at night, after which a waxed thread should be passed between all the teeth for the purpose of cleaning them”.

This stuff isn’t new. By the late 1800’s oral micro-organisms were being identified and both preventive and restorative dentistry were taking shape.

This historic progression may be interesting to dentists, but the sad truth is that humanity has known for over 5000 years that “stuff ” should be removed from teeth to prevent decay, gum disease, and bad breath!

So, why is effective daily oral hygiene not practiced by everyone in the world? Why do people allow their mouths and the mouths of their children to deteriorate?

It can’t be economic – nothing is cheaper that a twig and some string. It begs the question: why doesn’t everyone do this simple routine?

Is the answer to this world problem ignorance or apathy?

By John McCarthy,• Rowley Realty Multiple offers. These are the words seller’s love to hear and ones that buyers do not. There are two big reasons that multiple offers are being seen again, first a low inventory of available homes and historically low interest rates.

There are currently more buyers in the market. Sellers after years of being in denial on their home’s worth, (my house is worth more than one down the street because we put in a new toilet and curtain rod) are now putting their home for sale at a realistic price point.

All this provides for the perfect storm of multiple offers.

There are things that both buyers and sellers should know when presented with a multiple offer situation.

Presentation: A seller can accept any offer, at any time. They don’t have to wait for you to rewrite your counteroffer and they don’t need to wait for everyone to “submit their best and final offer”. They can take their time or they can jump on an offer they deem worthy.

Just as importantly they can refuse any or all offers. Lastly they can counter all offers (by countering an offer from a buyer you reject their original offer). Countering all can be tricky however as you can only accept one. Ask your REALTOR® for advice on the best (and legal) way of handling this.

Buyer Beware: As a buyer knowledge is power. Get to know what a seller wants. Most will

accept the highest price, of course but financing, closing date and deposit size all matter. I’ve had sellers refuse higher offers due to the amount financed or in two cases because a buyer was inflexible with their closing date. The closing dates would have had the seller move out prior to their children finishing school. A deal breaker.

Seller Tips: Just like a buyer, knowledge is power. What is important to your buyer? Are they willing to offer more or concede other points like closing date? Are they preapproved for a mortgage and if so is it with a company or individual that your REALTOR® is familiar with?

One thing I tell a buyer is not to worry about the other offers.

Don’t think in terms of I am competing with everyone else what should I do, think where would I be comfortable in my offer. If you aren’t willing to go over a certain dollar figure, don’t. Just assume that you need to put your best offer forward. Don’t assume you will get a counteroffer. Put your best foot forward and if you didn’t get the home than it wasn’t meant to be. I have had a number of buyers who love the home they just viewed, are ready to make an offer and decide not to because they don’t want to get into “a bidding war”. This to me seems foolish. Why not make an offer and see what happens. If it is really a home you want, fight for it.
