Beware of Scams, Identity Thieves

By Stewart Lytle, Reporter ––––––––––––––––– AMESBURY – An urgent, collect call comes from a grandson, traveling in Mexico for spring break, to his grandmother back in Massachusetts. The distraught grandson, who doesn't even sound like himself, needs money to get out of jail and asks the grandmother to wire it to him. And the grandson pleads don't tell his parents because it would only worry them. The problem is that the real grandson is in Mexico, but not in jail. Nor is it he on the other end of the telephone call. A scammer has read the grandson's post on Facebook about his upcoming trip to Mexico and found the name of the young man's grandmother on line as well. Now he is trying to swindle the elderly woman, who loves her grandson, out of money. According to Corey Pilz and Allison Fiorello, Photo by Stewart Lytle who work for Attorney General Martha Coakley, U.S. Rep. John Tierney lends his support such scams and many like them are growing in against identity theft. number as scammers from around the country and the world employ new and ever changing tactics to steal money from unsuspecting Bay State residents. But Pilz, who is the deputy second director of the public inquiry and assistance center, said, “At the AG's office, every day is about consumer protection.” Many scams come through the telephone with attempts to gain the name, address and hopefully Social Security number for their targets. With that information, thieves and scammers can open bank accounts or seek bank loans in the victim's name. They can also secure credit cards in Photo by Stewart Lytle that person's name. Sometimes the scammers claim to Allison Fiorello and Corey Pilz with the Attorney General's Continued on page 3

SALISBURY – Two years ago, when Taylor Brown was 16, she and her cousin went for a ride on the cousin's scooter. The girls stopped at a traffic light on a busy road, waiting to make a turn. Someone motioned for them to go, and Taylor’s cousin hit the gas pedal and ran into the rear of a dump truck, which had turned at the same time without seeing the scooter. The cousin suffered only minor injuries, but Taylor, a Triton High School student, was thrown from the scooter. At that moment her life changed forever. Taylor hit her head on the pavement and suffered traumatic brain injury. She spent the next nine months in hospitals and rehabilitation facilities. At first, Taylor improved, but then things turned for the worse. Taylor, once a competitive swimmer, cannot talk, walk or take care of herself. She can understand what is said to her and what is going on
