FREE A Long Walk to Water

By Stewart Lytle, Reporter ––––––––––––––––– NEWBURYPORT – In an exercise designed to show American children what some African children have to do to survive, students last week gathered at the Belleville Congregational Church to experience what it would be like to have no running water in their house. Sue Heersink, who has been an active volunteer with the Beads Water Project, organized the program on Friday afternoon when Newburyport schools let out early. In the stage room at the church, Heersink divided the children into three groups, each in a different economic condition. The wealthy group was called the Land of Plenty. Those students were served cookies, milk and juice by a waiter. The middle class group was called the Land of Just Enough. Ipswich Celebrates Restaurant Week

By Stewart Lytle, Reporter ––––––––––––––––– IPSWICH – The town's director of reCreation and culture was thinking recently about how different the dining experience in Ipswich is as compared to her visit with her father years ago to the famed Automat in New York City. “The Automat lacked humanity,” wrote Kerry Bates. “Food is more than an assembly line output.” Too many restaurants today are like the Automat, she wrote. Ordering food at a corporately owned and operated Mexican food eatery, diners are asked to select at the first sign their choice of a taco or burrito. At the second sign, they may select their choice of beef, bean or chicken. And on to the third and fourth signs for other ingredients and sides.
