AMESBURY — Thatcher Kezer, who has been this city's mayor for seven and a half years, believes the “wild and crazy” political era Amesbury suffered through in recent years is over. “We are beyond that,” said the mayor last week during a debate with Ken Gray, his opponent for reelection. Ipswich Fire Chief Rick Smith

Ipswich Fire Chief Richard “Rick” Smith retires effective October 20, 2013, after 20 years of service on the Ipswich Fire Department and more than 26 years in the fire service. Chief Smith was appointed December 30, 2011 after a national search. Citing the desire to spend more time with his family, Chief Smith gave his retirement notice to Town Manager Robin Crosbie in September. Said Town Manager Robin Crosbie, “It has been a pleasure to work with Rick. He was an important member of my management team and an advocate for the department. I am sorry to see him leave.” The Town will host a retirement reception for Chief Smith on Thursday October 17 from 10:00 am to Noon in the Town Manager’s Meeting Room, Ipswich Town Hall, 25 Green Street. Friends, colleagues and members of the public are invited to come by and offer their best wishes.
