Welcome to The Town Hall. We are delighted you have joined us for the 20th Year of Broadway by the Year®. Welcome to all of our subscribers, and a special welcome back to our Charter Subscribers, almost 200 strong, who have been with Scott, Barbara, and Ross for every year since the very beginning. Once again, Scott has assembled a group of Broadway luminaries to share their talents and unique styles. They make it possible for all of us to reminisce and go back in time. This year, we are taking a look at the last 20 years of Broadway. Those of you who want to go back further, don’t worry. Scott has included revivals from the last 20 years, so you can count on hearing many, many great songs over the Broadway’s incredible past. Town Hall has been witness to almost 100 years of Broadway history. While our stage, wings, fly space, and basement are too small to make it possible for us to be a legitimate Broadway theater, our acoustics, sight lines, and intimacy make us perfectly suited to hear music, voices and conversation, something Town Hall has been doing since it opened in 1921. And guess what, that’s exactly what you will hear tonight and every night of Broadway by the Year. Thank you to all of the people who make Broadway by the Year possible and so much fun. Thanks again to our series sponsor Bank of America, and to the Edythe Kenner Foundation; their support has been instrumental since we began, some 20 years ago. For everyone at Town Hall – thank you for coming, please enjoy the show.

ABOUT THE PROGRAM Come celebrate the 20th Anniversary Season of Broadway by the Year® with us, in what is bound to be the most exciting season, ever, in the storied history of this critically acclaimed series. Lauded across the board by publications such as Variety, Playbill, The Huffington Post, Time Out NY, and, of course, The NY Times — which called the series “Witty, breezily paced…informative…valuable..the right perspective of lighthearted nostalgia.” Author/Critic Scott Siegel created Broadway by the Year® for Town Hall, which he writes, directs, and hosts. Tony Award Winner, MacArthur Genius, and Broadway by the Year veteran, Bill Irwin refers to Siegel’s “Rumpled Charm,” with which the series host celebrates the great songs created for the Broadway stage and recounts, with humor, how they came to be.

SCOTT SIEGEL Scott Siegel has created more than 400 major concerts that have been performed all over the world. He has written/produced/directed concerts for Michael Feinstein, created scores of nightclub acts that have played at major clubs around the globe, but is, perhaps, best known as the creator/writer/director/ host of Town Hall’s signature series, Broadway by the Year®, which is currently celebrating its 20th critically acclaimed season. For more information about all of Scott’s shows, please visit Scott’s website at SiegelPresents.com

Ross Patterson Ross Patterson’s career in music has been as varied and eclectic as the many styles he loves to play. After completing his studies at The Oberlin Conservatory of Music, Ross spent two years on the road as Musical director for the Ice Capades before heading to NYC. There, he quickly became one of the most sought after pianists by singers. This led to Ross musical directing, arranging and recording for many of the top cabaret artists in New York. He has been honored twice with the Backstage Bistro award for outstanding musical direction. For the past nineteen years Ross has been the arranger, musical director and band leader for the critically acclaimed Broadway by the Year® concert series at The Town Hall. TOUR THE HISTORIC TOWN HALL Town Hall has played an integral part in the electrifying cultural fabric of New York City for more than 90 years. A group of Suffragists’ fight for the 19th Amendment led them to build a meeting space to educate people on the important issues of the day. During its construction, the 19th Amendment was passed, and on January 12, 1921 The Town Hall opened its doors and took on a double meaning: as a symbol of the victory sought by its founders, and as a spark for a new, more optimistic climate. In 1921, German composer Richard Strauss performed a series of concerts that cemented the Hall’s reputation as an ideal venue for musical performances. Since, Town Hall has been home to countless musical milestones: The US debuts of Strauss, and Isaac Stern; Marian Anderson’s first New York recital; in 1945, Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker introduced bebop to the world; Bob Dylan’s first major concert in ‘63; and much much more.
