“God help us to not raise a new generation of children/With high intelligence quotients and low caring and compassion quotients/With sharp competitive edges but dull cooperative instincts/With highly developed computer skills but poorly developed consciences/With a gigantic commitment to the big ‘I’ but little responsibility to the bigger ‘we’/With mounds of disconnected information without a moral context to determine its worth/With more and more knowledge and less and less imagination and appreciation for the magic of life that cannot be quantified or computerized/With more and more worldliness and less and less wonder and awe for the sacred and everyday miracles of life. God help us to raise children who care.” – Marian Wright Edelman One easy way to prepare children for life is to always ask them one simple question: What have you learned? Learning isn’t limited to classrooms. We have opportunities to learn all around us, but our children have to be taught to look for learning everywhere - they may not develop this skill naturally. Watching age appropriate films can be a fun activity in which children and adolescents can use their senses of imagination and fantasy while learning. Thomasville Community Resource Center continues to support and enhance the educational, spiritual and physical well-being of all people of Thomas County and the surrounding area, through educational, health and family supportive services. We recognize that learning happens everywhere for the youth we serve. The Covey Film Festival is an experiential learning event for our students, families, community and region. Just like in the films we showcase, our students are able to appreciate the fact that dreams can come true. The Covey Film Festival is an exciting, entertaining vehicle for inspiring community education and conversation, funding for TCRC youth programs and an opportunity to showcase Thomasville and the Red Hills region. An unlimited film pass for a family of four is just $100 and can be purchased at coveyfilmfestival.com. We look forward to seeing you on October 13 – 29! Lisa Billups, Executive Director

TOWNIE Quick Q + A with Jane Fonda TCRC Founder + Covey Honorary Chair Oscar Winning actress, Star of Netflix series Grace + Frankie

What is your Thomasville connection and how did you get involved in what became the Covey Film Festival and the Thomasville Community Resource Center? I was married to Ted Turner

and we visited Bill Flowers in Thomasville to go quail hunting. I became good friends with his daughters Daphne and Tali Flowers. I had been looking for the right place to create a community Center that focused on children and teens and, with input from Daphne and others, decided that Thomasville was the place. The need was and is great and there are good people in the community who would support such an effort. That is how the Thomasville Community Resource Center began.

What draws you to Thomasville and the Red Hills region? Are there any restaurants, shops or local products here that you love? Well, the

roses, the small town rhythms, the people. I did a lot of shopping for antiques there.

What do you enjoy most about your life at the moment? Going to bed! We often work 15-16

hour days on Grace & Frankie and I’m 78 years old. I crave my sleep. We’re on our 11th episode of season three. Two and a half more episodes to go. Thank heaven we laugh a lot on the set.

What one piece of advice would you give students— filmmakers and actors alike— who aspire to head to Hollywood? Be sure it’s your

passion because it’s a hard, very competitive world out here and most people don’t make it. Get a good education first and know as much about the world as you can. That will provide perspective, context and inspiration.

You’re a champion of many causes and nonprofits. Why is the mission of Thomasville Community Resource Center and the services it provides to underprivileged children and families important to you? It’s an attempt to

level the playing field. Middle class families are able to provide their children with after school activities, tutoring, computer skills, art and drama. Disenfranchised children need these things as well. That’s what TCRC does.

Why did/do you think that a film festival in a town like Thomasville would/continues to be a good fit for raising funds to benefit a children’s resource center? The Covey Film Festival was

the brainchild of Sharon Maxwell Ferguson who was on the TCRC board for a number of years and then became chair. With her background in social work, she brought the needed organizational skills to the Job. I’m not sure where she got the idea for the festival but clearly it was inspired.*

*Note: The brainstorm for The Covey Film Festival came from Doby Flowers and Didi Hoffman, as well as myself, during coffee one morning at Grassroots. We were trying to identify a signature fundraising event that was not currently being done in Thomasville. We all felt that considering Jane Fonda was a founder of TCRC, it was a natural fit to start a film festival. Jane remains an active presence in the festival, frequently recommending films to us from the festivals she attends; she is also an honorary chair. – Sharon Maxwell Ferguson is President of the TCRC Board of Directors and chairs its Covey Film Festival Committee.
