Austin, Texas The Shinyribs’ lead singer and songwriter, Kevin Russell, hit fame and followers when he was the lead singer and cofounder of The Gourds. Their 1998 cover of Snoop Dogg’s “Gin and Juice” led to a successful career for two decades that ended in 2013. The Shinyribs started out as a “side project” for Russell, but now the group plays for sold out shows across the southeast. Russell blends his southern musical heritage – his performances are colorful, country and soul with a little swamp-funk tossed in for good measure. Knoxville, Tennessee

The Black Lillies are a Grand Ole Opry favorite, and their latest album, Hard to Please, was called “a funky barn burner shot through with blasts of brass and blues guitar” by Rolling Stone Country. This past March, the group was tapped to play at Willie Nelson’s Luck Reunion on Nelson’s ranch in Luck, Texas. The group excels at blending genres – think country, blues, rock, blue grass, jazz and soul.

Athens, Georgia The Drive-By Truckers have commanded the stage since 1996, with legendary vocalists, songwriters and guitarists Patterson Hood and Mike Cooley leading the charge. Often compared to Lynyrd Skynyrd, Neil Young and other powerhouse southern rockers, the Drive-By Truckers sing about the south and the duality it entails – both pride and shame. Their tour schedule is constant, and Due South is excited to add the Red Hills Region to their list! Athens, Georgia

The Futurebirds have opened for the Truckers before, along with other heavy hitters under their belt like Widespread Panic and Grace Potter. Though he was born in Philadelphia and raised in Thomaston, Georgia, for the past ten years, self-taught artist and photographer Cedric Smith has called Savannah home. Whether in the pages of Savannah magazine, where he has shot a number of editorial features, or on the walls of iconic eateries like Back in the Day Bakery, his work has made an indelible mark on Savannah—and beyond. This spring, Cedric brings his newest work to Studio 209’s warehouse space. Inspired by imagery of Southern Americana, his latest collection, Soul to Soil, focuses on his experiences with the southern farmer. Cedric works with a honed discipline on multimedia compositions, seamlessly morphing photographic images into richly textured pieces, while applying and removing layers and lettering. Cedric’s work has been shown in the New-York Historical Society Museum, Atlanta Coca-Cola Company headquarters, the Tubman Museum in Macon, the Washington, D.C. Arts Commission and elsewhere; it has been featured in the New Yorker, New York magazine, Art Business News, the Chicago Reader and more. We were thrilled to have Cedric as a featured photographer in last Spring’s THOM. Meet him and check out his work at Studio 209 on April 23rd! Soul to Soil will run April 23 - June 10. with shinyribs' KEVIN RUSSELL How was the South by Southwest (SXSW) festival in Austin? It’s a pretty fun thing to do every year and we had a good time. We had about one show every day and I’d pick up weird, little solo shows too. They have an education conference, tech conference, then the film festival, and then the music conference. It’s all centered around that. So it’s about two or three weeks. People from all over world are there. It’s cool. What do you feel is the most important aspect to being a musician, as someone who has been one for so long? Well, partially it’s living one’s dream, you know? To me, personally, that’s the most important thing about it. It’s something I’ve dreampt of doing since a boy and I’m doing it. I’ve done it my whole life and it’s been great. It truly is, as cheesy as it sounds. I’m living the dream. I feel like what really makes a difference for me is when I find out about like parents sharing my music with their children and their children loving the music. Or they’ll send me a picture or a video of a little kid singing

my songs or dancing to one of my songs. That kind of stuff is invaluable. I try to express myself with some humility if I can but when you hear about when your music does do good for someone it’s a nice thing to know. It’s neat to know you made a difference in somebody’s life. If you could sit down and have coffee with any person, living or dead, real or fictional, who would it be and why? Pablo Neruda is a guy I’d like to talk to. He was a poet in South America; Chile is where I think he was from. Always been one of my favorite writers, thinkers. He had a book called The Book of Questions and it was just a book that was one of my favorite books. I wanna have him answer all those questions. Do you consider yourself a musical activist? Absolutely, yeah. That’s one thing I did at the conference (SXSW), I was on a panel on advocacy and creators' rights. I’m a governor on the Texas Chapter of the Grammy organization and one of the committees I’m on is the advocacy committee, working on promoting our efforts to get legislation passed in Washington D.C. There are various things that affect creators in our field, so yeah, I’m very much an advocate of reform in that world. The price of digital needs to go up. I mean it's so terribly cheap but none of us are making any money and that needs to be reformed. So really, everyone is mostly living on live performance now and the competition has grown fierce in the live performance world. So much so that, used to, I can’t remember this at the time, but we’re booking, most people are booking six, nine months ahead because there’s so much competition for it now. It’s really changed the landscape of things. I think we need serious reform to maybe correct some of that. How do you feel about YouTube? That’s really the biggest problem, I think. YouTube is built on music, you know? It’s built on music and they didn't pay anything for that. They make so much money on advertising, on YouTube, it’s ridiculous how much they make off of free content. It’s bullsh*t [laughs]. What would you like Thomasville to know about Shinyribs? One thing I want people to know about Shinyribs is what’s going on. When a lot of people have never seen us before on stage is basically I just sort of become a different person up there. I want people to know that to be uninhibited, to just let it all hang out, is really just of a matter of just dancing and expressing joy and to let yourself enjoy and go with whatever you feel during the show, you know? That’s what I hope people get from that show and the fact that we all have ways of holding ourselves back from being truly who we are, especially in public. A lot of people are inhibited and usually in a lot of good ways… but don’t be afraid to let loose and have some fun. Dance if you wanna or sing along if want to, you know? - Catharine Fennell
