Letter from Our Presenting Sponsor

“Thomasville National Bank is thrilled to partner with the Center for the Arts for yet another year of Due South. This event has quickly become a favorite in our community, giving us a welcomed opportunity to bring out lawn chairs, enjoy warmer temperatures and have some fun among friends, local chefs, musicians and artists. It is incredible how dynamic our downtown area has become and the entire community has come together to make this growth happen. TNB and The Center for the Arts continue to strive to make Thomasville truly the best place to call home and we are proud to help showcase Thomasville’s talent for a good cause. Our TNB family is looking forward to another great Due South event - we hope to see you there!” -Bert Hodges, Thomasville National Bank

Letter from Our due south co-chairs

“The best part about Due South is exposing our area to a variety of top-notch, live musical acts that otherwise may not come through Thomasville. A close second is that both of our kids love it so much! Land, family and tradition are what makes the South great and Due South combines the very best of these three things. The land produces the seasonal dishes local chefs serve up, families are brought together in an awesome outdoor setting, and the art and southern music set such a vibrant scene, creating a new springtime tradition for our community. We love that people come out, bring a chair, grab a beer and kick back! This event wouldn’t be possible without our amazing sponsors. We want to thank Michele Arwood and the TCA staff for having the faith that we could pull this off, the committee members for working so hard and Lizzie Jones, without whom none of this would be as easy as it is. We are humbled and thankful for the community support and growth of Due South over the last three years… we can’t wait to see where it goes in the next three!” -Haile McCollum and David Middleton, Due South Co-Chairs

Due South celebrates what southerners love most: craveworthy bites, cold drinks with an unexpected twist, lawn chairs planted in front of an electric stage, and talent — so much talent! — under the spring Thomasville sky. The event weaves together the sights, sounds, and tastes of the New South, while nodding to what brought us here in the first place: a connection between land, family, and tradition.

SAVE THE DATE OCTOBER 8-16, 2015 Gala to be held on October 15, 2015 benefiting the Thomasville Community Resource Center

BAND OF HEATHENS Austin, Texas The Band of Heathens is known for being one of its hometown’s most vital musical resources. The group has racked up accolades including “New Emerging Artists” and “Best Duo/Group of the Year” nominations by the Americana Music Honors & Awards and the Americana Music Association. Recently, BOH collaborated with Kid Rock on his latest album, First Kiss, which dropped at the end of February. Their fourth studio album Sunday Morning Record was released last summer and since then, the group has been on a non-stop tour across the country…and it will be their first time in Thomasville!

EVAN BARBER & THE DEAD GAMBLERS Albany, Georgia

THE GATORBONE BAND St. Augustine, Florida

Evan Barber left his day job in 2007 and has been a full time musician ever since. He started out performing acoustic shows and collected band members along the way; today they tour all throughout the southeast and their third studio album Bronze dropped last fall. Their original music is reminiscent of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Drive by Truckers and Jason Isbell.

The Gatorbone Band features the husband and wife musical team of Lis and Lon Williamson. The band’s repertoire includes renditions of artists such as Gillian Welch, Gram Parsons, Bill Monroe and more. Their original tunes reflect the same depth and artistry as the songwriters they cover, including elements from contemporary folk, Appalachian, old-time, bluegrass, country, swing, and jazz.

GRANT PEEPLES AND THE PEEPLES REPUBLIK

THE FRIED TURKEYS Tallahassee, Florida

Tallahassee, Florida

Grant Peeples is known for his axe-sharp socio-political tunes, as well as his raucous humor and heart-gigging ballads. He is a self-described “vegetarian that watches NASCAR, a treehugger with a gun below the seat.” He is a guitar playing, singer and songwriter; his latest album Punishing the Myth features Sarah Mac on vocals and dropped this past spring.

ROYCE LOVETT

This is the Turkeys third year playing their folk-rock, oldhippie country tunes at the Due South! The group started as a neighborhood band and has grown into a regional favorite. Expect to hear original numbers from their latest album, Uhaul Girl.

Tallahassee, Florida

Lovett has graced the pages of THOM magazine and has toured in France, South America, the west coast and back east – but Tallahassee will always be his home! He coined his style of music as “Cerebral Soul” which is mash up of soul, alternative hip-hop, reggae and R&B. Be prepared to swoon - he will be performing a solo, acoustic set for his Due South debut.

GRASSLAND STRING BAND

Athens, Georgia

This dynamic group was chosen by the Due South committee to open for the Band of Heathens. They have coined their music “Amerigrass” – a soulful mix of americana, bluegrass, folk, jazz, pop, love, spirit, and gumbo! Their music crosses generations and genres as it combines strings, drums, and original music. Their debut album Before the Feast was released August and the group has been on the road since. TRADITION. KNOWLEDGE. VISION.

We’re always torn about where to start our day… at Nanee’s Donut Hole or Grassroots Coffee. So we frequently opt for both. Nanee’s sugar glaze is brought down from heaven and Grassroots’ Shotgun Blend is a coffee they created just for us (no, really!) …it’s the fuel of editors. In the last year we’ve welcomed many new downtown shopping spots… there’s an Onward Reserve now inside of Hick’s on Broad… Stop by Cobalt, Homme Haberdashery, and say hello to Cadence at Fuzzy Goat. Sweet Grass Dairy Cheese Shop has moved its location to further down Broad. Their new space is fantastic, and they now have a full liquor bar… and fried cheese curds with an Asher Blue dipping sauce that are just… (there’s no word for this kind of scrumptious)! Thomasville has a great Historical Society… Go see them on Dawson Street. They’ll be giving tours of the History Museum and LaphamPatterson House, a beloved Townie treasure. It’s Rose Show weekend! They’ve got a 10K Rose Run and a 1-miler for the kiddos in the morning. Stroll downtown and don’t mind all those folks sitting out with palettes and easels… it’s the Piney Woods Plein Air Paint Off! If you’re in the mood for a steak and a martini, hit Chop House on the Bricks. Chef Matt Hagel is always serving up creative culinary delights using local farm-fresh ingredients. Speaking of creative, if you want a cocktail, you’ve got to go see Scott and Rhonda at Liam’s. They travel the world to bring us the most divine victuals in town. This is the place to try something you don’t normally care for… they’ll serve it up so you fall in love forever.

MEET THE ARTISTS-IN-RESIDENCE at TCA studio 209

emily arwood, painter-in-residence

robert copper, painter/sculptor-in-residence

Born and Raised: Thomasville, Georgia! What do you love? I’m primarily a painter, and I work in both oils and acrylics. Craft Facts: I’m a self taught artist, and I’ve been working on my craft for as long as I can remember! In recent years, my focus has shifted to portraiture in nontraditional colors. Artist Inspiration: Lately I’ve been drawing inspiration from the work of Jen Mann, a Canadian artist who works in oils. Her work has such vibrancy and life to it. Dreaming Big at Studio 209: I’m looking forward to interacting with the community and my fellow artists- in-residence!

Born and Raised: Denver, Colorado What do you love? I am a commercial artist---I love painting and sculpting. Craft Facts: I have thirty years of scenic painting and set design for both the FSU Opera and Monticello Opera House. I have painted backdrops for artists ranging from Destiny’s Child to Jay Z. I also am passionate about sculptures – I have created multiple bronzed presidential sculptures that are on FSU’s campus. Artist Inspiration: As a child, da Vinci, Michelangelo, John Singer Sargant, Frank Frazetta. These days I’m into Big Daddy Roth. Dreaming Big at Studio 209: I’m excited to tap into personal inspirations and find a market for my artwork in retirement.

abby barber, chef-in-residence Born and Raised: Albany, Georgia What do you love? I love the art of growing, preparing and sharing food! Craft Facts: I graduated with a degree in agriculture from Abraham Baldwin Agriculture College in Tifton, GA. I spent several years traveling and working on farms and community food projects, soaking up knowledge on urban agriculture and smallscale sustainable farming. Artist Inspiration: Anyone in the Good Food Movement - Sir Albert Howard, Rudolf Steiner, Wendell Berry, Carlo Petrini, Michael Pollan and Alice Waters. Dreaming Big at Studio 209: I’m looking forward to growing good food and collaborating with others at 209. I can’t wait to share our talents and passions with each other and the community!

denise d. boineau, painter-in-residence Born: Washington, DC Raised: Durham, North Carolina… I’m a city girl born and a country girl bred! What do you love? I love to paint oils and acrylics on both canvas and paper. My art is a reflection of a life in motion – I like to slow down and capture a moment in time whether it is a horse galloping or a model behind the scenes frantically getting ready for her moment. Craft Facts: Worked in New York’s fashion industry with stints at Seventeen magazine, Calvin Klein and Macy’s as a fashion director. Many of my ideas are a reflection of that time period. My Calvin Klein experience has inspired me to strip the color in some of my paintings in order to focus the eye on the movement and I love discovering a new designer or trend with which I can develop a series. Artist Inspiration: Toulouse-Lautrec, Matisse, Alice Neel Dreaming Big at Studio 209: I’m excited to meet other artists and find an audience for my work. 1482 E. Jackson Street Thomasville, Georgia (229) 236-5500 Find us on Facebook!

caprice kelly, potter/photographer-in-residence Born and Raised: Cairo, Georgia What do you love? I love many art mediums (including furniture design and photography) but I will be focusing on ceramics at Studio 209. I want to create cohesive pieces of art that express a higher level of skill than what I came into this residency with. Craft Facts: I am a recent Bachelor in Fine Art graduate from Valdosta State University. In college, I specialized in sculpture and furniture design. Artist Inspiration: Nature and simplicity. I often find that classics are made from simple decoration and clean forms. Dreaming Big at Studio 209: I am looking forward to being surrounded by other artists and learning from all of them.

jay snodgrass, poet/printmaker-in-residence Born: Boca Raton, FL Raised: Tokyo, Japan What do you love? I am primarily a poet, but I draw and paint and make lines. Craft Facts: I have an MFA from Florida International University in Poetry. As a poet I fell in love with making books. I combine photography with drawings and poetry to make books. I like to make books by hand, stitching the folios together. I also work in letterpress. Artist Inspiration: Keith Haring, Denise Bookwalter, Ed Ruscha, Moebius, Paul Celan and Gertrude Stein. Dreaming Big at Studio 209: I’m looking forward to making some exquisite books.

with Band of Heathens' Ed Jurdi Ed, being from Austin, we bet you know a thing or two about towns with loads of Southern charm. We Townies think Thomasville is the tops, in that regard, but we’re willing to cede that Austin is pretty great. What’s your favorite thing about Austin? Austin is a very specific vibe and a state of mind. It’s very progressive and forward thinking, yet laid back at the same time. It’s a unique place in a world where that is oftentimes lacking. You guys started out as “The Good Time Supper Club.” If there’s one thing we know about here in Thomasville, it’s good eats. What’s your favorite dish to bring (or eat) at a Supper Club? I really love to cook, it’s my other favorite thing to do, besides play music. I’m not sure that I have a go to dish, but I do like to experiment with all sorts of things, from Middle-Eastern Cuisine to exotic salads to Vegetable soups and stews, it really depends on the occasion and the time of year. You, Gordy Quist, and Colin Brooks, all singer/songwriters, started out by playing a recurring series at Momo’s, an Austin club. What sort of venues do you prefer to play? And how have your preferences changed as you’ve evolved from that Wednesday night series on your home turf to playing larger venues all over the world? I like playing all sorts of venues. In the end it’s the audience that really makes the night special. In general I think we really enjoy an environment in which the audience is in a good position to listen and really absorb the music. We pride ourselves on having a lot of dynamics and nuances in our live performance. So anytime the listening environment allows us to get to people’s ears, I think we’re in for a great night! Tell us about your theory on sharing the Band’s music... and where we can download some to prep for Due South! Our music is available at all of the regular outlets online, from Spotify to Itunes and Pandora. We also record all of our shows and archive them online at www.bandofheathens.com We usually try to have a free show available for streaming or download, so that would be a good place to go. When you’re not playing, what’s your favorite way to spend down time? Cooking, hanging out at home with my family and friends. I also love just sitting around the house and playing music and singing songs with my daughter. I really get true joy from doing that. We are big on shopping local here in the ‘Ville, and we love to seek out other local favorites when traveling. What are some of your favorite haunts in Austin? Waterloo Records, Buffalo Exchange, Stag, St. Vincent de Paul, Once Over Coffee, Polvos. As you’ve traveled, we’re sure you’ve visited some places that you weren’t quite ready to leave. In fact, we hope Thomasville makes that list soon! Where have you been that we should add to our bucket lists? San Francisco, Denver, Amsterdam, Copenhagen, Jackson Hole, WY, Marfa, TX, too many places to list! Thanks so much for your time, Ed! We really cannot wait to have you guys in town. We hope you all enjoy it as much as we will! - Natalie K.

216 S. BROAD STREET • 236-2160

with nan myers of firefly & shotgun supper club

Your roots run deep! Give us the rundown. I am a 6th generation T’villian (those are some deep roots, no wonder I am still here!0, wife to Greg (aka Nan’s Husband), mom of two challenging dear hearts of the male variety: a tween and a teen (Lord, help me), owner of Firefly and Nan Myers Events, and co-founder of Shotgun Supper Club. I tend to run around like a chicken with my head cut off, but I would not have it any other way! What will you be up to on Due South weekend? On Friday, April 20th, I am very excited to have Carrie Morey of Callie’s Charleston Biscuits signing her cookbook and sampling a new product: Cocoa and Creme Cookies! YUM! She is driving her biscuit mobile and whole family down for Due South and will be serving up treats in the Sponsor’s Lounge. She’ll be at the store from 1:30 p.m. - 3:30 p.m. On Saturday, I will be back and forth between the Fly and Due South providing some southern appetizers for the Sponsor Party by another Southern food purveyor called Doux (Due, get it?) South! A clever boy from New Orleans: Nick Melvin. We will be sampling drunken tomatoes and Little Rock Caviar and yes, of course we sell it at Firefly. Then, I hope to sit down and enjoy the music, my friends, and my family. Due South along with the Thomasville Antique Show are hands down my favorite weekends in “T-VEGAS.” We love everything in Firefly, from the plush bunnies for wee ones, to the handpainted cards and Georgia-shaped cutting boards (!!)… What are your favorite things now, and what should people look for if they pop in? Currently at the Fly, I am enjoying the DIY terrariums for kiddos and adults. They have even inspired some workshops that will continue throughout the summer. I am also enjoying the bountiful cookbooks that we sell. The store is reflective of casual entertaining, with a ridiculous amount of barware and glassware right now. I’ve gone a little overboard here with our exclusive Thomasville, GA. EST 1831 shotgun shell double-oldfashioned, to etched pineapple everything to three colors of ball jar glasses, and of course, our pinecone glasses. Clearly, a “Cheers” is in order! Tell us about your most recent Shotgun Supper Club, especially about what was on the menu (we heard the food was to die for!). Shotgun Supper Club started shortly after a visit to Athens, Georgia, where I attended a Supper Club put on by Mimi Maumus of Home Made Catering. I came back to the ‘Ville, where I went on and on about it to my friend Carol Whitney. We decided to stop salivating and just do it in our own backyard. The last supper took place in late February with the wickedly divine Peter Dale, of The National in Athens, Georgia. The Downtown supper location was in a pop-up art gallery called Driptorch that was curated by our artist and friend, John Gleason; art on the walls and artistry on the plate made it a winnerwinner “Shotgun” dinner in my book. Native Wes Kent, who now works under Dale, was in charge of the roulade of quail breast, crispy confit legs, and wheat berries with cauliflower, herb sauce, kumquats and smoked chili. To be on our Supper Club mailing list go to www.fireflyhome.com or come into the shop and sign up. What’s are your favorite things about living and working in Thomasville? I like the character and the characters (myself included) that live here. I like living a stone’s throw from Downtown and hope everyone truly gets how important our downtown businesses are and continues to support them. I also truly love my customers who have become my friends. I get to watch babies being born and children grow. I get to celebrate daily and seasonally and am honored to wrap the love into a present with beautiful paper, raffia, ribbon and a tin bug pin that represents my 19 years of sharing that love through my store, Firefly, as I enjoy this wonderful Thomasville life.
