Clean Up: The Drama in Your Life I’m not mad at you, I’m mad at the dirt! This year I made a new year’s resolution. I resolved to get rid of the drama in my life, and make new friends. Easy enough, you say? Well sister, it is...
out and… the needs of your skin change! One of my favorite drug store products is Neutrogena Healthy Skin Anti-Wrinkle Cream with SPF 15. It contains Retinal and other vitamins and I use it as a daily moisturizer. My favorite cleansers tend to be boutique products, and I’ve used brands from Merle Norman to Murad. Susan at Aesthetic Plastic Surgery Center invited me over for a facial and consultation and it was a great experience. Not only did she quickly and correctly identify my needs, she gave me lots of samples to try. They are very patientfocused, and you can read more about my experience at www.thomasvilletownie.com.
“No matter how plain a woman may be, if truth and honesty are written across her face, she will be beautiful.” —Eleanor Roosevelt
Voice in my head: “Oh please. Stop already with the dramatics. How hard can it be? I am not a drama queen!” Well, let me begin by saying this: we live in a very, very small town. Your business is my business, his business and their business. You can’t sneeze without soooomebody knowing it. But, I have finally figured out that you CAN get off that gossip train. You’ve just got to stop digging in the dirt. That’s right. Stop for a moment and think about your recent conversations with friends. Are you guilty of spreading the news? Most of us ARE. It begins easy enough...a chit chat and a glass of bubbly. Next thing you know, you’ve got “the dirt” on your neighbors, your friends, and your frenemies. Whatcha gonna do with that dirt? You going to soil somebody’s name? Or are you going to wash that dirt off your hands and walk away with a clean conscience? Sometimes dirt is really hard to get rid of...but here’s how. First, you start valuing your time. Second, your start evaluating your friendships. Ask yourself, am I enjoying the time I spend with a certain person? Does that person make me feel good and enrich my life? Do I feel empty after my time with them, or do I feel full of love? Or do I just feel dirty? Modern social mediums are one way to find out who is doing what, where, when and with who. All nine hundred of your “close” friends online. Texting has become the communication technique that we use the most. So I began thinking, is my life so boring that I need to know what so-and-so is pissed off about this week? Do I need to text anything to anyone besides “I love you?” Absolutely not. So, here’s what I decided to do...I started cleaning house. Not the kind of domestic wizardry you are thinking of, but rather a soul cleansing purge. I am getting rid of the relationships that involve drama that make me feel bad about myself or are hurtful to others. I am getting rid of the empty feelings of hate that I have for certain people. I am just letting them go...like a balloon. You just aren’t meant to be friends with everyone, not matter how hard you try. And once you wash away the old, you will be surprised at how good the “new” feels. I have lived in this town for only four years, but I really thought that I knew everybody. Happily, last week I learned that there are lots and lots of great people I had not met...people that I am now calling “friend.” By just reaching out a little bit I have made new friends who have interesting lives, full of love and happiness. I welcome them in to my existing circle of kind, fun-loving and sincere friends that I do indeed cherish. I also have found that happy people attract one another. Are you attracting the people who you enjoy being with? If not, it’s time to cut the cord. You can do it in a nice way...start being reallllly busy with work. Or tell them you have taken up knitting. Get off of Facebook and get out and live. Pick up the phone, take up a new hobby or take a road trip. Chill that
different lines. I like to change things up every year or so, because new research comes
It’s always good to get a professional opinion about your skin, especially if you have freckles or moles. A dermatologist can save your life, so don't be shy about asking them to look. Better safe than sorry—and better early than late. Be good to your skin, you will have it for the rest of your life!
Road Trip red hills horse trials in tally I have been looking forward to this event all year! Even if you don’t ride, this event is a fantastic display of athleticism, both of the riders and the horses. The event is three days long, Friday, March 8th through Sunday, March 10th. I’ll be volunteering all weekend, so you may see me at the Welcome tent! Eventing allows riders of all ages and abilities to compete. It was developed from cavalry competitions during the early 1900’s and tests the rider’s and horse’s “partnership and athletic prowess over three days and three disciplines: the grace and harmony of dressage; the rigors and thrills of cross-country jumping over natural obstacles; and the power and pageantry of show jumping.” The dressage portion is the first day, and has been described at “horse ballet.” The second day is cross country and will include creatively constructed obstacles and dramatic jumps. Bring your walking shoes to follow riders on the course! Sunday is stadium jumping, and you may have seen this on TV. Each day, there will also be a kids’ fun area with wildlife demos and pony rides {of course!}, Saddler’s Row with vendors, food court, demos + exhibits, and, on Sunday, a guided botanical tour and lecture at 9:30.
red hills horse trials is a non-profit and exists to: • To benefit two worthwhile charities promoting ecological study, protection of environment, and use of green space • To promote interest in the sport of Eventing • To entertain family, friends, and business associates Tickets are: $15.00 suggested donation/adult/day, $25.00 suggested donation for three-day pass. Children under 12 accompanied by an adult are free. For tickets or more info, see www.rhht.org.

Add weights to your routine. Many women skip the weights because they believe they will “bulk up” and this is not true. Think of it this way- muscle tissue is more metabolically active than fat tissue. The more muscle you have, the more calories you will burn throughout the day! Increasing your muscle mass revs up your metabolism.
Favorite intangible about The Ville? Thomasville is worldly but not wary—Everyone is welcome!
LAMP SHADES For quick, monthly cleaning, dust shades with a soft brush or microfiber cloth. For washable shades, fill the bathtub with lukewarm water and add small amount of liquid laundry soap. Dip shade, wiping from top to bottom with a clean rag. Rinse shade in clean, lukewarm water; blot with a towel. Drip dry or place shade in front of a fan.
What are you reading right now? I just finished The Great American House by Gil Schafer and am starting Butterfly in the Typewriter: The Tragic Life of John Kennedy Toole and the Remarkable Story of A Confederacy of Dunces by Cory MacLauchlin.
Think quality, not quantity. Maximize your time and intensity level by introducing intervals to your workout. Research proves that a 30 minute interval training session burns more fat and calories than a 30 minute endurance session. In addition, you can do it anywhere- home, gym, and the outdoors. Add in body-weight exercises- pushups, mountain climbers, lunges- for a combined cardio and strength training effect.
Ice cream or cake? And what kind? I am a chocolate cake kind of girl (with coffee ice cream on the side) The ultimate vacation? I would rent a house in London as a home base and make lots of side trips to Bath, Edinburgh, Paris, Florence, etc. Family and dear friends are invited, of course!
WASHING MACHINES Did you know that residue from laundry detergents and fabric softeners can cling to the inside of your washer? Baking Soda Scrub Add 4 tablespoons baking soda to 4 cups warm water. Wipe down the inside surface of the washing machine, scrubbing lightly if needed. Run the washer through a rinse cycle - if you see a powdery, white residue on the surface, rinse again. Vinegar Rinse Add 1/4 cup white distilled vinegar to 1 quart water. Wipe down the interior of the washer, scrubbing lightly if needed. Run the washer through a rinse cycle.
Try a Group Fitness class- exercise doesn’t have to be lonely and boring. Attending a class is fun! Plus, it gives you accountability and community! Lacking motivation? Let a certified instructor give you the motivation you need to finish the workout!
If I could teach my children one character trait, it would be... I would like for our boys are learn perseverance {they already have kindness, thoughtfulness and humor down pat!}. ….And why only one “a” in Margret? I honestly don’t know exactly why I only have one ‘a.’ One theory is that the aunt for whom I was named removed her ‘a’ in a fit of post WWII glamour and it appealed to my parents. Another theory is that my parents wanted to give their middle daughter a little edge. (They sheepishly cannot remember!)
Re-evaluate your fitness goals. The New Year’s Resolution hype has died down, and it’s back to everyday life. What is working for you? What isn’t? If walking on the treadmill for an hour at 5:30 AM isn’t your thing, then switch to a 30 minute spin class after work. Choose obtainable goals and be realistic!

how to wash your dog... STEP 1—Gather supplies...shampoo, towels, swimming mask and knee pads. Arrange all supplies by tub while dog is not looking. STEP 2—Find dog. Best bets are under the bed, in the back of the pantry, behind the toilet or down the street running at a fast rate... STEP 3—Wrassle dog into tub. May involve superhuman strength and octopus-like arm maneuvers. Refrain from calling the dog names...the neighbors can hear you. STEP 4—Set water temperature using teeth. (Hands are in death grip on dog’s body.) Feel sorry for dog tip toeing in cold water. STEP 5—Wet dog with water using large plastic cup or a bucket. Either is a futile effort that you will regret. Consider calling plumber for hand held fixture installation, this week!
STEP 6—Apply shampoo by mistakenly squirting huge blobs of it on to dog with one hand. Careful, dog may shimmy out of way, allowing shampoo to run down the drain. STEP 7—Lather dog with breakneck speed before he escapes.Quickly alternate scrubbing with death grip hands. Stop only to wring out your shirt from dog shaking soapy water all over you and the entire bathroom. Threaten dog with his life for moving a muscle. STEP 8—Rinse dog with cup after cup of water, making sure to rinse off his head. Prepare for violent head shaking and soaking of walls. STEP 9—Unfurl towel and cover dog’s head and body, and begin to gently dry off entire dog. Praise him, apologize profusely and give him a smooch on the nose. Offer him a treat—and MEAN IT. STEP 10—Cuddle dog in a second dry towel...the one you put in the dryer for him earlier. He’ll forgive you quicker. —Leslie
