LIFESTYLE CHANGES FOR If losing weight is not the top New Year’s resolution for Americans, it is certainly one of the top three. While many people lose weight on a diet only to regain it, there are ways people can lose weight and keep it off.

The key is to set realistic goals and incrementally change one’s lifestyle. As with all lifestyle changes, the individual must want to make that change for himself/herself. Too often people attempt to lose weight for the wrong reason, such as pleasing their spouse. Under those circumstances, people usually lose weight initially but then regain it.

Setting a goal to lose weight gradually (1 to 2 pounds per week) lends to people being successful at keeping weight off.

Once a person decides that they want or need to lose weight solely for themselves, they should follow a program that slowly reduces weight.

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, “evidence shows that people who lose weight gradually (about 1 to 2 pounds per week) are more successful at keeping weight off.”

Bonnie Green, a physician who worked in Florida for more than 17 years and has owned and operated The Weight Place in Brevard for the past four years, said that many of her patients had illnesses related to being overweight. By just losing weight, many of her patients resolved their illnesses.

Green said people should set realistic goals, such as losing 3 to 5 pounds a month. People, however, need to establish a deadline for their weight loss. Meeting a deadline is easier if that date is one’s birthday or some other special day. Once that goal has been met, then another weight loss goal can be established.

Green warns against setting too many goals at once, such as eating less and exercising more. While exercise is important, she said 85 percent of weight loss comes from adjusting one’s diet.

“Exercise is just a bonus,” she said.

At certain times, success also can be just maintaining one’s weight. Studies have shown that Americans often gain up to 7 pounds between Halloween and New Year’s. If people do not gain any weight during the holiday season, that can be considered a success.

So what diet is the best for losing weight?

That often depends on whom you ask and when you ask it. The latest consensus

Once people have reached their desired weight and wish to maintain it, then they can add natural fruits that contain sugars.

Green also said people should eat things they enjoy and avoid items they do not. “If you don’t like eggs, don’t eat eggs,� she said.

In order to find healthy and tasty foods, people have to be willing to try new foods and recipes. There are some new low-carb foods, such as cauliflower rice, that are relative new to the market.

While the low-carb diet contains more fat than some other diets, Green said she has only had two patients since 2008 whose cholesterol has increased while on the plan. Many of her patients have been quite successful. One person lost 200 pounds over two years and has kept the weight off. And when people lose weight, they are less likely to need medications for high blood pressure, diabetes and acid reflux. Green encourages her clients to eat few carbohydrates. She said recent research from the AMA and British Medical Journal suggest that overweight people should reduce their carbohydrates and replace them with fats, which increases one’s metabolism and makes one feel full after eating. Those foods include meat, cheese, peanut butter, cream cheese, guacamole, chicken, almonds, cashews, hardboiled and deviled eggs, etc.

Green said weight loss is about controlling one’s insulin. Carbohydrates do not satiate people and excessive carbohydrates cause a flood of insulin. As insulin floods the body, hunger increases and weight increases. Since most of Green’s patients are overweight, they don’t need carbohydrates. “They are the carb,� she said.

processed sugars, as well as items such as pasta, rice, potatoes, sodas, sweet teas and fruit juices. She recommends that overweight people eat 25-45 grams of carbohydrates a day and 25 grams of

She said people should set reasonable goals and achieve them.

If they do not achieve that ultimate goal, whatever it is, then they are more likely to relapse.

“It’s like a marathon,” said Green. “If you don’t cross the finish line, you really haven’t won.”

That does not mean, however, that patients will not have relapses or eat poorly at times. They often do. When people make a dietary mistake, they should just recommit themselves to their diet.

They also need to realize that even a small improvement, such as losing 10 pounds, can have a positive impact on their health, including lowering their blood pressure and blood sugar.

S T RA TEG I ES TO CONT ROL APPE T IT E Hunger can be a formidable foe, especially for people attempting to lose weight. When hunger strikes, various appetite-control strategies can help people avoid overeating or eating during those times when boredom is more to blame than an empty belly.

• Eat slowly. When a person eats, a series of signals are sent to the brain from digestive hormones secreted by the gastrointestinal tract. These signals produce a feeling of pleasure and satiety in the brain, but it can take awhile for the brain to receive them. By chewing slowly, people can give the signals more time to reach their brains, potentially preventing them from overeating.

• Reach for fiber first. Another way to conquer hunger without overeating is to reach for fiber before eating other parts of your meal. Vegetables are rich in fiber, but since veggies are often served as side dishes, many people tend to eat them only after they’ve eaten their main courses. That can contribute to overeating. Fiber fills you up, so by eating the high-fiber portions of your meal first, you’re less likely to overeat before your brain receives the signals that your stomach is full. Consider eating vegetables as an appetizer or, if the entire meal is served at once, clear your plate of vegetables before diving into the main course or other side dishes.

• Drink water. Perhaps the best, and least expensive, way to control appetite and ensure you don’t overeat is to drink more water.

A 2010 study funded by the Institute for Public Health and Water Research that included 48 adults between the ages of 55 and 75 found that people who drank two eight-ounce glasses of water right before a meal consumed 75 to 90 fewer calories during the ensuing meal than study participants who did not consume water prior to their meals. Over the course of 12 weeks, participants who drank water before meals three times per day lost roughly 5 pounds more than those who did not increase their water intake.

Controlling appetite does not have to be a complex undertaking. In fact, some of the simplest strategies can be highly effective.

KEYS TO FITNESS IN 2019:

The first time a person enters a fitness facility can be intimidating. There are myriad machines, ranging from treadmills and stationary bikes to ellipticals and all sorts of weightlifting machines, as well as free weights, bars and mats. It’s hard to tell where to begin. The intimidation factor is only increased when a first-timer sees all the veterans, many slim and muscular, moving from one machine or exercise to another without a second thought.

“Too many are intimidated when they enter a gym,” said Jake Dalton, owner of Next Level Fitness in Rosman. His advice: “Remember, everyone had to get started sometime!”

Before selecting a fitness facility, visit several of them to see their proximity to your home and place of employment, the hours of operation, the cost for individuals and families, the amenities offered, the range of programs and equipment, the availability of staff, locker rooms and cleanliness. Some facilities, like the Brevard Health & Racquet Club, offer tennis and pickle ball courts and indoor and outdoor swimming pools, in addition to traditional exercise rooms. Other facilities offer 24-hour access to their exercise rooms. Some facilities may offer more or less than you might expect if you just drive by.

Once you’ve selected a facility, how do you begin?

According to Charity Smith of Workout Anytime Brevard, the first thing to do is to find a fitness facility employee and communicate to them your goals and previous workout experience. Be sure to mention any physical limitations. The staff member then can walk you through the gym and explain how to properly use each piece of equipment.

Both Dalton and Smith said beginners should start slowly to avoid injuries. Injuries can be difficult to overcome, both physically and mentally, and make it more difficult to achieve your goals.

Novices also should be comfortable with themselves and not compare themselves to others.

Many gyms have programs for beginners and staff will help establish initial weights and repetitions for clients. Staff members are glad to answer questions about certain machines or exercises. Most of the cardiovascular machines today provide information as to how far and fast you’re walking, how many calories you’ve burned, etc. Staff members often help set up initial workouts on those machines.

Many gyms, like WOA Brevard, offer small group classes that allow participants to encourage each other towards their goals.

If you desire more personal instruction and want someone to tailor a specific program for you and spend time with you individually, most gyms offer one-on-one trainers for an additional cost.

KEYS TO FITNESS As with the race between the tortoise and hare, the benefits accrue to those who work out consistently over a long period of time.

“This is not a sprint; it is a marathon,” said Dalton.

Those who expect quick results are more likely to quit than those who realize becoming fit takes time.

“Most people quit because they aren’t seeing any results or not seeing results quick enough,” said Smith.

Dalton added that too many beginners are focused on their weight.

“I tell people all the time to forget about the scale. We don’t have one in the gym for that very reason. It’s not about weight. You can be small, but if your muscle mass is low, then you are as unhealthy as a heavy person. It is all about body composition,” he said.

If you work out three days a week, it will take about 30 days before you see any results. Significant changes – one’s that are obvious to you – often do not occur until you’ve consistently worked out for 90 days.

While you need to consistently work out in order to see progress, you also need to change your exercise routine at least every 90 days because your body adapts to a training cycle.

“If you don’t change up your routine, then you will plateau, and that is when people start to get discouraged, and bail on their goals,” said Dalton.

“One thing that can keep people motivated is by mixing up the workout,” said Smith. “Don’t get into a rut where you come in and do the same thing every day. Change up your workout. When you do the same thing everyday your body gets ‘bored’ and quits making progress and your mind gets ‘bored’ also.”

You also should not focus on just one facet of exercise. Dalton said he sees too many women spend time just on the treadmills or some other aerobic machine.

“Cardio is only one piece of the puzzle,” he said. “You must do weight bearing training. This builds muscle to help you burn more calories at rest. It also strengthens your bones to help prevent bone loss as you age.

A woman is not going to pack on muscle like a man, but it is imperative for a woman to not limit herself nor her health by not doing load-bearing exercises.” (continued on pg. 14)

FITNESS KEYS Stretching and fluid movement also should be part of a fitness routine. Again, staff members provide advice and many fitness facilities provide Yoga, Zumba or other classes that combine aerobics with stretching and/or fluidity.

Even if you follow all of these steps, there is a good chance you will hit a stretch when you do not feel like working out.

There are two ways to minimize your chances of quitting. One is to exercise with a friend or co-worker. It’s harder to skip a workout if you have a constant cohort. The best way, however, is to have workouts become part of your routine. It’s just something you do without thinking about it, and if you don’t do it, you feel your day is incomplete.

While exercise of all kinds, from running to lifting weights, is important to improving your overall health, exercise is a distant second when it comes to losing weight.

“You can’t exercise yourself out of a bad diet,” said Smith.

“Diet is 80 percent of the effort, particularly if your goal is to tone up and lose weight. Staying healthy is a combination of strength building, as you will do in a gym, and proper diet.

You are what you eat. Diet must be a part of any plan to get healthy and stay healthy!”

And in order to lose weight and become more fit, the lifestyle changes you make should be gradual but permanent.

“It can’t be a fad. It can’t be for a limited time. It has to be permanent. Only then will you see the dramatic changes in your fitness, your appearance and your overall health,” said Dalton.

One of the goals for Transylvania County Parks & Recreation is to provide health and wellness opportunities for the public. We strive to accomplish this goal through staff directed and contracted programs.

Our athletic programs for the Pre-K age group are designed to develop fine motor, teamwork and basic sports skills. The two main athletic programs are Start Smart Basketball and Future Football Stars. In addition, we have two different summer camps for this age group that meet at the Recreation Center. These camps are themed and one week is typically a sports camp.

The youth sports we offer are designed to help fill in the gaps of what is not offered by the county’s youth athletic associations. Currently, we offer girls youth volleyball, youth basketball, flag football and SNAG Golf. In addition to these youth sports, we offer themed summer camps, such as dodge ball,

Senior programs that are offered throughout the year include pickleball, basketball and badminton. Senior Games takes place in the spring and typically draws more than 150 county residents, allowing them to participate in as many as 20 events.

During last year’s Halloweenfest in downtown Brevard, the variety of costumes and fun activities weren’t the only highlights.

Get Set Transylvania, a collaboration of more than 24 local organizations aimed at helping the area’s youngest children, was launched at the festival as the new name of the Transylvania County Early Childhood Initiative. On the same day, as well as the new name, Get Set Transylvania announced its partnership with Sesame Street in Communities, a nationwide undertaking that supports parents, caregivers and community providers in ways to give all children a strong and healthy start. The partnership announcement at Halloweenfest was celebrated by appearances of Sesame Street’s Count von Count and Abby Cadabby.

The partnership will allow Transylvania County to have access to Sesame Street videos, storybooks and training to help children deal with various challenges, along with providers receiving professional development resources on age-appropriate lessons on literacy, numeracy and other areas.

Since Halloweenfest, one of Get Set Transylvania’s focuses has been the creation of a dental health toolkit.

“Through the long-standing Healthy Smiles Program we will work with all the local daycare facilities to integrate the dental tool kits,” said Elaine Russell, Transylvania Public Health’s director. “We have established relationships for preventive dental education with these entities, so the tool kits will allow us to bring new and expanded resources to those working relationships.”

County Manager Jaime Laughter also backed the toolkit project.

“I think it would be an amazing asset for helping increase awareness about dental health for our preschoolers, the importance of dental care to overall health, and how parents and caregivers can be a daily influence by reminding children to brush their teeth to protect them from cavities,” she said. “The toolkit would also allow them to see what local resources there are available for dental care for children.”

Get Set Transylvania’s beginnings date back to 2015. In December of that year, Transylvania County commissioners heard the findings of a “State of the Young Child in Transylvania County” report that “shocked” officials and others. For example, as of October 2015, the report found, 17 of 35 infants enrolled in the Care Coordination for Children program in Transylvania County were receiving treatment for opiate withdrawal symptoms.

Other than substance abuse, other issues highlighted included challenges for some achieving health care access, the cost and availability of child care, high numbers of kindergartners tested who were below or far below proficiency for learning, and high rates of children who had “limited or uncertain access to adequate food.”

“Children under 5 years of age depend completely on family and community to provide the right start and ensure that developmental milestones are being met,” the report said. “Early environment has a lasting impact on the development and life of each child and is also a factor in that child’s future economic success. Making sure that children have the right environment to learn and develop is not only an ethically sound practice, but it is also critical to the community’s economic development.”

A top challenge facing those 0 to 5 years old is opioid addiction and its consequences.

“The opioid crisis that is facing America is in our back yard,” Farash said, noting that “record numbers” of children are being taken from homes by local authorities because of its impact.

“As general pediatricians in this town, we are managing childhood (drug) withdrawals,” she said.

Farash said many young people in the county face “lots of barriers” and that it’s important that officials and others associated with Get Set Transylvania “hear from parents.”

Among her hopes for the effort is greater access to pre-school slots.

“We have a lot of grandparents raising kids out there,” Farash said. “(Greater access) would definitely give positive energy to their homes.”

Giving children and parents options — through programs, for example, at the recreation department and library — and getting children away from video games are other measures she’d

One of the programs at Fyzikal is called Body Q, which is an assessment of a person’s strength and balance and which points clients in the right direction and can help them determine if they need therapy or training. There’s a balance component to the program, and it lets clients know if they are a high or moderate risk for falling. Burger said if a client is at a higher risk for falling and their balance is off, they will set the client up in a harness and work with their coordination by kicking a ball, or they can set them up on an unstable surface and work with strengthening their weaknesses. “It’s a pretty cool system we have in here,� he said. “A lot of the therapists develop visual exercises and start by telling clients how to do the exercises. They mostly do that with every patient.

Some people also benefit from massage therapy and other kinds of structural manipulation. Chanley Layton is a certified Rolfer and massage therapist who works in Brevard. While she spends her time physically releasing tension in the body, she said that sometimes her clients need someone to listen to them vent as much as they need the physical release.

“Some people come in more for the body and associated pain, and some people come in more for their mind,” she said.

PHYSICAL THERAPY AND MASSAGE DIAGNOSING THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN PT AND OT The body is a complex organism that is the sum of all its parts.

When a portion of the body is not working optimally, pain, lack of motion and a host of other concerns can arise. At some point in their lives, many people will visit therapists to restore functionality to a part of their body that was affected by injury.

Therapists come in various types, including physical therapists, or PTs, and occupational therapists, or OTs. Some may not understand what distinguishes a PT from an OT. Although physical therapy and occupational therapy are sometimes used interchangeably, they are actually two different, but similar, disciplines.

According to St. Catherine University, PT involves treating the actual impairment, while OT helps the patient complete necessary tasks with the impairment. To break this down even further, consider the following scenario: An athlete stumbles on the field, injuring his knee in the process. While the injury does not require surgery, it is severe enough for bracing and requires that the athlete not apply pressure through walking. He visits a PT to help determine which kinds of assistive devices might remedy the situation as well as which exercises and stretches can work the knee safely so that it remains limber while healing. The OT instructs the athlete on the proper way to use

crutches, canes or a wheelchair while the knee remains immobile.

The OT also can illustrate how to get in and out of the shower or walk up and down stairs with the adaptive devices.

While PT may be focused on treating the injury itself, OT is more likely to help the patient adapt to home and work environments to allow for a better quality of life and help the injured person maintain his or her independence. Some OTs will do on-site assessments and help with those modifications.

Despite their differences, PT and OT do overlap, and some therapists may work together to make sure there's a seamless integration of practices. Both PTs and OTs are involved in injury recovery or in assisting individuals with life-long disabilities enjoy the highest quality of life.

Both professions require meeting high education standards with knowledge of physical anatomy. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, some entry-level occupational and physical therapists hold master's degrees, but a vast majority of these positions require a doctoral degree in the respective field. However, the schooling required can be worth it, as both fields are expected to grow considerably in the coming decades.

Even though the open enrollment for health insurance through the Affordable Care Act (ACA) closed Dec. 15, there are still options for people looking to purchase health insurance.

People can apply for health insurance through the ACA if they have a “qualifying event.� Those events include changing jobs, moving from one state to another, moving back into the country, having a baby or anything else that caused a loss of insurance coverage.

Paul Folckomer, who has been an insurance agent for 28 years and has been in Brevard for 14 years with Broad River Insurance, said the first thing they do with clients is determine whether or not they qualify for subsidies from the federal government through the Affordable Care Act (ACA). If people are eligible, then they try to sign them up.

Applicants for ACA coverage do not have to answer any questions about their health and cannot be denied coverage for pre-existing conditions. The ACA covers people whose household income falls between 100 to 400 percent of the federal poverty level.

For 2019, for a family of four, that covers incomes ranging from $25,100 to $100,400.

If applicants fall within the subsidy guidelines, the insurance agents use an enrollment tool to see the cost of various plans.

Plan categories are bronze, silver, gold and platinum. The health insurance cost depends upon the type of plan, the number of people in the plan, their age, and household income. The federal government uses a Silver plan as the default guideline plan upon which subsidies and deductibles are determined.

For example, a father aged 42 with a wife aged 39 and two children ages 6 and 10 might have a household income of $60,000. With a Silver plan, the cost would be more than $2,000 a month. However, since the government figures that people with that income should pay no more than 8 percent of their income in health insurance, the government provides a subsidy $1,807 per month, leaving the family to pay about $400 a month.

Folckomer said people are not required to purchase that plan. They can choose a plan with lower premiums and higher deductibles and co-payments or a plan with higher premiums with lower deductibles and lower co-payments.

ACA plans are based on the concept that the less money you have, the more help you need. If one makes 400 percent of the federal poverty level, he would pay more than one who makes 250 percent of the federal poverty level. (There are seven brackets: 100 percent, 138 percent, 150 percent, 200 percent, 250 percent, 300 percent and 400 percent of the

Folckomer said 60 percent of his company’s customers who receive federal subsidies pay less than $100 a month for health insurance.

“You’ve helped a lot of people by doing that,” he said.

Since the subsidies, however, are based on one’s projected income, it is imperative to accurately determine that income to avoid penalties, and that is not easy to do.

“It gets more complicated and that’s why they need an agent,” said Folckomer, who added that his office does not charge its clients for health insurance, but is reimbursed by the company that provides the health insurance. In western North Carolina, Blue Cross Blue Shield is the only ACA provider.

One complicating factor is that the costs of the plans and the amount of subsidies are based on estimated income for the coming year. That can be tricky because a person who qualified for a substantial subsidy in 2018 might have a slight increase in income in 2019 that could put them into a higher income

bracket and cause their subsidy to decrease.

For example, if you belong to a family of four and your household income is $50,200, the percentage of income you’re expected to contribute to health insurance is 6.54 percent, or $3,803. But if you make one dollar more and have a household income of $50,201, then you are expected to pay 8.36 percent of your income or $4,196.

Deductibles also increase the more money one makes.

When out-of-pocket expenses are added in, the costs of not having a subsidy can be dramatic.

For example, Folckomer said if a family household income is $100,500, they would pay $1,674 per month with a deductible of more than $7,000 and receive no subsidy. Add the maximum out of pocket cost of $15,800 and the family could up spending 36 percent of their income on health care.

“They can’t afford to live off that if one of them is sick,” said Folckomer.

EYE CARE - RE-EXAMINED After the brain, your eyes are the second most complex organ in the body. For that reason, it is very important to proactively take care of them. You can accomplish this by getting a comprehensive medical eye exam each year. It is recommended that you begin this process around age 40.

Dr. Pooja Sethi, an ophthalmologist at Carolina Ophthalmology, PA, in Hendersonville, said annual eye exams are important to screen for a variety of conditions.

“There are many ophthalmic diseases that can be recognized even before the patient may have pervasive symptoms, and can prevent significant pain or discomfort to a patient,” she said. “For example, conditions such as dry eyes and allergic conjunctivitis are often present on an eye exam even in patients who are having zero to minimal symptoms, and it is prudent for them to be recognized and treated early to prevent patients from having uncomfortable symptoms. Patients can also start to develop nuclear sclerosis, or the early development of cataracts, in their fifth decade, and while oftentimes surgery is not indicated until years after development of cataracts, it is important for them to be followed closely. Both glaucoma and macular degeneration are eye conditions that often have very minimal or subtle changes to the patient that may not be recognized early.”

Though stepping out of the eye doctor’s office with dilated eyes can be annoying, Sethi said eyes need to be dilated at least once a year to catch any possible “sightthreatening” conditions.

“And, finally, many systemic diseases (diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol, to name a few) can show up first and foremost in the eye — perhaps even before your next physical,” she said.

WHAT’S NEW IN EYE CARE? “Ophthalmology is one of the most evolving and changing fields in medicine,” Sethi said. “A few decades ago, cataracts were removed in much more invasive ways, requiring an overnight stay in the hospital. Now, thanks to micro-incision surgery, patients are in and out of their procedures in a fraction of the time and rarely require sutures or stitches. Given that fluoride is naturally occurring, and given Transylvania County’s abundance of water sources, Cozart said well water from around the county contains differing levels of fluoride.

Cozart said he’s spent years testing water from wells in different areas of the county and found that water in Little River has the highest concentration of fluoride.

However, in terms of the public water supply, Brevard’s city water does not contain fluoride. Fluoride was first introduced into Brevard’s water supply in 1980, until city council voted to remove it in 2007.

The National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders says approximately 15 percent of American adults (37.5 million people) aged 18 and older report some trouble hearing. Age is the strongest contributor to hearing loss, with people age 60 and older with the highest levels of impairment.

People with hearing deficits can access a growing number of assistance devices to make their lives easier. From telephones and doorbells that trigger a blinking light rather than a bell to closed captioning and voice-to-text conversion to a greater understanding and widespread usage of sign language, the deaf and hearing impaired have many options to help them overcome hearing loss.

As technology advances, so, too, do the options for the hearing impaired. One innovative piece of gadgetry is sophisticated wireless hearing aids that are compatible with personal electronic devices.

Thanks to Bluetooth technology, hearing aid manufacturers are har-

nessing this science to expand the abilities of hearing aids and to develop new products. In the past, in order to use an MP3 player or mobile phone, a person would need to remove traditional hearing aids to accommodate a pair of earbuds. Furthermore, hearing aids may have had their limitations in filtering ambient noise.

Although Bluetooth-powered hearing devices are still in their infancy, Oticon, a global hearing technology company, has developed its own communication and entertainment solution called ConnectLine that enables people to connect hearing aids with different devices. This transforms hearing aids into a personal wireless headset for listening to music, watching television or video chatting.

Many other companies, such as ReSound and Starkey, also offer Bluetooth-enabled devices. Their devices may be compatible with Android and iPhone models, some of which may only require an app or direct connectivity to the device. In fact, Apple has patented a specific Bluetooth connectivity with certain hearing aid manufacturers. Others may require an accessory of some sort to make connections possible, especially when pairing with a TV or other audio device.

FOR GREAT PHSYICAL CONDITIONING Cycling is a great way to springboard any fitness goals for the New Year. Not only is it fun to ride a bike, but also it’s low impact, meaning riders can get some cardio without wear and tear on the knees and other joints.

You don’t need to spend thousands of dollars on a fancy bike to start riding, especially if you are just trying to get the blood moving and get into shape. A nicer bike makes riding more comfortable and fun, but it’s not necessary to get the heart working. Something that fits you, like that bike that’s been in the garage for 10 years, is fine. It might need a tune up and new tires, but that old bike will serve you well.

If you’re shopping for a bike, fit is important. A bike that doesn’t fit your frame can be uncomfortable and if you ride it for too long, you could injure yourself. A quick trip to a local bike shop can help you tune up your old bike or find a new one. Efficiency is the name of the game in cycling; the idea is to be able to propel yourself forward with as little effort as possible. The less effort, the longer and further you can go.

KINDS OF BIKES There are several kinds of bikes. Hybrid bikes are great all-around bikes that are typically used on bike paths and for commuting around town. Hybrids put the rider in an upright position giving the rider a more comfortable position on the bike.

Recumbent bikes are just that — bikes where the rider lays back in a seat with a backrest and steers with their hands by their hips. Recumbent bikes are generally ridden by people who have trouble with balancing a regular bike, or folks who may have an injury or condition that prevents them from riding an upright bike. Recumbent bikes are generally geared higher than regular bikes, making them significantly slower. Recumbent bikes are best left to multi-use paths and not ridden on the roads due to their slow speed.

Cross bikes are a “cross” between a mountain bike and a road bike.

Transylvania County is home to hundreds of miles of gravel roads throughout our national forests, state parks and other public lands, which makes owning a cross bike justifiable. Riding these gravel roads is not easy though. Many of them are chunky, rocky and will flatten an improper tire quickly. Road bikes are meant to be fast and efficient on asphalt. They vary in their purpose, from aggressive speed machines to more comfortable touring models, but the end result is the same. Transylvania County has some of the finest road riding in the country. Not many counties have

the Blue Ridge Parkway in their backyard or country roads that twist through Christmas tree farms. Cyclists can leave from Brevard and ride the flat roads through the French Broad River valley gaining little elevation, or they can climb to the Parkway or descend to South Carolina and climb back up to North Carolina. Mountain bikes are made for riding single-track trails. Brevard has long been an international destination for its mountain biking, and the bike shops here cater heavily to mountain bikers. Both Pisgah National Forest and DuPont State Recreational Forest are home to hundreds of miles of world-class trails, and draw thousands of riders each year from all over the world. A good mountain bike is sturdy enough to handle rough terrain but lightweight and efficient enough to climb to the top. Mountain bikes range in purpose, just like road bikes. Super-efficient cross country bikes are made for riders who are looking to cover distance and be competitive in local races like the Pisgah Stage Race, and trail bikes are made for just getting out there and enjoying the forest. Trail bikes have more suspension travel than cross country bikes and may be more balanced, meaning they are just as fun going downhill as going up. GETTING STARTED Brevard has several miles of a relatively flat multi-use path, making getting in shape while riding pretty safe. Many riders park their cars at Lowe’s to ride the paved path into town, giving riders a roughly 10-mile round trip back to the car. Some folks ride into Pisgah National Forest on the Eastatoe Trail, which ends at the Davidson River Campground. This section of trail is wide, flat and has fine gravel on it, so it is not muddy. There are a couple of bridges on this section, which can be icy in the winter, since the trail is located on the north side of the hill.

Clothing choice is important too for cycling, but it’s not necessary to spend a bunch of money on fancy bike gear, although it will make your experience more enjoyable. If you’re just riding to get some exercise around town, clothes that you might go hiking in are fine. Moisture wicking layers like wool in the winter and a windproof or rain jacket can help against the winter wind. In the summer, lightweight and breathable clothing is best. Cycling specific gear can be found at any of the local bike shops, and one key piece of gear for cycling longer distances is a good chamois, which is a padded pair of shorts or pants. This pad prevents you from putting pressure on the perineum when riding, which can cause other health issues like constipation or soreness, for example.

Hydration is important year round when cycling. Proper hydration can prevent cramping in most people and should be taken seriously. Brevard and Transylvania County are a bit more humid than other places, so people sweat more when they exercise.

Sweating is good for you, of course, but that water needs to be replaced even when it is cold out.

Giving your bike a once over is important before hitting the trails or road. If your bike has been sitting for a couple of years, taking it to any of the local bike shops for a tune up or any needed replacement parts will ensure that you don’t get stranded. Bike tuneup costs range from a few dollars for a possible broken shifter cable to hundreds for suspension overhaul. Staying on top of bike maintenance makes the experience more fun, and, just like a car, less expensive in the long run. YOGA IN YOUR EXERCISE ROUTINE traced to many factors, including a growing awareness among the general public regarding the impact a healthy lifestyle can have on both short- and long-term health. An essential component of a healthy lifestyle involves taking steps to protect our bodies, and that can include making an effort to reduce the aches and pains that are often associated with aging.

“The relaxation techniques incorporated in yoga can lessen chronic pain, such as lower back pain, arthritis, headaches and carpal tunnel syndrome,” explained Natalie Nevins, DO, a boardcertified osteopathic family physician and certified Kundalini Yoga instructor.

The American Osteopathic Association notes the benefits of yoga extend even further than relieving chronic pain. According to the AOA, yoga can help men, women and even children increase their flexibility as well as help them build stronger, more toned muscles. Additional benefits of yoga include weight reduction, improved cardiovascular and circulatory health and improved energy and vitality.

But the benefits of yoga extend beyond the physical to the mental. The American Psychological Association notes that several studies have shown that yoga can help strengthen social attachments, reduce stress and relieve anxiety, depression and insomnia. For example, a 2012 study from researchers at the University of California, Los Angeles, found that a particular type of yoga that included brief, daily meditation reduced the

One of the more attractive aspects of yoga is that it requires little or no financial commitment on the part of the people who practice it. Unlike fitness centers that typically require members to commit to yearly contracts or even potentially costly monthto-month memberships, many yoga studies do not require longterm commitments, instead asking that customers pay a small amount each time they visit if they are hesitant to commit to memberships. In addition, yoga requires just a mat and some appropriate clothing, ideally clothing that’s conducive to flexibility but not so loose that it will prevent you from performing certain poses.

Before including yoga in your exercise regimen, speak with your physician. Once you get the green light, look for a beginner’s course, explaining to your instructor that you are just starting out. Many yoga studios offer introductory classes that help men and women acclimate their bodies to yoga and the various poses it entails before moving on to more challenging poses.

What they call health care, I call sick care.”

Not all holistic health practitioners are shopkeepers. Brevard is home base for more than one acupuncturist, such as Paul Buchman, who said there isn’t really any other medicine that treats the whole person — taking the whole human system into consideration.

Buchman said that people in the West get excited about visceral health, but that Chinese medicine practitioners, like himself, look at the deeper energetic imbalance.

“We use the symptoms to track backwards,” he said. “This is how you can consider the spirit and also treat the inner health — the psycho-emotional health. It almost sounds blasphemous as a westerner, all in the same breathe, because we have doctors and physiologists and priests and all to handle the different aspects, and they are thereby inseparable.

“I had a (woman) this morning on my table. She’s an older patient, so she goes through routines. I was reassuring her that her back pain, if it got better, was the result of the deeper meridians becoming healthier, and the resolution of the back pain would be the side result. This is contrasted with a palliative notion – whether I use a drug or use my acupuncture needle to take away pain.” (continued on pg. 48)

“The symptom is calling us to give attention to the deeper system,” he said. “In the West, if you get heart burn, you take Tums.

In the East, we wonder why the energy is rising up into your throat and going in the wrong direction.

“You’ve got to come from the perspective that there is a subtle, beautiful energetic mechanism that is understood in the body that accounts for all the body’s activities. You have to look from the perspective that we are beautiful and high functioning. We’re a magnificent system, and Chinese medicine has found a way to understand and care for that. After a couple of thousand years of observation, we understand the maps of the energy flows in the system. I can use my needles to enhance that energetic flow.

Pilates, named after Joseph Pilates, is resistance work designed to strengthen targeted areas of the body.

The team at Elk Haven Wellness Center was assembled to provide people with affordable holistic health care alternatives, Roberts explained.

“We are a many-purposed wellness center,” she said. “We have two acupuncturists here, and we have a massage therapist, Pilates instruction,

yoga instruction and a practitioner of healing touch. She also practices rapid-eye technology, which is a healing modality that involves the eyes,

but it can be for things like post-traumatic stress disorder or trauma that we aren’t completely aware of. We also do cranial sacral therapy and acu-

pressure.

“The folks who work here have come because they have a similar philosophy. We work together, and we have something called Wellness

Wednesday, where we have one practitioner a month who presents a health topic for the public. What’s been interesting to me, when that person

is presenting, almost all of the other providers show up to learn from what the speaker is doing. In many ways, we are a team.”

Roberts said there are also two medical massage therapists at Elk Haven, who can work from a doctor’s clinical diagnosis or on whatever the

client wants addressed. Another popular service they offer is Pilates, an effective technique for improving posture and developing core strength.
