Hong Kong Races & Mission Hills December 2013

Hong Kong Races & Mission Hills December 4th-9th 2013 Imagine attending the biggest racing meeting in the world and then joining your mates for some golf at Mission Hills. What a way to finish the year! Situated on the southeast coast of China, Hong Kong’s strategic location on the Pearl River Delta and South China Sea has made it one of the world’s most thriving and cosmopolitan cities. Horse racing became a fixture in Hong Kong in 1841 but enjoyment of this sport was originally confined to the city’s elite. Today, a trip to one of the city’s world-class tracks – Happy Valley on Hong Kong Island or Sha Tin in the New Territories – will confirm that horse racing has very much gone mainstream in Hong Kong. Mission Hills Shenzhen stretches over 20-square kilometres. The golf complex features twelve 18-hole resort and championship courses designed by golf's greatest legends and architects.

Hong Kong Hong Kong can thank its colonial history and international harbour for the rich blend of cultures that provide it’s unique character. While the majority of the city’s population speak Chinese, simply walking the streets will expose you to a medley of Asian and European languages. The comfort with which these languages and dialects co-exist reflects the high level of cultural tolerance in Hong Kong, where multiple denominations of Christian churches share space with Chinese joss houses; Buddhist, Taoist and Sikh temples; mosques and synagogues. Moreover, the presence of enduring and ancient cultures in a society that has had to constantly adapt to change has created a unique contemporary culture that is a true mixture of tradition and innovation. In Hong Kong you will see elderly men playing ancient Chinese board games on digital tablets. Christmas is celebrated with as much fervour as Chinese New Year, and state-of-the-art skyscrapers are designed in consultation with feng shui masters.

Hong Kong Races In Hong Kong the city's chief recreational passion — horse racing — lies in a floodlit oasis of green in the heart of Hong Kong Island. The "Sport of Kings," the only legal form of gambling in Hong Kong, is embraced with unbridled fervour. One racing season, from September to July, can pull in more than HK$91 billion! While there's a second racecourse in Sha Tin for weekend meets, nothing beats the adrenalinecharged atmosphere of Happy Valley. With its tight tracks and high stands, it resembles a Roman amphitheatre. As the travel writer Jan Morris once wrote, "Happy Valley on race day is a bitter, brilliant, grasping place.“

Mission Hills Mission Hills is the world's largest golf club according to the Guinness World Records. Winner of multiple international awards, the 20square kilometre golf complex features twelve 18hole resort and championship courses designed by golf's greatest legends and architects. Mission Hills is the cradle of golf in China and hosts the region's most important tournaments, including the World Cup of Golf and the Asian Amateur Championship.

Golf Clubs & Course Overview Olazabal course Mission Hills Even the best of golfers will find this course a challenge! Majestic vistas of untouched jungle and natural flowing streams create outstanding backdrops throughout the golf course. The signature square tees, along with undulating concave paspalum fairways, are two distinguishing features of this course. But it is the remarkable splash bunkers that catch your eye, and will dominate your memories of the course.

Annika course Mission Hills This was Annika's first designer course in the world, and showcases her best asset: precision. Playing on the Annika Course requires accuracy on the golfer's part. It has spectacular views of the natural terrain- mountains which rise more than 100 meters above the golf course.

Nicklaus course Mission Hills The World Cup Course, venue of the 41st World Cup in 1995, is another masterpiece by legendary golfer Jack Nicklaus. "It’s a really great course," said Jesper Parnevik, who made a hole-in-one on the 15th during the World Cup.

Activity Overview Hong Kong Races Sha Tin and Happy Valley The Hong Kong Jockey Club was formed in 1884 and the HKJC holds a government granted monopoly for taking bets on Hong Kong horse racing events. The Hong Kong Jockey Club administers horse racing at two racetracks, Sha Tin and Happy Valley, and they hold nearly 700 horse races per year with large crowds averaging around 46,000 people per race card. The HKJC hosts International Race day at Sha Tin racecourse annually each December. It is one of the biggest race days in Asia each year. Feature races held on the day include the Hong Kong Sprint over 1200m, Hong Kong Mile over 1600m, Hong Kong Cup at 2000m and the Hong Kong Vase over 2400m.

Lamma Island Lunch on Lamma Island Hong Kong Hong Kong is one of our favourite cities, and one of the reasons is the food! A short ferry ride from Central HK and you are on Lamma Island, home to a huge variety of fresh seafood restaurants. Make sure you stop in at Rainbow Seafood!!
