Just Keep on Livin’

L

ife should feel meaningful and rewarding. But how does a person manifest this vision and ensure that it’s sustainable through the various seasons of one’s life? How do you maintain inspiration in a time when the Nation that you call home is in such flux? We hope that the curated collection of editorials in this special issue can serve as a guide for conversation and a step towards clarity, healing and happiness, both individually and collectively.

Global Citizens Increasingly, our purpose will need to center not just on our own individual need, family and neighborhood but also

we must have a macro view of the world and a collective commitment to the greater social good. We hope that the article “Global Education” which features the Trevor Noah Foundation makes this case and shows that we have more in common than that which divides us. In the article “Dear Anybody Who Dares to Ask the Question Why,” Fred Baldwin provides candid reflection on life after the Civil Rights Movements of the 40s-60’s. His candor offers insight on current trends, how we continue to move forward and what it means to actively live the dream of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

The Best is Yet to Come Between personal loss, natural disaster and the perpetual challenges of survival, it is essential that we make space for moments of laughter, fresh air and to nurture open hearts that allow us to freely (and daily) say words such as, “Please”, “Thank You”, I’m Sorry” and “I Love You.” At Tré, we strive to celebrate our humanity and to take all these lessons to heart. We are united in that pursuit and we hope that, after reading the pieces in the following pages, you’ll be better equipped to join us.

Policy + Politics

Controversy of the Month

The Civil Rights leaders who tirelessly fought against this once-racially segregated south, must be rolling in their graves to see the contract-focused exploitation of Texas children as well as the indifference of those in leadership to the damaging impact of their policies and poor stewardship. Although, the miseducation of the Negro was initially by design, post-integration, the impact is no longer isolated. The institutional demise of North Forest ISD and Houston ISD is more than tragic. An undereducated society hurts the students, fosters a non-competitive workforce, increases crime and erodes the national economy. #AllLivesMatter #HistoricallyUnderserved #BeBest

Thousands of Houston-area students united in April 2018 to protest gun violence with walkouts and organized rallies. Rather than head the warning of the nationwide “March for our Lives” initative, several Texas School Districts threaten to suspend any student who chose to leave class to protest, citing that it would negatively impact their attendance-based funding.

The Library of Congress acquired the archive of Bob Adelman, a photographer who helped document the Civil Rights Struggle. Gifted by an anonymous donor, it comprises 575,000 images, negatives, and slides, including 50,000 prints.

Life began in Africa, the cradle of humanity and civilization. Scientists confirm the first Homo sapiens evolved in Africa between 56,000 and 200,000 years ago and then steadily migrated over the entire world for tens of thousands of years. Referred to by anthropolgists as the Out Of Africa II theory, the research-backed discovery involves a previous African exodus by tribes of Homo erectus, followed by the scattering of Homo sapiens that eventually became human civilization. QUOTABLE Now we’ve got to do something about this, we’ve got to give them [Negroes] a little something, just enough to quiet them down, not enough to make a difference. For if we don’t move at all, then their allies will line up against us and there’ll be no way of stopping them, we’ll lose the filibuster and there’ll be no way of putting a brake on all sorts of wild legislation. he end of the Civil War in 1865 brought three constitutional amendments which abolished slavery, made former slaves citizens of the United States, and gave all men the right to vote, regardless of race. However, measures such as literacy tests and

poll taxes were used by many states to continue the disenfranchisement of African-Americans and Jim Crow laws helped those same states to enforce segregation and condone race-based violence from groups like the Ku Klux Klan.

These Negroes, they’re getting pretty uppity these days and that’s a problem for us since they’ve got something now they never had before, the political pull to back up their uppityness.” Lyndon B. Johnson, Commander in Chief / 36th President of the United States of America

Many years passed with minimal action taken to enforce civil rights. In 1963, Pres. John F. Kennedy decided it was time to act, proposing the most sweeping civil rights legislation to date.

On June 2, 1964, President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act, which was considered the most sweeping Civil Rights legislation since Reconstruction.

Two steps forward... Congress expanded the act in subsequent years, passing additional legislation in order to move toward more equality for African-Americans, including the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

The More Things Change From President Woodrow Wilson’s 1915 endorsement of the film ‘Birth of a Nation’ to biased news reporting techniques of today, manipulation and leveraging fake news have long been a strategy to undermine unity. Pres. Johnson is noted to state ”If you can convince the lowest white man that he’s better than the best colored man, he won’t notice you’re picking his pocket.”

In the 50+ years since the Civil Rights Act of 1964 was signed into law, significant progress toward guaranteeing the equality of all Americans regardless of race, ethnicity, gender, disability, religion, or sexual orientation, has been made. Mansa Musa 14th Century African king is the worlds richest man of his time and of all time!

M Mansa Musa: The Lion of Mali by Khephra Burns (Author), Leo & Diane Dillon (Illustrator) Caldecott Medalists Leo and Diane Dillon capture the grandeur of Africa’s ancient empires, lands, and people in stunning paintings as this richly imagined tale of the boyhood of Mansa Musa, one of Mali’s most celebrated kings, carries us across the continent on a triumphant journey of self-discovery.

Undeniably, one of the richest people in history, Musa Keita I (c. 1280—c. 1337) was the tenth Mansa of the wealthy West African Mali Empire. Musa Keita, commonly referred to as Mansa Musa in Western manuscripts and literature, held many titles such as Emire of Melle, Lord of the Mines of Wangara, Conqueror of Ghanata, Lion of Mali and at least a dozen more.

Accession to the Throne Musa Keita was appointed deputy and became Mansa (which translates to “sultan”, “conqueror” or “emperor”) after Abubakari Keita II, the king before him, embarked on an expedition to explore the limits of the Atlantic Ocean, and never returned.

Musa, a devout Muslim, made his pilgrimage to Mecca between 1324– 1325. Musa gave gold to the poor he met along his route and traded gold for souvenirs. When Mansa Musa returned from Mecca, he brought back many Arabian scholars and architects and embarked on a large building program, raising mosques and madrasas in Timbuktu and Gao. Most notably, the ancient center of learning Sankore Madrasah (or University of Sankore) was constructed during his reign.

The Real Golden Age During this period, there was an advanced level of urban living in the major centers of Mali. Sergio Domian, an Italian scholar of art and architecture, wrote of this period: “Thus was laid the foundation of an urban civilization. At the height of its power, Mali had at least 400 cities, and the interior of the Niger Delta was very densely populated.”

Under Musa’s reign, the University of Sankore in Timbuktu was restaffed with jurists, astronomers, and mathematicians and staffed with the largest collections of books in Africa since the Library of Alexandria. The Sankoré University was capable of housing 25,000 students and had one of the largest libraries in the world with roughly 1,000,000 manuscripts.

“Ending HIV is not only a lifesaving endeavor, it is also an economically sound approach that saves millions of dollars in health care costs,” said Mayor Turner. “I’m proud to add Houston as a Fast Track City, complementing the quality work of the Houston Health Department in ending the HIV epidemic.”

The Fast-Track Cities Paris Declaration is a commitment by municipalities to achieve the 90-9090 HIV treatment targets by 2020. These targets will rapidly reduce new HIV infections and AIDS related deaths and put cities, now to include Houston and Harris County, on the “fast track” to end the AIDS epidemic by 2030. The Declaration calls on cities to strengthen their local HIV/AIDS responses and meet a set of targets to significantly reduce new HIV infections and end-AIDS related deaths. These targets are to ensure that 90 percent of people living with HIV (PLHIV) will know their status, that 90 percent of all PLHIV will receive sustained anti-retroviral treatment and that 90 percent of all PLHIV on anti-retroviral treatment will have durable viral suppression.

Beau J. Mitts, MPH of The Houston Health Department Bureau of HIV/ STD & Viral Hepatitus Prevention reminds residents that free and confidential HIV and other STD testing are offered at its health centers and mobile clinic. People can call 832-393-5010 or the City of Houston 311 Help & Info Line to find the nearest health center. The mobile clinic schedule and health center locations are also available at HoustonHealth.org.

Health

UNDER ATTACK

A health survey indicates forty-three percent of Houston’s Fifth Ward families living in homes located over a creosote contamination plume report at least one cancer diagnosis.

T

he percentage is relatively high for the neighborhood since the average cancer diagnosis for Houston is 6.1 percent. Most received a cancer diagnosis after 2003.

Historic Injustice Lung cancer was one of the most common types of cancer among respondents or their family members, the survey also points out. It is one of the cancers associated with the chemicals of concern identified by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality in the Union Pacific Railroad groundwater contamination.

“It is disconcerting that people with a cancer diagnosis in this neighborhood may have been exposed to creosote for four decades,” said Loren Hopkins, chief environmental science officer at the Houston Health Department.

Worse Than Expected In all fairness, this problem was inherited, by Union Pacific Railroad and the plume of cancer-causing chemical creosote had spread to the neighborhood over many decades before their purchase. A Texas Department of State Health Services report in August identified several census tracts in the Fifth Ward and Kashmere Gardens with greater-thanexpected incidences of adult cancers of the lung, esophagus and throat.

Other survey findings include: • Households with a family member diagnosed with cancer report facing financial challenges that include depleted savings, unpaid medical bills, going into debt and unpaid bills that resulted in the shut off of utilities. • Nearly a third of respondents with a cancer diagnosis reported irregular menstruation and slightly more than a fifth reported a child with low birth weight or infertility. • Most of the respondents noticed an oily smell or oily water. • The top three chronic diseases affecting respondents were allergies, diabetes and high blood pressure. We will keep you updated. We’re hoping Union Pacific addresses these issue in a meaningful, measurable and authentic manner. TRÉ Magazine · Vol X, Issue 01

GLOBAL EDUCATION Trevor Noah’s non-profit has established itself as an organization that supplies troubled youth with the education, life skills, and social capital essential for the pursuit of opportunities beyond high school.

T

revor Noah’s childhood in late-state apartheid South Africa colored his perception of the world. The host of the Daily Show is more than just a comedian. He has taken his success back to his homeland to build a new generation of inspired individuals.

What’s the Word? The Trevor Noah Foundation is a Johannesburg based non-profit organization that equips orphans and vulnerable youth with the education, life skills, and social

capital necessary to pursue further opportunity upon graduating high school or matric. It’s vision is a South Africa that advances because each generation excels beyond its predecessor. With an estimated 3.7 million orphans and vulnerable children and an unemployment rate of approximately 60% for youth under 25, it’s goal is to prevent South Africa’s most vulnerable youth from slipping through the cracks.

Leveraging Privilage In his recent memoir, “Born

Did You Know? Although Arab history is closely intertwined with Muslim history, there are significant non-Muslim communities in the Arab world. Islam is an Abrahamic, religion teaching that there is only one God (Allah), and that Muhammad is a messenger of God. It is the world’s secondlargest religion with over 1.9 billion followers or 24.4% of the world’s population, commonly known as Muslims. Muslims make up a majority of the population

in over 50 countries. Islam teaches that God is merciful, unique, all-powerful and has guided mankind through prophets, revealed scriptures and natural signs. The primary scriptures of Islam are the Quran, believed to be the verbatim word of God, and the teachings and normative examples of Muhammad.

Reflection

66

TRÉ Magazine · Vol X, Issue 01

Fred Baldwin Noted photographer and co-founder of FotoFest, Fred Baldwin has recently published, Dear Mr Picasso: An Illustrated Love Affair with Freedom. The book is a photographic memoir of Baldwin’s extraordinary life: how he followed his dream, used his imagination, overcame fear, and acted to accomplish anything.

DEAR ANYBODY WHO WANTS TO ASK THE QUESTION WHY? By Fred Baldwin

O

n January 21, 2020, I received an unsolicited message from Daren Walker, president of the Ford Foundation. It must have been sent to at least one million other people but I was moved by Mr. Walker’s message. He wrote about “Hard work and hope – how we move forward during the year ahead…” It honored the legacy to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. This message inspired me to do something I had never done before. It was for me a measure bordering on inappropriate and perhaps edging toward lunacy. I wrote a letter to Daren Walker and offered to send him a signed print of a photograph that I had taken of Dr King in January 1964 – as a gift. It was a duplicate of one that had been donated to President Obama in November 2018 by Secretary Baker of the Baker Institute of Public Policy.

Why had I done this? Why was I sending a donation the head of the Ford Foundation when common practice is the other way around? Why was the upside-down impulse so powerful? Upon deep reflection I have decided that “the other way around” led me to make the photograph in the first place. As a young white Southern photographer, I had become involved with the Civil Rights Movement because I felt that my “white” perceptions needed to be – not only “turned around” but turned upside down to understand what was on the other side. I feel deeply that the same is true today – but this terrifying state of “upside downiness” is exaggerated on a daily basis. I wanted to give this image as an appropriate symbol that flips our vindictive culture in the direction of hope in tribute to Dr. King and thanks to Daren Walker and remind America that individuals can make a difference.

Confidence is Beautiful is a platform sharing stories about beauty from the perspective of those who aren’t always seen as beautiful. Beauty around the world is European driven and female-focused and many times what we called inner beauty, doesn’t even register. This new project, Confidence is Beautiful, wants to expand, and also redefine what is beauty by looking at beauty from different social groups outside of our current social beauty standards.

Love Thyself The project kicked off in January of this year with stories from six AfricanAmerican women sharing how they what they find beautiful about themselves. With their stories you will find that those things that made us once feel awkward or strange are the exact things that as older women, gives them confidence. This first group are friends who meet for dinner

monthly. One month they invited me to share in their dinner” said Donna Jackson, the creator of Confidence. “As I looked around the table, I saw the diversity in their skin, hair, and lives. I also felt that each of them was comfortable in their bodies and skin. I loved it and thought they would be a perfect start for this project.” Through out the year, Donna and her team will continue to collect stories that expand from women over 60 to LGBTQ.
