The Legend of Towel man

Traditions

by Robert VanGundy

8

Towel Man first emerged in the 1980s at William and Mary Men’s basketball games. During one of the most successful periods in the program, the Kappa Sigma Fraternity showed up in force in white T-shirts and had a member lead the T-R-I-B-E cheer. Over the next 20 years or so, the cheer fell out of fashion. Amidst the very successful 2009-2010 basketball season Tribe Fan legend Chase Hathaway took up the mantle as Towel Man and led the cheer at the near sellout game against ODU. Though the Tribe lost the heartbreaker by 3 points, the tradition of Towel Man was revived. Chase led the crowd for the rest of the season, through the CAA Tournament Championship Games and in the second ever post season game for the Tribe in a tough NIT loss at basketball powerhouse UNC.

During senior night a brief Passing of the Towel ceremony took place and at the conclusion of the basketball season, freshman Robert VanGundy took the helm of Towel-Man. Appearing at a few baseball games that year, he rallied the home crowd, and honed his craft. During the next year, Towel Man appeared at Volleyball, Football, Men’s and Women’s Basketball, and Baseball, helping lead the home crowd in cheering on the Tribe’s student athletes. It was more the same in the 2011-2012, Towel Man returned in high spirits ready to cheer on the Tribe. Entering the 2012-2013 season with optimism, senior Robert VanGundy looks forward to his last year as Towel Man and looks forward to a Passing the Towel ceremony of his own, and hopes that his successor will enjoy leading the Tribe Fans in the beloved cheer.

Plumeri Park is our baseball stadium located on Ironbound Road approximately 2 miles off campus. The trolley and Red Line will take you right to the Park. The stadium is fan-friendly, seating up to 1,000 people. Concessions are sold beneath the stands. The student section is located down the first base line, and promotions are regularly held during and after the games. One of the best things to do on a Saturday at William & Mary is take the trolley down to the field, take in a few innings of baseball from a team that holds the record for sac flys for 2012 and which qualified for the NCAA Division I Baseball Championship in 1983 and 2001, and then head on down to visit Rosie in concessions for a Plumeri dog or a pretzel. Finish out watching the game, take the trolley back to campus, and hit up Berrybody (with your Tribal Fever discount).

A

Brief History Of

athletics

21

A Brief History of Tribe Athletics By Peter Hays 1893 – The William and Mary “Orange and White” take the football field for the first time in a 16 – 4 loss to the Norfolk YMCA. They were known as the Orange and White because those were the old official school colors after the crest of King William of Orange. 1898 – The Capital Cup rivalry begins with a 15 – 0 loss to Richmond. This rivalry has been played 121 times as of last year and is the fourth most played rivalry in college football. 1905 – William and Mary begins their campaign on the hardwood posting a 4 – 1 mark in their first ever basketball season. 1910 – William and Mary changes its nickname to the “Orange and Black” because the white uniforms were too difficult to keep clean. 1916 – The College changes its nickname again to the Indians because of the Indian School that operated in the Brafferton prior to the Revolutionary War. 1935 – Cary Field is opened in a 0 – 0 tie against the University of Virginia. Cary Field was built for the football team after students used bleachers from the old stadium to construct a bonfire. 1942 – William and Mary has one of their best football seasons in school history posting a 9-1-1 record and defeating the Oklahoma Sooners in Norman, Oklahoma. 1947 – The Indians win their first ever national championship, in Men’s Tennis. 1948 – The Men’s Tennis team goes back-to-back winning another title. This would be the last national championship any William and Mary team would earn.

22

1948 – William and Mary earns a bid to their first ever bowl game but loses 21 – 19 to the Arkansas Razorbacks in the Dixie Bowl in Birmingham, Alabama. William and Mary, however, would get their revenge, beating the Razorbacks in the next two meetings between the teams, both in Little Rock, Arkansas. 1949 – William and Mary earns their first (and only) bowl victory, a 20 – 0 win over the Oklahoma A&M (now Oklahoma State) Cowboys in the Delta Bowl in Memphis, Tennessee. 1951 – Scandal rocks the football program and the entire Athletics Department when it is discovered that head football coach Rube McCray had altered academic transcripts to get athletes into the college. The athletes also earned credits for classes they did not take while attending the college. After the scandal came to light, the school deemphasized athletics and the program was never the same. 1953 – Because of the Scandal of 1951, only 24 football players remained on the football squad. The team miraculously went 5-4-1 and they were nicknamed the “Iron Indians” for their ability to overcome such daunting obstacles. 1970 – William and Mary earns their final bowl bid and lose 40 – 12 to the Toledo Rockets in the Tangerine Bowl in Orlando Florida. 1970 – William and Mary hall opens and hosts the Men’s and Women’s Basketball programs. North Carolina defeated the Indians 101-72 in the inaugural game. The game took place before the arena was completed and teams huddled on the bus during halftime to get out of the cold. 1978 – William and Mary determines the nickname Indians may be offensive and changes the team name to the current moniker, Tribe.

23

1978 – John Dalton, an alumnus of the College, is elected governor of Virginia and vows to bring William and Mary back into prominence on the gridiron. He begins to stack the Board of Visitors with people who share his enthusiasm for Tribe athletics. The improvement to the Athletic Department would have included a renovation to Cary Field. 1979-1980 – Massive protests are held on campus against the governor’s plan. Even the governor’s own daughter participated in the protests. The movement is headed by the Amos Alonzo Stagg society which was formed by faculty and students who opposed the emphasis on athletics and was lead by Professor David L. Holmes. Student referenda both indicated that over ninety percent of the student body opposed the governor and his plan. (idiots) 1980 – Current coach Jimmye Laycock takes the reins of the Tribe football team and has been the most successful coach in William and Mary history. 1983 – William and Mary earns its first ever birth in the NIT basketball tournament but lose 85 – 79 in the first round against Virginia Tech. 1988 – The Tribe forgoes postseason play to participate in the Epson Ivy Bowl in Japan. The bowl game typically consisted of an Ivy League All-Star team against a Japanese AllStar team, however William and Mary was chosen to participate in 1988 even though they were not an Ivy League school. The Tribe defeated the Japanese All-Stars 73 – 3. 1992 – William and Mary again chooses to travel to Japan instead of participate in the football playoffs and defeat Nippon University 35 – 19 in the Epson Ivy Bowl.

24

2003 – Tony Shaver becomes the Tribe’s Men’s Basketball coach and has brought the Tribe to new heights during his tenure. 2004 – Zable Stadium gets light fixtures for the first time in history when the Tribe plays a semifinal playoff game against the James Madison Dukes. The Tribe would lose 48 –34. 2010 – The Men’s Basketball team earns their second birth in the NIT tournament but again lose in the first round this time to the University of North Carolina 80 – 72. 2010 – William and Mary begins the Battle for the Silver Mace with a 21 – 17 win over the Old Dominion Monarchs in Norfolk, Virginia.
