Charlton focused on World Outdoors

The championship glory continues to pour in for two-time world indoor champion Devynne Charlton since her return home from the 2025 World Indoor Championships hosted in Nanjing, China, last month.

The 29-year-old Olympian claimed her second straight gold medal in the women’s 60m hurdles event with a season’s best time of 7.72 seconds. The second consecutive world

indoor championship feat was second to none but her focus will now shift to the outdoor season which is highlighted by 2025 World Athletics Championships slated for September 13-21 in Tokyo, Japan. Despite her success at the indoor level, she admitted that her confidence level is not “as high” going into the outdoor season, but the plan is to address the deficiencies as the season moves along. “[It is] not as high. Looking at the race, the way I kind of lost a little bit of form towards the end of it doesn’t bode well for the outdoor race which is 40 more metres and five more hurdles. I think it just shows

that I have more work to do but I think it shows that there is something there to work with, but I definitely just need to go back and put some work in and address my deficiencies. September is a long ways away so I have more than enough time to get it done,” she said.

Charlton was just one position shy of a podium spot in her last appearance at the World Athletics Championships two seasons ago in Budapest, Hungary. She posted a time of 12.52 seconds for fourth place in the finals of the women’s 100m hurdles.

Additionally, she clocked a new national record of 12.44 seconds in the first round of the prelims for that event.

The Olympian spoke about what she needs to adjust to be in top form leading up to the “big dance.”

“I think more of the same thing - just take it one day and one practice session at a time and just keep working towards excellence. The race is longer so it is more of a strength and endurance component so that is gonna be the focus in practice,” the world indoor record holder said.

Prior to this season’s world indoors, Charlton faced some setbacks which included a chipped bone injury she sustained just one meet after the 2024 Paris Olympic Games. The gifted hurdler also had to battle through a muscle strain early in the season which derailed some of her progress going into the global meet in March. Although the odds were stacked, Charlton gutted out some of her best performances on the track for the indoor season. She recorded a season’s best

Charlton are on the move. Both sophomores have decided to test out the waters in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) transfer portal. Collins, who spent the last two seasons with the University of Mississippi (Ole Miss) Rebels, took to social media to make her announcement.

“I’m incredibly thankful for the experiences and growth I’ve had during my two years at Ole Miss. These years have challenged me in ways I never expected, helping me become a stronger player and person. The memories I’ve made and the lessons I’ve learned will stay with me wherever I go.

“After giving it a lot of thought and prayer, I’ve chosen to enter the transfer portal. Thank you to Ole Miss and the Oxford community for your unwavering support throughout this journey,” Collins posted.

The 6-foot-2 forward suited up two seasons for Ole Miss, under the tutelage of Grand Bahamian head coach Yolett “Coach Yo” Mcphee-McCuin.

THE Bahamas Baptist Sports Federation completed its 2025 softball tournament with Golden Gates regaining the title.

Golden Gates, the last team to dominate the previously Baptist Sports Council in 2019 before the federation was introduced last year, clinched the title on Saturday with a 25-5 rout of Macedonia at the Charles W Saunders High School.

The victory came after Golden Gates dethroned last year’s champions Jubilee Ministries 21-3 in their sudden death playoff earlier in the day.

Macedonia, last year’s runners-up, won over New Bethlehem in the other half of the semifinals.

During her two-year tenure at Ole Miss, she turned in 2.1 ppg and 1.8 rebounds while converting 40.5 per cent of her field goals.

Recently, Collins and the Ole Miss Rebels fell to the top seeded UCLA Bruins 76-62 to end their NCAA postseason run in the Sweet 16. Collins is just the second Bahamian since Valerie Nesbitt to suit up for the Lady Rebels with “Coach Yo” at the helm.

University of North Alabama sophomore Veronaye Charlton is also in search of greener pastures after playing two seasons with the Lions.

In a heartfelt message on social media, Charlton thanked the UNA Lions for their contributions to her collegiate basketball career. “I just wanted to take a moment to express my gratitude for the amazing journey I’ve had with the UNA Lions. I’ve grown tremendously, both on and off the court, and I’m so thankful for the friendships,

Golden Gates produced three runs in the first, seven in the second, five in the third, three in the fourth, one in the fifth, five in the sixth and another in the seventh for their rout. Macedonia could only counter with four in the second and one more in the fifth. Stevens was the winning pitcher for Golden Gates and Wright was tagged with the loss for Macedonia.

Philip Knowles had a perfect 4-for-4 day with a homer, an RBI and two runs scored, Kemuel Knowles went 2-for-4 and both Deshone Rolle and Mi Turner had a pair of walks and scored a run each.

Golden Gates 21, Jubilee Ministries 3 Ferron Moss was 3-for-4 with a grand slam home run for one of his three runs scored to lead the way in their semifinal match.

Sherman Ferguson was 3-for-3 with three RBI and five runs scored, Kristin Fulford was 4-for-5 with three runs scored, Kenya Forbes was 2-for-4 with an RBI and three runs scored and Vashawna Bastian and winning pitcher Thela Stevens both scored two runs.

Golden Gates came up with six runs in the first, three in the second, one in the third, five in the fourth, one in the fifth and five in the sixth.

Ladonian McKenzie had a solo homer in the second to put Jubilee on the scoreboard before Sophia Cartwright and Zion Duncombe singled and walked, scoring their other two runs in the sixth. With softball complete, the BBSF will now prepare for the rest of its calendar of events this year with volleyball in June, cycling in July, basketball in September and track and field on Saturday, October 25.

NBA Tuesday Recap: ‘Buddy’ and Warriors defeat Grizzlies 134-125

GRAND Bahamian

sharpshooter Chavano

“Buddy” Hield and the Golden State Warriors imposed their will against the Memphis Grizzlies to secure a 134-125 victory on Tuesday night at the FedExForum in Memphis, Tennessee.

The latest victory by Golden State helped them to skip ahead of Memphis in the Western Conference standings for the fifth seed with a 44-31 (win/loss record).

The Grizzlies, who recently fired their former head coach Taylor Jenkins, fell to the sixth seed with a 44-32 win/loss record. Hield led the Warriors’ bench unit in scoring with eight points, three rebounds and a steal but he shot 2-for-7 from the field and 2-for-2 at the charity stripe. It was a vintage shooting night for Golden State superstar Stephen Curry. He got it cooking from the first half and proceeded to finish the game with a whopping 52 points, 10 boards, eight assists and five steals. Curry had his shot going on the road. He

shot 16-for-31 from the field and connected on 12-of-20 three-pointers.

Warriors forward Jimmy Butler III quietly had a decent showing with 27 points, six rebounds, four assists and three steals in 38 minutes.

On the opposing side, Memphis guard Ja Morant turned in 36 points, six assists and two steals in the loss.

Curry, who is arguably the NBA’s greatest shooter of all-time, made it look easy against the Grizzlies defence.

He threw in a deep stepback three at the 4:04 mark

of the opening quarter to give the Warriors a 31-18 edge early on.

Golden State had their highest scoring quarter in the first period to lead 45-32 with three to go.

Memphis locked in to their game plan in the second period and managed to cut the deficit down to just two points (68-66) after Morant nailed a three with 1:30 on the clock.

Despite gaining some ground, the Grizzlies still trailed 74-66 at the halftime break.

The Grizzlies came out of the halftime break determined to take control of the

contest. Morant once again canned a deep three to tie the score at 80 apiece in the third period.

The team finally got the lead when Grizzlies big Jaren Jackson Jr made a two-pointer to charge ahead 85-84.

The Grizzlies tied the score again around the three-minute mark but Hield extended the Warriors lead with a three at the 3:19 mark.

The score was knotted at 103-103 headed into the final quarter of play.

The home team had the better shooting performance that night, making 47.8 per cent of their field goals while Golden State made just 42.4 per cent. However, the Grizzlies could not overcome a classic 50-point plus night from Curry. They were outrebounded 49-43 in the contest.

Hield and the Golden State Warriors’ road trip continues tonight at 10pm against the Los Angeles Lakers in the Crypto.com Arena.

Memphis played the Warriors close down the stretch but got outscored 31-22 in the fourth quarter which resulted in their 32nd loss of the season.

BETTORS BACK DUKE MEN AND UCONN WOMEN FOR NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Duke shines even in a Final Four of all No. 1 seeds.

The early betting money went on the Blue Devils to win their semifinal Saturday against Houston, with the opening line at DraftKings Sportsbook quickly going from 4 1/2 to 5 1/2 points.

Bettors see a Duke team led by sensational freshman Cooper Flagg that has won 15 games in a row, all but three by double digits.

“(Bettors will) continue to play Duke,” said Johnny Avello, DraftKings race and sports operations director. “Duke has been been brilliant through the ACC Tournament right into the big tournament here, and Flagg’s playing great. So they’ll just continue to put their money on them.”

BetMGM Sportsbook is seeing a similar surge in Blue Devils bets.

Duke by far is drawing the most money at BetMGM, taking in 40.5% of the handle to win the national championship. The next closest is Florida at 11.7%.

It’s largely big bets on the Blue Devils because the total number of tickets is much closer, with Duke attracting 14.1% compared to 9.1% for the Gators.

One person put $500,000 at that sportsbook on Duke at +350 to win the title.

DUKE forward Cooper Flagg (2) reacts during the first half of a Sweet 16 round NCAA college basketball tournament game, Thursday, March 27, 2025, in Newark, N.J. (AP Photo/Frank Franklin II)

That turned out to be a good price. Duke opened the season at +1100 at BetMGM to win the championship and now is at -110. Florida had an even more dramatic move, going from +4000 to +300. The Gators are favoured by 2 1/2 points at both sportsbooks to beat fellow Southeastern Conference member Auburn.

“The tournament has gone in the bettors’ favour with favourites consistently winning,” BetMGM trading manager Christian Cipollini said. “The sportsbook is cheering against a DukeFlorida final.”

South Carolina, UConn drawing action On the women’s side, bettors believe in championship coaches Dawn Staley of South Carolina and Geno Auriemma of UConn to get it done, even though the Huskies are the only No. 2 seed in either Final Four. UConn, in fact, is attracting 30.3% of the handle and 17.3% of the ticket count to win the national championship, which would be the school’s 12th but first in nine years. Paige Bueckers and the Huskies first have to get by UCLA in Friday’s semifinal, but they

are 8 1/2-point favourites at BetMGM and DraftKings.

The number opened at 10 1/2 points at DraftKings before it was bet down.

“Connecticut’s always loaded,” Avello said. “Paige Bueckers is a special player. It will be tough to beat that team because he’s an outstanding coach. He knows how to get it done. (Bettors) thought 10 1/2 points was a bit too many.”

South Carolina has won three national championships since 2017, including last year’s title. The Gamecocks are in the Final Four for the fifth consecutive season.

They are behind only UConn at BetMGM in terms of money bet (23.9%) and number of tickets (14.8%).

South Carolina is favoured by 4 1/2 points in the semifinals at both sportsbooks.

“BetMGM will be pulling for the dogs to cover and hopefully pull off an upset if not two,” BetMGM sports trader Hannah Luther said. “Factoring in the futures markets, a Texas versus UCLA final is the best case scenario.”

Looking ahead

DraftKings has lines up for the potential men’s championship matchups. Duke would be favoured by 4 1/2 points over Florida and 5 1/2 over Auburn. The Gators would be 1 1/2-point favourites over Houston,

and the Cougars would be a one-point favourite over Auburn.

Lines weren’t available on the women’s side, but UConn was a -160 favourite to win it all. South Carolina was +260.

Bad times for the books This has been a difficult March Madness for sportsbooks because casual bettors tend to put their money on favourites. “This hasn’t been our greatest tournament revenue-wise,” Avello said. “But we’ve still

got a couple of games to go. I can tell you, the players have a lot of bullets right now, so I expect a lot of action in this Final Four.” Bad beat Michigan State bettors had to be cursing when the Spartans beat Mississippi 73-70 in the Sweet 16. Ole Miss’ Matthew Murrell made a 3-point — off the back iron, no less — at the buzzer that allowed those betting on the Rebels to cover the 3 1/2-point spread at BetMGM.

Mingoes earn 5-4 win over Titans

A 5-0 brace for the first hour helped the University of The Bahamas men’s soccer team to edge out the undefeated Western Warriors Titans 5-4 to open Division I play on a winning note Sunday at the Roscow A.L. Davies Soccer Fields.

It was a revenge game for UB in the Bahamas Men’s Soccer League after getting trounced by the Titans 5-1 earlier in February. It was the first time UB beat the two-time defending league champions in school history.

UB got two goals each from defensive midfielder Justin Minns and captain and central midfielder Ronaldo Green. Philip Pilgrim scored one goal.

“It felt good to score my first goal. I got the monkey off my back and happy to score two goals,” Minns said.

Minns, who plays centre defence, moved up to defensive midfielder for this contest and made the most of it. Minns was on the receiving end of a free kick from Kevin Thomas in the 23rd minute. He headed it down before scoring with his right foot to put his squad up 1-0. It was his first goal as a Mingoe.

UB drew a foul just at the top of the 18-yard box. Green elected to take the freekick in the 28th minute. He saw an opening on the back post and sent the ball past an outstretched Warriors goalkeeper to score the goal to put UB up 2-0.

UB was on the attack once again, this time on the left flank that saw Elijah Mitchell beat the left back and got inside the 18-yard box. Mitchell sent a driving cross across the face of the goal. A lurking Pilgrim used his right feet to score the goal in the 32nd minute to put UB up 3-0. Titans tried to pull one back ln UB before the half but they were unable to get past the defence as UB held the 3-0 lead at the intermission.

It was an even game right out the halftime break but Minns controlled a corner kick from Thomas and beat the goalkeeper near post to put his squad up 4-0 in the 55th minute. UB was not finished yet as Green got a break away and got fouled to win a penalty kick. Green elected to take the penalty-kick that went low left and past the

keeper who barely moved to give UB the 5-0 lead at the 59th minute mark. It turned out to be the game-winning goal for UB.

“This game helps to build morale and to show other teams and our players that we can do it. We executed the plan perfectly and we came out with the three points,” Green said.

UB looked like they were going to win the game easily, but the Titans were not going to give up as they poured in four goals before the full-time whistle blew and UB got the win.

UB’s head caoch Alex Thompson said it was a collaborative win. “We sat back and let them have possession and we decided to attack them in space and fortunately for us, the game plan worked,” Thompson said.

The win has UB sitting in second place with three points in the second round Division I play.

UB returns to the field 7 pm Sunday, April 6, against Renegades F.C. who lead Division I.

LIVERPOOL BEATS EVERTON 1-0 TO RESTORE 12-POINT LEAD IN PREMIER LEAGUE

DIOGO Jota scored the goal that settled the Merseyside derby yesterday and kept Liverpool’s Premier League title challenge on track.

The Portugal international’s second-half strike sealed a 1-0 win at Anfield and restored Liverpool’s 12-point lead over Arsenal at the top of the standings. With just eight games remaining this season, this was one of the biggest hurdles standing in the way of a record-equalling 20th English title for Arne Slot’s team. And it was Jota who came up with the decisive moment in the 57th minute when he twisted his way through the box and lashed

a shot past Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford. Fourth-placed Manchester City was without the injured Erling Haaland but still beat Leicester 2-0 to stay one point ahead of Newcastle in the race for Champions League qualification. Newcastle, in fifth, beat Brentford 2-1. Marcus Rashford scored again for Aston Villa in a 3-0 win at Brighton.

Bottom-club Southampton was denied only its third league win of the season when Matheus Franca scored in the second minute of stoppage time to salvage a 1-1 draw for Crystal Palace. Ipswich did pick up a rare win — beating Bournemouth 2-1.

Test of nerve Liverpool’s outstanding campaign has wobbled in recent weeks. Champions League elimination at the

hands of Paris Saint-Germain was quickly followed by defeat to Newcastle in the English League Cup final.

Meanwhile, Arsenal’s win over Fulham on Tuesday sparked the possibility that the Londoners could yet mount something of a title challenge.

Dropped points against a fast-improving Everton would only have fueled belief that the tension is beginning to hit Liverpool’s players at just the wrong time.

The home team survived two scares in the first half when Beto had a goal ruled out for offside and later struck the post after racing clear.

Liverpool took advantage through Jota’s first goal in his last 11 appearances. Victory means Liverpool need just 13 more points to be confirmed champion.

Warm welcome for Devynne Charlton at her alma mater

THE women’s 60 metres hurdles world indoor record holder Devynne Charlton has inked a $30,000 endorsement contract with BTC to serve as the company’s brand ambassador.

The monumental announcement was made at Charlton’s alma materSt Augustine’s College - in front of pupils, relatives and friends on Tuesday morning.

In addition to the oneyear partnership with BTC, anytime the Olympian

returns home she will have the luxury of seeing her face plastered next to a congratulatory message on a BTC billboard near SAC on Prince Charles.

Charlton also took the opportunity to give a special shoutout to SAC for always supporting her and her many accomplishments over the years.

Charlton was a part of a five-member contingent that picked up a single gold medal at the 2025 World Indoor Championships earlier this month.

opportunities and support that have shaped my time here. The memories we’ve created will forever hold a special place in my heart. “After thoughtful discussions with my family, mentors and coaches, I’ve made the decision to enter the transfer portal, having

two years of college eligibility remaining. I’m filled with excitement as I look forward to the new adventures and opportunities that lie ahead. Thank you for everything and I am excited to see where the next chapter takes me,” she wrote. The North Alabama guard joined the Lions as a freshman with

head coach Missy Tiber leading the charge. In her freshman year, she put up 9.5 ppg, 3.7 rebounds and three assists in 29 games played. She also started 28 out of those 29 games. The transition into her sophomore year was not as seamless due to the Lions replacing coach Tiber with

new head coach Candi Whitaker. Charlton’s numbers declined and her playing time was cut in half. She played just 18 games and averaged 2.2 ppg, 0.9 rebounds and 0.4 assists. Both athletes are in search of new programmes to further their collegiate basketball careers.

Devynne Charlton focused on World Outdoors in September

time of 7.72 seconds after running 7.94 seconds in round one of the heats and 7.82 seconds in the semis.

Last season the women’s 60m hurdles champion was the lone Bahamian Olympian to advance to the finals at the 2024 Olympic Games. She placed sixth in the women’s 100m hurdles with a time of 12.56 seconds in her second Olympic appearance. If those last three seasons are any indication, Charlton is poised for a breakthrough at the World Outdoors.

The hurdler recently signed a one-year $30,000 deal with BTC to come onboard as the company’s brand ambassador earlier this week at St Augustine’s College.
