‘IT’S NOT OVER UNTIL GOD SAYS IT IS’
Easter message by the Rt Rev Laish Boyd, Bishop of the Anglican Diocese of the Bahamas and the Turks and Caicos Islands
As we celebrate another Easter what comes to mind? Rays of dazzling light, an empty tomb, lilies, Easter eggs, Easter bunnies, Easter baskets, brightly-coloured fabric and the CARIFTA Games.
Each of these things has its place but Easter is really about:
Hope where there is no hope
Overcoming impossible odds, and Climbing over insurmountable obstacles.
Jesus rising from the dead is the greatest image in the Christian Religion. It causes the cross to have meaning. It is a symbol of God’s newness and renewal, God’s change, and God’s solution to some of the most difficult situations of life.
The resurrection is a symbol of the fact that nothing is “over” until God says that it is “over”. This is the fire that has burned in the hearts of believers in every age, helping them to face all
that life brings, and to persevere and to overcome.
Jesus called the disciples and others to follow Him because, in following Him, they would find a path where the “cannots” of the world are overcome by the “cans” of God’s plan, and where the things otherwise impossible are overcome by God working them out in God’s way and time.
This is why the words of that great hymn for St Andrew’s Day, written by Cecil Frances Alexander (1818 - 1895) are true every day of the year:
“Jesus calls us o’er the tumult Of all our life’s wild restless sea; Day by day his sweet voice soundeth Saying Christian follow me”.
The power of the resurrection calls us away from the tumult of life to live our best overcoming life in God, to live the life that we can only live in God. A Happy Easter to you and yours from the Anglican Diocese of the Bahamas and the Turks and Caicos Islands.
REBOUNDING POPE FRANCIS MARKS PALM SUNDAY IN VATICAN SQUARE
By FRANCES D'EMILIO Associated Press
BUNDLED in a long, white coat and battling a hoarse voice, Pope Francis presided over Mass in St Peter's Square before tens of thousands of faithful on Palm Sunday, a day after he left a Rome hospital where he was treated for bronchitis.
The sun broke through the clouds during the Mass, one of the longest services on the Church's calendar, as Francis, red vestments placed over his coat, sat in a chair under a canopy erected in the square. He took his place there after standing and clutching a braided palm branch in a popemobile that drove at the tail end of a long, solemn procession of
cardinals, other prelates and rank-and-file Catholics. Participants carried palm fronds or olive tree branches.
Francis, 86, received antibiotics administered intravenously during his three-day stay. He last previous appearance in St Peter's Square saw him conduct his his regular Wednesday public audience. He was taken to
RT REV LAISH BOYD
Rome's Gemelli Polyclinic that same day after feeling ill.
His voice sounded strong as he opened the Mass, but quickly turned strained. Despite the hoarseness, Francis read a 15-minutelong homily, occasionally adding off-the-cuff remarks for emphasis or gesturing with a hand.
The homily focused on moments when people
feel “extreme pain, love that fails, or is rejected or betrayed.'' Francis cited “children who are rejected or aborted,” as well as broken marriages, "forms of social exclusion, injustice and oppression, (and) the solitude of sickness."
Deviating from his prepared speech, Francis spoke about a homeless German man who recently died, “alone, abandoned,” under the colonnade circling St Peter's Square,
where homeless persons often sleep.
"I, too, need Jesus to caress me and be near to me,'' Francis said.
Concern over abandonment threaded through his homily. “Entire peoples are exploited and abandoned; the poor live on our streets and we look the other way; migrants are no longer faces but numbers; prisoners are disowned, people written off as problems,” Francis said.

76th Girls Guides Company of St Ambrose Anglican Parish welcome new members and future leaders
LAST Sunday, the Girls Guides attached to the Parish of St Ambrose attended a special service. The Guides, Rangers, Sunflowers and Brownies all donned their respective uniforms for the eucharistic celebration on the fifth Sunday of Lent.
The youngsters read the first lesson, Proper Psalm, second lesson and the intercessions for the mass.
This year, the organisation celebrates 50 years of existence in the Bahamas.
The sermon for the morning eucharist came from Elbernique Ferguson, assistant leader of the Rangers Guides. In her message for the youngsters and the congregation, she reflected on
how six years ago she was not a member of any civic organisation and not even interested in the Girls Guide organisation. It
wasn’t until one of her friends invited her to a Guide leader meeting that she found herself enthused with the concept.
She spoke about how she was somewhat loud and lacked discipline as a teen. Fast forward to 2023 and she said she is more self-controlled, reserved, and has been able to harness the leadership qualities that were hidden deep inside her. She said she can now share what God laid on her heart in front of the congregation.
In addition to Elbernique, Cierra Rahming, a junior leader in the Rangers and Guides, delivered a short sermon. Cierra said it is unbelievable how far she has progressed since joining the organisation.
During the weekly meetings and camps, she said she has been able to share and seek guidance,
as well as direction from Guide leaders who she looks up to.
Archdeacon James Palacious placed the proverbial icing on the cake as he melded the two sermons together. He admonished the young ladies to continue on their current path and build bridges with the younger girls so that when they leave to attend school abroad, the organisation will not be left bereft of qualifed young leadership. The country, he added, needs leaders, not followers.
The 76th Girls Guide Organisation boasts of many notable leaders, including President Leja Burrows, Vice President Keva Nairn, Phillipa Robinson and Norma Dean.

WHY PARTS OF GOOD FRIDAY WORSHIP HAVE BEEN CONTROVERSIAL
By JOANNE M PIERCE Professor Emerita of Religious Studies, College of the Holy Cross
(THE CONVERSATION)
Churches around the world will be holding services for their three most important days during this Holy Week: Holy Thursday, sometimes called Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter Sunday.
Easter commemorates Christ’s resurrection from the dead, the fundamental belief of Christianity. It is the earliest and most central of all Christian holidays, more ancient than Christmas.
As a scholar in medieval Christian liturgy, I know that historically the most controversial of these three holy days has been the worship service for Good Friday, which focuses on the crucifixion of Jesus Christ.
Two parts of the contemporary Good Friday worship service could be misunderstood as implicitly anti-Semitic or racist. Both are derived from the medieval Good Friday liturgy that Catholics and some other Christian churches continue to use in a modified form today.
These are the solemn orations and the veneration of the cross.
Prayer and anti-Semitism
The solemn orations are formal prayers offered by the assembled local community for the wider church, for example, for the pope. These orations also include other prayers for members of different religions, and for other needs of the world.
One of these prayers is offered “for the Jewish people.”
For centuries, this prayer was worded in a way to imply an anti-Semitic meaning, referring to the Jews as “perfidis,” meaning “treacherous” or “unfaithful.”
However, the Catholic Church made important changes in the 20th century. In 1959, Pope John XXIII dropped the word “perfidis” entirely from the Latin prayer in the all-Latin Roman missal. This missal, an official liturgical book containing the readings and prayers for the celebration of Mass and Holy Week, is used by Catholics all
over the world. However, when the next edition of the Latin Roman missal was published in 1962, the text of the prayer still mentioned the “conversion” of the Jews and referred to their “blindness.”
The Second Vatican Council, or Vatican II, a major meeting of all Catholic bishops worldwide held between 1962 and 1965, mandated the reform of Catholic life and practice in a number of ways. Open discussion with members of other Christian denominations, as well as other non-Christian religions, was encouraged, and a Vatican commission on Catholic interaction with Jews was established in the early 1970s.
Vatican II also called for a renewal of Catholic worship. The revised liturgy was to be celebrated not just in Latin, but also in local vernacular languages, including English. The first English Roman missal was published in 1974. Today, these post-Vatican religious rituals are known as the “ordinary form” of the Roman rite.
The completely reworded prayer text reflected the renewed understanding of the relationship between Catholics and Jews mandated by Vatican II and supported by decades of interreligious dialogue. For example, in 2015 the Vatican commission released a document clarifying the relationship between Catholicism and Judaism as one of “rich complementarity,” putting an end to organized efforts to convert
Jews and strongly condemning anti-Semitism.
However, another important development took place in 2007. More than 40 years after Vatican II, Pope Benedict XVI allowed a wider use of the preVatican II missal of 1962, known as the “extraordinary form.”
At first, this pre-Vatican II missal retained the potentially offensive wording of the prayer for the Jews.
The prayer was quickly reworded, but it does still ask that their hearts be “illuminated” to “recognise Jesus Christ.”
Although the extraordinary form is used only by small groups of traditionalist Catholics, the text of this prayer continues to trouble many.
In 2020, on the 75th anniversary of the liberation of the concentration camp at Auschwitz, Pope Francis repeated the vehement Catholic rejection of anti-Semitism. While the pope has not revoked the use of the extraordinary form, in 2020 he ordered a review of its use by surveying the Catholic bishops of the world.
The cross and what it symbolises
There has been similar sensitivity about another part of the Catholic Good Friday tradition: the ritual veneration of the cross.
The earliest evidence of a Good Friday procession by lay people to venerate the cross on Good Friday comes from
threaten the safety of Christians and the security of Christian societies.
From the late 11th through 13th centuries, soldiers would “take the cross” and join crusades against these real and perceived threats, whether these opponents were Western Christian heretics, Jewish communities, Muslim armies, or the Greek orthodox Byzantine Empire. Other religious wars in the 14th through 16th centuries continued in this “crusading” spirit.
fourth-century Jerusalem. Catholics would proceed one by one to venerate what was believed to be a piece of the actual wooden cross used to crucify Jesus, and honor it with a reverent touch or kiss.
So sacred was this cross fragment that it was heavily guarded by the clergy during the procession in case someone might try to bite off a sliver to keep for themselves, as was rumored to have happened during a past Good Friday service.
During the medieval period, this veneration rite, elaborated by additional prayers and chant, spread widely across Western Europe. Blessed by priests or bishops, ordinary wooden crosses or crucifixes depicting Christ nailed to the cross took the place of fragments of the “true cross” itself. Catholics venerated the cross on both Good Friday and other feast days.
In this part of the Good Friday liturgy, controversy centers around the physical symbol of the cross and the layers of meaning it has communicated in the past and today. Ultimately, to Catholics and other Christians, it represents Christ’s unselfish sacrificing of his life to save others, an example to be followed by Christians in different ways during their lives.
Historically, however, the cross has also been held up in Western Christianity as a rallying point for violence against groups that were deemed by the church and secular authorities to
From the 19th century on, Americans and other English speakers use the term “crusade” for any effort to promote a specific idea or movement, often one based on a moral ideal. Examples in the United States include the 19th-century antislavery abolitionist movement and the civil rights movement of the 20th century.
But today certain “ideals” have been rejected by the wider culture.
Contemporary alt-right groups use what has been called the “Deus vult” cross. The words “Deus vult” mean “God wills (it),” a rallying cry for medieval Christian armies seeking to take control of the Holy Land from Muslims. These groups today view themselves as modern crusaders fighting against Islam.
Some white supremacy groups use versions of the cross as symbols of protest or provocation. The Celtic cross, a compact cross within a circle, is a common example. And a fullsized wooden cross was carried by at least one protester during the Capitol insurrection in January 2021.
Prayers and symbols have the power to bind people together in a common purpose and identity. But without understanding their context, it is all too easy to manipulate them in support of dated or limited political and social agendas.

Seventeen new church leaders ordained
By FELICITY DARVILLE
LIFE Changers Ministries International (LCMI) reached a major milestone in when 17 individuals took up the spiritual responsibility to become members of the clergy.
On Sunday, March 26, 2023, Life Changers ordained 15 Ministers, one evangelist and one pastor to its leadership fold. In the 19 years of its existence, this is the first time LCMI has ordained ministers in the church.
The service was moderated by Executive Pastor K Cleopatra Williams, with the assistance of other serving pastors at LCMI. The ordination and installation service were well-attended as scores of family, friends and well wishers came to join in praise and prayer to commemorate this momentous occasion.
The message, which was brought forth by Bishop Valentino Williams, the chief celebrant, was on the topic "The Work of Ministry”, which outlined seven invaluable lessons from Jesus about the work of ministry.
He reminded the ordinands that ministry is not about self-advancement,
promotion or glorification. It is not about competition of who can sing, pray or preach the best. Instead, ministry is about advancing the agenda of the kingdom of God.
"We wholeheartedly believe that these 17 persons who are called to the work of the kingdom of God represent the very essence of our theme for 2023, 'Positioning, Possibilities and Progress'," said Bishop Williams.
"This is the kind of positioning that brings us into phenomenal progress in every area of our lives."
During this past Sunday's ordination service, the Fire and Glory Fine Arts Ministry blessed the congregation with a liturgical number, and singer Leandria Smith serenaded the church-goers with a gospel medley.

Baptist Union of Churches ‘rebuild broken walls’ during 87th session of Exuma District Convention
By Jonathan Rolle
THE 87th annual session of the Exuma District Convention of the Bahamas Baptist Union of Churches came to an exciting close in Exuma last week.
The sessions were held at the Mt Herman Union Baptist Church, Mt Thompson, and featured speakers and lecturers from throughout the length and breadth of the islands, including New Providence.
Under the theme “Rebuilding the Broken Walls”, taken from Nehemiah 2: 17-18, numerous delegates from New Providence and Long Island attended the five-day sessions from March 22-26.
A time to fellowship and rekindle friendships, the sessions were aimed at enhancing the spirituality within the Body of
Christ, and to encourage individuals to the way of the cross.
Superintendent of the Bahamas Baptist Union, Rev Garth Rolle brought the closing sermon on Sunday. He spoke on the theme and encouraged the congregation to unite and strengthen the things which remain, and for the members to work towards one common goal.
The convention heard from the island’s chief councillor, Kendal McPhee, and Administrator Donald Rolle, who brought congratulatory remarks. Presenters and speakers during the sessions included Rev Dr William Thompson, senior pastor of Faith United Missionary Baptist Church; Sister Keniqua Burrows and Minister Elaine Hinzey of Salem Union Baptist Church.
Aspects of the sessions included a pre-musical
and live recording by the various choirs, and a gospel explosion by the District Youth Department in honor of the late Harriette Thompson, who made valuable contributions during her tenure.
Officers of the various departments of the convention include Rev Leslie Curtis, who serves as president of the Parent Body; Sister Claudette Rolle, who leads the Women’s Department, and Reverend Bradley Clarke, who serves as president of the Youth Department.
The Exuma District Convention comprises a total of 16 churches on the island. Established in 1935 by the late Rev Enoch Backford Sr, the convention has had a rich history of great leaders over the years. Brother Alpheaus Smith served as the first president, and Reverend Leslie Curtis is the current leader.

SCENES FROM LAST YEAR’S EASTER FEST
Bahamas Harvest Church closes its eastern campus
By JEFFARAH GIBSON | Tribune Features Writer jgibson@tribunemedia.net
After 28 years of occupying a space on Prince Charles Drive, Bahamas Harvest Church closed its eastern campus in a special service last Sunday.
The final service saw congregants who also attend Bahamas Harvest west gather for one last praise and worship session.
Dubbed “East Campus Day”, the fully loaded service featured an address by lead Pastor Mario Moxey who delivered the timely and fitting message of “Seasons Change.”
Church members, guests and friends from both the East and West Campuses came together across three morning services to say farewell to the eastern location.
In his address to the church, Pastor Moxey shared that the eventual goal was to merge both campuses. However, the church had to move three years earlier than it was expecting to.
This came as result of “direct obedience to God”, he said.
“There is perhaps no one who has a more sentimental attachment to the East Campus than I do. I learned the true definition of blood, sweat and tears through the many sacrifices that my family and I made in seeing this place come out of the ground and stand as a testament to God’s grace and love. We have witnessed hundreds of people give their lives to Jesus Christ at these altars, married countless couples whose babies we have dedicated here at this altar, and we have eulogised many of our loved ones here at our East Campus,” he said in an emotional and moving address.
In 1992, Pastor Moxey felt the call to attend the World Harvest
Bible College in Columbus, Ohio. During his time at college, he acknowledged the call of God upon his life to become a pastor. On Sunday, July 16, 1995, Pastor Rod Parsley, a spiritual father, publicly released and commissioned Pastors Mario and Erika Moxey to fulfil the vision God gave them for the Bahamas.
The Bahamas Harvest Church was opened on November 19, 1995 in the Seagrapes Shopping Centre on Prince Charles Drive with a handful of worshippers.
On April 4, 2000, a groundbreaking ceremony was held for the construction of the new church facility on Blueberry Hill Road, off Prince Charles. In February 2002, the church completed its 9,600 sq ft family worship facility and in 2007, the same facility was expanded to 15,000 sq ft.
Since the construction of its East Campus on Prince Charles Drive, the ministry has seen countless lives changed as it evolved in sharing the message of Jesus Christ for 21 years.
“The East Campus represents the foundation and the formation of the Bahamas Harvest Church we see today. We learned the strategies and systems to fulfil our mission of reaping the harvest, and I learned how to be a pastor while at the East Campus," Pastor Moxey said.
In his message to the congregation, he said that he has been in ministry long enough to understand the importance of knowing the season that you're in.
“A season is a divine strategic window of opportunity. Every time God closes a season, He has another season waiting for you. Too many people remain in a season beyond its intended time. What should have taken the Israelites 11 days to get to the Promised Land took 40 years because they missed their window of opportunity. I'm excited to see how God moves as we transition from our bedrock season to the building season,” he said.
Pastor Moxey expressed sincere gratitude to the entire
eastern community for supporting the ministry over the past 28 years and invited them to continue to fellowship with the church at its West Campus on John F Kennedy Drive. He also thanked the elders, staff, volunteers and members of the East Campus for their faithful service over the years.
Bahamas Harvest Church is poised to begin construction of a 100,000 plus sq ft facility on Bethel Avenue to accommodate its growing congregation of young families with children. In the meantime, the Bahamas Harvest Church West Campus will continue to host worship experiences on Sundays at 8am, 10am and 12noon.
Its eastern edifice will be offered to another church in need of a facility to serve the growing and flourishing population of the eastern New Providence community.
