TWO-HUNDRED-YEAR-OLD ST ANDREWS KIRK PARTNERS WITH COVENANT LIFE PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH IN HISTORIC MERGER

ON Easter morning, a day that celebrates a Christian ritual of rebirth around the world, an historic rebirth took place in Nassau.

Pastors from two Presbyterian churches took the pulpit with shared voices, sermons and congregations in a single space, unveiling a partnership between the well-established national institution, 213-year-old St Andrew’s Kirk and the high-energy six-year-old Covenant Life Presbyterian Church.

The historic merger, nearly a year in the making, arose out of discussions on a collaboration to hold a theology conference.

Through e-mails, planning meetings, and even a lunch, the pastors from both churches realised not only did they share basic theological dictates, each has strengths and weaknesses that could complement one another on an ongoing basis long after the conference ended. Both churches are Presbyterian-governed and Reformed in their theologies, explained St Andrew’s Kirk Pastor Bryn MacPhail, and each, he added, has a lot to gain from the other’s strengths.

“Each congregation did a ‘gaps’ analysis, and we discovered that the Kirk’s weaker areas were areas of strength for Covenant Life Presbyterian Church and vice versa,” said Mr MacPhail. “The Kirk offers the stability that comes from a 213-year-old ministry with excellent facilities, experienced leaders and a strong connection to a healthy denomination. Covenant Life (CLPC) is led by an experienced Bahamian pastor, Julian Russell, who has developed and nurtured young, energetic leaders passionate about sharing the gospel.”

The timing, it turns out, was serendipitous. Covenant Life’s lease was running out and it was going to be forced to look for new premises—not an easy task for a young church with 50-60 members.

With after-school and other community programmes serving the neighbouring Bain and Grants’ Town communities, St Andrew’s large congregation of 200-300 will benefit from the support of at least 30 members of Covenant Life who made their membership in the merged church official on Easter Sunday with up to two dozen other Covenant Life congregants likely to join.

Pastors will share duties with MacPhail remaining Senior Pastor but at 85 percent of his current responsibilities. Covenant Life Pastor Julian will also be calling on lay pastors, including Rekeno Carroll, a popular seminary student. And all agree the music is likely to play a greater role as both applaud contemporary along with classic.

“We have already been greatly blessed by the members and leaders of Covenant Life Presbyterian Church since they began worshipping with us in January,” said Mr MacPhail. “As they take this step to become members of St Andrew’s Kirk on Easter Sunday, we see the kind Providence of God at work. Our mantra over the last few months has been, ‘We are better together’.

“This is proving to be true as we augment all of our ministries with gifted persons from CLPC. CLPC’s founding pastor Dr Julian Russell has done an excellent job equipping others to be leaders. We are adding to our session (elders board) two of their ‘ruling elders’, Anthony Stubbs and Rekeno Carroll, and installing them on Easter Sunday. This is a historic moment in the 213-year history of St Andrew’s Presbyterian Kirk, and with Covenant Life PC coming on board our future looks brighter than ever."

Services will continue to be held on Sundays at 10.30am at the Kirk, as congregants call it, on Princess Street across from the Central Bank in the heart of historic Nassau.

awarded to William Mark Cartwright.

“Both recipients have made an indelible mark in the gospel community,” said Travis Edgecombe, BGMA CEO and executive producer.

“For 30 years, Edison Sumner and VOP have been one of the longest performing gospel ensembles in the Bahamas and are known for hosting their Good Friday concerts at no cost,” he said.

“William Mark Cartwright, the visionary behind the family festival ‘FamFest’ has given selflessly to numerous gospel artists the opportunity to share their music through his platform. They must be celebrated for their faithfulness to God and the Gospel Industry.”

The nominees for the 2023 awards show were recently announced on the BGMA Facebook page.

The virtual live event was hosted by Gandhi Pinder and DJ Godson, and featured performances by Stermon, Shannette Hepburn, IAmStacs and Big Bruh. The event also featured a music video for BGMA winner Alia Coley and Oslien Jadorte’s new single “Mash Down”.

The power of gospel music

MUSIC can offer many people many different things; it can help with meditation, life your mood. Overall, it can have a very therapeutic effect.

When it comes to gospel music, in particular, Tribune Religion readers agree that it helps with building up your spirituality and in your walk with God.

“There are a lot of ways persons may find a connection with God, one of the ways that I do is through inspirational and gospel music,” said Kayla Deal.

“God speaks to me so much through gospel music to the point where I get so emotional that I actually shed tears. It is a beautiful feeling. I have to prepare myself when listening to gospel music because I am a person that doesn’t like to get too deep into my feelings. But I am learning to embrace it; they are tears of joy. The fact that God loves me so much gives me goosebumps.”

Kayla even has a special playlist.

“Just to name a few, some of my favorite gospel songs are ‘Smile’ by Kirk Franklin, ‘Spirit Lead Me’ by Hillsong, ‘Nobody Greater’ by VaShawn Mitchell, and one of my favourites to praise and worship to, ‘I Believe’ by Jonathan Nelson,” she said.

Patricia Ferguson said the song “Praise Him In Advance” by Marvin Sapp is her favourite gospel tune.

“I am always singing it. It’s everything about gospel music that just makes me feel good. Those words in the song that go: ‘I’ve had my share of ups and downs, times when there was no

one around, God came and spoke these words to me, praise will confuse the enemy.’ It is everything I want and need to hear in an inspirational song,” said Patricia.

Vanessa Moss said listening to gospel music makes her feel like everything is going to be OK.

“Playing gospel music and having a praise and worship session, whether in my house, sitting in traffic, or listening on my AirPods while I’m at work, the music always makes me feel so much better. This is important, especially when I feel like I am going through too much to even find the words to pray. For me it is always the same

Mr Edgecombe said public voting for the Vaughn Miller Radio Personality of the Year and Radio Station of the Year categories began April 17 on the Bahamas Gospel Music Awards Facebook page. Voting will end on May 19.

Winners will be named during the awards show slated for June 11 at the Myles Munroe Diplomat Centre at 6pm under the theme “One God, One Bahamas”.

Mr Edgecombe said the event will highlight the past, present and the future of gospel music in the Bahamas. He said there will be a few reunion performances that will be a major surprise.

Tickets for the awards show will be available from May 1 at $25 at Tyreflex Star Motors, Wulff Road. For more information, contact 813- 8397, 434-8397 or bahamasgospelmusicawards@gmail.com.

couple songs I listen to all the time that change my whole mood,” she said.

Tatyanna Rolle said one of her all-time favourites is Whitney Houston’s rendition of “Jesus Loves Me.”

“That song will always put me in my feelings. Sometimes you get to a point where speaking about your trials and troubles doesn’t seem to help, but at the same time you don’t want to soak in them either. Gospel, for me, is the speaking without me having to verbalise it literally,” she said.

“I get emotional listening to gospel songs because they always speak to my heart and my situations, like all the time. You can listen to a gospel song that reminds you of how much you are covered by the blood of Jesus, how much He loves you and how much you are worth it to Him. This always helps me, and hopefully it can help others too.”
