Gospel artist releases new spoken word project to inspire local youth

Gospel artist and radio personality Dr Ricardo Clarke through his mentorship programme has launched his first in a series of spoken word projects.

Called “ Victory: Vol 1”, Dr Clarke told Tribune Religion that this project was inspired by his own training in personal development, as well as from a desire to provide bits of wisdom on various topics to initiate positive life changes in others.

Through his Occupy initiative, he has over the years sought to help shape character, teach discipline, foster business acumen and promote health within the country’s youth. Core areas of the programme include education, vocation/trade, entrepreneurship, faith, philanthropy, health, financial literacy, and etiquette.

“I distinctly remember after being a featured speaker at the Caribbean Regional Compliance Conference, having the urge to create more published

content like this. In this largely professional and technical setting, I was bolstering the delegates’ soft and interpersonal skills. I was convinced that whether professional or personal, many want to navigate to a place of victory,” he said.

As an interpersonal and soft skills coach, Dr Clarke said he wanted to add a practical approach. So, this project, he said, can be seen as a resource to assist in building emotional intelligence and leadership qualities.

“Given the busy nature of life, I thought it necessary to present this in an audio format, which provides anyone with an easy way to digest the information while driving, walking or working out. If you are a youth worker, guidance counsellor, a parent, or

BAPTISTS IN EXUMA MEET FOR 87TH ANNUAL SESSION

MEMBERS of the Exuma District Convention of the Bahamas Baptist Union of Churches recently convened for their 87th annual session at Mount Hermon Union Baptist Church.

The event was held under the theme “Rebuilding the Broken Walls”, taken from Nehemiah 2:17-18.

The “powerful session” began with the church’s senior members setting the tone with praise and worship. A live recording of the session will be aired at a later time.

While the event sought to minister to all in attendance, it also honoured the late Rev Dr Charles Wellington Saunders, a descendant of Moss Town who was the longest serving superintendent of the Bahamas Baptist Union and pastor of Salem Union Baptist.

According to Vanessa Smith, public relations officer, District President Rev Leslie Curtis inititated the quest to raise funds for a scholarship which will be given in Dr Saunder's honour to a deserving student pursuing a degree in theology.

“Rev Curtis reminded the convention that it was Dr Saunders who enabled him to attend university where he obtained his Master's degree in Theology,” she said.

The day sessions this year focused on the use of corporal punishment in the home and schools. District Education Officer Don Bar was a presenter along with Assistant Superintendent Knowles of the Royal Bahamas Police Force.

The Women's Department, led by Sister Claudette Rolle and her team, held sessions focusing on rebuilding the woman in the home, church and workplace.

“President Rev Bradley Clarke of the Youth Department and his team planned a time of motivation for the young people, as well as a night of Praise. Many young people used their gifts and talents through dance, singing and playing of musical instruments,” said Ms Smith.

A highlight of the event was the keynote address by Supt Rev Garth Rolle, whose message centered on leadership.

He spoke about how a leader must from hear from God and be willing to assess the work and inspire others to join in the good work.

“He said that many walls in our country are broken and are in desperate need of repairs,” Ms Smith told Tribune Religion.

Supt Rolle also charged the convention to “repair broken family walls, broken community walls, as well as broken young men.”

In attendance were the island's administrator, Donald Rolle, and his family; Chief Councillor Kendal McPhee; officer-in-charge of the Exuma Police Chief Supt James Moss; District Education Officer Don Barr; former president of the National Baptist Rev Dr William Thompson; president of Exuma's Christian Council Rev Dr John Rolle; Pastor of Salem Rev Heuter Rolle; executive chairman Rev Raymond Rolle, and President of Remnant of Hope Rev Franklin McKenzie.

Happy 96th birthday to Dr Marjorie Eloise Francis

THE book of Proverbs chapter 31 states, “Who can find a virtuous woman?”

The officers and members of First Baptist Church had no difficulty finding such a woman. They held a pre-birthday celebration in honour of Dr Marjorie Eloise Francis at the church on Sunday, April 23.

This mother of the church, who celebrates her 96th birthday tomorrow, is the widow of the late founding pastor, Rev Dr Earle Francis, and the mother of 13 children (three deceased), who have all made valuable contributions to society.

Among them are Junkanoo icon Percival ‘Vola’ Francis; retired civil servant with the Treasury Florence Taylor; dental practioner Emmanuel Francis; retired Road Traffic agent and associate minister Rev Wilkinson Francis; veteran educator Charlotte Humes; advertising specialist Barbara Darville; school principal Joan Knowles; veteran educator Lorraine Francis; Rev Joseph Francis, pastor of the Gainsville Baptist Church in Hopkinsville, Kentucky, and pastor Dr Diana Francis.

Rev Dr Walstone Francis, who served as a pastor in Waukegan, Illinois; soloist Margaret Dames, and Keith Francis, who was a licenced minister, pre-deceased their mother.

During last Sunday’s morning service, Mother Francis was showered with tokens of appreciation

someone seeking to personally enhance their lives, this is a great way to start the conversation about that journey. Ultimately, my goal is to add to the pool of a person’s personal resources to aid in their empowerment,” said Dr Clarke.

The Occupy founder said lately he has had many rewarding experiences.

“The one that stands out is my meeting with Margaret Keung, president of Boys and Girls Club of America, Palm Springs. I was given a tour of the facility by her team and saw the operation’s impact on thousands of young people. It truly inspired me to do and be more. Hopefully this project is a reflection of that,” said Dr Clarke.

“ Victory: Vol 1” is available on several digital platforms worldwide, including Apple, Amazon and on YouTube free of charge.

“There will be regular releases in the spoken word genre in the next 12-month cycle. For more information, email occupymentorshipprogram@ gmail.com,” said Dr Clarke.

and tributes of gratitude. With her children and offspring in attendance, “Sweet Potato" – as she was affectionately known – was able to receive her flowers and give God thanks for a long and fruitful life. Following the service, a cakecutting ceremony, which included a brunch, was held in the church's educational section.

Among her numerous contributions, Mother Francis served as the church's organist for 45 years, and has held numerous positions in the Baptist community. She is described as a loving, giving, organised, systematic, and intelligent mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great grandmother. She was also the recipient of the prestigious Mother of the Year Award for the Bahamas in 1996.
