The importance of spiritual food
By JEFFARAH GIBSON Tribune Features Writer jgibson@tribunemedia.net
THE popular phrase
“you are what you eat” not only applies to the physical, but also to the spiritual. Just like food gives us strength, so does the word of God, as long as believers constantly feed their soul in order to maintain spiritual health.
Reading and listening to the Word, as well as meditating and speaking scriptures are all ways to feed the soul. In fact, Proverbs 4:20-21 outlines exactly how Christians are to feed their souls. It states, “My son, attend to my words; incline thine ear unto my sayings, Let them not depart from thine eyes; keep them in the midst of thine heart."
“Keeping the Word of God in one's heart is important for the spiritual growth of any Christian," said Methodist Shannon Russell.
"I put on the whole armour of God every day. And the only way I can do that is by equipping myself. I set aside time to read my Bible every morning. I find when I do that, I am prepared to take on the world. If I miss a day and did not get the opportunity to read the word, I feel hungry; hungry for the Word," she said.
American televangelist Dr Creflo Dollar teaches that because man is a spirit being, it is important for Christians to feed on the Word, which is also spirit.
"God created man as a tri-part being, meaning he is a spirit, who possesses a soul, and lives in a physical body. Because of this tri-part nature, he expects us to take care of each part properly. For the physical body, that would mean eating right, exercising regularly, and getting
enough rest. For the spirit and soul, it means continually “feeding” on a diet of the word of God. The Bible is the prescribed “diet” that our spirits were created to intake," said Dr Dollar.
Baptist Charlene Mortimer said when one’s focus is directed towards God and His word, you are better able to defeat the devil when he attempts to wage war on your mind.
"The devil will wage a minute-by-minute fight
with you. Many people do not realise that Satan is the unseen enemy and he attacks us in our mind. When God tells us to keep our eyes on the Word, He said so because it is our weapon against Satan. We cannot fight without the word. Christians who do not read their Bible or do not go to church to at least hear something will always be caught offguard and be ill-prepared when the devil picks a fight," she told Tribune Religion.
"The more we focus on God’s Word, the more we will desire it, and the more rapidly we will see spiritual growth and development taking place in our lives. My spirit needs strength to overcome everything in the world.”
Jason Bascom, a bornagain believer said the Bible is not just a book of rules, but rather a reflection of what the lives of Christians should look like.
"I will not go one day without keeping the Word in the front of my eyes. I need it every day because I have now come to understand that if I am going to be successful, I have to know what the Word of God says about my success. I put scriptures on my refrigerator; I keep them on my desk at work, I store them in my phone just so I can keep them in the front of my eyes," he said.

Guidelines for a Catholic Church wedding
By ALESHA CADET Tribune Features Writer acadet@tribunemedia.net
WHEN it comes to a couple’s wedding day, the execution is mostly left totally up to the bride and groom-to-be, or the wedding planner, if they have one.
If a couple, for example, opts to get married by a Justice of the Peace on a beach, they can have the ceremony play out whichever way they want.
However, if a couple decides they would like to tie the knot before God and all mankind in a church, then there are certain important rules and guidelines that need to be followed.
The immutable rules are that both bride and groom were baptised Christian. One or both partners should be baptised as Catholic. They cannot be closely related (Catholics cannot marry first cousins or anyone else in their immediate family). They have to be free of any impediment that would prevent marriage. They must be of the opposite sex and in good standing with the Church. The couple must also give their consent to be married according to the Code of Canon Law 1057 §1.
But beyond these hard and fast rules, there are also certain guidelines one should observe. Our readers weighed in on the subject.
“Those who know me know I am a fashion girl at heart. Wearing my shorts
and tank tops don’t make me less of a Catholic girl, but I grew up in the Catholic faith and I respect the rules that were put in place before my time,” said Sasha Johnson.
She said when it is her time to get married, she would either have to be very mindful of dressing more modestly, covering her arms and back, or she would have to consider having the ceremony at a venue outside of the church.
“My ideal wedding dress would have sheer and lace, but this won't be possible if the ceremony is held in church, and that's just respect to the Cathedral. Even when it comes to my partner, if he’s not Catholic, then there are certain things we would have to learn together if we want to get married at my church,” said Sasha.
In an article by Erin Celletti for the website www.brides.com, she writes about important things to know if you are considering having a Catholic church wedding.
“One of the most beautiful aspects of wedding ceremonies is how sacred traditions vary across cultures and religions. For Catholics, marriage, also known as holy matrimony, is considered a religious sacrament and it often involves specific, timehonored rituals. Before couples can get approved for a Catholic wedding, they may be required to submit certain documents, participate more in church activities, and go through
an intensive marriage preparation process with a priest,” said Erin.
Tribune reader Renee Greene wholeheartedly agrees. Before getting married to her husband, who follows non-denominational beliefs, they had to engage in a number of Catholic practices because they wanted to get married in a church.
“I am Catholic, he’s not. But he attended church with me ever since we started dating. It became his church home, but he still didn’t do the things I did, like confirmation. He doesn’t know deeply about our creed or the Eucharist. So, we had to attend marriage counselling classes where both him and I learned about the Catholic faith and belief,” she said.
“As Catholic as I am though, Lord knows the dress I really wanted to wear as my wedding gown I couldn’t. There are rules that have to be followed when having a ceremony in a Catholic church and things have to be covered.”
Erin Celletti also touched on this in her article.
“Almost all churches require more modest cuts and garments. If you're getting married in a Catholic church, you may have to rethink plunging necklines, sheer panels, deep-back gowns, and high slits. Just reserve these silhouettes and designs as a second dress at the reception.”

Young Bahamian preacher releases book with a ‘message of holiness for today’s generation’
By SHERIAL FRASER The Ambassador Agency
Freeport – Known as the “little boy preacher” who delivered his first sermon at age nine, now at 23, Raphael R Roker has announced the release of his new book, “A Charge To Keep: A Message of Holiness for Today’s Generation.”
Over the years, Roker has established himself as a bold and unapologetic voice in the Christian community, at home in Grand Bahama and the United States where he is currently studying.
In “A Charge To Keep,” he offers a clarion call to believers to take hold of the charge left for us to carry on earth, urging readers to live in holiness, righteousness, and truth while being an example and light in a dark, morally declining world.
“This book is not your typical self-help, three ways to prosperity or five steps to finding purpose book,” Roker explained. “Instead, this is a message of holiness for today’s generation – a call to return to the truth of God’s word and reject the motivational speeches that have taken over our pulpits.”
Roker draws on his experiences as a young man and a young believer, hoping to inspire others within his generation to boldly preach the truth amidst a dark and deceived world. Through a compilation of messages he has preached and written over the years, Roker aims to offer readers a message of hope, stirring their passion for winning
the lost and strengthening their faith in Jesus Christ.
“Not everyone may receive or like the words written on these pages,” Roker said, “but I am willing to pay the price for this glorious Gospel to be preached. I will not be silenced or pressured into changing what I know to be God’s standard for His people.”
Roker is a blogger on rokerglobal.org and a graduate of St George’s High School in Freeport. He served as a leader within the Student Christian Movement club from grades 7-12 and graduated salutatorian with an associate’s degree in Pastoral Leadership from Valor Christian College, Columbus, Ohio.
Roker is graduating from Oral Roberts University on May 6, with a Bachelor of Arts in Church Leadership. His home church in Freeport is Jubilee Cathedral, under the leadership of Bishop Godfrey R Williams. He also served at World Harvest Church in Columbus, Ohio, under the tutelage of Dr.Rod Parsley from 2018-2021 and, while at ORU in Tulsa, served at Friendship Church under the leadership of Rev Jamaal Dyer.
His new book, “A Charge To Keep: A Message of Holiness for Today’s Generation,” is now available on Amazon. For more information, visit his website at www. rokerglobal.org.

St Ambrose Anglican Church marching band showcases its skills
ON Sunday, April 30, also referred to as Good Shepherd Sunday, members of St Ambrose Anglican Church marching band got the opportunity to showcase their musical talents in front of an audience of family, friends and well-wishers.
The band led the first, second lessons and Psalms for the Eucharistic celebrations.
Since his arrival in the parish, Father Chester Burton has designated every fourth Sunday of the month as Youth Sunday.
This Good Shepherd Sunday, it was the St Ambrose’s marching band’s time to shine.
Resident band coordinator Keva Nairn invited Alicia Johnson to deliver the sermon and word of encouragement for the day. Mrs Johnson is the
mother of twin sons who have become enthusiastic trumpeters in the church’s band.
Mrs Johnson took her text from Proverbs 22 vs 6, which states, "Train up a child in the way he/she should go.”
She posited that this training must be a collaborative effort between the family, the church, school, and community.
As her twins are nearing their teen years, she said she began to search for a band for them to join which offered the complete package with a holistic approach.
She was recommended the St Ambrose marching band by Police Officer Melinda Seymour McKenzie, whose son Zenon was a member.
Mrs Johnson said she was glad she followed the recommendation,
as the band provides a structured, positive and supportive environment for kids.
All its members, she said, are seen as an integral part of the ensemble.
She said the executive cadre of officers, which includes Arreo Ferguson, Mr Colebrooke,
Mr Farquahson, Davine Rolle and Keva 'Sparkle' Nairn are hard-working, diligent and complement each other. Practices, she added, are well-organised, and discipline and respect for others is the order of the day.
The band programme consists of several
components. Firstly, there is theory and practice.
Members are able to sit any extensive, quantifiable verifiable musical exam.
Secondly, there are the live performances which are held to showcase the accomplishments and diversity of the marching band members. (The band traditionally hosts a Christmas and a Summer concert.)
Thirdly, Family Island travel plays an integral part in fostering fellowship and camaraderie amongst the group members.
A recent trip Eleuthera holds many cherished memories for the youngsters.
Musical camps are held every Summer to give students an opportunity to perfect their skills over a four-week period.
Mrs Johnson said the proverbial icing on the cake are all the social events the band puts on, including movie day and Christmas meetings to remind students that all the work deserves a fun reward. She said the Band teaches self-control, discipline, strong character traits and time management. It helps boost youngsters’ confidence and assists them with problem-solving and conflict resolution.
Mrs Johnson encouraged the parents present to consider enrolling their children in the marching band programme.
The St Ambrose Anglican marching band has helped many of its members obtain scholarships to tertiary schools aboard.

RABBI Nicky Liss won’t be watching King Charles III’s coronation. He’ll be doing something he considers more important: praying for the monarch on the Jewish sabbath.
On Saturday, he will join rabbis across Britain in reading a prayer in English and Hebrew that gives thanks for the new king in the name of the “one God who created us all.”
Liss, the rabbi of Highgate Synagogue in north London, said British Jews appreciated Charles’ pledge to promote the coexistence of all faiths and his record of supporting a multi-faith society during his long apprenticeship as heir to the throne.
“When he says he wants to be a defender of faiths, that means the world because our history hasn’t always been so simple and we haven’t always lived freely; we haven’t been able to practice our religion,” Liss told The Associated Press. “But knowing that King Charles acts this way and speaks this way is tremendously comforting.”
At a time when religion is fuelling tensions around the world — from Hindu nationalists in India to Jewish settlers in the West Bank and fundamentalist Christians in the United States — Charles is trying to bridge the differences between the faith groups that make up Britain’s increasingly diverse society.
Achieving that goal is critical to the new king’s efforts to show that the monarchy, a 1,000-yearold institution with Christian roots, can still represent the people of
modern, multicultural Britain.
But Charles, the supreme governor of the Church of England, faces a very different country than the one that adoringly celebrated his mother’s coronation in 1953.
Seventy years ago, more than 80 percent of the people of England were Christian, and the mass migration that would change the face of the nation was just beginning. That figure has now dropped below half, with 37 percent saying they have no religion, 6.5 percent calling themselves Muslim and 1.7 percent Hindu, according to the latest census figures. The change is even more pronounced in London, where more than a quarter of the population have a non-Christian faith.
Charles recognised that change long before he became king last September.
As far back as the 1990s, Charles suggested that he would like to be known as “the defender of faith,” a small but hugely symbolic change from the monarch’s traditional title of “defender of the faith,” meaning Christianity. It’s an important distinction for a man who believes in the healing power of yoga and once called Islam “one of the greatest treasuries of accumulated wisdom and spiritual knowledge available to humanity.”
The king’s commitment to diversity will be on display at his coronation, when religious leaders representing the Buddhist, Hindu, Jewish, Muslim and Sikh traditions will for the first time play an active role in the ceremonies.
“I have always thought of Britain as a ‘community
of communities,’’’ Charles told faith leaders in September.
“That has led me to understand that the Sovereign has an additional duty — less formally recognized but to be no less diligently discharged. It is the duty to protect the diversity of our country, including by protecting the space for faith itself and its practice through the religions, cultures, traditions and beliefs to which our hearts and minds direct us as individuals.”
That’s not an easy task in a country where religious and cultural differences sometimes boil over.
Just last summer, Muslim and Hindu youths clashed in the city of Leicester. The main opposition Labour Party has struggled to rid itself of antisemitism, and the government’s counterterrorism strategy has been criticised for focusing on
Muslims. Then there are the sectarian differences that still separate Catholics and Protestants in Northern Ireland.
Such tensions underscore the crucial need for Britain to have a head of state who personally works to promote inclusivity, said Farhan Nizami, director of the Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies.
Charles has been the center’s patron for 30 years, lending his stature to Nizami’s effort to build an academic hub for studying all facets of the Islamic world, including history, science and literature, as well as religion. During those years, the center moved from a nondescript wooden structure to a complex that has its own library, conference facilities and a mosque complete with dome and minaret.
“It is very important that we have a king who has been consistently
Referring to the Guru Granth Sahib, the Sikh holy book, Shukra said that “all the people (are) equal.’’ It “doesn't matter'' if you are king, she added.
Some British newspapers have suggested that Charles’ desire to include other faiths in the coronation faced resistance from the Church of England, and one conservative religious commentator recently warned that a multifaith ceremony could weaken the “kingly roots” of the monarchy.
But George Gross, who studies the link between religion and monarchy, dismissed these concerns.
committed to (inclusivity),” Nizami said. “It is so relevant in the modern age, with all the mobility, with the difference and diversity that exists, that the head of this state should bring people together, both by example and action.”
Those actions are sometimes small. But they resonate with people like Balwinder Shukra, who saw the king a few months ago when he officially opened the Guru Nanak Gurdwara, a Sikh house of worship, in Luton, an ethnically diverse city of almost 300,000 north of London.
Shukra, 65, paused from patting out flatbreads known as chapatis for the communal meal the gurdwara serves to all comers, adjusted her floral shawl, and expressed her admiration for Charles’ decision to sit on the floor with other members of the congregation.
The crowning of monarchs is a tradition that stretches back to the ancient Egyptians and Romans, so there is nothing intrinsically Christian about it, said Gross, a visiting research fellow at King's College London. In addition, all of the central religious elements of the service will be conducted by Church of England clergy.
Representatives of other faiths have already been present at other major public events in Britain, such as the Remembrance Day services.
“These things are not unusual in more contemporary settings," he said “So I think of it the other way: Were there not to be other representatives, it would seem very odd.”
Charles’ commitment to a multi-faith society is also a symbol of the progress that’s been made in ending a rift in the Christian tradition that began in 1534, when Henry VIII broke away from the Catholic Church and declared himself head of the Church of England.

The crucifixion gap: why it took hundreds of years for art to depict Jesus dying on the cross
By ROBYN J WHITAKER Associate Professor, New Testament, Pilgrim Theological College, University of Divinity
(THE CONVERSATION) The cross, or crucifix, is arguably the central image of Christianity.
What’s the difference between the two?
A cross is just that - an empty cross. It stands as a statement that Jesus is no longer on the cross and thus symbolises his resurrection.
A crucifix, on the other hand, includes the body of Jesus, to more vividly remind viewers of his death.
Many contemporary Christians, from bishops to ordinary folk, wear some kind of cross or crucifix around their neck and it would be rare to find a church that did not have at least one prominently displayed in the building.
While a symbol of faith, it is not just the pious who wear crosses. Madonna famously wore crucifix earrings and necklaces constantly throughout the 1980s and ‘90s. She is quoted as doing so because she provocatively “thought Jesus was sexy”.
The recent ubiquity of the cross as a fashion item means it is sold at everything from cheap tween fashion stores to that jeweller renowned for its little turquoise boxes, where a diamond cross necklace can run in excess of $10,000.
The 2018 Met Gala’s theme, Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and Catholic Imagination, further bestowed religious
imagery with fashion icon status by making it central to one of the fashion industry’s key events.
Yet the cross was not always the dominant symbol of Christianity that it is now, and would certainly not have been worn as a fashion accessory by early Christians.
In fact, it took centuries for Christians to begin to depict the cross in their art.
An undignified death
While some want to credit Emperor Constantine for the use of the cross as becoming more widespread after the 4th century, it is not that simple. Part of the answer lies in the nature of crucifixion itself.
While crucifixion included some variety in antiquity, it was typically a form of execution reserved for non-elite, non-citizens in the 1st-century Roman Empire.
Slaves, the poor, criminals and political protesters were crucified in their thousands for “crimes” we might today consider minor offences. The types of cross structures might differ, but as a form of execution, crucifixion was brutal and violent, designed to publicly shame the victim by displaying him or her naked on a scaffold, thereby asserting Rome’s power over the bodies of the masses.
That Jesus suffered such an undignified death was an embarrassment to some early Christians. The apostle Paul describes Jesus’ crucifixion as a “stumbling block” or “scandal” to other Jews. Others would imbue it with sacrificial meaning to make sense of how the one claimed as God’s Son would suffer in this way. But the shame associated with this kind of death remained.
to the visual arts, although they do seem to have been very selective in what they did portray. Artwork typically depicted biblical stories and used bucolic imagery to show others being rescued from death or to tell the stories of biblical heroes like Daniel or Abraham.
In the fourth century, Christians began to depict other death scenes from the Bible, such as the raising of Jairus’ daughter, but still not Jesus’ death.
Harley-McGowan writes:
alertness is contrasted with the clearly dead Judas.
While there is a thirdcentury magical amulet that includes crucifixion imagery (and there may have been other gems and amulets lost to history that associated his resurrection from death in magical terms), depictions of the cross only began to emerge in the fifth century and would remain rare until the sixth.
A now infamous piece of graffito, dating to the early third century in Rome, arguably mocks Jesus’ manner of death. Sketched on a wall in Rome, the Alexamenos graffito portrays a donkey-headed male figure on a cross under which is written “Alexamenos, worship god”. The suggestion is that the parody was directed at Christians precisely because they worshipped a man who had died by crucifixion.
Christian images
Felicity HarleyMcGowan, an expert on crucifixion and early Christian art, argues Christians began to experiment with making their own specifically Christian images around 200 CE, roughly 100-150 years after they began writing about Jesus.
The slowness to depict Jesus on a cross was not about a general sensibility
“It is clear that the earliest representations of deaths in early Christian art were pointed in their focus on actions after the event.”
Such depictions emphasised healing, new life and resurrection from death. This emphasis is one explanation for why Christians were slow to depict Jesus’ actual death.
One of the earliest extant depictions of Jesus can be found in the Maskell Passion Ivories dating to the early fifth century CE, more than 400 years after his death. These ivories formed a casket panel that includes one death scene amid a range of scenes telling the Jesus story.
Like much previous Christian art, the emphasis remained on Jesus’ victory over death rather than any desire to depict the reality or violence of his crucifixion. One way to show this was to portray Jesus on a cross but with his eyes open, alive and undefeated by the cross; in the Maskell Ivory, Jesus’
As churches began to be built, crucifixes appeared on engraved church doors and would remain the more standard image until the Reformation emphasis on the empty cross.
The cross continues to have a complex history, being used as both a symbol of Christian ecclesial power and of white supremacy by groups like the Ku Klux Klan.
There can be beauty, intrigue, magic and terror in these cross traditions.
On one hand, it stands as a symbol of Christian belief in Jesus’ death and resurrection. On the other, it is a reminder of the violence of the state and capital punishment.
Perhaps, 2,000 years later, it is always both – even when diamond-encrusted.

Life Changers Ministries International grows with third campus
By FELICITY DARVILLE
Life Changers Ministries International has reached another milestone in ministry with the launch of its third campus in Bozine Town, Nassau.
The Bozine Town community joins with the Bacardi Road, Nassau, and Rock Sound, Eleuthera, communities to make up a ministry that is consistently growing under the leadership of Bishop Valentino Williams and his wife, Pastor Cleopatra Williams.
Formally known as Deliverance Faith Center under the leadership of Dr Mavis Thompson, the ministry was converted to Life Changers Ministries International Bozine Town during a dedication service on Sunday, April 30, at 7.30pm.
The LCMI team only had a two-week window for renovations and upgrades. It was all praises when the mighty feat was achieved.
Bishop Williams chose the sermon topic “There Remaineth much land to be possessed”, taken from Joshua 13:1 KJV: “Now Joshua was old and stricken in years; and the Lord said unto him, Thou art old and stricken in years, and there remaineth yet very much land to be possessed.”
During his message, Bishop Williams revealed several initiatives that he wished to undertake in the Bozine Town community including:
• A breakfast programme for the kids of the community (“No child will go to school on an empty stomach.”)
• A youth empowerment facility
• A Sunday school programme
• A mini mobile clinic
• Grocery assistance programme
• Community beautification programme
• Home repairs and upgrade assistance programmes
• Back-to-school initiatives
Member of Parliament Mario K Bowleg spoke at the launch. He pledged his full support and said he is looking forward to a partnership with LCMI on the special initiatives to be introduced.
As a community introduction, on the Saturday before the launch, Life Changers blessed 100 families in the immediate area with grocery items, then invited them to worship at LCMI on Sundays at 7.30am.
